Several years ago an Imam moved to London, United Kingdom. He often
took the bus from his home to the downtown area. Some weeks after
hearrived, he had occasion to ride the same bus. When he sat down, he
discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a twenty pence
(a.k.a 'tuppence') too much change.
As he considered what to do, he thought to himself,you better give the
twenty pence back. It would be wrong to keep it. Then he thought, "Oh,
forget it, it's only tuppence. Who would worry about this little
amount? Anyway the bus company already gets toomuch fare; they will
nevermiss it. Accept it as a gift from Allah (swt) and keep quiet."
When his stop came, the Imam paused momentarily at the door, then he
handed the twenty pence back to the driver and said, "Here, yougave me
too much change". The driver with asmile, replied,"Aren't you the new
Imam in this area? I have been thinking lately about going to worship
at your Mosque.I just wanted to see what you would do, ifI gave you
too much change."
When the Imam, stepped off the bus, his knees became weak and soft,
heliterally grabbed the nearest light pole, and held on for support,
and looked up to the heavens and cried: "Oh Allah, I almost sold You
and Islamfor twenty pence!"

A bus driver converts to Islam
2a] Sunnahs of Taraweeh Prayer

"Should I not be a thankful servant?" [9]
It is not being said that theTaraaweeh prayer offered in congregation
must be as long as this, but on mere reflection does it not leave much
to be questioned and sought when we compare our sadstate of affairs
today? What has befallen Muslimsthese days? In their Salaahand Qiyaam
is fast recitation of the verses of the Qur'aan and hurried movements
which hardly resemble the Ruku, Sujoodand other positions in Salaah -
what benefits can we possibly hope to secureby neglecting the Sunnah?
Best Time for Taraweeh:
The majority of mosques hold taraweeh prayer aftersalaat al-Ishaa, and
by doing so they are able to accommodate the varying needs and
conditions of those who attend, (i.e. amongst them there may be the
weak, sick, old etc.) attract more people due tothe convenient earlier
timing which in turn encourages families to bring along their younger
children and those being only a few of the benefits. Therefore it is
good thing and we know lslaam does not impose any hardships. However
if you are praying taraaweeh at home, then it is worth knowing that it
is best to delay the taraaweeh prayer to the last third portion of the
night. Allah's Messenger salla allahu alaihe wa-sallam said: "The
nearest that a slave comes to his Lord is during the middle of the
later portion of the night. If you can be among thosewho remember
Allaah, theExalted One, at that time then do so." [10]
Also, once when 'Umar ibn al-Kattaab went out during Ramadaan and
sawthe people praying taraaweeh, he commented, "prayer at thetime when
they sleep is better than at the time when they are praying it." Since
the people used to pray in the early part of the night. [11]
Know also dear reader; that it is the time when Allaah descends to the
lowest Heaven during the last third of the night, inquiring (though He
knows everything).
"[Is there anyone] who invokes Me, so that I may respond to his
invitation? [ls there anyone] who asksMe, so that I may grant him his
request? [Is there anyone] who seeks My forgiveness, so that I may
forgive him?" [12]
Laylatul-Qadr:
We are encouraged to exert our efforts even further; towards the end
of Ramadaan while seeking out Laylatul-Qadr. 'Aa'isha reported that
Allah's Messenger salla allahu alaihe wa-sallam used to exert himself
in devotion during the last ten nights to a greater extent than at any
other time. [13]
Allah's Messenger salla allahu alaihe wa-sallam said: "Whoever stands
[in prayer] in Lailatut Qadr outof Eemaan and seeking reward, then his
previous sins are forgiven." [Bukhariand Muslim]
Moderation:
As with all aspects in lslaam, moderation and consistency are the
cardinal words - avoiding the two extremes i.e. negligence and
excessiveness, and this is the correct position. He salla allahu
alaihe wa-sallam said: "The deedsof anyone of you will not save you
(from the hell fire)." They said, 'Even you (will not be saved by your
deeds) O Messenger of Allaah?" He said, "No, even I (will not be
saved) unlessand until Allaah bestows His Mercy on me. Therefore, do
good deeds properly. Sincerely and moderately, and worship Allaah in
the forenoon andduring a part of the night and always adopt a
middlemoderate, regular course whereby you will reach your target
(i.e. paradise)." [14]
Allah has ordained the compulsory prayer, after which the most
excellent prayer is the night prayer [15] and that which I have
mentioned regarding its characteristics is applicablein every prayer-
whether compulsory or voluntary (i.e. such as Taraaweeh). It is not
possible for us to perform prayer as it should be performed, or even
approach it, unless we know the detailed description of the Prophet's
(sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) prayer. [16] I hope that the
significance of the Taraaweeh prayer has been correctly established
and I pray thatit's a benefit to all those rushing to fulfill his
command. "Pray as you have seen me praying." [l7]

2] Sunnahs of Taraweeh Prayer

Ramadaan is an event in which the whole Muslim Ummah participates and
during this month many ofus observe Qiyaam al-Layl , also known as
Taraaweeh (literally, the break between individual prayers), which is
a Sunnahfor both men and women. It is performed after the Isha prayer
up until the end of the night i.e. before the Fajr prayer and prayed
in sets of two rak'aat each.
Taraaweeh has an important place in Ramadaan. To find out why read on:
Its Excellence and Merit from the Qur'aan:
During Ramadaan, we are not only pre-occupied withour daily activities
but are also subjected to hunger and thirst, and so naturallyat the
end of the day we become tired and cherish the prospect of a good
nights rest! However, in the Qur'aan Allah commends those who observe
the night prayer and He exhorts the believers towards it, "Verilythe
rising by night (for Tahajjud prayer) is very hard and most potent and
good for governing (the soul) and most suitable for(understanding) the
Word (of Allaah)" [Soorah al-Muzzammil (73):6]
From the Sunnah
"And whoever stands (in prayer) in Ramadan out of sincere faith and
hoping for a reward (from Allah) then all his previous sins will be
forgiven." [1]
In this Hadeeth the Prophet salla allahu alaihe wa-sallam wanted us to
earn this great reward, encouraging us towards taraaweeh. His
statement, "out of sincere faith hoping for a reward.." suggests that
in order to get reward one must purify his niyyah (intention) to
perform this act of worship.
Praying Taraaweeh in Congregation
"It is allowed to pray taraaweeh of the month ofRamadan in a
congregation just as it is allowed to pray them on an individual
basis. The majority of scholars, however prefer to pray them in
congregation." [2]
Aa'ishah reported that: "Allah's Messenger salla allahu alaihe
wa-sallam went out in the middle of the night and prayed in the
mosque, and the people prayed behind him,then in the morning people
spoke about it. Then a large number gathered (the second night), and
he prayed and they prayed behind him, then the people spoke about it
in the morning. On the third night the mosque was crowded, so Allah's
Messenger salla allahu alaihe wa-sallam came out and could not
accommodate the number of people, but he only came out for the
morning. Then when he finished themorning prayer he turned to the
people repeated theShahaadah and said: 'Indeed your presence wasnot
hidden from me, but I feared that it would be made obligatory upon
youand that you would not beable to mange it.' [3] So Allaah's
Messenger salla allahu alaihe wa-sallam passed away and the situation
remained like that."
When Prophet salla allahu alaihe wa-sallam was taken by Allaah, the
Sharee'ah had been completed and this fear had ceased (i.e. that
Taraaweeh would be made obligatory) and so it remained prescribed in
congregation - since the reason preventing it had ceased.
Tarteel - recitation in slow, rhythmic tones
It was the practice of the Prophet salla allahu alaihe wa-sallam to
recite one verse at a time, pausing after every verse. He used to
recite the Qur'aan in slow, measured, rhythmic tones as Allaah had
instructed him, not raising or hurrying, rather; his was"a recitation
clearly distinguishing each letter,"[4] so much so that he would
recite a soorah in such slow rhythmic tones that it would be longer
than it would seem possible." [5]
The Length and Beauty of the Prayer
There are a number of Ahadeeth which mention how the Prophet would
sometimes exceedingly lengthen his recitation in asingle rak'ah, so it
is not surprising when 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ood said: "I prayedwith the
Prophet salla allahu alaihe wa-sallam one night and he carried on
standing for so long that I was struck by a wrong idea." He was asked,
"What was this idea?" He said, "I thought Iwould sit down and leave
the Prophet salla allahu alaihe wa-sallam" [6]
And in another narration we learn that the Messenger salla allahu
alaihe wa-sallam recited Soorat al-Baqarah (286 verses), an-Nisaa'
(176 verses) and Aal-lmraan (200 verses) all in one standing. [7] Just
imagine that! How long does it take to recite just half of Soorat
al-Baqarah: then allof it, then Soorat an-Nisaa' etc!! And remember
the Prophet salla allahu alaihe wa-sallam recited in a 'slow, rhythmic
style' and then he would go into Rukoo' and Sujood. He salla allahu
alaihe wa-sallam used to make his Qiyaam (standing), his Ruku, his
standing after rukoo', his sujood, and his sitting between the two
sajdahs, nearly equal in length. [8] When 'Aa'isha asked why he salla
allahu alaihe wa-sallam offered such an unbearable prayer;which caused
his feet to swell due to the prolongedstanding, he humbly replied:
"Should I not be a thankful servant?"...

attended by the circumstances generally associated with traveling,
should be deemed sufficient justification for not fasting.
Jurists agree that one does not have to fast on the day of commencing
ajourney; one may eat either at the point of departure or after the
actual journey has commenced. Either course is sanctioned by the
practice of the Companions. Jurists, however, are not agreed as to
whether or not the residents of a city under attack may abstain from
fasting even though theyare not actually traveling. Ibn Taymiyah
favors the permissibility of abstention from fasting and supports his
view with very forceful arguments.
5. This indicates that fasting need not be confined, exclusively, to
Ramadan. For those whofail to fast during that month owing to some
legitimate reason God has kept the door of compensation open during
other months of the year so that they need not be deprived of the
opportunity to express their gratitude to Him for His great bounty in
revealing the Qur'an.
It should be noted here that fasting in Ramadan has not only been
declared an act of worship and devotion and a means to nourish piety
but has also been characterized as an act ofgratefulness to God for
His great bounty of true guidance in the form of the Qur'an. In fact,
the best way of expressing gratitude for someone's bounty or
benevolence isto prepare oneself, to thebest of one's ability, to
achieve the purpose for which that bounty has been bestowed. The
Qur'an has been revealedso that we may know the way that leads to
God's good pleasure, follow that way ourselves and direct the world
along it. Fasting is an excellent means by which to prepare ourselves
for shoulderingthis task. Hence fasting during the month of the
revelation of the Qur'an is more than an act of worship and more than
an excellent course of moral training; it is also an appropriate form
for the expression of our thankfulness to God for the bounty of the
Qur'an.

along it. Fasting is an excellent means by which to prepare ourselves
for shoulderingthis task. Hence fasting during the month of the
revelation of the Qur'an is more than an act of worship and more than
an excellent course of moral training; it is also an appropriate form
for the expression of our thankfulness to God for the bounty of the
Qur'an.

Fasting is for a fixed number of days, and if one of you be sick, or
if one of you be on a journey, you will fast the same number of other
days later on. For those who are capable of fasting (but still do not
fast) there is a redemption: feeding a needy man for each day missed.
Whoever, voluntarily, does more good than is required, will find it is
better for him; and that you shouldfast is better for you, if you only
know. Quran 2:184
During the month of Ramadan the Qur'an wassent down as a guidanceto
the people with clear signs of the true guidance, and as the Criterion
(between right and wrong). So those of you who live to see that month
should fast it, andwhoever is sick or on a journey should fast the
same number of other days instead. Allah wants ease and not hardship
for you so that you may complete the number of days required,magnify
Allah for what He has guided you to, and give thanks to Him. Quran
2:185

revealed gradually. In the beginning the Prophet had instructed the
Muslims tofast three days in every month, though this was not
obligatory. When theinjunction in the present verse was later revealed
in 2 A.H., a degree of relaxation was introduced: it was stipulated
that those who did not fast despite their capacity to endure it were
obliged to feed one poor person as an expiation for each day
ofobligatory fasting missed(see verse 184). Another injunction was
revealed later (see verse 185) and here the relaxation in respect of
able-bodied persons was revoked. However, for the sick, thetraveler,
the pregnant, the breast-feeding women and the aged who could not
endure fasting, the relaxation was retained.

toprevent people from fasting so that they would not lack energy for
the fight. It has been reported by 'Umar that two military expeditions
took place in the month of Ramadan. The first was the Battle of Badr
and the second the conquest of Makka. On both occasions the Companions
abstained from fasting, and, according to Ibn 'Umar, on the occasion
of the conquest of Makka the Prophet proclaimed that people should not
fast since it was a day of fighting. In other Traditions the Prophet
is reported to have said that people should not fast when they had
drawn close. to the enemy, since abstention from fasting would lead to
greater strength.

Kindness surely paysback
One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his
way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he
washungry.
He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost
his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal
he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so
broughthim a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked,
"How much do I owe you?"
"You don't owe me anything," she replied."Mother has taught us never
to accept pay for a kindness." He said....."Then I thank you from my
heart."
Year's later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors
were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called
in a specialist to study her rare disease. After a long struggle, the
battle was won. Finally business office pass the final bill to
specialist for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the
edge and the bill was sent back.
When she got the bill, shefeared to open it, for she was sure it would
take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and
something caught her attention on the side of the bill.
She read these words....."Paid in full with one glass of milk"

she needed a new dress. I don't normally like to go shopping and I'm
not a patient person, but we setoff for the mall together. We visited
nearly every store that carried ladies' dresses, and my mother tried
on dress after dress, rejecting them all. As the day wore on, I grew
weary.
Finally, at our last stop, my mother tried on a lovely blue
three-piece dress. The blouse had a bow at the neckline, and as I
stood in the dressing room with her, I watched as she tried, with much
difficulty, to tie the bow. Her hands were so badly crippled from
arthritis that she couldn't do it. Immediately, my impatience gave way
to an overwhelming wave ofcompassion for her. I turned away to try and
hide the tears that welled up involuntarily. Regaining my composure,I
turned back to tie the bow for her.
Our shopping trip was over, but the event was etched indelibly in my
memory. For the rest of the day, my mind kept returning to that
momentin the dressing room and to the vision of my mother's hands
trying to tie that bow. Those lovinghands that had fed me, bathed me,
dressed me, caressed and comforted me, and, most of all, prayed for
me, were now touching me in the most remarkable manner.
Later in the evening, I went to my mother's room, took her hands in
mine, kissed them and, much to her surprise, told her that to me they
were the most beautiful hands in the world.
I can only pray that some day my hands, and my heart, will have earned
such a beauty of their own.

He is unknown on earth but well known in heaven
Abu Huraira says (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of
Allah (peace and blessingsbe upon him) said: Allah Almighty loves from
among His creatures the purest, the unknown and the innocent ones;
those whose heads are not combed, whose faces are dusty and whose
stomachs are empty; those who are not allowed to enter the courts of
the leaders and the kings; and are rejected if they should askthe hand
of wealthy girls. If they are absent nobody would ask about them and
once they appear no one is pleased to see them; when these people
become sick no one visits them and once they die none attend their
funerals.
The Prophet was then asked: How can we meet one of them O Messenger of
Allah? He said: One such person is Uways Al Qarani. The Companions
asked: And who is Uways Al Qarani? He said: A wide eyed white person,
broad shouldered, with a straight built body. He always has his beard
closeto his bosom, with his eyes fixed on the place of his
prostration, putting his right hand on his left hand, reciting the
Quran and weeping upon himself. He has dirty clothes and no one cares
for him. He is unknown onearth but well known in heaven. If he swears
uponAllah, Allah will surely fulfil his oath. Under his left shoulder
he has a white brilliant spot. On the Day of Judgement it will be said
to the slaves of Allah: Enter Paradise, and Uways will be told: Stop
here to make intercesion. Then Allah will make him intercede in favour
a large number of poeple, equivalent to the tribes of Rabiah and
Muddar. O Umer and you Ali, if you should meet him ask him to seek
forgiveness of Allah for you; for Allah will surely forgive you.

Do you knw whats this?
Roomman (رمّان ) is the Arabic word for pomegranate.
It has been mentioned three times in the Quran:
1. It is He Who sends downwater (rain) from the sky, and with it We
bring forth vegetation of all kinds, andout of it We bring forth green
stalks, from which We bring forth thick clustered grain. And out of
the date-palm and its spathe come forth clusters of dates hanging low
and near, and gardens of grapes, olives and pomegranates, each similar
(in kind) yet different (in variety and taste). Look at their fruits
when they begin to bear, and the ripeness thereof. Verily! In these
things there are signs for people who believe. [6:99]
2. And it is He Who produces gardens trellised and untrellised, and
date-palms, and crops of different shape and taste (its fruits and its
seeds) and olives, and pomegranates, similar (in kind) and different
(in taste). Eat of their fruit when they ripen, but pay the due
thereof (its Zakât, according to God's Orders 1/10th or 1/20th) on the
day of its harvest, and waste not by extravagance. Verily, He likes
not Al-Musrifûn (those who waste by extravagance). [6:141]
3. In them (both) will be fruits, and date- palms andpomegranates. [55:68]
Benefits:
Pomegranates, another fruit mentioned in the Qur'an, contain a
plentiful supply of potassium as well as such minerals as phosphorus,
calcium, iron, and sodium, and vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, and C. Acting
together with sodium, potassium regulates the body's water equilibrium
and ensures that the heart beats normally. By maintaining the body's
potassium-sodiu m balance, it also helps the nervous and muscular
senses to function regularly, prevents edema,and decreases the amount
of sugar circulating in the blood. Pomegranates revive tired muscles
and enable them to move easily, and also strengthenthe heart.
➬ Nutrients and phytochemicals
Pomegranate aril juice provides about 16% of an adult's daily vitamin
C requirement per 100 ml serving, and is a good source of vitamin
B5(pantothenic acid), potassium and polyphenols, such as tannins and
flavonoids.
Pomegranates are listed ashigh-fiber in some charts of nutritional
value. That fiber, however, is entirely contained in the edible seeds
which also supply unsaturated oils. People who choose to discard the
seeds forfeit nutritional benefits conveyed by the seed fiber, oils
and micronutrients.
The most abundant polyphenols in pomegranate juice are the
hydrolyzable tannins called ellagitannins formedwhen ellagic acid
binds with acarbohydrate. Punicalagins are tannins with free-radical
scavenging properties in laboratory experiments and with potential
human effects. Punicalagins are absorbed into the human body and may
have dietary value as antioxidants, but conclusive proof of efficacyin
humans has not yet been shown. During intestinal metabolism by
bacteria, ellagitannins and punicalagins are convertedto urolithins
which have unknown biological activity in vivo.
Other phytochemicals include polyphenolic catechins, gallocatechins,
and anthocyanins, such as prodelphinidins , delphinidin, cyanidin,
andpelargonidin . The ORAC(antioxidant capacity) of pomegranate juice
was measured at 2,860 units per 100 grams.
Many food and dietary supplement makers use pomegranate phenolic
extracts as ingredients in their products instead of the juice. One of
these extracts is ellagic acid, which may become bioavailable only
after parent molecule punicalagins are metabolized. However, ingested
ellagic acid from pomegranate juice does not accumulate in the blood
in significant quantities and is rapidly excreted. Accordingly,
ellagic acid from pomegranate juice does not appear to be biologically
important in vivo.
➬ Potential health benefits
In preliminary laboratory research and clinical trials, juice of the
pomegranate may be effective in reducing heart disease riskfactors,
including LDL oxidation, macrophage oxidative status, and foam cell
formation. In an articlepublished in the American Journal of Clinical
Nutritionin 2000, researchers detailed an experiment in which healthy
adult men and unhealthy mice consumed pomegranate juice daily. After
two weeks, the healthy men experienced increased antioxidant levels,
which resulted in a ninety percent drop in LDL cholestoral oxidation.
In the mice, "oxidation of LDLby peritoneal macrophages was reducedby
up to 90% after pomegranate juice consumption..." .
In a limited study of hypertensive patients, consumption of
pomegranate juice for twoweeks was shown to reduce systolic blood
pressure by inhibiting serum angiotensin-con verting enzyme. Juice
consumption may also inhibit viral infections while pomegranate
extracts have antibacterial effects against dental plaque.

it, then he has done well.

gaze and safeguards his tongue from the repulsive speech that is
forbidden, disliked, or which has no benefit, aswell as controlling
the restof his body parts.
In a hadeeth reported by Al-Bukhaaree:
"Whosoever does not abandon false speech and the acting upon it, Allah
is not in need of him leaving off his food and drink." [Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree, AbuDawood, at-Tirmidhee andIbn Maajah]
Another characteristic of the specific fast is that one does not
overfill himself with food during the night. Instead, he eats in due
measure, for indeed, the son of Aadam does notfill a vessel more evil
than his stomach.
If he were to eat his fill during the first part of the night, he
would not make good use of himself for theremainder of the night. In
the same way, if he eats tohis fill for suhoor , he does not make good
use of himself until the afternoon. This is because excessive eating
breeds laziness and lethargy. Therefore, the objective of fasting

Story of a pious woman at the time of Ferawoon
On the Prophet Muhammad's (sul Allahu alayhi wassalaam) Night Journey
to Jerusalem:
The Prophet (sul Allahu alayhi wassalaam) smelled a very nice odor. He
asked Jibril about this pleasant scent and Jibril informed him this
good smell was coming from the grave of the woman whose duty used to
be to comb Pharaoh's daughter's hair.
This woman was a good, pious believer. One day, asshe was combing
Pharaoh's daughter's hair,the comb fell from her hand. At this she
said,"Bismillah." Pharaoh's daughter asked her, "Do you have a god
other than my father?" The woman said, "Yes. My Lord and the Lord of
your father is Allah." Pharaoh's daughter told her father what had
happened. Pharaoh demanded this woman blaspheme and leave Islam, but
she refused. At that, Pharaoh threatened to kill her children.
He brought a great pot of water and built a great fire under it. When
the water boiled, Pharaoh brought her children and started to drop
them into that pot one after the other. Throughout all this,the woman
remained steadfast to Islam, even when Pharaoh reached her youngest
child--a little boy still breast feeding--but she felt pity for him.
At that, Allah enabled this child to speak. He said to his mother, "O
Mother, be patient. The torture of theHereafter is far more severe
than the torture of this life, and do not be reluctant, because you
areright."
At this the woman requested Pharaoh collecther bones and the bones of
her children and bury them in the same grave. Pharaoh promised her
that--then dropped her into that boiling water. She died as a martyr.
The good odor the Prophet (sul Allahu alayhi wassalaam) smelled coming
from her grave is an indication of her high status.

A few privileged Afghan women have been caught smiling for AP cameras,
but many Afghan women, men and children are silently dying behind the
burqa of U.S. deceit.
The facts are simple. Massive food distribution programs put in place
prior to 9-11 in response to widespread famine were derailed by the
anticipation of and then the actual U.S. bombing campaign, and have
been even further set back by the Taliban's retreat. According to the
New YorkTimes (11/30/01), "In the past two weeks, the tonnage [of aid]
delivered dropped to a pace less than half of what it had been in the
previous two weeks." The problem is that the "towns and cities are so
chaotic that relief agencies cannot safely operate. Many roads are off
limits because of lawlessness and banditry."
Those of us who opposed the U.S. war in A fghanistan nevertheless saw
its apparent rapid resolution as an opportunity to at least get much
needed supplies intothe country. Having routedthe enemy, perhaps the
United States would stop the bombing, allowing food trucks to move in
from across the border. But, instead, the opposite is true. As of this
writing (December 5), the bombing continues, civilian populations are
leftat the mercy of maraudinggangs, and food aid dwindles.
There are a few simple things we could do that would immediately turn
down the torture in Afghanistan.
First, the U.S. should stop bombing. There is no real accounting yet
of the civilian casualty rate, but reports in the last few days claim
that U.S. bombshit four villages near Tora Bora, possibly killing
hundreds (NYT 12/3/01). This is an unethical and illegal use of U.S.
firepower. If it's Osama binLaden who we are still after, it is never
too late toapprehend him in a manner that accords with international
law -- present proper evidence and allow the UN to mount a prudent,
ground-based multilateral campaign to capture him. In any case, since
there is no Afghan enemy mounting any kind of defense or engaging in
battle, there is no excuse for large-scale bombings --whether directed
by the U.S. or the UN.
Second, the bridge to Uzbekistan, which is a key passage for aid
trucks, should be secured. And weshould meet Uzbekistan's demand that
an international force providesecurity at their Afghan border. Instead
American military officials are sayingthat although they"recognize the
urgency of opening the bridge from Uzbekistan, [U.S.] troops will not
be protecting the border."
There is callous disregard for human life in this casual
acknowledgement of the urgency. American officials understand the
consequences of their inactivity, but are blithely sitting back and
saying they want Afghan forces --not foreign troops -- to police the
roadways, whenthe only Afghan forces thatexist in the country
are"lawless bandits," and it is American officials themselves that
installed them. Having destabilized the country to the point where it
is not even safe for aid trucks to travel, it seems the U.S. is
washing its hands of the disaster.

Administration officials, the Washington Post reported that `the
U.S.Central Command, which oversees the war in Afghanistan, is
opposing the imminent deployment of peacekeepers in areas freed from
Taliban control out of concern this could encumber U.S. military
operations.'"

brief aside mentions the"Pentagon's unwillingness to take part in any
peacekeeping force or to favor placing peacekeepersanywhere where they

secure Kabul, the northern half of the country, and aidroutes. On

Times when it seems like there's no one left who matters.
That's when faith counts more than ever. That's when faith is tested.
Don't give up. Keep hope in your heart. Remember that in the darkest
cave, the deepest canyon, the most barren desert, Allah is still
there.
Let faith carry you at thosetimes, and let Allah guide you, and you
will come through to a better place. It's a promise from Allah:
"And whoever is conscious of Allah, He will make for him a way out
(from every difficulty). And He will provide for him from (sources) he
never could imagine. And whoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will
suffice him. Verily, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Indeed Allah

patient with them until you meet your Lord, then it may be said to you

A story and an attitude

friends, sat by his grave with his head bowed, making du'aa for him.
Thus I knew what kind of friends could benefit a man after his death.
My brother, beware lest you become one of those of whom Allah says
(interpretation of the meaning):
"And (remember) the Day when the Dhaalim (wrongdoer, oppressor,
polytheist) will bite at his hands, he will say:
"Oh! Would that I had taken a path with the Messenger (Muhammad).
"Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so and so as a Khaleel
(an intimate friend)!
He indeed led me astray from the Reminder (this Qur'aan) after it had
come to me."
And Shaytaan (Satan) is to man ever a deserter in the hour of need"

My dear brother, before the door is closed, decide from now, and do
not delay, the path that you want to follow, which will be your path
in this world and in the Hereafter.
What great joy and happiness is to be found when a person comes backto
his Lord, regretting (his sin) and joining the caravan of the
righteous. By Allah it is joy which no one tastes except those who
experience this.
My brother in Allah, if you have resolved to repent and turn back to
your Lord, then know that thereare conditions which must be met when
repenting:
1- Regret for what is past.
2- Giving up the sin.
3- Resolving not to go back to it. But if you do it again, then repent
to Allahagain but your resolve must be genuine.
4- The repentance must come before the death-rattle reaches the throat
and before the sun rises in the west.

"And those who invoke not any other ilaah (god) along with Allah, nor
kill such person as Allah has forbidden, except for just cause, nor
commit illegal sexual intercourse and whoever does this shall receive
the punishment.
The torment will be doubled to him on the Dayof Resurrection, and he
will abide therein in disgrace;
Except those who repent and believe (in Islamic Monotheism), and do
righteous deeds; for those,Allah will change their sinsinto good
deeds, and Allahis Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful" [al-Furqaan 25:68-70]
This is a great blessing anda great deal, for Allah will change your
sins into gooddeeds! Allah is Most Great. No one misses out on sucha
great deal except one who is ignorant or who does not care about this
blessing.
So repent! my dear brothers and sisters, if you want this great deal,
Allah will change your sins into good deeds.
And listen to what your beloved Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah
be upon him) said to encourage people to repent:
"Allah is more delighted with the repentance of His slave than one of
you whosuddenly finds his camel laden with supplies after losing it in
a barren land." (Agreed upon)
And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
"Allah says: "O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and put your
hope in Me, I will forgive you no matter what you have done, and Ido
not mind. O son of Adam, if your sins were to reach up to the clouds
of the sky, then you were to ask Me for forgiveness, I will forgive
you and I do not mind."
And he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Allah says,
"O My slaves, you commit sinsby night and by day, but I forgive all
sins. So ask Me for forgiveness and I will forgive you."
And he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Allah
stretches forth His hand by night to accept the repentance of those
who sinned during the day, and He stretches forth His hand by day to
accept the repentance of those who sinned during the night. (This will
continue) until the sun rises from the west."
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw
a woman looking for her young son among the prisoners of war. When she
found him, she embraced him and gave him her breast. The Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Do you think that
she could throw her child into the fire?" They said, "No." He said,
"Allah ismore merciful towards His slaves than this woman is towards
her child."
Allah is Most Great! After knowing of this generosity, can we ignore
the matter of repentance? Can we delay repenting? O Allah, glory be to
You, howmerciful You are. Glory be to You, how kind You are. Glory be
to You, how generous You are.
"When my heart grew hard and I did not know where to turn,
I made the hope of Your forgiveness my way out.
I thought that my sin was so great, but when I compared it
To Your forgiveness, my Lord, Your forgiveness was greater.
You never cease to forgive sin, and You never cease
To be generous, out of Your bounty and kindness." [Arabic poetry]
Be frank with yourself
What is keeping you from repenting and following the path of
righteousness?I can imagine you saying,"My family, community and
friends. I am afraid of repenting then going back to my sin. My sins
are so many, how can I be forgiven? I am worried about my family and
my wealth." I say to you: Do you think that you will saythat to your
Lord on the Day when you meet Him? No, by Allah! These are imaginary
obstacles which can only be overcome by one who fears his Lord.
"If the soul had great ambitions,
The body would be exhausted by trying to fulfil the desires of the
soul." [Arabic poetry]
Be proud of your religion, and sincerely resolve to dogood and to
continue doing so, putting your trust in Allah. And remember the mercy
of your Lord and the vast extent of His forgiveness.
My brother, if the Angel of Death were to come to you at this moment,
would you be content to meet your Lord in this state? My brother,
please do not run away from yourself or try to avoid checking on
yourself. If you do not check on yourself today, then in your grave
you will regret it, at the time when regret will be of no avail.
A new beginning
Know that repentance is not limited only to this month it may take
place during this or any other month. But why should your new
beginning not take place in the month of goodness and blessing? A man
may be born twice, on the day when he emerges from the darkness of his
mother's womb into the light of thisworld, and on the day when he
emerges from the darkness of sin into the light of obedience. So be
like this.

has opened the gate of repentance to His slaves, and I send blessings

and achieve happiness in this world and in the Hereafter. I ask Allah
to make it of benefit to those who read it and tell others about it,
and I ask Allah to forgive sins both open and secret.
My dear brothers and sisters,
I congratulate you on the occasion of this blessed month, the month of
repentance, forgiveness and ransom from the Fire, the month of
goodness and blessing, the month ofgenerosity and kindness. I say to
myself, to you and to everyone who is falling short in his duties
towardshis Lord (this Arabic poem):
O you who did not have enough of sin in Rajab,
So he continued to disobey his Lord during the month of Sha'baan,
Now these two months have been followed by the month of patience,
So do not let this be a month of sin too.
Recite the Qur'aan and glorify your Lord during this month, striving
your utmost,
For it is the month of glorificationand Qur'aan.
The month of Ramadaan has come
So come to Allah, O seeker of good.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When the
first night of Ramadaan comes, the devils and demons are chained up,
and the gates of Hell are closed and not one gate of it is opened. The
gates of Paradise are opened and not one gate of it is closed. And a
caller calls out: "O seeker of good, come to Allah; O seeker of evil,
desist." Allahwill have ransomed some people from the Fire, and that
happens every night." (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Maajah with a
hasan isnaad).
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that
theProphet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Ameen,
ameen, ameen." It was said,"Messenger of Allah, you climbed up on the
minbar and said, "Ameen, ameen, ameen." He said, "Jibreel (peace be
upon him), cameto me and said, "Whoever witnesses the month of
Ramadaan and is not forgiven so he enters Hell, may Allah cast him
away. Say Ameen." So I said Ameen."" (This hadeeth was narrated by
Ahmad and is saheeh).
Yes! Ramadaan has come, so turn to your Lord Whom you have disobeyed,
beseeching Himand fearing Him, regretting and weeping,and say,
"O God of the Universe, I am returning (to You)."
"O Giver of all good things, give me guidance,
For there is no good without guidance.
Overlook my mistakes with forgiveness, kindness and mercy,
For no one else can bestow forgiveness." [Arabic poetry]
My brothers and sisters, if you are not forgiven, if your eyes do not
shed tears and your heart does not break before your Lordin this
month, then when?
My brothers and sisters, why do you not shed tearsfor fear of your
Lord even once? Do you not feel that your heart is close to your Lord
during this month? Do you not think that this is an opportunity for
you to draw closer to your Lord and increase in humility, repentance
and submission, so that it may be the true beginning of your returning
to your Lord so that you may be more closely connected with Allah?
"While as for those who accept guidance, He increases their guidance and
bestows on them their piety" [Muhammad 47:17]
O man!
Allah rebukes us and tells us (interpretation of the meaning):
"O man! What has made you careless about your Lord, the Most
Generous?" [al-Infitaar 82:6]
Indeed, O man, what has made you careless about your Lord, so that you
have become so audaciousin disobeying Him and transgressing His
limits? Is it because you are ignoring His blessings? Or because you
forget that Heis always watching over you, and that He is almighty?
"I am the one who closes the doors, striving in sin (in secret),
Although the eye of Allah is watching me.
How patient Allah is with me, when He lets me off
Although I persist in my sin, and He covers me." [Arabic poetry]
My brothers and sisters! Donot look at how small yoursin is, but look
at how great is the One Whom you are disobeying. My brothers and
sisters! Do not let Allah be the one whom you care the least about of
all those who are watching you.
Good news for you
Here I bring you good news from your Lord and His Messenger (peace and
blessings of Allah be upon him). Allah says (interpretation of the
meaning):
"Say: "O 'Ibaadi (My slaves)who have transgressed against themselves
(by committing evil deeds andsins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah,
verily, Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most
Merciful" [al-Zumar 39:53]

1a] Reaping the Benefitsof Ramadhan

So we must check ourselves, are we following the behaviour ofthe
Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him)? For example:
Do we give salaam to those we don't know and those we do know? Do we
follow the manners of Islaam, by telling the truth and only telling
the truth? Are we sincere? Are we merciful tothe creation?
LESSON 6: Recognizing that one can change for the better
The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said,
"Every son of Adam sins and the best of the sinnersare those who
repent." (Ibn Maajah) Allah providesmany opportunities to repent to
Him and seek Hisforgiveness. If one was disobedient they can become
obedient.
LESSON 7: Being more charitable
Ibn `Abbaas said, "The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace
upon him) was the most charitable amongst the people, and he used to
be more so in the month of Ramadaan when Jibreel used to meet him on
everynight of Ramadaan till the end of the month…" (al-Bukhaaree) The
Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, "He who
gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, hewill receive the
same reward as him, without nothing being reduced from the fasting
person's reward." (at-Tirmidhee)
LESSON 8: Sensing the unity of the Muslims
The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, "…
Those of you who will live after me will see many differences. Then
you mustcling to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided
khaleefahs. Hold fast to it and stick to it." (Aboo Daawood) In this
month we sense that thereis a possibility for unity, because we all
fast together, we break fast together, we all worship Allah together,
and we pray Salaatul-`Eid together. Therefore we sense that the unity
of Muslims is possible. It is possible for Muslims to be a single
body, but this will only be achieved when obedience is only to Allah
and His Messenger.
LESSON 9: Learning discipline
The Prophet (ma Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) made us
adhere to discipline and strictness, strictness that does not lead to
fanaticismor going outside the bounds that Allah has laid down. One
cannot knowingly break the fast before the sunset, as this will not be
accepted by Allah. Muslims should learnto be very strict in their
lives, because they are people of an important message, which they
moldtheir lives around.
LESSON 10: Teaching the young to worship Allah
It was the practice of the people of Madeenah, that during the fast of
`Aashooraa (which is now a recommended fast of one day) to get their
children to fast with them. When the children would cry of hunger and
thirst, their parents would distract their attention by giving them
some sort of toy to play with. The children would break their fast
with their parents. (as mentioned in al-Bukhaaree).
So the young should be brought to the masjid and they should pray with
their parents, so that they are able to get into the habit of becoming
worshippers of Allah. If one does not encourage children to fast when
they are young, they will find it very difficult to fast for thirty
days at the age of puberty. This is why the Prophet (may Allah send
His blessing and peace upon him) said, "Commandyour children to pray
at the age of seven and spank them at the age of ten (if they do not
pray." (Haakim)
LESSON 11: Caring for one's health

So we must check ourselves, are we following the behaviour ofthe
Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him)? For example:
Do we give salaam to those we don't know and those we do know? Do we
follow the manners of Islaam, by telling the truth and only telling
the truth? Are we sincere? Are we merciful tothe creation?
LESSON 6: Recognizing that one can change for the better
The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said,
"Every son of Adam sins and the best of the sinnersare those who
repent." (Ibn Maajah) Allah providesmany opportunities to repent to
Him and seek Hisforgiveness. If one was disobedient they can become
obedient.
LESSON 7: Being more charitable
Ibn `Abbaas said, "The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace
upon him) was the most charitable amongst the people, and he used to
be more so in the month of Ramadaan when Jibreel used to meet him on
everynight of Ramadaan till the end of the month…" (al-Bukhaaree) The
Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, "He who
gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, hewill receive the
same reward as him, without nothing being reduced from the fasting
person's reward." (at-Tirmidhee)
LESSON 8: Sensing the unity of the Muslims
The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, "…
Those of you who will live after me will see many differences. Then
you mustcling to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided
khaleefahs. Hold fast to it and stick to it." (Aboo Daawood) In this
month we sense that thereis a possibility for unity, because we all
fast together, we break fast together, we all worship Allah together,
and we pray Salaatul-`Eid together. Therefore we sense that the unity
of Muslims is possible. It is possible for Muslims to be a single
body, but this will only be achieved when obedience is only to Allah
and His Messenger.
LESSON 9: Learning discipline
The Prophet (ma Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) made us
adhere to discipline and strictness, strictness that does not lead to
fanaticismor going outside the bounds that Allah has laid down. One
cannot knowingly break the fast before the sunset, as this will not be
accepted by Allah. Muslims should learnto be very strict in their
lives, because they are people of an important message, which they
moldtheir lives around.
LESSON 10: Teaching the young to worship Allah
It was the practice of the people of Madeenah, that during the fast of

Reaping the Benefitsof Ramadhan
In the month of Ramadaanit is very important that we spent a few
moments to understand some of thewisdoms and lessons that we can learn
from this month of fasting.
Unfortunately, many Muslims come in to this month and they are as a
companion of the Prophet,peace be upon him, said:"Let it not be that
the day that you fast and the day that you break fast be equal."
Meaning, one's behaviour, attitude and outlook are the same whether
one fasts or not, i.e. fasting has no effect upon that person. This is
why we need to reflect on some of these lessons.
LESSON 1: Gaining Taqwaa
Allah legislated fasting for gaining taqwaa,
"O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed upon you as it has
been prescribed upon those before you, so that you may attain taqwaa."
(meaning of Soraat ul Baqarah (2):183)
Taqwaa in this case meansto make a shield between oneself and Allah's
anger and Hellfire. So we should ask ourselves, when we break our
fasts, 'Has this fasting day made us fear Allah more? Has it
resultedthat we want to protect ourselves from the hellfire or not?
LESSON 2: Drawing closerto Allah
This is achieved by recitingand reflecting on Al-Qur'aan during night
and day, attending the taraaweeh prayers, remembering Allah, sittingin
circles of knowledge and, for those who can, making `umrah. Also for
those who can, making I`tikaaf (seclusion) in the last ten nights of
Ramadaan, so as to leave all worldly pursuits and seclude oneself in a
masjidjust thinking of Allah, so asto bring oneself closer to Allah
(SWT). When one sins, one feels distant fromAllah. That is why one
might find it heard to readthe Qur'aan and come to the masjid.
However, the obedient worshipper feels closer to Allah and wants to
worship Allah more, because he is not shy fromhis sins.
LESSON 3: Acquiring patience and strong will
Allah has mentioned patience more than seventy times in the Qur'aan
and has commanded patience in more than sixteen ways in His Book. So
when one fasts, and gives up one's food and drink, and one's marital
sexual relations forthose hours, one learns restraint and patience.
ThisUmmah needs man and women that are strong willed, who can stand
upon the Sunnah and the Book of Allah and not waver in front of the
enemies of Allah. We do not need emotional people, who just raise
slogans and shout, but when the time comes to stand upon something
firm, they cannot do so, they waver.
LESSON 4: Striving for Ihsaan (righteousness and sincerity) and
staying away from riyaa' (showing off)
Ihsaan means to worship Allah as if one seeks Him, and even though one
doesnot see Him, He sees all. Hasan al-Basree said, "By Allah, in the
last twenty years, I have not said a word or taken something with my
hand or refrained to take something with my hand or stepped forth or
stepped back, except that I have thought beforeI have done any action,
'Does Allah love this action? Is Allah pleased with this action?' So
when one is fasting, one should gain this quality of watching oneself
and also staying away from riyaa' (showing off). That is why Allah
said in a hadeeth qudsee, "Fasting is for Me and I reward it."
(al-Bukhaaree) Allah singles out fasting from allother types of
worship saying, "Fasting is for Me", because no one knows whether you
are fasting ornot, except Allah. For example, when one is praying or
giving charity or making tawaaaf, one can be seen by the people, so
one might do the actionseeking the praise of the people. Sufyaan
ath-Thawree used to spend the nights and the days crying and the
peopleused to ask him, "Why do you cry, is it due to the fear of
Allah? He said, 'No.' They said, "Is it due to the fear of the
Hellfire?" He said, 'No. It is not the fear of Hellfire that makes me
cry, what makes me cry is that I have been worshipping Allah all
theseyears and doing scholarly teaching, and I am not certain that my
intentions are purely for Allah.'"
LESSON 5: Refinement of manners, especially those related to
truthfulness and discharging trusts.
The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said,
"Whoever does not abandon falsehood in word and action, then Allah
(SWT) has no need that he should heave his food and drink."
(al-Bukhaaree) What we learn from this, is that we must pay attention
to the purification of our manners. The Prophet (may Allah send His
blessing and peace upon him) said, "was sent to perfect good manners."

Twenty Five Ways to Get the Most Out of Ramadhan
1. Fast Ramadhan with belief and truly seeking the reward of Allah the Most High so that He may forgive you your past sins.
2. Beware of breaking your fast during the days of Ramadhan without a valid Islamic excuse, for it is from the greatest of sins.
3. Pray Salat ut-Taraweeh and the night prayer during the nights of Ramadhan - especially on Layatul-Qadr - based on belief and truly seeking the reward of Allah, so that Allah may forgive youyour past sins.
4. Make sure that your food, your drink and your clothing are from halal means, in order that your actions be accepted, and your supplications answered. Beware of refraining from the halal while fasting and breakingyour fast with the haram.
5. Give food to some fasting people to gain a reward similar to theirs.
6. Perform your five prayers on time in congregation to gain the reward and Allah's protection.
7. Give a lot of charity for the best charity is that of Ramadhan.
8. Beware of spending your time without performing righteous deeds, for you will be responsible and reckoned for it and will be rewardedfor all you do during your time.
9. Perform `umrah in Ramadhan for `Umrah in Ramadhan is equal to Hajj.
10. Seek help for fasting during the day by eating the sahoor meal in the lastpart of the night before the appearance of Fajr.
11. Hasten breaking your fast after the sun has truly set in order to gain the love of Allah.
12. Perform ghusl before fajr if you need to purify yourself from the state of major impurity so that youare able to do acts of worship in a state of purityand cleanliness.
13. Seize the opportunity of being in Ramadhan and spend it with the good that has been revealed in it - by reciting the noble Qur'an and pondering and reflection of its meanings so that it be a proof for you with your Lord and anintercessor for you on the Day of Reckoning.
14. Preserve your tongue from lying, cursing, backbiting and slander for it decreases the reward of fasting.
15. Do not let fasting cause you cross your boundaries by getting upset due to the slightest of reasons. Rather, fating should be a cause of peacefulness and tranquility of your soul.
16. Upon completion of fasting, be in a state of taqwa of Allah the Most High, being aware of Allah watching you in secret andin public, in thankfulness for His favors, and steadfastness upon obedience of Allah by doing all what He has ordered and shunning all that He has prohibited.
17. Increase in remembrance of Allah, seeking of forgiveness, asking for Paradise and protection against the Fire,especially when fasting, while breaking the fast and during suhoor, for these actions are among greatest causes of attaining Allah's forgiveness.
18. Increase in supplication for yourself, your parents, your childrenand Muslims, for Allah has ordered making of supplications and has guaranteed acceptance.
19. Repent to Allah with a sincere repentance in all times by leaving sins, regretting those that you have done before and firmly deciding not to return to them in the future, for Allah accepts repentance of those who repent.
20. Fast six days of Shawwal, for whoever fasts Ramadhan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasts all the time.
21. Fast on the Day of `Arafah, the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, to attain success by being forgiven your sins ofthe last year and the coming year.
22. Fast on the day of `Aashuraa', the 10th of Muharram, along with the 9th, to attain success by being forgiven your sins ofthe past year.
23. Continue being in a state of iman and taqwa and perform righteous actions after the month of Ramadhan, until you die."And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (i.e. death)". [Qur'an 15:99]

Compare all this with our sad state, when we talk so much about establishing Islam, implementing the Qur'an, etc. and yet have such little contact with it, maybe not completing its recitation ever at all since childhood, or perhaps never! Hence we become unbalanced in our understanding of Islam, because there are ayat which we rarely or never hear or think about; we repeat only certain selected ayat over and over again; we lost the context of the verses, the overall flow, argument and balance of the Qur'an, all of which is beautiful & miraculous. Because of thisignorance we go astray from the Straight Path, split up into sects, lose the blessings of Allah...
"We took a covenant from those who said: we are Christians, but they forgot part of the message with which they had been reminded, so we ingrainedamongst them enmity andhatred until the Day of Judgment..." (Surah al-Ma'idah 5:14)
In Sahih Bukhari (6/521), there is an amazing piece of advice from the Prophet(may Allah bless him and grant him peace): "Recite the Qur'an as long as your hearts agree on it; if you disagree about it, stop reciting it (for the time being)." Studying the Qur'an should bring peopletogether!
In Surah al-Mu'minoon (23:53), there is mention of the people before us (in whose footsteps we wouldfollow), who broke up their Deen into sects (zuburan), each party rejoicing in what it had. One understanding of this, from the word zuburan meaning literally 'books', isthat each sect left the Book of Allah and concentrated solely on the books of its own sect, so"they split their deen up into books"!
The most twisted, ridiculous, shallow ideas, innovations and superstitions are propagated amongst Muslims when they are away from the Qur'an, because any little knowledge of the Qur'an would be enough to dispelthem.
Hence, O servant of Allah, leave aside secondary books and concentrate on studying the blessed Book of Allah in this blessed month (use a good translation/commentary if needed), for it is the sourceof all knowledge in other books, and keep away from wasting time, especially in futile discussions and argumentswhich lead nowhere, for that is a sure sign of being misguided, as the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, "Whenever a people went astray after they had been on guidance, they were given to argumentation (jadl)." (Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah - Sahih al-Jami' al-Saghir, no. 5633)
Finally, remember that theMessenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) will complain to Allah on the Day of Judgment that his people neglected the Qur'an (Surah al-Furqan 25:30). Neglect of the Qur'an is of different levels, as Ibn al-Qayyim writes:
Not reciting or listening to it;
Not studying and understanding it;
Not conveying its message;
Not judging by it in personal and communal matters, at all levels of society;
Not believing in it.

Ramadhan: the Month of Qur'an
The first part of this is based on an extract from Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali's Lata'if al-Ma'arif (pp. 179-182), quoted by Fahd bin Sulaiman in Kayf Nastafeed min Ramadan (pp. 48-50).
Ramadan has a special relationship with the Qur'an, of course:
"The month of Ramadan isthe one in which the Qur'an was sent down, a guidance for mankind, clear proofs for the guidance, the Criterion; so whoever amongst you witnesses this month, let him fast it." (cf. Surah al-Baqarah 2:185)
The word 'so' (fa) in this ayah leads to the following paraphrase of one aspect of its meaning:
"Fast this month because itis the one in which the Qur'an was sent down."
Ibn 'Abbas narrates that"the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was the most generous person, and he would be at his most generous in Ramadan because Jibril would come to him every night and he would rehearse the Qur'an with him." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Eng. trans. 6/486)
This hadith contains recommendation of the following:
*. Studying the Qur'an in Ramadan;
*. Coming together for this purpose;
*. Checking (one's memory/knowledge of) the Qur'an with someonewho has preserved it better;
*. Increasing recitation of the Qur'an in Ramadan;
*. That the night time is thebest time to recite, whenother preoccupations decrease and it is easier to concentrate, as in Surah al-Muzzammil 73:6.
Further, Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated from her father (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), who toldher that Jibril would rehearse the Qur'an with him (in Ramadan) once every year, and he did so twice in the year of his death. (Bukhari 6/485)
After mentioning the above aspects of the Sunnah, Ibn Rajab talks about the situation of the Salaf (the early Muslims) during Ramadan:
"... Some of the Salaf would complete reciting the whole Qur'an during the night prayer ofRamadan every 3 days, others every 7 days e.g. Qataadah, others in 10 days e.g. Abu Rajaa' al-Atardi. The Salaf would recite Qur'an in Ramadan in Prayer as well as outside it. Al-Aswad would finish the Qur'an every 2 nights in Ramadan; Ibrahim an-Nakh would do likewise in thelast 10 nights specifically, & every 3 nights during the rest of the month. Qataadah would regularlyfinish the Qur'an in 7 days, but in 3 days during Ramadan, when hewould study the Qur'an especially, and every night duringits last 10 days. Al-Zuhri would say when Ramadan began, 'It is recitation of the Qur'an and feeding of people.'
When Ramadan began, Imam Malik would cease narrating Hadith and sitting with the people of knowledge, and stick toreciting the Qur'an from its pages, while Sufyan al-Thawri would leave other acts of worship and stick to reciting the Qur'an. 'Aishah would recite fromthe pages of the Qur'an at the beginning of the day in Ramadan(i.e. after Dawn), until when the sun had risen, she would sleep. Zayd al-Yaami would bring copiesof the Qur'an when Ramadan began and gather his companions around him. ..."
Ibn Rajab later continues,
"The forbiddance of completing recitation of the Qur'an in less than 3 days applies to this being made a regular practice, but as for favoured times such as Ramadan, esp. the nights in which Laylat al-Qadr is sought, or favoured places such as Makkah for the visitor, it is recommended to increase reciting the Qur'an to avail the time and place. This is the view of Ahmad, Ishaq and other Imams, and the practice of others indicates this too."
The purpose here is not to discuss whether or not thelatter view is correct or not, since that is purely academic for most of us, aswe do not get anywhere near reciting the whole Qur'an in three days! However, the practice of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), his Companions, and those who followed their path, should be clear enough. As a further example, Bukhari (3/79) quotes from the noble Companion Zaid bin Thabitwho answered the question, "How much timewas there between the pre-dawn meal and the Dawn Prayer?" by saying,"Enough time to recite fiftyayat." 14 Gifts to Those Who Fast
At this stage I cannot find a better gift or greater masterpiece than to present to those who fast gifts from the Prophet of guidance sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam. They are those practical hadiths that have been mentioned in connection with rewards and blessings. Behold! They are the hadiths that lead to the doors of happiness and the paths ofgoodness in this world andthe Hereafter.
O you who fast! Record these hadiths and implement them:
1. The Prophet sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam said: "Whoever says at daybreak: 'There is no God save Allah alone, He has nopartner, to Him belongs the dominion and the praise and He has power over all things;'... ten good deeds will be written for him, ten misdeeds will be erased, and he will be elevated ten levels. He willbe protected from Satan until evening, and if he says it in the evening, he would have the same rewards until morning." (Ahmad, Abu Daud, Ibn Majah - sahih).
2. The Prophet sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam also said: "Whoever says in the morning or in the evening:'O Allah! You are my Lord. There is no God beside You. You created me and I am Your slave and I have taken a covenant to You and promised You what I am able to do. I seek refuge with You from the evil of what I have done, I acknowledge Your favour upon me and I acknowledge my sin. Forgive me because none forgives sins except You.' Ifa servant died during the day or night after having said this prayer, he will enter Paradise." (Ahmad, Abu Daud, Al Nisa'e, Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban, Al Hakim - sahih; Al Bukhari transmits another version of this hadith).
3. Again the Prophet sallallahu `alaihi wa sallamsaid: "Whoever says at morning or evening: 'Gloryand praise be Allah the Great' one hundred times, no one will come forward on the Day of Judgement with better than he; except if someone said thesame as him and added to it." (Muslim, Ahmad, Abu Daud, Al Tirmidhi).
4. "Whoever said: 'Glory and praise be to Allah the Great', a date tree will be planted for him in the Paradise." (Al Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibban, Al Hakim - sahih).
5. "Whoever says: "Glory and praise be to Allah" onehundred times in a single day his sins would be erased even if they were like the waves of the sea." (Bukhari and Muslim).
6. "Whoever implements ten verses of the Quran will not be included among the negligent. Whoever implements one hundred verses will be considered among the obedient. And, whoever implements one thousand verses will be among he extremely rich." (Abu Daud,Ibn Hibban - sahih).
7. "Whoever says in the evening: 'In the name of Allah with whose name there can be no harm in the earth or in the heavensand He is the Hearer the Knower,' three times, he will not be afflicted with a sudden calamity before morning. And whoever says it in the morning three times will not be afflicted with a sudden calamity before evening." (Abu Daud, Ibn Hibban, Al Hakim - sahih).
8. "Whoever says: 'I seek refuge with the perfect words of Allah from the evil that He created' three times in the evening will not be harmed by the bite of a serpent during that night." (Al Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibban, Al Hakim - sahih).
9. "Whoever says upon leaving his house: 'In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah, there is no movement and no power except with Allah', it would be said to him: 'Youhave been contented and you took precaution,' and Satan will turn away from him." (Al Tirmidhi, Abu Daud, Ibn Hibban, Ibn al Sunni - sahih).
10. "Whoever says when he hears the caller to prayer: 'And I bear witnessthat there is no God save Allah, He is alone and has no partner and I bear witness that Muhammad isHis servant and messenger. I am pleased with Allah as Lord, Muhammad as Prophet and Islam as religion,' all his sins will be forgiven." (Muslim and the other five).
11. "Whoever recites the Surah al Ikhlas ten times, Allah will build for him a house in the Paradise." (Ahmad - sahih).
12. "Whoever recites the Surah al Kahf on a Friday, alight will be created for him until the next Friday." (Al Hakim and Al Bayhaqi -sahih).
13. "Whoever recites Aayat al-Kursi (the Verse ofthe Throne) after every compulsory prayer will notbe forbidden entrance to Paradise." (Ibn Hibban and Al Nisa'e - sahih).
14. "Whoever recites Surah al Ikhlas it is as if he read one-third of the Quran." (Ahmad, Al Nisa'e, Al Tirmidhi - sahih).
This bouquet from Muhammad sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam we grantto all those who fast.

Important Lessons from Ramadhan
Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim (d.751H) - rahimahullaah - said:
"Allah also prescribed i’tikaaf for them, the objective being that the heart becomes fully preoccupied with Allah - the Most High - concentrated upon Him alone, and cut-off from being preoccupied with the creation. Rather, the heart is only engrossed with Allah - the Most Perfect - such that loving Him, remembering Him, and turning to Him takes the place of all the heart's anxieties and worries, so that he is able to overcome them. Thus all his concerns are for Allah, and his thoughts are all directed towards remembering Him and thinking of how to attain His Pleasure and what will cause nearness to him which leads him to feel contented with Allah instead of people. This, in turn prepares him for being at peace with Allah alone, on the day of loneliness in the grave, when there will be no one else to give comfort, nor anyone to grant solace, except Him. So this is the greater goal of I‘tikaaf ." [8]
[3]: ACQUIRING PATIENCE
Imaam Ahmad (d.241H) - rahimahullaah - said:
"Allah has mentioned sabr (patience) in over ninety places in His Book." [9]
The Prophet ( sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam ) said:
"The month of Patience, and the three days of every month, are times forfasting." [10]
Ibn ‘Abdul-Barr (d.464H) - rahimahullaah - said:
"What is meant by the month of Patience is the month of Ramadhan ... So fasting is called patience because it restrains the soul from eating, drinking, conjugal relations and sexual desires." [11]
He ( sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam ) said:
"O youths! Whoever amongst you is able to marry then let him do so; for it restrains the eyes and protects the private parts. But whoever is unable, then let him fast, because it will be a shield for him." [12]
So fasting is a means of learning self-restraint and patience. With patience weare able to strengthen our resolve to worship Allah alone, with sincerity, and also cope with life's ups and downs. So - for example - with patience we are able to perform ourPrayers calmly and correctly, without being hasty, and without merely pecking the ground several times! With patience we are able to restrain our souls from greed and stinginess and thus give part of our surplus wealth in Zakaah (obligatory charity). With patience we are able to subdue the soul's ill temperament, and thus endure the ordeal and hardships of Hajj , without losing tempers and behaving badly. Likewise, with patience we are able to stand firm and fight Jihaad against the disbeliveers, hypocrites and heretics - withstanding their constant onslaught, without wavering and buckling, without despairing or being complacent and without becoming hasty and impatient at the first signs of hardship. Allah - the Most High - said:
"O Prophet, urge the Believers to fight ... So if there are one hundred who are patient, they shall overcome two hundred; and if there be one thousand, they shall overcome two thousand,by the permission of Allah. And Allah is with the patient ones." [Soorah al-Anfaal 8:65-66].
Thus, without knowledge and patience, nothing remains, except zeal and uncontrolled emotions, shouts and hollow slogans,speech that does not strengthen, but rather weakens, and actions that do not build, but rather destroy! So in this month, we should strive to develop a firm resolve for doing acts of obedience, and to adorn ourselves with patience - having certainty in the saying of our Messenger ( sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam ): "And know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and case with hardship." [13]
[4]: CULTIVATING GOOD MANNERS
The Prophet ( sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam ) said:
"Whosoever does not abandon falsehood in speech and action, then Allah the Mighty and Majestic has no need that he should leave his food and drink." [14]
He ( sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam ) also said:
"Fasting is not merely abstaining from eating and drinking. Rather, it is also abstaining from ignorant and indecent speech. So if anyone abuses or behaves ignorantly with you, then say: I am fasting, I am fasting."
