Hadees ~ Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wasallam) as a teacher.

"Jabir b. Abdullah reported that Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi
wasallam) happened to walk through the bazaar coming from the side of
'Aliya and people wereon both sides of him. There he found a dead lamb
with very short ears. He took hold of its ear and said: 'Who amongst
you would like to have this for a dirham?' They said: 'We would not
like to have it even for less than that as it is of no use to us.' He
said: 'Do you wish to have it (free of any cost)?' They said: 'By
Allah, even if it were alive (we would not have liked to possess it),
for there is defect in it, as its ear is very short; on top of that it
is dead now.' Thereupon, Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wasallam)
said: 'By Allah, this world is more insignificant in the eyes of Allah
than (this dead lamb) is in your eyes.'" [Muslim]
This hadith is a wonderful reminder of the insignificance of this
world; yet how much we fret for it. Our worries for the things of this
world should be more proportionate to their importance. We ask Allah
(subhana wa ta'ala) to give us eternity, never ending life. On topof
that we want it in a place better than we can possibly imagine. In it
we expect to have youth for ever, no noise, nothing unpleasant, no
worries. In this everlasting life, in Paradise, we also expect to get
more beautiful and enjoy more luxuries with each passing day, although
after the first day we cannot imagine that anything could be better.
We expect never to be separated from our loved ones, or feel anything
except positive emotions. In return for this, whenAllah (subhana wa
ta'ala) asks us to obey Him for just 70-80 years, maybe a little more
or a little less, we think it too much? He is askingyou for a drop,
while you are asking Him for the ocean!
This hadith also illustrates what an exceptional teacher Rasul
Allah(sal Allahu alaihi wasallam) was. We know what impact visual aids
have. The more theoretical the words, the less of an impact they have,
the more the thoughts can be translated into visuals or experiential,
the more lasting its impact. Now we have educationists teaching us to
use the same techniques that were employed by Rasul Allah (sal Allahu
alaihi wasallam) as a teacher.

Hadees ~ Yellow and Gold

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: "There is
ruin for the women covered with gold and coloured in yellow colour."
[Ibn Habban]
This warning is given to those women who are mad after jewelry and
fine dress and are thus negligent of their duties and responsibilitie
s as Muslimahs.
The yellow/ orange-yellow colour that comes from dying with saffron
was forbidden by the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) for men to
wear, as is gold. While these things are not forbidden for women they
are disliked in excess.
A preoccupation with one's dress,ornamentation and looks results from
clinging to the world. It shows an attachment to perishable things
that can only bring one ruin.
A meaningful sentence written ona gravestone read: "As you are, so we
were. As we are, so shall you be."

Story ~ Love Defeats Bigotry

I don't mean to portray myself as an enlightened soul. I've made
myshare of mistakes and I still struggle not to be judgmental or
reactive. But I've also had experiences that have shown me the way
forward. One was with my former sister-in-law, Crystal. I am divorced
now, but I was married for ten years. Laura (my ex-wife) and her
family were not Muslim, and her family had their reservations about
our marriage. Her mother expressed a fear that I would kidnap our
future children and take them to Egypt (even though I've never lived
in Egypt). "Like Sally Field in 'Not Without my Daughter'", she said.
One day I was at a restaurant with Laura, her mother and her sister.
When the waiter came to our table, he said to me, "As-salamu alaykum."
I did not know him, but I was wearing a kufi and had a beard. I
replied, "Wa alaykum as-salam." Crystal began laughing, and after the
dinner was over, when we were going to the car, she began saying,
"Salami, salami, baloney."
At the time I was in a mental statewhere I was fed up with bigotry. I
had experienced a lot of it, and Ihad no more patience for it. I told
Crystal that her behavior was rude and bigoted. She got extremely
angry, and after that I was a persona non-grata at my in-laws' house.
I was not invited to their home for any reason, andthere was no
communication whatsoever between me and them for more than a year.
After that my mother-in-law reached out to me tentatively, and
offereda makeshift apology, which I accepted. But Crystal remained
angry.
Later, Laura and I moved to Panama. The place where we lived was so
beautiful and peaceful, and the natives were so accepting of us, that
I found my heart healing. The in-laws still didn't quite accept me –
in fact Laura's father came to visit once and told me angrily that my
religion was ridiculous and backwards – but I found that it did not
bother me so much. WhenI returned to the USA for a visit I spoke to
Crystal. I said, "I apologize for my attitude in the past. I love you
and your family. You all mean a lot to me." I said that sincerely,
holding in my mindall the good I had experienced from Crystal over the
years, and forgiving the bad.
From that moment on, my relationship with Crystal was transformed. She
came to visit us in Panama and had a great time. After my divorce,
when I returned to California, Crystal actually began attending my
martial arts class. She became more open minded, began exploring
religious thinking outside of the narrow Christian fundamentalist box
she had always lived in. I'm not saying that any of that is because of
me. But what I can attest to is that ever since I gathered the resolve
to say to her, "I love you and I value you," she has not showed ahint
of bigotry or anger toward me, and in fact has become a pleasant
person to relate to.
I"m afraid I may be telling a string of random stories here. I don't
know if I'm communicating this thesis I have, this understanding, that
sincere love is transformational. When you can love someone without
desire,expectation, or judgment, it utterly changes your relationship
with that person, even with thosewho hate you. I believe this is
theessence of faith. It is the heart of da'wah. It is the Golden Rule.
I have given examples of one-on-one interaction, but I believe that
love and kindness can work their wonders just as well when it's one to
a thousand, or ten to a million, just as a single great ocean wave can
flood a whole city, except that love is a good flood that washes away
the fires of hatred.
Lead the Way
Do you want to see something different in the world? Show it. Do you
want to see things moving in a better direction? Then get stepping and
walk it, and I guarantee that others will follow, because they have
seen the problems as well, and they arewaiting for someone to lead the
way.
Do you want to be a better Muslim, father, mother, son, daughter,
sibling, or friend? Then be it. Now is the moment. The past is
prologue leading to this moment.
Are you waiting for someone elseto show love and kindness first? Are
you waiting for someone elseto be vulnerable or brave, to put himself
out there, to take the first step, to show the way? There is no
someone else. You are the someone else. You… are… someone.
Le'ts open ourselves to faith, love and kindness. Let's change the way
we move in the world, the way we behave with Allah, the way we treat
people, the way we interact with every person. Let us become
testaments to the power of these transformative behaviors, not through
our words but through our actions. Let's express a new sincerity from
our hearts and walk through the world like believers. Let's become
people of Allah, people of Jannah (Paradise), people of imaan (faith),
love and mercy

History ~ An interesting incident in history

After the killing of 'Ali ibn Abi Talib(radhi'Allahu `anhu), there was
a crackdown on the khawarij and one man in particular named 'Imran ibn
Hattan was being chased. He had escaped from the ruler 'Abd al-Malik
ibn Marwan (some say Hajjaj ibn Yusuf) and was being sought out in the
land in order to be punished – as he was a khariji who saw the killing
of 'Ali (radhi'Allahu `anhu) to be legitimate. Now 'Imran, despite his
views, was well-versed in poetry and knowledgeable of the Arab tribes
and lineages, and one of the reasons he was able to evade capture for
so long was that whenever he approached a certain tribe, he would
immediately ascribe to a near kindred of theirs, or ascribe to a near
clan of theirs. Due to the great number of subclans and branches
within a tribe, no-one really suspected him to be lying. This gave him
protection under their refuge although in reality, they had no idea
who he was and had never seen him before. But as is the age old
custom, they honoured the near kindred and hosted him as their guest.
It's said that during his plight as he fled, he settled with Rawh ibn
Zinba' who was from one of the Yemeni tribes. When Rawh asked about
his origin, he said he was from al-Azad, i.e. a Yemeni just like Rawh,
and this allowed him tobe accepted as near blood. Now, coincidentally,
Rawh used to attend the gatherings of 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan (the
ruler!), and listen to poetry and stories etc. Whenever Rawh heard a
peculiar or rare poem, he'd ask 'Imran about it, and 'Imran would not
only know the rare piece, but he'd also continue in its stanzas and
give Rawh more of its rare insights.
Rawh once went to 'Abd al-Malik and said to him "I have a neighbour
from al-Azad who, whenever I hear something from you O leader of the
faithful, he seems to know it well and in fact increases in it!" 'Abd
al-Malik said, "Recite some of his poetry to me." Rawh said a few
lines and 'Abd al-Malik (also of quick intellect) said, "The language
is 'Adnaniyyah (of North Arabia andnot Yemen), and I think the man is
no other than 'Imran ibn Hattan!" That night, in their gatherings,
they mentioned somelines of poetry but no-one in the gathering who
knew the author/poet was:
يا ضربة من تقي ما أراد بها
إلا ليبلغ من ذي العرش رضوانا
إني لأذكره حينا فأحسبه
أوفى البرية عند الله ميزان ا
'It was but a strike from a pious one who intended only
To attain the Pleasure of the Owner of the Throne
I remember him from time to time and think him to be
The closest to Allah when (deeds are) weighed on the Scale'
'Abd al-Malik said to Rawh, "Ask your friend about these lines of
poetry." When Rawh returned home, he asked 'Imran about the poem and
he said, "These are the lines of 'Imran ibn Hattan whereinhe praises
'Abdur-Rahman ibn Muljim, the murderer of 'Ali ibn Abi Talib
(radhia'Allahu `anhu)!" He exposed himself without knowing who he was
up against! So Rawh returned to 'Abd al-Malik and told him the answer
whereupon 'Abd al-Malik said, "Your companion is in fact 'Imran ibn
Hattan. Go and bring him to me." He went and said to 'Imran, "The
leader of the faithful would like to see you." Imran said, "I too
wanted to see him butI was too shy of asking you (!). Go ahead of me
and I will follow straight afterwards." So Rawh went back to 'Abd
al-Malik and told him the news. 'Abd al-Malik then said, "He will not
come and when you return, you shall not find him." He went back and
sure enough, 'Imran had fled but he left behind him a piece of
writing/poem…
يا روح كم من أخى مثوى نزلت به
قد ظن ظنك من لخم وغسان
حتى إذا خفته فارقت منزله
من بعد ما قيل عمران بن حطان
'O Rawh! How many of a brother's home have I settled in,
Who thought the same as you from the tribes of Lakhm and Ghassan!
Until I feared for myself and departed his home,
After it was said 'Imran ibn Hattan!
فاعذر أخاك ابن زنباع فإن له
في النائبات خطوبا ذات ألوان
يوماً يمان إذا لاقيت ذا يمن
وإن لقيت معدياً فعدناني
لو كنت مستغفراً يوماً لطاغية
كنت المقدم في سري وإعلاني
لكن أبت لي آيات مطهرة
عند التلاوة في طه وعمران
Excuse your brother O ibn Zinba' for he has,
Grave matters of varying colours to attend to!
One day Yemeni when I do meet a Yemeni,
And if I meet an 'Adnani, then I am 'Adnani too!
If I were ever to seek forgivenessfor a tyrant,
Then I would've done so openly and in secret!
But I've been halted by the pure verses,
Within the recitation of Ta-Ha and'Imran!'
(i.e. he cannot accept the leadership of 'Abd al-Malik and other
'tyrants' due to verses in Surah Ta-Ha and Aal 'Imran, hencehis khuruj
against the rulers).

Health - Scientists are trying to build human brain using the world’s most powerful computer.

It is intended to combine all the information so far uncovered about
its mysterious workings -- and replicate them on a screen, right down
to the level of individual cells and molecules.
If it works it could be revolutionary for understanding devastating
neurological diseasessuch as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, and even
shedding light into how we think, and make decisions.
Professor Henry Markram, based in Switzerland, is leading the project
and will be working with scientists from across Europe including the
Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute at Cambridge.
They hope to complete it within 12 years.
"The complexity of the brain, with its billions of interconnected
neurons, makes it hard for neuroscientists to truly understand how it
works. Simulating it will make it much easier -- allowing them to
manipulate and measure any aspect of the brain," he said.
Housed at a facility in Dusseldorf in Germany, the 'brain' will
feature thousands of three-dimensional images built around a
semi-circular 'cockpit' so scientists can virtually 'fly'
arounddifferent areas and watch how they communicate with each other.
It aims to integrate all the neuroscience research being carried out
all over the world -- an estimated 60,000 scientific papers every year
-- into one platform.
The project has received some funding from the EU and has been
shortlisted for a 1 billion euro EU grant, which will be decided next
month.
When complete it could be used to test new drugs, which could
dramatically shorten the time required for licencing them than human
trials, and pave the way for more intelligent robots and computers.
There are inevitably concerns about the consequences of this
'manipulation' and creating computers, which can think for themselves.
In Germany the media have dubbed the researchers 'Team Frankenstein'.
But Prof Markram said: "This will, when successful, help two billion
people annually who suffer from some type of brain impairment.
"This is one of the three grand challenges for humanity. We needto
understand earth, space and the brain. We need to understand what
makes us human," he added. Our brains have 100 billion neurons. Each
one performs billions of 'calculations' per second -- roughly similar
to a desktop computer.
So the brain computer will need to be able to do billion calculations
that will require the output of a nuclear power station.
Finding a way to power the supercomputer will be one of the
researchers' major challenges.

Islam - Believe in Allah, Because He Believes in You

Why were we created? Many Muslims will automatically respond, "To
worship Allah." That's true, but why does Allah want to be worshiped?
Furthermore, why did He create everything else – the stars, planets,
forests, seas, mountains, animals?…
Without presuming to know Allah's intentions, and returning to the
realm of the human for a moment, I will make a simple observation. As
a writer, one of the reasons I write is because the act of putting my
thoughts and feelings on paper satisfies something deep within me.
I've been writing creatively since I was a child, and to me it's not a
hobby but a calling. I'm a writer, therefore I write; and I am a
writer because I write.
The same is true for a painter or any other artist. I imagine if you
asked a painter why he paints, you might get many different answers:
*. "It makes me happy"
*. "It's my passion."
*. "To express my ideas."
*. "To make money."
*. "I don't know, I just do."
The bottom line is that it's the painter's nature to paint; it's her
calling, her function. She is a painter, therefore she paints; or she
paints, therefore she is a painter. Same difference.
Allah is Al-Khaaliq, The Creator. That is one of His names, one of His
attributes. He expresses this attribute by creating. You are a part of
that expression, and so am I. So is a blue whale, Mount Kilimanjaro,
the Grand Canyon, a dolphin, a mouse and an amoebum. Everything that
Allah created is amazing in its function and awesomely complex in its
design. Everything that He created is beautiful and purposeful.
Including you and me.
To create is an act of love. It is an act of faith. The Creator loves
youand believes in you. Believe in Him, believe in yourself, believe
inhumanity, and believe in the unique path that Allah has chosenfor
you.

If we would like to achieve success & gain greater blessings in what
we have or earn, we must learn to share whatever we have with others.
The Almighty has a special Mercy upon those who share their
possessions with others. Never let the heart be so deeply attached to
wealth or other belongings because the day we are tested in those
things, we will find it very difficult to overcome such tests or even
to understand the wisdom in the Almighty's Plan. From childhood we
should train our offspring to share their toys, food and other
belongings where possible so that as they grow they learn to love this
great habit and feel very happy & blessed to share. Some take sharing
as a burden whereas others claim not to have enough to be able to
share when in fact they have more than enough. The Great Companions
shared even at times of their own desperate need for the same item -
which was sometimes food and drink. Although we may not get to that
level of selflessness, if we aim there, we will be able to get nearer.
The Almighty says•►"You will never achieve true righteousness until
you spend from that which you love most." (3:92)
