Question:
With regard to promise, which is to keep a matter from being known to family, can the person lie when confronted with questions about the matter which will eventually lead to expose the promise?
Answer:
It is permittedand sometimes even obligatory, such as when there is undue harm or wrong in speaking the truthto lie in order to keep a secret. [Sharh al-Tariqa al-Muhammadiyya]
However, when it is possible to avoid revealing a secret through other than lyingsuch as skirting the topic or saying something vague that makes people understand other than the matter being concealedthen one should do so when able.
And Allah alone gives success
