Don’t Make Yourself a Prisoner
so much what they think that we let if affect how we practice our
religion, how we dress, how we speak, even what names we call
ourselves.
Prisoners have their names taken away and are given numbers. We do it
voluntarily when we change Muhammad to Mo, Wael to Will (I've been
advised by some to do this but I have always refused), and Khadija to
Kim.
Prisoners are told how to dress. We do it to ourselves by giving up
our hijabs and kufis in order to fitin. We enslave ourselves to the
cultural dictates of others. We humiliate ourselves by suppressing
everything that says, "I am Muslim."
Prisoners are sometimes refused the right to pray or to have a Quran.
We do it to ourselves by missing our prayers because we are afraid of
being seen in public; or putting away our Quran and letting it gather
dust.
Prisoners are given no choice in their diets. We do it to ourselves by
eating the non-halal meat that is put in front of us, because we are
ashamed to say, "I only eat halal."
Prisoners learn to remain silent. We do it to ourselves when
othersspeak of faith and religion – sometimes even criticizing Islam
in our presence – and we remain silent because we are embarrassed to
speak up.
"And believe in what I have sentdown confirming that which is
[already] with you, and be not the first to disbelieve in it. And do
not exchange My signs for a small price, and fear [only] Me." – Quran,
Al-Baqarah, 2:41
Allah gave us a great gift, He gave us truth and guidance, and
othersare hungering for it, so don't hideit! We must be ourselves, be
proud (not the pride of arrogancebut of gratitude), let our faith
show, shine our light! A lamp in the darkness cannot be hidden!
Don't make yourself a prisoner! Wear your Islamic clothing without
embarrassment, eat halal without apology, speak your name with pride,
pray on time no matter where you are, read the Quran on the bus or the
subway ifyou wish, and when people ask you about your faith, tell them
with a smile, "I am Muslim." Speakyour truth without fear. Be proud of
Islam. Be free, and hold your head up high, bowing only to Allah/

Advice from a Cloud (Ifa Cloud Could Speak)
and saints alike.
People will see different things in you: relief, or comfort, or a
fearsome sign of a storm. Pay no attention to any of that; but do your
job peacefully.
It's a beautiful thing to provide shade on a hot day (to comfort those
in distress).
You sometimes drift aimlessly, butby the will of Allah, you get in the
right drift and current again.
Oppose evil with thunder and lightning, but with others be soft as cotton.
Not everything is what it seems: the darker the cloud, the more water
it carries within, to cleanse the earth and bring new life.
Never forget, you are mainly madefrom water. Make sure to always
replenish yourself with pure sustenance.
There's a rainbow right behind the storm.
Can you think of any other advice a cloud might give?

Antidepressants Can Raise Blood Pressure During Pregnancy
By ANAHAD O'CONNOR
Published: April 09, 2012
Taking antidepressants during pregnancy raises the risk of high blood
pressure in expectant mothers, a new study shows.
Antidepressants are one ofthe most commonly used medications in
pregnancy, and hypertension can cause problems for both mother and
child. About one in five women suffer from depression during
pregnancy, and up to 14 percent of those women end up using an
antidepressant medicationto treat it.
Though the drugs are commonly prescribed to pregnant women, there has
not been much research on the effect theycan have on a mother's
health.
The new study, published in The British Journal of Clinical
Pharmacology, looked at more than 13,000 pregnant women, 1,200 of whom
had pregnancy-induced hypertension with no history of the condition
before they became pregnant. The researchers found that women taking
antidepressants of any kind had a 53 percent greater risk of high
blood pressure. Those who were taking Paxil, which belongs to the most
commonly prescribed classof antidepressants, known as selective
serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRI's, saw their risk rise even
higher, by 81 percent/

Diabetes blood pressure control warning
blood pressure, risking"damaging" complications, figures suggest.
The analysis of NHS data in England by Diabetes UK showed the number
of people not hitting their target has been stuck at about 50% in
recent years.
High blood pressure increases the risk of conditions such as heart
disease, kidney failure and stroke.
The charity said people needed more support to control their condition.
People with diabetes are normally told to keep their blood pressure
below 130/80, slightly lower thanthe target for the rest of the
population.
For someone without diabetes, blood pressure should be no higher than
140/85 mmHg.
Ideally, we should all have a blood pressure below 120/80.
'Extremely worrying'
Those at risk of exceeding the target can be given medication as well
as support in improving diet and losing weight to get their levels
down.
People with diabetes need to be aware that high blood pressure can
have a hugely damaging effect on their health"
Barbara Young
Diabetes UK
But the figures - based on the National Diabetes Audit, which covers
nine in 10 people diagnosed with the condition in England - showed
that just 50.7% of patients had control of their blood pressure.
The proportion was almostexactly the same as the previous year.
It means that if the figure was replicated across the UK, 1.4 million
out of the 2.9 million people with thecondition would be at risk.
Diabetes UK chief executiveBarbara Young said: "It is extremely worrying.
"People with diabetes needto be aware that high blood pressure can
have a hugely damaging effect on their health.
"But instead we are in danger of high blood pressure becoming the norm
in people with the condition.
"This is one of the reasons they are experiencing record rates of
stroke and kidney failure and are dying years younger than the rest of
the population."
A Department of Health spokesman said it was vitalfor health
professionals to ensure diabetic patients with high blood pressure got
all the health checks recommended by the National Institute for
Clinical Excellence (Nice).
He added: "Diabetic patients who have high blood pressure should also
get advice and treatment to help them manage the condition that fits
with their lifestyle."/

Indian to head world’s first trial withliver stem cells:
trial using liverstem cells that could avoid transplant surgery.
Paediatric liver consultant Professor Anil Dhawan, who will head the
trial at King's College Hospital, has described the use of stem cells
to treat liver disease as an "exciting breakthrough", The Daily Mail
reported.
Doctors have developed a pioneering treatment for liver disease that
could save hundreds of lives a year and avoid the need for transplant
surgery, it said.
Eighteen British children suffering from rare and life threatening
liver conditions are to receive infusions of specially treated liver
cells removed from the organs of dead donors, the paper said.
It said that doctors believe they will make vital stem cells — the
building blocks of life — and repair the damaged organ.
"We have many very sick children and babies who need transplants. If
we can cure them without a transplant that will be a fantastic
development.
"We have tried using ordinary liver cells with limited success, but is
the first time a treatment has been developed that gets the liver to
regrow using stem cells," Mr. Dhawan was quoted, as saying by the
daily.
He added that if all goes well, the children, who are being treated
with the cells, will show an improvement within a couple of months.
"We would expect those children to come off their medicines and
therapy. It will mean the liver cells have done their job and
corrected the defects that made them ill. "Then we will have to see
how long the effect lasts and whether we have to top upthese children
with further infusions. I am optimistic the treatment will work," he
said/

If Not You, Then Who?
have money to get started, or don't have the necessary education or
qualifications, I've got news: you may never have what you need to
feel ready.
Do you think any of the Prophets felt ready when they were chosen?
Muhammad ibn Abdullah (sws), the Messenger of Allah, received the
first revelation, then ran home and hid under a blanket. The Prophet
Musa (as) was confused and frightened when he entered the valleyand
heard a voice commanding him:
"Verily! I am your Lord! Sotake off your shoes, you are in the sacred
valley, Tuwa. And I have chosen you. So listen to that which is
inspired to you. Verily! I am Allah! La ilahailla Ana (none has the
right to be worshipped but I), so worship Me, and perform As-Salat
(Iqamat-as-Salat) for My Remembrance. Verily, theHour is coming and My
Will is to keep it hidden that every person may berewarded for that
which he strives. Therefore, let not the one who believesnot therein
(i.e. in the Day of Resurrection, Reckoning, Paradise and Hell, etc.),
but follows his own lusts, divert you therefrom, lest you perish."
(Surat Taha, 12-16)
When Musa threw the staff down and it became a snake, again he was
frightened. Allah directed him to have courage, and pick it up; when
he touched it, it was restored to its former shape. When he was
commanded to go to Egypt to free the Israelites and reform his people,
he felt unready for the mission. He had a speech impediment and was
afraid that he would not be able to speak convincingly. He sought
permission from Allah to take his brother and fellowProphet Harun
(as), who was an eloquent speaker. Permission was granted.
This illustrates another important point, that everyone needs a
wingman sometimes. We're not always strong enough to do it alone.
Sometimes we need a friend, an ally, a supportivespouse, just one
person who believes in our mission and is willing to help, or simply
puts and arm around our shoulders and says, "I believe in you."If you
have someone like that, he or she is a treasureand a secret weapon.
When it comes to the mostimportant things in life, no one is ever
ready. All you can do is stand tall, build a bonfire of resolve in
your heart, and move. The time to do what you dream is now. Consider
Abu Bakr (ra), who clearly knew howto embrace opportunities. When he
saw the slave Bilal (ra) being tortured, he bought him from Umayyahbin
Khalaf and freed him. He freed many other oppressed Muslims slaves in
the same way. When Abu Bakr's father saw this, he said: "My son, why
are you buying these weak slaves then freeing them? Why don't you at
least keep them so that you can make use out of them?" Abu Bakr
replied: "My father, I am only doing thisto seek the Countenance
ofAllah."
The Messenger of Allah (sws) told us that a man was granted Paradise
for removing a thorny branch from the path. A prostitute was forgiven
all her sins and granted Jannah for giving a drink of water to
athirsty dog. Another man was granted a house in Paradise for donating
a date tree to a poor family.
No good deed is insignificant, for it could bethe grain of sand that
tips the scale and saves you. Noworthy project is too small, nor too
large if you start with a single step, focusingonly on executing that
stepwell. When I face a large project, whether a major web project, a
writing project, or cleaning up a kitchen mess, I tend to get
overwhelmed. So I narrow my focus and I tell myself, just do one
thing. I do the one thing, then pick one more thing, and one more,
then I look around and SubhanAllah, the job is getting done!
If you find yourself disturbed by events aroundyou – whether
internationally, in your community, or within your family – and
thinking, "Someone should do something," well, you are the someone.
You see the need, you have the capabilities that Allah gave you as His
representative on earth, you have the same brain, heart and opposable
thumbs as anyone else. You're it, bro. It's you, sister.
Yes, someone needs to raise funds for our starving brothers and
sisters in Somalia, Syria, Yemen and other places. Someone must speak
out on behalf of political prisoners, educate people about Palestine,
start a Humanitarian Day event in the local community, adoptMuslim
orphans, establish Islamic institutions, represent Muslims in the
media, write Muslim novels, make documentaries…
If not you, then who?

Thus I found that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala does not choose except
someone who is complete in his form without any fault in his way and
no shortcomings therein. So you see him possessing a good countenance,
is of proportionate posture, freefrom defects in his body, complete in
his inner self , generous , charitable , and intelligent . He is not
an imposter nor is he someone who deceives and betrays . He does not
possess hatred or envy and there aren't in him anyof these internal

This is someone who (Allah) has raised from his infancy . So you'll
see him in childhood retreating from the other children as if he were
a shaykh (scholar) amongst them. Heis far removed from all ills and

simplex virus type 1. There is also a Herpes simplex virus 2
thatcauses genital herpes. However, according to the Mayo Clinic,
either virus cancause sores on the face or genitals. Once an
individualhas contracted the virus, heor she has it for life, as there
is no cure for the virus. The virus can lay dormant for months or
longer.
Cold sores can be very painful and unattractive (see pictures of cold
sores). Symptoms usually include small blisters that are red and
filled with fluid. Patients may also experience pain and tingling in
the infected area. Overall, a cold sore should last about 10 days.
While there is no cure for cold sores, you can take some preventative
measures to hopefully prevent them from occurring:
*. Do not share items such as towels, utensils and lipbalm with
someone who has an outbreak.
*. Avoid kissing an individual if he or she hasopen or healing blisters.
*. Use sun block.
*. Avoid stressful situations that may trigger blister outbreaks.

Natural Wonders – Tender Coconut Water
tender coconut water instead.
Nature really went all out when creating the wonderful and
full-of-goodness tender coconut water – the liquid found inyoung or
unripe coconuts. This mildly sweet tasting drink is easily available
in India, especially south India, and makes for a delicious and
refreshing beverage.
While tender coconut water is nourishing when had anywhere in the
world, people living in humid countries specially stand to benefit
from it as it contains nutrients that fight the heat of tropical
regions. And great news for weight watchers – consumed in its natural
form, it has just about 16 – 18 calories per 100 grams.
Coconut water is considered as a "fluid of life". The complex
composition of coconut water comprises ascorbic acid, vitamin B , iron
, protein , fructose, nitrogenand some basic minerals like potassium,
phosphoricacid, calcium and magnesium. It's best to consume it in its
natural form because any kind of process done on coconut water may
destroy its nutrients.
Health benefits of tendercoconut water:
Helps in managing urinary symptoms: Tender coconut water helps to
relieve to control urinary infections . The diuretic quality of
coconut water increases flow of urine and dissolves kidney/urethral
stones in anatural way, thereby keeping the urinary passage clean. In
case of a urinary tract infection, coconut water works as anantiseptic
that helps to remove poisonous minerals.
Fights dehydration: The isotonic qualities present in coconut water
help to regain natural salts and fluids that are otherwise lost by
physical activities and exhaustion. Coconut water is considered better
than commercial sports drink because it is the richest source of
electrolytes and contains more potassium than a banana.
Helps in intestinal disturbances: It even treats intestinal
disturbances in all age groups. Coconut water taken with one teaspoon
of olive oil for 3 days will kill the worms present in the intestine
thereby improving the digestion. Coconut water is sweet and a little
oily in nature It's especially recommended for the old and sick who
are facing problems in digesting solid and semi solid foods.
Good for pregnant women : Tender coconut water is helpful to pregnant
women who usually suffer from acidity, heartburn and indigestion. It is
an outstanding energizer that helps a woman keep up with the changes
that come at different points of the pregnancy. It helps to boost the
levels of amniotic fluid, which playsa vital role in the overall
wellness of the baby.
Increases immunity: Tender coconut water is a good source of Lauric
acid, which is believed to have antimicrobial properties. Ithelps in
the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections caused by
pathogenic bacteria and viruses like Herpes, HIV and flu. In fevers
like malaria , typhoid, measles and chicken pox vomiting is common,
the electrolytes present in coconut water help to settle the stomach
and thereby control nausea/

In India, tremors were felt almost all along the east coast, sending
people running out of their homes and offices.
Tremors of varying intensity were felt in TamilNadu, Andhra Pradesh,

In Indonesia, the first temblor of 8.6-magnitude struck at 2.08 p.m.
It was followed by aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 6.6 to

In The Name Of Allah.. Holy Qur-an O men, fear your Lord! Surely the earthquake of the Hour is a mighty thing. 22:1
Indonesia issues tsunami warning after 8.9 quake:
a preliminary magnitude of 8.9 hit waters off westernmost Aceh
province.
People on Twitter said tremors were felt in Singapore, Thailand,
Malaysia and India. High-rise apartments and offices on Malaysia's
west coast shook for at least a minute.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami watch was
in effect for Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar,
Thailand, the Maldives and other Indian Ocean islands, Malaysia,
Pakistan, Somalia, Oman, Iran, Bangladesh, Kenya, South Africa and
Singapore.
A tsunami watch means there is the potential for a tsunami, not that
one is imminent.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the powerful quake was centered 20
miles (33 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor around 308 miles (495
kilometers) from Aceh's provincial capital.
Said, an official at Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency who
goes by only one name, said a tsunami warning has been issued.
Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that makes the vast island
nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity.
A giant 9.1-magnitude quake off the country on Dec. 26, 2004,
triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people,
nearly three quarter of them in Aceh/

allies if they have preferred disbelief over belief. And whoever does
so among you - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
[Qur'an Surah At-Tawbah 9:23]
Abu Huraira (Radiy Allahu Anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah
(sallAllahu alyhi wasallam) said: "When the human being dies, his
deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial
knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him."

happiness? Why am I alone? Why do I feel stuck? Why do I have these
problems?'…
These questions only have meaning if we direct them to Allah. No one
else can answer them. Consider the words of the Prophet Ya'qub
(alayhis-salam, peace be upon him) when his son Yusuf (as) was
secretly thrown into a well by his brothers. They then reported to
their father that Yusuf had been killed by a wolf.
And he turned away fromthem and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Yusuf," and
his eyes became white from grief, and he fell into silent melancholy.
They said, "By Allah , you will not cease remembering Yusuf until you
become fatally ill or become of those who perish."
He said, " I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah , and
I knowfrom Allah that which you do not know.
- Quran, Surat Yusuf, 12:84-86
"I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah…"
When you feel stuck, when you feel that no one understands your
situation, when you're in pain and you can't even imagine a solution,
only Allah has the answers. You can't see a way forward, but He can.
You don't see your own worth, but He does. You can't figure out the
road to happiness, but He can show you.
I remember a night in Arizona when I was twentysix years old. I lay on
a cot in a small, frigid cell. There was snow outside and I had only a
thin blanket. As I often did, I put on all my clothing in layers –
three pants, three shirts, an armyjacket and a pair of boots –and
still I kept waking up shivering and shaking. Yet, even more than the
physical discomfort, my spirit was tired. I had mademistakes in my
youth and had been locked up for almost five years. I had become hard
mentally and physically, but my heart was full of sorrow. I lay there
that night and I thought, "I have nothing inlife. I have accomplished
nothing. I have no university degree, no wife, no children, and not
even my freedom."
That was a bad time. But I had my faith, and I used to weep to Allah,
asking Him to have mercy on me. I think I gave up on myself for a
while, but I never gave up on Allah. It would not even have occurred
to me to do so. I did cry to Him sometimes saying, "Why, Allah? Why?
Why am I here, suffering like this?" But it wasn't despair, only
confusion. In my heartI knew that He heard me and that an answer would
come.
Shortly after that I receiveda letter from the parole board granting
me early release. I had previously been told very clearly that Iwas
not eligible. It was entirely unexpected, and if you are familiar with
the American penal system, miraculous. But for Allah, nothing is
impossible or even difficult.
Within a few months I was free. I found a job a week after my
release, and I excelled. I began writing, sitting at my desk every
night after work and disciplining myself to work on poetry, stories
and articles. Eventually I went back to school and began anew career,
got married, bought a beautiful house, and one day had a child…
What can I say except Alhamdulillah! SubhanAllah! What can I doexcept
weep in gratitude for these blessings that I did nothing to earn, but
were given to me by my Lord who loves me and cares about me, and wants
good for me. I am so deeply touched and movedby the way Allah has
answered my prayers from the depths of darkness. If I did anything to
merit His blessings, perhaps it was only that I directed my pleas to
Him. I knew that no one else could help me.
This is a very emotional post for me to write. I want every Muslim to
havethis sense of Allah as their friend, as someone who cares for them
deeply. I want to put that awareness into your heart like a gift.
When I was in that cell I used to pray the same dua'over and over,
begging Allah repeatedly. If I had made such pleas to a human being
they would have stopped hearing me long ago. When we're needy with
people it pushes them away, but when we're needy with Allah He comes
closer to us! He never tires of answering our need and forgiving us.
I know of many similar stories of people who havehit rock bottom and
have called upon Allah – or , not even knowing "Allah" by that name,
have called to the Supreme Being, saying, "I know you hear me, tell me
what I need to do, show me the way!" – and then, like a circle of
sunlight piercing a cloud, something or someone comes into their lives
to show them the way forward/

the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and
preferred them over much of what We have created…" – Quran, 17:70.
Allah has honored you. Dignity is your birthright. It's okay if you're
not perfect. No one is. You can stilllove yourself, with all your
special gifts and funny habits, and whatever is lacking, well, you can
work on it. That's what all of us do.
Be patient with your parent and love them, but don't buy into
theirnegativity. Allah loves you and has a plan for you. Believe this
and move forward, and when you have children, shut down the cycleof
negativity and do better than your parent did. It's okay to be better
than your parents. Any good parent wants their children to surpass
them.
Show your own children patience, gentleness and endless love!
