With just days to go beforethe last date for submission of admission

Many colleges offer a number of extra-curricular activities
Can you count the number of times you have heard the words "Delhi
University" and "90 per cent" together? Most people in the age bracket
of 17 years and 19 years applying for admissions cannot.
These people also feel the school they just left behindwith its
super-competitive basketball games, even more competitive choir
competitions and umpteenother activities that once defined their whole
existence, is lost forever. They are wrong.
"We have the debating society, the English literary society, the fine
arts society, the hiking club, thephotography society, the wildlife
society and a history society among many others. All these societies
have a staff advisor and the remaining members are students," said St.
Stephen's College teacher Karen Gabrielle.
She added that their winter fest, their annual Shakespeare stage
production and the annual music competition was something the students
looked forward to every year.
"Throughout the year there is always something going on, there are no
restrictions for any studenton the number of activitiesbut there is so
much going on in each society that a student can manage a maximum of
four," she said.
St. Stephen's College has itsown admission procedure that is set apart
from the university. Its application form asks whether you have any
interest in a particular activity but thereis no separate ECA quota.
However, this can work to your advantage.
"Every student is welcome to any activity, provided there is some sort
of demonstrative skill and instinct in the student," said Ms.
Gabrielle.
Ramjas College is, however,most proud of its debating team.
"Our debating society has been winning constantly atalmost every
inter-college debate for the past five years. It is the most popular
activity among ourstudents," said Cultural Coordinator and Botany
teacher Madhumitha Banerjee, who added that they had an extra
curricular activities (ECA) quota that required concrete proof of past
achievements to be eligibleto apply in addition to passing the college
trials.
However, she said that there are plenty of opportunities for students
with no background in the any of the college's popular activities like
music, dramatics and debate among others.
" Some of our best students in the past who have won several
competitions for us, have been those who have never taken part in
anything in school," she said, adding that the college will be taking
auditions for several activities within a few weeks into the new term
and that the interested student must remain alert for dates and such.
Another college that does not have an ECA quota is the Shri Ram
College of Commerce which, they say,works to the advantage of the
student as everybody is at an equal footing and eligible to compete.
"The dramatic festival, 'Histrionica,' with its series of stage and
street plays is a big hit every year. The 'Shri Ram Debating Festival'
is another traditional event with Parliamentary, spot and conventional
debates. This goes back several years and usually happens around
February," said Cultural Co-ordinator and English professor S. K.
Choudhury.
"However, since we are a commerce college we havespecific events like
the annual college festival, 'cross-routes' which has a week-long
business conclave where industry leaders speak and there are business
quizzes and games." The college's commerce and economics societies are
the most coveted as are the foreign programmes that allow students to
travel to countries like Japan, Australia and the Netherlands to
compete.
Miranda House, with a hostof activities like debate, dramatics and
fine arts has an ECA quota and the last date of applying being June 30
by 1 p.m.
"The trials will be held on July 4 and 5, with admissions scheduled
for July 6 and 7," said PrincipalPrathiba Jolly.
ECA and sports forms are being sold in almost every college of the
university, save a few that do not have quotas.
Sale of forms dips
With only five more days to go, the sale of application forms at Delhi
University dipped to 5,000 on Wednesday. The last date for applying is
June 18.
"This is not counting onlinesales of 4,000 forms," said Dean of
Students' Welfare Prof. J.M. Khurana, adding that over all online
sales sofar had touched 22,000.
Interestingly, ever since the sale of application forms opened on June
4, more than one lakh copies have been sold for the 54,000 seats that
are available in the university.

Science & Tech: - - China's manned spacecraft in final preparations for mid-June launch

JIUQUAN, Gansu, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China's Shenzhou-9 manned
spacecraft is in final preparations for its launch in mid-June, paving
the way for China's first manned space docking mission, as well as the
country's first space mission featuring a femaleastronaut.
The mission will feature the country's first attempt at manual space
docking with the orbiting Tiangong-1 lab module, aswell as tasks to be
completed aboard the Tiangong-1 by astronauts from the Shenzhou-9,
space experts said at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest
China's Gobi desert.
China will launch the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft sometime in mid-June, a
spokesperson said last Saturday.
"The launch of the Shenzhou-9 is a highly influential event that marks
an important milestone for the development of China's space
technology," Cui Jijun, director of the Jiuquan Satellite Launch
Center, said on Wednesday.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the creationof China's manned
space program, which was officially initiated on Sept. 21, 1992. The
launch of the Shenzhou-9 spacecraftmarks the program's 10th launch and
the country's fourth manned spaceflight.
China aims to build a space station around 2020based on the space
rendezvous and docking technology that is currently being tested.
Several components will be sent into space separately before being
assembled into a space station through a variety of docking
procedures.
"In the Russian and USA space programs, the most serious docking
problems have been caused by automatic docking systems, more so than
by manual docking," said Pat Norris, chairman of the Royal
Aeronautical Society Space Group.
"China has taken the prudent course of verifying new space technology
in robotic flights before applying it to human space missions,"he
said, referring to last November's unmanned Shenzhou-8 mission to test
docking technology, as well as four unmanned missions that took place
before the launch of the Shenzhou-5, which took astronaut Yang Liwei
into space in 2003 and orbited Earth 14 times.
"China is only the third nation to launch humans into space, which is
a very impressive achievement," said Norris, who is also a member of
the Executive Committee of the UK Parliamentary Space Committee.
FULL PREPARATIONS
The Command Hall of the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center is in "ready
to launch" status, according to launch center commander Wang Jun, who
will be responsible for turning the ignition key during the actual
launch.
A full-system drill was held on Tuesday, with all systems relevant to
the mission found to be in full operating condition, Cui said.
He added that a sound emergency plan is in placeand comprehensive
escapedrills have been conductedto ensure the safety of thethree
astronauts aboard.
The target module Tiangong-1 was brought down to docking orbit in
early June and is ready for docking attempts by the Shenzhou-9 and
Shenzhou-10 spacecraft, according to a spokesperson from China'smanned
space program.
The three astronauts havebeen "strictly quarantined" so as to
guarantee their physical and psychological condition, according to Lu
Jinrong, chief engineer at the Jiuquan center.
"We cannot see them or get in touch with them. Allwe can do is provide
support for their life and work," Lu said.
Although the construction of another launch center in southern China's
island province of Hainan is well under way, the Jiuquan center will
continue to be used to send manned spacecraft into space, while heavy
components to be used to build the space station will be launched at
the Hainan center, Lu said, adding that the Jiuquan center will
"constantly adapt to new missions."
HIGH TEMPS POSE THREAT
"This launch marks the first time for a Chinese spacecraft to be
launched during the hot summer weather," Cui said.
The previous nine launches -- from the launch of the Shenzhou-1 to the
Tiangong-1 -- took place in spring, autumn or winter, he said.
For the Shenzhou-9 mission, high temperatures will pose a threat to
the craft, as the ship's propellant can vaporize in excessively high
temperatures. Efforts have been made to cool the propellant to around
15 degrees Celsius, "the best temperature before launch," Cui said.
"Summer is a good choice for the launch time," he said, as
thunderstorms seldom occur near Jiuquanduring the summer. Springand
winter bring sandstorms and extremelylow temperatures to the area,
respectively.

Suicide car bomb hits bus station near Damascus, 14 injured/ - 2012-06-14 10:41:55 GMT 2012-06-14 18:41:55(Beijing Time) Xinhua English

DAMASCUS, June 14 (Xinhua) -- A suicide car bomb tore through a bus station early Thursday in asuburban area of the Syrian capital Damascus, leaving 14 people injured and a nearby security complex damaged, witnesses and the state-run SANA news agency said.
A suicide bomber driving an explosive-laden van tried to storm the Saida Zainab bus garage near Damascus at about 5:50 a.m. local time (0250 GMT),prompting guards at the bus station to open fire to stop him, witnesses told Xinhua.
The bomber managed to reach the bottom of the garage and detonate the bomb, witnesses said.
A security complex overlooking the garage was damaged, along with a nearby hospital and a Shiite shrine.
The blast left a deep craterat the scene, as well as twisted debris and a dozen of burned cars. Windows of some nearby buildings and shops were also shattered.
A local resident told Xinhua that he, along withhis family, was awaken by a "loud sound" that rattledhis house's windows and doors. "My kids are still crying in fear," he said.
A team of UN observers headed to the scene and examined the blast site.
Meanwhile, another car bomb ripped through a military checkpoint in the northwestern province of Idlib, injuring six army men, including an officer.
Thursday's bombings are the latest in a series of explosions that have rocked the unrest-torn country during the 16-month-old unrest.
The Syrian government blames "foreign-backed terrorists" of being behindthe daily violence.

Going to Allah when we need Him

Do we think we can go to Allah only when we "need"Him?
I'm not saying that it's wrong. I'm saying that it's impossible.
We need Allah every hour, every day. Every heartbeat,every breath,
every bite of food, every ray of sunshine.We need Him when we arepoor
and sick, and when we're rich and robust. We need Him when we're
starving in the gutter, or cruising on top of the world. We depend on
Allahmore than a newborn babydepends on its mother, even when we don't
see it.
Our failure to see this reality does not change thefact that it is
true. We can achieve nothing without Allah. I write this article only
by His will. You get out of bed, pour your cereal, hug your children,
go to work, run that 5K race, and breathe, all by means of the gifts
He has given.
When we're doing well, and everything is butter, that's the time to
turn to Allah even more, with gratitude and praise. If we do that,
then when we're having hard times He'll be there for us, He'll rescue
us and lift us up, even if we don't ask.
This not my idea. I did not make this up. The Messenger of Allah (sws)
said, "Remember Allah during times of ease and He will remember you
during times of difficulty." (Tirmidhi)
Remembrance of Allah is not only a matter of prayer. It is also
kindness to others. If I have an excess of energy, I need to use that
to help someone who is ill, weak, depressed,or lost. If I have been
blessed with wealth, intelligence, knowledge, or talent, then I need
to use that to bring someone relief.
I need Allah , I know that. I feel it.
We need Allah with every rotation of the earth. So yes, go to Allah
when you need Him – at every moment in time.

1] Dua Against Debt

Being in debt is a killer. It consumes us with stress, and eats away
at our happiness and sense of security. It destroys marriages, and if
the debt is between family or friends then it can ruin those
relationships. In some countries, inability topay your debt can even
you put in prison.
I feel obligated to mention that part of the reason so many people are
carrying so much debt is our addiction to the material lifestyle. We
are bombarded with messagesand advertisements telling us we need to
buy this andown that. It gets to the point where we measure our status
in life (and that of others) by what we own, or worse, by how much we
spend. If we spend a huge sum of money on a lavish wedding, then we
are "honored" in society. If not,we feel shamed. Since our incomes do
not match our desires, we go into debt.
This thinking and lifestyle is completely contrary to what Islam
teaches us, and to the example set by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and
the Sahabah (may Allah be pleased withthem all). Even when they became
rulers of the world,they continued to live simple and humble
lifestyles, because they understood what really matters in life.
So the first step for us is to readjust our priorities, and to realize
that what matters is our relationship with Allah. Beyond that, the
important things in life are our family relationships– loving our
spouses and children and spending timewith them, worshiping with them,
supporting them. Then our friendships,and doing some good in the
world, creating something meaningful, andbeing an agent of compassion
in the lives of those around you.
Dua Against Debt
If you have done whatever you can to avoid debt, and still you find
yourself burdened with debts, try this dua from Fortress of the
Muslim. Repeat it manytimes every day:
Dua for relief from debt, inArabic
Allaahummak-finee bihalaalika 'an haraamika wa 'aghninee bifadhlika
'amman siwaaka.
"O Allah, suffice me with what You have allowed instead of what You
have forbidden , and make me independent of all others besides You."
(Reference: At-Tirmithi 5/560. See also Al-Albani, Sahih At-Tirmithi 3/180.)
This dua against debt is really brilliant, because the dua contains
within itself the solution to the problem. "Suffice me with what you
have allowed." Inother words, let the halal be enough for me. Don't
letme get myself into debt because of haram mortgage loans or
excessive material desire, or out-of-control consumerspending. Let me
be satisfied with a simple, halal life, so that I don't getinto debt.
If you repeat this often enough it becomes a part of your thinking and
awareness, and you modifyyour own behavior, which leads to: "make me
independent of all others besides You." You become your own man or
woman, not owing money to anyone, independent, relying only on Allah.
I'm not saying the dua is just an affirmation, I'm saying it works on
both levels, as an affirmation and as a prayer to Allah to help you
achieve that affirmation. It's a subtle and amazing dua.
Three Excellent Dua's Against Debt:
(note that #2 is the sameas the one above)
1) "Oh Allah, I take refugein You…"
Narrated by Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (ra):
One day the Messenger of Allah (saw) entered the mosque. He saw there
a man from the Ansar (a resident of Madinah) called Abu Umamah and
said to him: "What is the matter that I am seeing you sittingin the
mosque when there is no time of prayer?" Abu Umamah said: "I am
entangled in sorrow and debts." The Prophet Muhammad (ra ) replied:
"Shall I not teach you words by which, when you say them, Allah will
remove your sorrow, and settle your debts?" Abu Umamah said: "Yes,
Messenger of Allah." The Prophet Muhammad (ra ) said: "Say in the
morning and evening: Allahumma inni 'auzu bika min alhamma wal 'huzn,
wal 'ajzi wal kasali wal bukhli wal jubn, wa dhala'iddini wa
'galabatir rajaal." (See here for the arabic text).
'O Allah, I take refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and
laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts and from
being overpowered by men.'
Abu Umamah said: "When Idid that Allah removed my distress and settled

How to become a Muslim

If anyone has a real desire to be a Muslim and has fullconviction and
strong belief that Islam is the true religion ordained by Allah for
all human-beings,then, one should pronounce the " Shahada ",the
testimony of faith, without further delay . The Holy Qur'an is
explicit on this regard as Allah states:
"The Religion in the sight of Allah is Islam." (Qur'an 3:19 )
In another verse of the Holy Qur'an, Allah states:
"If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (Submission to Allah),
Never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter he will be in
the ranks of those who have lost." (Qur'an 3:85 )
If a person does not pronounce the Shahada and enter Islaam, we cannot
say that he is a Muslim, even if he admiredIslaam and recognized that
it the best religion, a great religion, and so on. Abu Taalib, the
uncle of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) died
a kaafir (non-Muslim), and Allaah forbade His Prophet to pray for
forgiveness for him, even though he used to defend the Prophet (peace
and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said in his poems: "I do know
that the religion of Muhammad is better than all other religions of
mankind; were it not for fear of blame or slander, you would find me
accepting it completely."

Do Fish Oil Supplements Protect Your Heart?

Many people take fish oil supplements because someevidence suggests
that the omega-3 fatty acids they contain help protect against
cardiovascular disease (CVD) and sudden death caused by heart rhythm
abnormalities. But there is conflicting evidence from several research
studies and, in theend, these supplements areprobably not helpful.
Results of a New Study
The fatty acids thought to help protect against CVD are called
eicosapentaenoicacid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). In
reviewing this ongoing issue, the latest results are from a
meta-analysis published recently in Archives of Internal Medicine.
This report examined 14 research trials that enrolled20,485 patients.
These patients, all with known aCVD, took either a placeboor fish oil
supplements. Theaverage dose was 1.7 gram/day of EPA and DHA. The
results showed that supplementation did not reduce the risk of CVD
events, sudden cardiac death, heart attacks, strokeand transient
ischemic events, or deaths from all causes. The authors concluded that
fish oil supplements were not beneficial in secondary prevention
(preventative measures used in people with a prior history of CVD.)
Results of Previous Studies Differ
One reason for the popularity of fish oil supplementation was the 1999
report of a large Italian study which followed people who took fish
oil supplements for a period of 3.5 years, startingwithin 3 months
after a heart attack. Those taking the supplements significanty
lowered their risk for overall death as well as a combination of CVD
outcomes, compared to study participants who did not take fish oil
after a heart attack. While that sounded promising, two other research
trials looking at secondary prevention, published in 2010, found
different results, as did the meta-analysis described above. These
trials found that fish oil supplements offered no protection against
CVD events. What could be the reason?
There are a couple of possible explanations for the different results
of the latest studies:
1) accurate determination of the benefits of preventive measures
requires a longer follow-upthan employed in any of these studies; and,
2) any possible benefits of fish oil supplements were not apparent in
participants in the later studies because their CVD risk was reduced
by taking the new medications to control cholesterol levels and blood
pressure.
In addition, an earlier meta-analysis also had found no CVD benefits
of fish oil supplements in people with no prior history of CVD (i.e.,
primary prevention).
Should you continue to take fish oil supplements?
I think not, but there does remain the possibility that fish oils
provide some protection against CVD. Thecontroversy may be resolved by
results of the ongoing vitamin D and omega-3 trial that will enroll
20,000 men older than 50 and women older than 55.
Omega-3s are Essential in Your Diet
Despite the disappointing research results around fishoil, omega-3
fatty acids arean essential dietary component since humans can't make
these fats.
If you decide to continue to take fish oil supplements, you'll want to
understand that the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA comprise only
about 20 percent of most supplements. Meanwhile, whether you have CVD
or not, you should eat at leasttwo servings of marine fishweekly
because they not only contain omega-3 fattyacids but may also replace
your intake of less healthy red meat.
One final point about fish oil—there is even less evidence to support
other beneficial claims for these supplements, for example to improve
memory and joint pains of rheumatoid arthritis. However, strong
evidence does show that large doses of fish oil supplements
effectively lower blood triglycerides (but do not raise HDL
cholesterol or lower LDL cholesterol levels).

American research.

Researchers at the University of Michigan Health System and Duke
University conducted an analysis that found male doctors earn
about$12,000 more a year thanfemale physicians. The findings were
published Wednesday in the Journalof the American Medical Association.
"The gender pay disparitywe found in this highly talented and select
groupof physicians was sobering," Reshma Jagsi, associate professor of
radiation oncology at the University of Michigan Medical School and
lead author of the study said in a press release .
The researchers surveyed about 800 doctors who had received
competitive grants early in their careers from the U.S. National
Institutes of Health. Doing, allowing researchers to examine a pool of
similarly motivated and talented physicians.
The results showed that, on average, male doctors earned about
$200,400 a year, while female physicians earned about$167,600. Some of
the differences are explained by differences in medical specialty,
with men goinginto fields that traditionally pay more. For instance,
studies show men are more likely to choose cardiology, which typically
pays high amounts, while women are more likely to opt for the
less-lucrative pediatrics. When those differences were factored in,
the overall pay gap between men and women was about$12,000, the
researchers said.
Over a 30-year career, that difference would addup to about $360,000.
Why the difference?
The Associated Press spoke to two women in the medical field who
believe a big factor is the fact men are simply better at
self-promotion and pushing for more money.
"Male faculty members are willing to negotiate more aggressively. It
maybe social and cultural. It seems to be fairly deep-rooted," JoAnn
Manson, chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital,
told the Associated Press.
Of course, the issue isn't just limited to the medical profession. Pay
inequality has been the subject of debate for years, and could become
an issue in the 2012 U.S. presidential election. One of the biggest
reasons researchers point to in the gender pay-inequality gap is the
fact many women interrupt their careers to have children.
Is there any solution to the persistent problem of pay inequality
between men and women?

Waraqah ibn Nawfal, the cousin of Khadijah (ra) was a Christian and a

your people drive you out!" The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu `alayhi
wa sallam) said, "Will they drive me out?" He said,"Yes, no man has
brought anything similar to what you have brought without being
treated with hostility. If I am still alive on that day, I will give
you my strong support."

Al Qur'an Ayath Explanation: - -

"And We certainly sent Moses with Our signs, [saying], "Bring out your
people from the darknesses into the light and remind them of the days
of Allah." Indeed in that are signs for every patient and grateful
one." [Ibrahim: 5]
- Reminding people of the days of Allah `azza wa jall, and connecting
them to Him is one of the greatest things a person or a da'ee can do
for a person. Waffaqanallahu wa iyyakum (may Allah grant us success,
ameen).

Be aware of every hour and how it passes and onlyspend it in the best
possible way; do not neglect yourself, but keep accustomed to the
noblest and best of actions, and send to your grave that which will
please you when you arrive to it.

Keep Your Head Up and Smile

Keep your head up, smile, and look to the future. You have much yet to
do in thislife. Ask Allah for guidance, then do what your heart tells
you, speak the words that you've always held back, and be yourself.
Don't let the past freeze you in place, and don't punish yourself for
things you cannot change. Everything you've experienced: the happy
times, loneliness, laughter and tears, all have meaning, and have all
gone into making you whoyou are. If you have any wisdom or insight, it
is probably a result of hardship you've experienced in the past.

Walking This Path Together

I'm just a guy who has lived an unorthodox life. I have been alone and
chained. I have seen frightening violence. I havealso wandered the
mountain trails in Central America, camped in the snows of the
Sierras, and laid on my back in the Sahara, watching a meteor shower
decorate the sky. I have witnessed the birth ofmy child, and received
great gifts. I have been so blessed by Allah, so cared for, as He

Walking speed is a reliable marker for longevity, according to a
University ofPittsburgh analysis of nine large studies, reported in a
January 2011 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association.
The 36,000 subjects were all over age 65. In fact, predicting survival
based on walking speed proved to be as accurate as using age, sex,
chronic conditions, smoking, body mass index, hospitalizations, and
other common markers. It's especially accurate for those over age 75.
The average speed was 3 feet per second (about twomiles an hour).
Those who walked slower than 2 feet per second (1.36 miles per hour)
had an increased riskof dying. Those who walked faster than 3.3 feet
per second (2.25 miles per hour) or faster survived longer than would
be predicted simply by age or gender.
A 2006 report in JAMA found that among adults ages 70 to 79, those who
couldn't walk a quarter mile were less likely to be alive six years
later. They were also more likely to suffer illness and disability
before death. An earlier study of men ages 71 to 93found that those
who could walk two miles a dayhad half the risk of heart attack of
those who could walk only a quarter mile orless.
Simply walking faster or farther doesn't make you healthier -- in
fact, pushingit could make you vulnerable to injury. Rather, each body
seems tofind a natural walking speed based on its overall condition.
If it's slow, it's usually because of underlying health issues that
are cutting longevity.

sides is what gives support to the lower back, he says.
If someone is walking without much swing to thearm, it's a red flag
that the spine isn't being supportedas well as it could be, because of

Sometimes experts don't have to see you walk -- they can hear you
coming down the hall. A condition called "foot slap" or "drop foot" is
when your foot literally slaps the ground as you walk. "It's caused
bymuscle weakness of the anterior tibial muscle or the peroneal
muscles," sayspodiatrist Jane E. Andersen,who has a practice in Chapel
Hill, North Carolina, and is a past president of the American
Association for Women Podiatrists.
A healthy stride starts witha heel strike, then the foot slowly lowers
to the ground, then it lifts from the toe and slings back to your
heel. But with drop foot, muscle control is lost and the foot can't
return slowly to the ground. Instead, it "slaps" the ground.
"This could be a sign of a stroke or other neuromuscular event, or
ofcompression of a nerve," Andersen says. A ruptured disk in the back
is a common cause, since it cancompress a nerve that travels down the
leg. A rare cause of drop foot is simply crossing your legs, Andersen
says, if the common peroneal nerve is disrupted from the pressure.

created for you spouses from among yourselves, in order to have
tranquility and contentment with each other, and He placed in your
hearts love and care towards your spouses.In this, there are
sufficient proofs for people who think." (Surah Rum, Verse:21)
By marriage, husband and wife try to protect their chastity, to love
each other,have mercy on each other, help each other to get closer to
Allah, try to have children to grow the Muslim Ummah and raise them to
become true servants of Allah

A Witness to Your Life

When seeking a marriage partner, remember, a husband or wife is not
just some pretty face that you get to admire or possess, or show off
to your friends.This person is not a checkbook, a status symbol, a
servant, or a household maid. This is notsomeone that you'll see fora
few minutes each day after work, and take to dinner parties.
You could marry someone only for looks or status then find yourself
miserable, harped on, arguing every day, lonely within your marriage,
or abused. All you rich and attractive people don't take offense – you
might be perfectly lovely and sweet – I'm just saying thatappearance,
wealth and lineage are no guarantee of happiness, and if you focus on
those factors to the exclusion of the soul, then you will likely find
yourself mismatched, brokenhearted and forlorn.
A spouse is someone you abide with for the rest of your life, even
when you are wrinkled and bent. Someone to hold you when you're sad,
to support you when you're tired, to cool your foreheadwhen you're

Dua’ for one who is sick

7. - "Allah Who is in heaven"
It was narrated that Abul-Darda (may Allaah bepleasedwith him) said: I
heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings ofAllaah be upon
him) say: "Whoever among you suffers some sickness, orhis brother
suffers some sickness, let him say: 'Our Lord Allah Who is in heaven,
hallowed be Your name, Your will is done in heaven and on earth; as
Your mercy is inheaven, bestow it upon the earth. Forgive us our sins.
You are the Lord of the good. Send down Your mercy and healing upon
this pain' ; and he will be healed."
- Narrated by Abu Dawood(3892); classed as saheeh by al-Haakim in
al-Mustadrak (4/243) and as hasan by IbnTaymiyah in Majmoo al-Fataawa
(3/139).7
It was narrated from Ibn Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) that
theProphet (pbuh) said: "The one who visits a sick person who is not
dying,and says seven times in his presence, 'I ask Allah the Almighty,
the Lord ofthe Mighty Throne, to heal you' , Allah will heal him from
that sickness."
- Narrated byAbu Dawood (3106); classed as saheeh by al-Nawawi in
al-Adhkaar (p.180) and by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.
While reciting these ruqyahs over someone, forexample your sick child,
you should wipe your hand over his face, chest and stomach, as the
Prophet (pbuh) used to do,and you should sit near your child's head so
that you will be breathing overhim as you recite the page. There is
nothing wrong with blowing lightly onto his face with alittle saliva
while doing that.
Ibn al-Qayyim said: "The ruqyah comes from the heart and mouth of the
one who is reciting ruqyah, so if it is accompanied with some of his
saliva and breath, that will have a stronger effect." - Zaad al-Ma aad
(4/164).
Over and above all that there must be sincerity towards Allah in the
du'aa, and sincere turning to Him and humility before Him, and one
should seek out the times when prayers are answered, for when a person
raises his hand to Allah in du'aa, Allah is reluctant that the person
should remain empty-handed. Do not be hasty in seeking a response, for
Allah may delay the answer for a reason that is known to Him, so you
should be patient and have certain faith. Remember that the Prophet
(pbuh) said: "Call upon Allah when you arecertain of receiving a
response, and rememberthat Allah does not answer a du'aa that comes
from a heedless heart."

Tuhfat al-Shaakireen (68) and byal-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah

1Dua’ for one who is sick

What dua' can one say for a person who is sick? For example, a parent
for a sick child? Or for any family member or friend who is ill? Or
even a dua' for a sick person to say for himself?
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has taught us
things in such cases in which there is healing and a lessening of
sickness, as well as reward. That is part of Allah s mercy towards
this blessed ummah and the Prophet's care for it. He is the one whom
Allah described as (interpretation of the meaning):
Verily, there has come unto you a Messenger (Muhammad saws) from
amongst yourselves. It grieves him that you should receive any
injuryor difficulty. He is anxious over you; for thebelievers (he is)
full of pity, kind, and merciful. [al-Tawbah 9:128]
Among the things that he taught us are the following:
1 - Reciting al-Faatihah
It was narrated from Abu Sa eed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with
him)that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah beupon him)
described Soorat al-Faatihah as a ruqyah, and he approved of the
Sahaabi who recitedit as a ruqyah for the one who had been stung by a
scorpion.
- Al-Bukhaari (2156) and Muslim (2201).
Ibn al-Qayyim said about reciting Soorat al-Faatihah:
"There was a time when I fell sick in Makkah, and I could not find a
doctor or any medicine, so I treated myself by reciting it. I would
take some Zamzamwater and recite it over it several times, then drink
it. I recovered fully by these means, then I beganto do that whenever
I felt alot of pain, and I benefited greatly from it."

2. "Lord of the Magnificent Throne"
The following dua' is givenin "Fortress of the Muslim",to be recited
for one who is ill:
Dua for sickness and ill health
Transliteration: 'As'alullaahal-'Adheema Rabbal-'Arshil-'Adheemi 'an
yashfiyaka.
Meaning: I ask Almighty Allah , Lord of the Magnificent Throne, to
make you well. (Recite seven times in Arabic)
Reference: At-Tirmithi, AbuDawud. See also Al-Albani, Sahih
At-Tirmithi 2/210 and Sahihul-Jami' As-Saghir 5/180.
3 - "You are the Healer"
It was narrated from Aa'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that
when any of us fell sick, the Messenger of Allah (peaceand blessings
of Allah be upon him) would wipe him with his right hand then say: "
Adhhib il-ba's, Rabbi l-naas washfi anta al-Shaafi laa shifaa ailla
shifaa uka shifaa an laa yughaadir saqaman. (Remove the harm, O Lord
of humankind and heal him, for You are the Healer and there is no
healing except Your healing, with a healing which does not leave any
disease behind)."
Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5675) and Muslim (2191).
4 - Al Mu'awidhatayn (Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Naas)
It was narrated that Aa'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
"If one of his family fell sick, the Messenger of Allah (peace and
blessings of Allah be upon him) would blow over him and recite
al-Mu'awwidhaat. When he fell sick with his final illness, I started
to blow over him and wipe him with his own hand, because it was more
blessed than my hand."
Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5735) and Muslim (2192).
5 - Bismillah and dua'
It was narrated from Uthmaan ibn Abi l- Aas al-Thaqafi that he
complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be
upon him) about some pain that he had felt in his body since he became
Muslim. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him) said to him: "Put your hand on the part of your body that hurts
and say: 'Bismillaah' (in the nameof Allah) three times, then say
seven times: 'I seek refuge in Allah and His Power from the evil of
what I find and I fear.'"
- Narrated by Muslim (2202).
6 - "In the Name of Allah I perform ruqyah"
It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with
him)that Jibreel came to the Prophet (pbuh) and said:"O Muhammad, are
you sick?" He said: "Yes." He said: "In the name of AllahI perform
ruqyah foryou, from everything that is harming you, from the evilof
every soul or envious eye may Allah heal you, in the name of Allah I
perform ruqyah for you."
- Narrated by Muslim (2186).

The Supplication andAl-Qadar

Here there occurs a very popular question and it is:
If the thing that is being supplicated for is already decreed for the
servant, then there is no doubt that it is going to come to pass for
him, regardless of whether he supplicates forit or not. And if it has
not been decreed for him, then it will not come to pass, regardless of
whether he asks Allaah forit or not.
There is one group that perceives this question to be valid and so
they have abandoned the supplication and are of theview that there is
no benefit in doing it. These people, along with their excessive
ignorance and misguidance are in clear contradiction, for if we were
to follow their opinion, it would require us to reject all the
different means for attaining something (desired).
So it can be said to one of them:
If satisfying your appetite and quenching your thirst were already
decreed for you, then there is no doubt that they are going to come to
pass, whether you eat and drink or you don't. And if they were
notdecreed for you, they will not come to pass, whetheryou eat and
drink or you don't.
And likewise, if a child were decreed for you, then you will
definitely receive it, whether you have sexual intercourse with your
wife or you don't. And if that was not decreed for you, then it will
not come to pass. Thus there is no need for marrying, having sexual
relations and so on and so forth.
Who says such a statement? Is it one possessing common sense or a
beast? Rather, even the animal has a natural inclination (fitrah)
towardsseeking the means of attaining something (desired), which (for
example) will give it sustenance and livelihood.So the animals have
more common sense and possess more understanding than these types of
people who are like cattle – nay, far worse!
Some of them try to be clever and say:
Preoccupying oneself withsupplication falls into the realm of worship
solely – Allaah will reward the onesupplicating, without that having
an effect on what he is asking for in any way. According to this type
of person, there is no difference between supplicating and
refrainingfrom supplicating by heartand tongue, with regard to that
having an effect onattaining what is being asked for. And according to
them, the relation of the supplication to it (what is being asked for)
islike its relation with silence. There is no difference between them.
Another group, more slick than this one says:
Rather, the supplication is a sign, which Allaah displays as a symbol
that amatter has been carried out. So when Allaah grantshis servant
the ability to supplicate, it is a sign and a symbol that the matter
he was requesting has been carried out. This is just as if one were to
see afrigid black cloud during the winter season. It is a sign and an
implicationthat it will rain.
They say: Similarly is enacting good deeds with respect to reward, and
committing disbelief and sins with respect to punishment – they are
pure signs for the occurrence of (either) reward or punishment – not
means (by which the result will be attained).
Likewise, according to them, with the matters of breaking, kindling
and destroying – none of thesethings serves as a means for the
occurrence (result) of a wreck, fire and death, respectively. Nor is
there any connection between those things and what results from them,
other than the fact that they are normally paired together – not that
one is caused due to the means of the other!
They have contradicted perceptual observation and common sense with
this opinion, as well as revelation and fitrah (natural inclination),
not tomention all of the other intellectual groups. Rather,those with
intellects laughat them!
The correct view: There is a third category, apart from those
mentioned by the questioner. And it is that the decreed result is
preordained along with itsproper means, which lead to its occurrence.
One of these means is the supplication. It is not preordained just
like that, without any means (leading to its occurrence), rather it is
preordained along with its proper means (which will ensure its
occurrence). So when a person comes across the means, the decreed
matterwill come to pass. And if he does not come across those means,
the decreed matter is denied.
So satisfying one's appetite and quenching one's thirst are
preordained with (the means of) eating and drinking. Children are
preordained with (the means of) sexual intercourse. Harvesting crops
is preordained with (the means of) planting and, the withdrawal of
thesoul from an animal is decreed with slaughter. Likewise, entrance
into Paradise is preordained with (good) deeds,

Modern History of India

Modern History of India generally refers to the period of Colonial
rule and domination on India. The advent of the British on theIndian
soil at around 17th century can roughly be delineated as the beginning
of the Modern Age in Indian history. For two centuries, the British
exercised complete subordination over the Indian landmass till the
blazing inferno of the freedom fighters forced their departure. The
two hundred years of their rule not only had an impact in the sphere
of politics and economy, but also was instrumental in bringing about
considerable changes in the realm of education, society and culture.
Advent of British Era
The British, however, were not the first of the foreign powers to set
their foot on the Indian soil. In the closing years of the 15th
century, the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama had reached Calicut in
South India. Since then, theFrench, the Dutch and subsequently the
British colonisers made their forayinto India, the land of immense
wealth and riches. By the 18th Century,the British Empire in India had
already established their supremacy. The enormous Indian Territory was
characterised by a comprehensive lack of unity amongst the independent
rulers, an aspect of which the British took complete advantage. It was
further escalated by the fall of the Mughals in 1739 and the constant
strife between the various ruling dynasties and the power monger
nobles in the various Indian provinces who wanted to establish their
supremacy independently. Some of themost powerful ruling clans in
India during this period were the Marathas, Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan
of Mysore , the Nawabs of Bengal and the Sikhs under the leadership of
Ranjit Singh. The British encouraged rampant commercial exploitation
to exercise their dominance and soon the British East India Company `s
policy of annexation resulted in securing the influence of the British
Empire as the supreme authority. The Governor-Generals and Viceroys
during this time unleashed unscrupulous means to implement their
authority. The imposition of the Dewani (1765), the practice of
Private trade by the East India Company, introduction of the Permanent
Settlement (1793) by Lord Cornwallis were some of the reforms that the
British introduced during their tenure, addingto the woes of the
colonised.
Influence of British
While the British left no stone unturned to ascertain their influence
over the Indian population,they were also prominently involved in
bringing about certain changes in the field of education, culture, as
well as society. This was primarily a form of their cultural
imperialistic designs. Macaulay, an eminent member of the
Governor-General`s Council,in his Minute (1835), despised the
scriptures andwealth of knowledge that India treasured and called for
the introduction of English education which heconsidered to be
superior and necessary to educate the barbaric Indians. However, noted
educationists like Raja RamMohan Roy and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar
were instrumental in imbibing the intellectual trends of Western
Education with those of the ancient Indian scriptures and literary
works. It was towards the end of the 18th and the beginning of the
19th century, that some of the premier educational institutions like
the Hindu College or the Presidency College were established in
Bengal. This era is often referred to as the Bengal Renaissance . The
spread of education though was masked by the spread of Christian
religious doctrineswith the Christian missionaries being deputedthe
task of extending education.
The cause of women`s education was propagated by Vidyasagar, who set
up around thirty schools for women in Bengal. Social reformers like
Raja Ram Mohan Roy played a key role in the abolition of the Sati
(1829) or the custom of women surrendering their lives in the funeral
pyres of their husbands. In 1856, the Widow Remarriage Act was
sanctioned by the British Government under the patronage of Ishwar
Chandra Vidyasagar.
The British were also instrumental in the establishment of the
IndianRailways which began functioning in 1853. This too was a means
of extending their imperialistic designs as the British believed that
the railways would not only make communication swifter, but at the
same time they would escalate the swift movement of troops which had
become extremely necessary to subjugate the uprisings and rebellions
that recurrently spurted againsttheir domination.

Ancient History of India

Ancient history of India is hugely magnificent, affluent and diverse.
The rich tradition of verbal account makes India the subcontinent
whose history is deep buried in the antiquities of 5000 years. Though,
nothing wasrecorded about the ancientperiod, yet historians traced

, India. Neolithic culture also emerged in South Asia, the Mehrgarh
findings in present day Balochistan, Pakistan and in the Gulf of
Khambat in India are foundand the late Neolithic cultures augmented in
the Indus Valley region between 6000 and 2000 BCE and in southern
India between 2800 and 1200 BCE.

Bronze Age in India startedwith the Indus Valley Civilization . This
civilizationis known by the name of the two of its great cities -
Harappan and Mohenjodaro and points out the Indus Valley Civilization
as one of the oldest known civilizations of ancient India beside the
three earliest urban civilizations along with Mesopotamia and Ancient
Egypt. According to the Ancient History of India, Bronze Age is the
timeline when the human being started using bronze for the purpose of
tool making. This age began in India around 3300 BCE. Theremains of
the great civilisation are found in modern day India, in the cities of
Gujarat , Haryana and Rajasthan as well as in Pakistan, Sindh and

Aryans in India
History in India is a crossroads of cultures from China to Europe. The
first group to invade India was the Aryans , who came out of the north
in about 1500 BC. The Aryans brought with them strong cultural
traditions that, miraculously, still remain inforce today. It was the
Aryans who migrated from the Northwest into the Indian subcontinent
and settled in the Saptasindhu region whilst adapting the existing
Indian culture. It was the 2nd century BC and in the ancient history
of India the period is known as the Vedic civilisation. Aryans lived
in tribes and they spoke Sanskrit language , which was a part of
Indo-European group of languages. Aryans started to intermingle with
the locals.
Ancient Dynasties of India
History of ancient India during this time witnessed therise of major
kingdoms known as the Mahajanapadas. There are sixteen Mahajanapadas
spread across different parts of thecontinent. The births of Mahavira
and Gautama Buddha in the 6th century BC heralded a new religious
movement in India. Mahavira propagated Jainism whose message was
asceticism, austerity and non-violence; GautamaBuddha, preached that `
Nirvana ` was to be attained through the conquest of self. The
political map of ancient India was made up of myriad kingdoms with
fluctuating boundaries. Thethird century BC in the timeline of ancient
India heralded the reign of the Maurya Empire . Chandragupta, Bindusar
and Ashoka were the famous kings of the Maurya dynasty. It was Ashoka
who converted intoBuddhism, and it is in his reign that Buddhism
spread to other parts of Asia. During the Mauryas, Hinduism took the
shape that fundamentally informsthe religion down to the present day.
The 4th and the 5th centuries A.D., Gupta Empire flourished almost
inevitably. The ancient history of India witnessed the Gupta periodas
the Golden Age in Indiantimeline with an overall development of Hindu
culture and political administration.
With the downfall of GuptaEmpire in the 6th century North India almost
inevitably reverted back to small republics and small monarchical
states. It was the time of chaos.

'Stones and trees calling out 'kill the Jews',' as revealed in the hadiths, is meantin a figurative sense.A believer will not act according to a voice coming from stones and trees andwill not kill an innocent person. A Muslim acts solely according to

Abu Huraira (ra) reported Allah's Messenger (saas) assaying:
"The Last Hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against
the Jews. The Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and
a stone or a tree would say: 'Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there
is a Jew behind me; come and kill him;' but the tree Gharqad would not
say, for it is the tree of the Jews."
(Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Fitan wa Ashrat as-Sa'ah, Book 41, 6985)
"So that Jews will hide behind trees and the tree will say "Muslim!
The servant of Allah! Come, look there is a Jewbehind me, he hid here,
behind me, come and punish him". Only the tree Gharqad will not say,
for it is the tree of the Jews."
(Kitab al-Fitan, hadith. 2239)
One statement by Mr. Adnan Oktar concerning hadiths in which our
Prophet (saas) refers to "stones and trees in the End Times telling
Muslims the location of Jews hidingbehind them and saying 'Come and
kill them'," reads:
"We look at events in thelight of the Qur'an and the hadiths. But one
cannot issue a pronouncement on the basis of one single verse in the
Qur'an. One must look at the verses as a whole. The same appliesto the
hadiths. The otherhadiths complement one another. Therefore, if
someone comes and tells us, 'There is a Jew here, come and kill him,'
we will not kill him. Whyshould we? That person would have to commit a
crime. And if he commitsa crime he will have to be tried. And the
judge will pronounce sentenceat the end of the trial. There is a whole
system and legal procedure involved. It does not mean that anyone who
sees him can kill him and try him himself. We can see what this
hadithmeans by looking at others. Otherwise, it is a sin to kill an
innocent Jew, a person, a child, standing there, and heed a voice from
a stone telling us to kill them. That is unacceptable. We must grasp
what our Prophet (saas) really means. It would appear the hadithmeans
this: Jews who are atheists or enemies of religion cannot hide. Those
who hide among wood or stones will be located using all kinds
ofelectrical devices and equipment, and the evil and activities of
these people will thus be prevented, and that will be a punishment for
them. That is what the hadith may be implying.

Syria in civil war, saysUN official Herve Ladsous

Syria is now in a state of civil war and the government has lost
control of "large chunks" of cities, the UN's head of peacekeeping has
told reporters.
It is the first time a UN official has formally voiced that view.
His comments came as UN monitors in Syria were fired on as they tried
to reach the besieged town ofHaffa.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton accused Russia of
supplyingattack helicopters to the Syrian government.
She said the move would"escalate the conflict quite dramatically".
Russia maintains its arms shipments to Syria are unrelated to the
conflict there.BBC state departement correspondent
Hillary Clinton said the Russian move - sending helicopters to Syria -
wouldescalate the conflict in Syriadramatically. She said the US had
confronted Russia about its arms shipment toSyria but Moscow insisted
that the arms were not being used internally against people.
That, the secretary of state said, was patently untrue. State
department spokesperson Victoria Nuland declined to give details about
the source of Mrs Clinton's information, but she said the comments
were referring to new helicopters that were en route to Syria, and not
Syria's existing fleet.
The Pentagon has said it's not aware of specific reports of
helicopters beingdelivered but acknowledged that the Syrian government
was using helicopter gunships to attack people and that Russia was
re-supplying the Syrian army.
Mr Ladsous, UN under-secretary for peacekeeping operations, said the
attack on the UN team near Haffa was deliberate.
Asked whether he believedSyria was now in a civil war, Mr Ladsous told
a small group of reporters:"Yes, I think we can say that.
"Clearly what is happening is that the government of Syria lost some
large chunks of territory, several cities to the opposition, and wants
to retake control."
The UN and the US have warned of an alarming escalation in violence in
Haffa, amid reports of a build-up of government forces around the
town.
UN monitors first tried to reach Haffa on Monday but were denied access.
On Tuesday, government forces gave them permission to pass throughthe
last checkpoint before the town, but the monitorsjudged the situation
to be"unsafe" and turned back, aUN spokeswoman said.
As they were leaving, an angry crowd threw stones and metal bars at
the UN team before unknown assailants opened fire, the spokeswoman
said.
None of the observers was hurt.
The BBC's Barbara Plett, at the UN in New York, says UN officials have
been speaking this week not only about an intensification of
government military operations, including firing from helicopters, but
also about a dramatic increase in more sophisticated urban attacks by
the opposition.
Hillary Clinton: "We have confronted the Russians about stopping their
continued arms shipments to Syria"
Clashes
Earlier this month, activists said Syrian government forces killed 108
people in the region of Houla, in Homs province, and 78 people in the
village of Qubair, in Hama province.
Syria blames the violence on foreign-backed armed terrorist gangs.
The UN monitors are in Syria to observe the implementation of a peace
plan brokered by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan. However, a ceasefire
whichwas supposed to come intoeffect on 12 April never took hold.
Mr Annan has called for another international conference on Syria, but
nodate or list of participants has yet been announced.
Activists said Syrian forces fired mortars at protesters in the
eastern city of Deir al-Zour, killing at least 10 people.
They also reported clashes in central Homs province.
These claims cannot be verified independently as Syria severely
restricts journalists' freedom of movement.

An experimental solar-powered plane landed in Morocco's capital late
Tuesday after a 20-hour trip from Madrid in the first transcontinental
journey by a craft of its type.
With the wing span of a Boeing 777, the plane appeared out of the
pitch darkness over the runway,suddenly turning on its lights and
gliding to a landing in Rabat, its four propellers already still.
"It was perhaps the most beautiful flight of my life, Ihave dreamed
since I was a child of flying without using fuel," said pilot Bertrand
Piccard, who has already circumnavigated the world by balloon.
The single-seat aircraft is fitted with 12,000 solar cells across its
immense wings and but only weighs just as much as theaverage family
car, according to organizers.
The plane is the first of its kind to fly both during thenight and day
as the solar panels charge the batteries for night flying.
Piccard descended from the plane, apparently unfatigued by the long
flight in the cramped cockpit. He said the Solar Impulse project had
chosen Morocco because of its ambitious plans to increase its reliance
on solar power.
"We came here out of admiration for Morocco's pioneering solar energy
program," he said, flashinga brilliant smile and hugging members of
his team on the tarmac. "All ofthe technology on this plane can be
used in daily life."
Morocco is set to begin construction on a huge solar energy farm in
the south as part of an ambitious project to lessen its dependence on
fossil fuels and produce 2,000 megawatts of solar energy by 2020.
It also plans to eventually export the energy to Europe.
Solar Impulse arrived in Madrid from Switzerland in late May on the
first leg of the journey, but the delicate craft was delayed for
several days by bad weather before it could continue its journey to
Morocco. The two-leg Europe to Africa trip covered 2,500 kilometers
(1,554 miles).
The light craft can only fly in perfect weather. The plane has managed
to climb to 28,000 feet (8,535 meters) and reached top speeds of over
75 mph (120 kph), though its usual cruising speed is just over half
that.
The mission is being described as a final dress rehearsal for a
round-the-world flight with a new and improved plane in 2014 involving
five stops.
The project began in 2003and is estimated to cost about $100 million
over 10 years.
