I am a Muslim convert, Alhamdulillah. I was raised a misguided
Christian kaafir, and then Allah guided me to Islam and the Sunnah.
However, I then adoptedShiite beliefs and did many horrible sins like
insulting the Sahaba of the Prophet : such as AbuBakr, Umar, Uthman,
Lady Aisha, etc (May Allah Bless Them All). I have just repented and
returned to the Sunnah and I am a Sunni Muslim insha'Allah and
Alhamdulillah! I'm cryingin repentance, may Allahaccept it. What
should I do with Shi'ite books I have since they have thename of Allah
written in them should I put them away somewhere or throw them out?
Also I suffer from terriblewaswas (likely from the sins of cursing the
sahaba, and lying against Allah with blasphemies like comparing his
creation to him with the Shi'ites so-called "12 Imams" which are all
scholars of Ahl al-Sunnha like Ali ibnAbi Talib RA, etc. and the Mahdi
will be born later at the end of time when the Muslim Prophet Isa AS
returns). I don't even want to speak of them, as I know the hadith
says not to talk or act upon the waswas one hears. But I feel as if
the shaytan is giving me horrific waswas to try to scare me about
whether the Deen I know is true really is true Allah FORGIVE ME (I'm
nearly crying as I write this)!!! The shaytan's waswas tells me "are
you sure about Allah" and then shaytan scares me with thoughts that
other accursed kuffar pagan religions allegedly are"appealing" I know
the hadith tells us that at thetime of death these fearscan occur

is One and Prophet Muhammadibn Abdullah is his slave and final

Also how do we answer claims of the kuffar (like Christians, Jews,
etc) who claim that their kuffar false "prayers" allegedly produced
them"miracles" we know thatAllah will answer the person who calls upon
him and that this world is a test. I found this link interesting

Also it makes me feel good to read about the stories of the miracles
Allah bestowed on the Prophet and upon the righteous Muslims today
like being cured of diseases like cancer see one example an American
Muslim convertwoman named Aminah Assilmi.
Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly:
Praise be to Allah Who has guided you to Islam and given you the
blessing of Tawheed (belief in His Oneness), and has brought you back
to the truth by His grace, kindness and blessing. We ask Allah to make
you steadfast in adhering to the truth and to guide you to true
guidance and goodness, and to help you to fear Him in word and deed.
You have done well by wishing to learn and in your eagerness to find
out the truth. We ask Allah to bless you with understanding of Islam.
Secondly:
If you know of some daa'iyahs (callers to Islam) and seekers of
knowledge who are trustworthy in terms of their knowledge and
methodology, who needsuch books in order to refute the Shi'ah and
point out how they are misguided, you could give these books to them,
so long as they aresafe from their evil and can make use of them in
calling people to the right way.
If you are not able to do that, then you can destroy them by
burningthem, burying them or cutting them up in such a way as to
obscure verses of the Qur'aan and names of Allah, and if some words
remain visible that does not matter. You could use a paper shredder
for this purpose.

Thirdly:
What you are facing of waswaas (whispers fromthe Shaytaan) is
something ordinary that happens to believers; you should not be
worried or distracted by it, but you have to try to get rid of it by
doing thefollowing:
1. Seeking refuge withAllah and seeking His help
2. Remembering Allah and trying to control your thoughts so that
you can put a stop to these whispers
3. Focusing strongly on worship and following the commandsof
Allah, seeking His pleasure thereby. When you focus completely on
worship in a serious andreal manner, you will forget about the
distraction of these whispers, in sha Allah.
4. Turning to Allah a great deal and calling upon Him in du'aa',
asking Him to heal you from this problem.

Fourthly:
Du'aa' (supplication) is of two types:
1. Du'aa' in the sense of worship. What is meant is that a person
worships Allah, may He be exalted, persistently with any kind of
worship, in the heart, byphysical actions or in financial terms.
2. Du'aa' in the sense of asking, which is asking to be given that
which is of benefit or forthat which is harmful to be warded off. In
other words it is asking Allah, may He be exalted, for that which will
benefit one in this world and in the Hereafter, and to ward off that
which will harm him in this world and in the Hereafter.
This is something that believers and non-believers have in common.

Fifthly:
The supplication of the disbelievers, if it is a supplication to
someoneother than Allah, such as the supplication of the Christians to
their object of worship the Messiah (peace be upon him) or to the
Virgin Mary, or thesupplication of idol worshippers to their idols, is
a supplication based on misguidance that will not bring any benefit;
rather it will be a cause of punishment for them in the Hereafter,
because it is associating others with Allah, may He be exalted.
Allah, may He be exalted,says (interpretation of the meaning):
"For Him (Alone) is the Word of Truth (i.e. none has the right to be
worshipped but He). Andthose whom they (polytheists and disbelievers)
invoke, answer them no more than one who stretches forth his hand (at
the edge of a deep well) for water to reach his mouth, but it reaches
him not, and the invocation of the disbelievers is nothing but an
error (i.e. of no use)"
[ar-Ra 'd 13:14].
Ibn Katheer (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his Tafseer (2/785):
What is meant is that just as the one who stretches forth his hand to
the water, either to take some of it from a distance will not benefit
from the water that doesnot reach his mouth, similarly these
mushrikeen who worship another god alongside Allah will never benefit
from that in this world or in the Hereafter. End quote.
Sixthly:
The supplication of the disbelievers to Allah maybe answered
sometimes,for reasons such as establishing proof against the
disbelievers or to prove their disbelief, denial and stubbornness; or
to restore justice to those among them who have been wronged, because
Allah enjoins justice and forbids injustice; or because He has
guaranteed to provide for them in this world, so if they ask Him for
provision He grants it to them; or to manifest His kindness,
generosity andblessing to all people.
Allah, may He be exalted,says (interpretation of the meaning):
"And when harm touches you upon the sea, those that you call upon
besides Him vanishfrom you except Him (Allah Alone). But when He
brings you safely to land, you turn away (from Him). And man is ever
ungrateful"
[al-Isra' 17:67].
"Say (O Muhammad SAW): Who rescues you from the darkness of theland
and the sea (dangers like storms), when you call upon Him in humility
and in secret (saying): If He (Allah) only saves us from this
(danger), we shall truly be grateful.
Say (O Muhammad SAW): Allah rescues you from it and from all (other)
distresses, and yet you worship others besides Allah"
[al-An'aam 6: 63-64]
"Is not He (better than your gods) Who responds to the distressed one,
when he calls Him, and Who removes the evil, and makes you inheritors
of the earth, generations after generations. Is there any ilah (god)
withAllah? Little is that you remember!"
[an-Naml 27:62]
"And He gave you of all that you asked for, and if you count the
Blessings of Allah, never will you be able to countthem. Verily! Man
is indeed an extreme wrong-doer, - a disbeliever (an extreme ingrate,
denies Allah's Blessings by disbelief, and by worshipping others
besides Allah, andby disobeying Allah and His Prophet Muhammad SAW)"
[Ibraaheem 14:34].
The apparent meaning of these verses indicates that the fact that
Allah answers some of the prayers of the disbelievers is to prove
their disbelief and denial, and to establish proof against them, or to
manifest His mercy, grace and kindness by helping those who are in
desperate need and saving those who are in distress.
The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)
said: "Fear the prayer of the oppressed, even if he is a disbeliever,
for there isno barrier (between it and Allah)."
Narrated by Ahmad, 12140; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh
at-Targheeb wa't-Tarheeb, 2231
This indicates that Allah responds to the prayer of the disbeliever
who iswronged, because Allah enjoins justice and forbids injustice,
and He restores justice to those who are wronged even if they are
disbelievers, because His justice is perfect.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said in Majmoo' al-Fataawa, 1/206:
All of mankind, both believers and disbelievers, ask of Allah and
Allah may answer the supplication of the disbeliever. If the
disbelievers ask Allah forprovision, He grants them provision and
water. If harm touches them at sea, they will turn to no one except
Him. Then when He brings them safely to land, they turn away andman is
ever ungrateful. End quote.
He also said in Majmoo' al-Fataawa, 1/233:
With regard to answering the prayers of those who ask, in general
terms Allah answers the supplicationof the one who is in distress and
of the one who is wronged, even if he is a disbeliever. End quote.
Seventhly:
The fact that Allah answers the supplicationof the disbelievers does
not imply that He loves them or that He supportsor honours them, or
thatHe is pleased with their religion and beliefs. Rather that might
be part of letting them get carried away (in their misguidance) and
hastening good things for them in this world sothat they may taste the
punishment in the Hereafter. Allah, may He be glorified and
exalted,does not love the disbelievers and is not pleased with them or
their disbelief.
Ibn al-Qayyim said in Ighaathat al-Lahfaan, 1/13:
Not everyone whose supplication Allah answers has attained Hispleasure
or love, nor is He pleased with his actions. He may answer the prayers
of the righteous and evildoers, believers and disbelievers.
Many people offer supplication in which they overstep the mark, or
stipulate conditions, or ask for things for which it is not
permissible to ask. Then they get that or some of it, and they think
that their actions are righteous and pleasing to Allah, but they are
in the same position as onewho is given abundant wealth and children
so that he might get carried away (in his misguidance), whilst he
thinks that Allah is hastening to give him allgood things. But Allah,
may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
"So, when they forgot (the warning) with which they had been reminded,
We opened tothem the gates of every (pleasant) thing, until in the
midst of their enjoyment in that whichthey were given, all of a
sudden, We took them to punishment, and lo! They were plunged into
destruction with deep regrets and sorrows."
[al-An'aam 6:44].
Supplication may be an act of worship for whichthe one who does it
will be rewarded, or it may be asking to have one's needs met but that
may be harmful to the individual: either he will be punished as a
result of what he gets or he will be lowered in status,so he gets his
needs met but is punished for neglecting his duties or overstepping
the mark. End quote.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said in Iqtida' as-Siraat al-Mustaqeem, p. 89
Not everyone to whom Allah grants provision and help, whether in
response to his supplication or otherwise, is among those whom Allah
loves and helps; rather He, may He be glorified, grants provision to
believers and disbelievers, righteous and evildoers. He may answer
their supplication to give them what they ask for in this world, but
they have no share of the hereafter.
The scholars stated that some disbelievers who were Christians
besiegeda Muslim city and their water ran out, so they asked the
Muslims to give them some fresh water and they would lift the siege
from them. The Muslim leaders discussed the matter andsaid, rather we
should leave them until thirst has weakened them, then we can defeat
them. Then the Christians prayed for rain and asked Allah to give them
water, and He answered their prayer. Some of the common people were
confused, so the king said to one of the scholars: Say something to
explain thesituation to the people. So he issued instructionsthat a
minbar be set up for him and he said: O Allah, we know that these are
among those whose provision You have guaranteed, as Yousay
(interpretation of the meaning): "And no (moving) living creature is
there on earth but its provision is due from Allah" [Hood 11:6]. They
called upon You in distress, and You answerthe one who is in distress
when he calls upon You. You granted them rain, because You have
guaranteed their provision and because they called upon You in
distress, not because Youlove them or because You love their religion.
Now we want to see a sign that will make faith steadfast in the hearts
ofYour believing slaves. So Allah sent against them (the enemy) a wind
that destroyed them, and so on.
Under this heading also comes one who may offer supplication but
overstep the mark in doing so, either by asking for that which is not
appropriate or by offering supplication in which there is disobedience
towards Allah, whether it be by associating others with Him (shirk) or
otherwise.Then if he gets some of what he wanted, he think that this
is an indication that his deed was righteous. He is like the one who
is given abundant wealth and sons so that might get carried away (in
his misguidance), so he thinks that good things have been hastened for
him. But Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the
meaning):
"Do they think that We enlarge them in wealth and children,
We hasten unto them with good things (in thisworldly life so that they
will have no share of good things in the Hereafter)? Nay, but
theyperceive not"
[al-Mu'minoon 23:55].
Eighthly:
When Allah answers some of the supplications of the disbelievers, it
takes the form of fulfilling some oftheir wishes with regardto worldly
matters.
But when Allah answers the supplication of the Muslim, one of three
things happen: either heis given what he asked for, or an equivalent
evilis diverted from him, or it (the reward for the supplication) is
stored up for him in the Hereafter.
The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "There
isno Muslim who offers supplication in which there is no sin or
severing of ties of kinship, but Allah will give him one of three
things in return for it: either what he asked forwill be hastened for
him,or (reward) will be stored up for him in the Hereafter or an
equivalent evil will be diverted from him."
Narrated by Ahmad, 10749; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in
Mishkaatal-Masaabeeh, 2199
Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) said in Fath al-Baari, 11/95:
Everyone who offers supplication receives a response, but the response
may vary. Sometimes he will get exactly what he asked for, and
sometimes he will be compensated (with something equivalent). There
are saheeh hadeeths which speak of that.And Allaah knows best.

Ad’iyah Mahzoorah (forbidden du’aa’s) - Does the fact that Allah answers the prayers of the disbelievers indicate that what they believe istrue?.
Ad’iyah Mahzoorah (forbidden du’aa’s) - Is there a specific prayer for increasing provision?.
"You pray two rak'ahs, reciting in each rak'ah al-Hamd (i.e.,
al-Faatihah) once and at-Tawheed (i.e., al-Ikhlaas) once, making the
bowing and prostration lengthy. After finishing the prayer, say: 'O
Most Glorious, O One, O Most Generous, I turn to You by virtue of
Muhammad Your Prophet, the Prophet of mercy, (blessings of Allah be
upon him and his family); O Muhammad, O Messenger of Allah, I turn by
virtue of you to Allah, my Lord and your Lord, the Lord of all things.
I ask you, O Allah, to send blessings upon Muhammad and the members of
his household, and I ask Youfor a breath of mercy from You, quick
relief, and abundant provision,so that I may put my affairs in order,
pay off my debts and support my dependents.'".
Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly:
In the saheeh Sunnah there is no known prayer specifically for asking
for increased provision. The prayer described in the question with
this du'aa'(supplication) is an innovated prayer; it comes under the
heading of prescribing in religion something that Allah has not
prescribed, and introducing innovation (bid'ah) that is prohibited.
Al-Haafiz Ibn Katheer (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
Ahl as-Sunnah wa'l-Jamaa'ah say concerning any action orword that is
not proven from the Sahaabah that it is an innovation (bid'ah),
because if it were something good, they would have done it before us.
They did not omit any good attribute but they hastened to do it or
attain it.
End quote from Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 7/278-279
Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan (may Allah preserve him) said:
The innovations that have been introduced inthe area of worship
nowadays are many. Butthe basic principle with regard to acts of
worship is tawqeef [i.e., they can only be known through divine
Revelation and sound texts of hadeeth, with no room for personal
opinion], so no acts of worship are prescribed except on the basis of
evidence. Anything for which there is no evidence is an innovation
(bid'ah), because the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon
him) said: "Whoever does an action that is not part of this matter of
ours will have it rejected." (Agreed upon). The acts of worship that
are donenowadays for which there is no evidence are very many.
End quote from Kitaab at-Tawheed, p. 160
Secondly:
The words of the worshipper in this du'aa'after this innovated prayer,
"I turn to You by virtue of Muhammad Your Prophet, the Prophet of
mercy, (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family); O Muhammad, O
Messenger of Allah, I turn by virtue of you to Allah…" are words that
are not permissible, and come under the headingof innovated tawassul
(means of seeking to draw closer to Allah) thatis forbidden.

Anyone who calls upon the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of
Allah be upon him) after his death, or who calls upon anyone else
among the dead to wardoff harm or bring benefits is a mushrik who has
associated someone else with Allah in the sense of major shirk that
puts one beyond the pale of Islam, and he has to repent to Allah, may
He be exalted.

Thirdly:
There are some means ofincreasing provision thatare prescribed in
Islam, which we shall highlighthere, so as to adopt the means that are
prescribed and warn against innovations in religion. These include:
· Istighfaar (praying for forgiveness)
Allah, may He be exalted,says (interpretation of the meaning):
"I said (to them): Ask forgiveness from your Lord; Verily, He is Oft-Forgiving;
He will send rain to you in abundance;
And give you increase in wealth and children, andbestow on you gardens
and bestow on you rivers"
[Nooh 70:10-12].
· Upholding ties of kinship
Al-Bukhaari (2067) and Muslim (2557) narrated from Anas ibn Maalik
(may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (blessings
and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever would like his rizq
(provision) to be increased and his life to be extended, should uphold
the ties of kinship."
An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
"his rizq (provision) to be increased" means to be expanded and made
abundant or, it was said,to be blessed (barakah). End quote.
· Giving a great deal of charity
Allah, may He be exalted,says (interpretation of the meaning):
"Say: Truly, my Lord enlarges the provision for whom He wills of His
slaves, and (also) restricts (it) for him, and whatsoever you spend of
anything (in Allah's Cause), He will replace it.And He is the Best of
providers"
[Saba' 34:39].
Muslim (2588) narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with
him) that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon
him) said: "Charity does not decrease wealth."
An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
They (the scholars) mentioned two meanings of this hadeeth, one of
which isthat (the wealth) will be blessed (as a result of giving
charity) and harmwill be warded off from it, so the apparent decrease
will be compensated for by means of hidden blessing (barakah). This is
something that is well known from experience.The second is that even
if it appears to be decreased outwardly, there will be compensation
for that inthe reward that results from it, and it will be increased
manifold. End quote.
· Being mindful of Allah and fearing Him (taqwa)
Allah, may He be exalted,says (interpretation of the meaning):
"And whosoever fears Allaah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a
way for him to get out (from every difficulty).
3. And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine"
[al-Talaaq 65:2-3].
· Performing Hajj and 'Umrah often, following one with the other
At-Tirmidhi (810) narrated that 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ood said: The
Messenger of Allah (sa) said: "Make the Hajj and 'Umrah follow each
other closely, for they remove poverty and sins as the bellows removes
the dross of iron, gold and silver, and an accepted Hajj brings no
less a reward than Paradise.". It was classedas saheeh by al-Albaani.
· Du'aa' (supplication)
It was narrated by Ibn Maajah (925) from Umm Salamah that the
Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to
say, when he said the salaam at the end of Fajrprayer: "Allaahumma
inni as'aluka rizqan tayyiban, wa 'ilman naafi'an, wa 'amalan
mutaqabbalan (O Allaah, I ask you for good (halaal) provision,
beneficial knowledge and accepted good deeds)."
Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah.

"I turn to You by virtue of Muhammad Your Prophet, the Prophet of
mercy, (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family); O Muhammad, O
Messenger of Allah, I turn by virtue of you to Allah…" are words that
are not permissible, and come under the headingof innovated tawassul
(means of seeking to draw closer to Allah) thatis forbidden.

Anyone who calls upon the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of
Allah be upon him) after his death, or who calls upon anyone else
among the dead to wardoff harm or bring benefits is a mushrik who has
associated someone else with Allah in the sense of major shirk that
puts one beyond the pale of Islam, and he has to repent to Allah, may
He be exalted.

Thirdly:
There are some means ofincreasing provision thatare prescribed in
Islam, which we shall highlighthere, so as to adopt the means that are
prescribed and warn against innovations in religion. These include:
· Istighfaar (praying for forgiveness)
Allah, may He be exalted,says (interpretation of the meaning):
"I said (to them): Ask forgiveness from your Lord; Verily, He is Oft-Forgiving;
He will send rain to you in abundance;
And give you increase in wealth and children, andbestow on you gardens
and bestow on you rivers"
[Nooh 70:10-12].
· Upholding ties of kinship
Al-Bukhaari (2067) and Muslim (2557) narrated from Anas ibn Maalik
(may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (blessings
and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever would like his rizq
(provision) to be increased and his life to be extended, should uphold
the ties of kinship."
An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
"his rizq (provision) to be increased" means to be expanded and made
abundant or, it was said,to be blessed (barakah). End quote.
· Giving a great deal of charity
Allah, may He be exalted,says (interpretation of the meaning):
"Say: Truly, my Lord enlarges the provision for whom He wills of His
slaves, and (also) restricts (it) for him, and whatsoever you spend of
anything (in Allah's Cause), He will replace it.And He is the Best of
providers"
[Saba' 34:39].
Muslim (2588) narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with
him) that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon
him) said: "Charity does not decrease wealth."
An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
They (the scholars) mentioned two meanings of this hadeeth, one of
which isthat (the wealth) will be blessed (as a result of giving
charity) and harmwill be warded off from it, so the apparent decrease
will be compensated for by means of hidden blessing (barakah). This is
something that is well known from experience.The second is that even
if it appears to be decreased outwardly, there will be compensation
for that inthe reward that results from it, and it will be increased
manifold. End quote.
· Being mindful of Allah and fearing Him (taqwa)
Allah, may He be exalted,says (interpretation of the meaning):
"And whosoever fears Allaah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a
way for him to get out (from every difficulty).
3. And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine"
[al-Talaaq 65:2-3].
· Performing Hajj and 'Umrah often, following one with the other
At-Tirmidhi (810) narrated that 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ood said: The
Messenger of Allah (sa) said: "Make the Hajj and 'Umrah follow each
other closely, for they remove poverty and sins as the bellows removes
the dross of iron, gold and silver, and an accepted Hajj brings no
less a reward than Paradise.". It was classedas saheeh by al-Albaani.
· Du'aa' (supplication)
It was narrated by Ibn Maajah (925) from Umm Salamah that the
Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to
say, when he said the salaam at the end of Fajrprayer: "Allaahumma
inni as'aluka rizqan tayyiban, wa 'ilman naafi'an, wa 'amalan
mutaqabbalan (O Allaah, I ask you for good (halaal) provision,
beneficial knowledge and accepted good deeds)."
Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah.

want to understand the meaning of this hadeethand how we can reconcile
between it andthe verses throughout the Book of Allah which enjoin and
encourage patience. I hope that youcan clarify that, with evidence,
because some people heard me praying for patience for my son, because
he is quick to get angry, and they warned me against doing that.

Firstly:
The hadeeth mentioned was narrated by at-Tirmidhi (3527) via
Abu'l-Ward from al-Lajlaaj from Mu'aadh ibn Jabal who said: The
Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) heard a man saying:
O Allah, I ask You for patience. He said: "You have asked Allah for
calamity; rather ask Him for well-being."
This is a da'eef (weak) hadeeth. It was quoted by al-Albaani in
ad-Da'eefah (4520) and he said: There is some weakness in this isnaad.
Abu'l-Ward is ibn Thumaamah ibn Hazn al-Qushayri, whom no one regarded
as trustworthy. Al-Haafiz said: His reports may be accepted if there
is corroborating evidence. End quote.
Al-Qaari (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
The argument here has to do with praying for patience before
calamitystrikes; however after calamity strikes, there is no reason
not to ask for patience; rather it is mustahabb, because Allah, may He
be exalted,says (interpretation of the meaning): "Our Lord!Pour forth
on us patience" [al-Baqarah 2:250].
That is because asking for patience should only come after the
calamity has befallen or the disaster has struck, or any situation in
which a person needs to be patient. In that case it is prescribed for
him to askAllah for patience. Allah, may He be exalted, says
(interpretation of the meaning):
"And when they advanced to meet Jaloot (Goliath) and his forces, they
invoked: Our Lord! Pour forth on us patience and make us victorious
over the disbelieving people.
So they routed them by Allah's Leave"
[al-Baqarah 2:250-251].
And Allah, may He be exalted, said concerning the sorcerers of
Pharaoh(interpretation of the meaning):
"They said: Verily, we arereturning to our Lord.
And you take vengeance on us only because we believed in the Ayat
(proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.) of our Lord when they
reached us! Our Lord! pour out on us patience, and cause us to die as
Muslims"
[al-A'raaf 7:125, 126].
But when one is in a state of well-being, it is appropriate to ask
Allah to complete His blessing, and to grant well-being and
protection.
Secondly:
There is nothing wrong, in sha Allah, with a person asking his Lord
for patience, restricting that to calamity if it should happen, or if
something should occur that requires patience. Itis quite natural that
man's life should not be free of trials and tribulations in which he
needs to be patient and to call upon Allah. Hence one of the
supplications of the Prophet (blessingsand peace of Allah be upon him)
was: "O Allaah, by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over
creation, keep me alive so long as You know that living is good for me
and cause me to die when You know thatdeath is better for me. O
Allaah, cause me to fear You in secret and in public. I ask You to
makeme true in speech in times of pleasure and of anger. I ask You to
make me moderate in time of wealth and of poverty. And I ask You for
everlasting delight and joy that will never cease.I ask You to make me
pleased with that which You have decreed and for an easy life after
death. I ask You for the sweetness of looking upon Your face and a
longing to meet You in amanner that does not entail a calamity that
will bring about harm ora trial that will cause deviation. O Allaah,
beautify us with the adornment of faith and make us among those who
guide and are rightly guided."
Narrated by an-Nasaa'i, 1305; Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in
Saheeh al-Jaami', no. 1301.
He asked Allah, may He be exalted, to bless him with contentment with
that which He decreed. Itis clear that what this means is a decree
that one dislikes, otherwise everyone is pleased and content with that
which he likes and which suits him. But this does not mean that this
is a du'aa'that something disliked be decreed, just as the other
du'aa' – in the same hadeeth – does notmean that one is asking for
poverty or death.
Thirdly:
The fact that your son is quick to get angry is a matter concerning
which it is appropriate to pray for patience. Theone who is quick to
get angry will react to the slightest annoyance and panic at any
problem; undoubtedly he is the one who is most in need of praying for
peace of mind, patience, calmnessand a good attitude. Therefore this
does not come under the headingof praying for calamity or seeking to
hasten it; rather this is a prayer forthe best remedy for him from the
problem he is faced with.And Allaah knows best.

sapling (a young tree), and then a man, or any other creation of Allah
Glory to Him, ate (or benefited) from it, except that it becomes a
Sadaqah (charity) for theplanter.
Source: Sahih Muslim.
Islam considers the slightest acts of helping others as charity! Even
smiling at others to make them happy is counted as charity. It is due
to our selfishness that mankind suffers. Letus give more and take
less.

for inviting others toAllah. They happened to pass by a group of
youths who were Muslims by birth but became gang members. The brothers
didn't give those gang members thenegative attitude that others give
while passing by them. Rather, they went and hand-shook with them out
of brotherhood. With love and affection, the brothers invited the
youths to come to the Masjid. Not being familiar with such kindness,
the gang members were surprisedand decided to come to the Masjid for
once. These youths were so much away from Islam that they were smoking
in the Masjid and doing a lot of other disrespectful acts. However,
brother Mahmud and others were discussing with them about the
Greatness of Allah with patience and endurance.A time came when the
brothers had to return to their homes and before leaving they advised
the gang members to turn towards Allah.
After several years, brother Mahmud was attending a large gathering of
Muslims when suddenly someonecalled him from the back. There were few
people dressed in sunnah standing behind him. They asked brother
Mahmud if he recognizesthem. They told him, �We are those gang members
whom you visited few years back. We decided to go out and learn more
about Islam and eventually changed our lives.�
Dear readers, we should never underestimate certain people because of
the way they are as every individual has the capacity to become a
friend of Allah. It is only Allah who guides; we can only try with
kindness to reach out to their hearts.

Chapter 3
One Hour of Contemplation Surpasses Sixty years of Worship
Abu Hurairah (Rad.) reported that Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)
said that contemplation for one hour (sa'at) is better thanworship for
60 years. Hadith.
In the subsequent matters, we draw your attention in such a way to the
truths and manners of creatures coming into existence that, on the one
hand, we grasp the essential favor of healthy organs that are created
under the control of the Exalted Unique Being. On the other hand, it
will fully become evident that if it were not for the supervision of
the Sole Creator, as in the verse:"Then He fashioned him in due
proportion," and if we were created by chance or spontaneously,we
would definitely suffer the deficiencies described in the following
discussion.
In the name of God, who opened the door of nothingness, and from it
created billions of types of creatures, living, non-living and so
forth, with incredible and rare forms and sorts, we start with the
following matters. What would we have been if Almighty God had not
brought us out of that nothingness, a state of non-existence, to
create us in the best shape and figure?
Translation: "We have indeed created Man in the best of molds." (95:4Q)
If Divine Will was to create us, then ponder! What would we have done,
had we been created in the category of inanimate entities, such as
rocks, sand, mines, trees, fruits, grains, vegetables, and thousands
of other like objects.
Let us submit that He had intended to create us as living entities.
What if we were created in the category of thousands of
non-humanorganisms, on land or in the seas, such as microbes,
mosquitoes and, at the very most, sheep, horses, goats, elephants or
some birds or in the form of some other creatures? What would we have
been then?
After all why O' man! Vicegerent of the Almighty Lord of the earth and
heavens, don't you ponder that before your creation, the ExaltedMost
Gracious and Most Merciful had bestowed allthese Favors unto you?!
Let us acknowledge that His Will was to create our selves in the form
of mankind!
If Almighty God had created us amongst false religions, corrupt
superstitious customs likefire-worshipping, Zoroastrianism, and other
doctrines, or even within the category of atheism and the denial ofHis
Existence, what wouldhave happened?
Why don't you reflect deeply, O Muslim! O Participant! in the militant
(militant, the struggle against Ego) school of God of earth and time?
What right did we have over Him that Heeternally placed His Grace,
unrequested, upon us? Now if we do something for His Happiness, how
would Heever waste it!
If Almighty God had not endorsed us and given the aptitude to acquire
knowledge, how could we ever come to perceivethis very text and its
resulting secrets and enlightenment? We should ponder! Let us look at
the following.
In the process of coming from non-existence to our fathers' loins, and
from there to our mothers' wombs millions of sperm cells like us from
one of whichwe were created, the restwere eliminated. If Almighty God
had eliminated and placed us in the line with those subject to
extinction, what would have happened?
If Exalted God had created us in the womb with an ugly appearance,or
with vision or other organs handicapped, what would have then
happened?
If Almighty God had not taken the baby out automatically, with His
compassion and beneficence from his mother's womb, despite its size
and disproportionality at the"exit", and man were to take it out
himself through an incision, would any woman be willing to have this
done to her? If it were at all possible, there would be much hardship,
and who would be capable of bearing this difficulty?
If we were eliminated, like other children of our age, through
different diseases, made paralyzed, powerless, illiterate or ignorant,
what would have then happened?
If Almighty God had not bestowed upon us to be raised in the warm
bosom of our parents, or due to other mishaps we would have been
desperate to do servitudeto others' homes, what would have happened
then?
If either the father or the mother goes away, and Almighty God had not
turned our relatives and other people compassionate to guard us, take
care of us and coach us toward higher education, how could weever come
to access this jewel-box of the secrets of the world of truth and
reality, the purity of Islamand its jurisprudence? What would have
happened then?
A lot of thanksgiving is needed!
What if the nerves in our body were not spread out like telephone
lines? How many times a day would we have suffered numerous wounds
from bits of rocks, wood, nails,needles, and other objects? Before we
notice what is happening, the wounds might become black and decay.
What would have happened under those circumstances?
If Almighty God had not given us memory, whether of things or words
told to us, what would we use to recall and what portion would we
recall when trying to relate. Taking and giving in communication would
then come to a complete halt, and each person would have to
encounterthe other personally in order to be able to talk tohim.
What If Almighty God hadprovided us with a limited intellect such as
He has provided the animals, under the name of instinct, to know only
how to reproduce, being vigil of enemies with some other limited
characteristics, but no more than this? What would we have been
andwhat could we have done in such a case? Verily, in this case, we
would have been big monkeys in the woods orin the mountains or in the
desert that our generation would have been completely extinct by now
due to other animals' strikes such as lions, tigers and others?
If Almighty God had not oiled consistently the body and head's hair
andgiven them unbreakable form, it would be necessary that we oil them
ourselves, so that they would not break. What a situation! What kind
of people would be employed in this kind of work, all trying to
preserve personal beauty, but with what difficulty!
If Exalted God had made human body hairy like that of a sheep, what
would have happened then?
If Almighty God had not automated human hair growth appropriately and
within measure, the growing of each hair would be a task, which would
fall on our shoulders. What would have happened and whatwould we have
done under that circumstance, especially if we were unable to pull?
If Almighty God had caused the hair of the eyelid, eyebrows, and body
to consistently grow like the beard, head and other organs, would we
not be facing inconvenience pertaining to their cutting, styling and
fashioning?
If Almighty God had not endowed humans with hair on his eyelids and
eyebrows, do you know how awful the most beautiful Human would look
like?
If the hair on the eyelid or eyebrow were breakable, needing to
beoiled with regular or some standard oil, and forgotten about, they
would simply break and fall. What situation and what an appearance we
would have had!
If Almighty God had not created the inner lens in the eye that
enlarges the object's image, or if we could see only as big as the
pupils we have; how many hours would we spend rotating our head so
that we could scan a one meter spot. How could we have managed then?
What if Almighty God hadnot automated a required, consistent wetness
in our eyes, and our eyelids did not automatically blink? Could you
imagine in thatcase what would have happened and what would we have
done? Well, each individual would always have needed clean cotton and
q-tips in order to clean one's or friends each other's eyes whenever
these became unclear and dark from the environment and work. In this
case, superb eye cleaners would be needed, since inexperience could
causewounds to the eyes or blindness.
What if there were nobody available in the valleys or deserts, how
would eyes have been cleaned? Or, what if we had to wait for someone
to clean our eyes so that we could see our way. There are expert
ear-cleaners in some countries that have special dress and
instruments. But the eyes are much more indispensable and their
cleaning is more delicate.
If Almighty God had not made human eyes powerful and energetic
vis-a-vis sunlight, and wewere like bats in our holes during the day,

amouth, so we would not be able to eat anything but grain, then what

down by means of our hands, how difficult it would have been and what
would have happened?
What if Almighty God hadnot given the tongue twopeculiar eyes and
unique sensitive perception to be used during the chewing process to
take the morsels from the left to the right and push them under the
molar teeth, placing them there? It does not do this job just once,
but repeatsevery time we chew. It collects food from around the mouth,
and takes it to be chewed under the molars and other teeth. Reflect
upon this perfect order of creation in each organ, could it ever be
possible without a Prudent Artificer? No, never.
If the tongue were not operative with awaken, fully vigilant "eyes" in
thecave of the mouth, its half would be somewhat injured and come
under the teeth every time we ate. We would have to perform this task
with our fingers, provided they are in the mouth during chewing; hence
they would be injured during the first or secondattempt. Ponder how

If God Almighty had not endowed man with the capability of speech and
writing, what difficulty would his searching intellect have to meet?
For he wished to talk andcould not, or his order or command to be
carried out somewhere far away but was unfamiliar with written
communication. So what should he have done and how could he solve the
problem, which existed far away, what would have happened then?
If food by God's command did not go down our throat automatically, we
would have to push it down for each other using, for example, a
skewer. Then, what would have happened? What would have been our
condition?
Is this system spontaneous?
Ponder! Does the claim that creation came aboutby chance, or that
Almighty God does not exist, have any sense except for being a wheel
within the wheel, or the hands of control or power behind curtains?
If, during the descent of a morsel of food, the epiglottis did not
automatically lock the trachea's inlet, what problems we would
havebeen facing pertaining toa morsel reaching the stomach? Reflect on
how the epiglottis in the throat is acquainted withthe performance of
this task. Is it still appropriatefor man to consider the creation of
this entire universe as coincidental, with the absence of the Almighty
Creator? The answer is negative.
If Almighty God had not placed the heart in the thorax, but had
created itoutside the thorax, with its connections with the inside of
the body through arteries and veins, how impossible would it have been
to save the organ from accidents and other mishaps? How would we have
fared in trying to protect it?
If we had to execute the heart's pumping, pressing it constantly, what
difficult a task it would have been and what would have become of us,
and how would we have handled it while at work and business?
What if there was no pumping of the heart and it did not keep
circulating blood throughout the body? Indeed blood would go downward
after a few hours' walk, and then wewould have to lift up our legs and
wait a while until blood comes rushing toward the head and chest. Then
what would have happened, what would we have done, and what would have
been our conditions?
Ponder well! Are all theseorgans filled with these mysteries created
spontaneously? As some say so, and deny the Almighty Great, Omnipotent
and Self-Existent God.
If Almighty God had not given man, hands and fingers, then what
condition we would be in now and how would we transfer things to our
mouth?
Do you know that the flesh from the beginning of the nail to its end
grows periodically, taking the nail from its beginning to its end
forward. Then from thereit subtly separates from the nail so that we
do notnotice it. Subsequently, ittakes its reverse cycle from the end
to beginning of the nail.
As an evidence to this truth, you might have observed that the
beginning of the nail that has turned red or has become black after
being struck, especially if it is located at the root ofthe nail.
After a short while, approximately six months the black spot has
gradually risen reaching the end of the nail.
Hence, we must ponder that if the nail were to slip over the flesh and
come forward, naturally underneath the nail having the most delicate
sensitivity to pain, indeed we would feel an intense discomfort or at
least notice the separation of nail and flesh. No pain, or processing
related to thisaction, is, however, noticeable to us. These processes
well convey that the flesh underneaththe nail is circulating along
with the nail letting the nail reach the end and then it takes the
reverse cycle towards thebeginning of the nail. Therefore, a piece of
flesh from the finger side, if separated and leftbehind from the
flowing process, aches. It bothers us and makes us feel uncomfortable
unless we cut it.

One Hour of Contemplation Surpasses Sixty years of Worship
Abu Hurairah (Rad.) reported that Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)

In the subsequent matters, we draw your attention in such a way to the
truths and manners of creatures coming into existence that, on the one
hand, we grasp the essential favor of healthy organs that are created
under the control of the Exalted Unique Being. On the other hand, it
will fully become evident that if it were not for the supervision of
the Sole Creator, as in the verse:"Then He fashioned him in due
proportion," and if we were created by chance or spontaneously,we
would definitely suffer the deficiencies described in the following
discussion.
In the name of God, who opened the door of nothingness, and from it
created billions of types of creatures, living, non-living and so
forth, with incredible and rare forms and sorts, we start with the
following matters. What would we have been if Almighty God had not
brought us out of that nothingness, a state of non-existence, to
create us in the best shape and figure?
Translation: "We have indeed created Man in the best of molds." (95:4Q)
If Divine Will was to create us, then ponder! What would we have done,
had we been created in the category of inanimate entities, such as
rocks, sand, mines, trees, fruits, grains, vegetables, and thousands
of other like objects.
Let us submit that He had intended to create us as living entities.
What if we were created in the category of thousands of
non-humanorganisms, on land or in the seas, such as microbes,
mosquitoes and, at the very most, sheep, horses, goats, elephants or
some birds or in the form of some other creatures? What would we have
been then?
After all why O' man! Vicegerent of the Almighty Lord of the earth and
heavens, don't you ponder that before your creation, the ExaltedMost
Gracious and Most Merciful had bestowed allthese Favors unto you?!
Let us acknowledge that His Will was to create our selves in the form
of mankind!
If Almighty God had created us amongst false religions, corrupt
superstitious customs likefire-worshipping, Zoroastrianism, and other
doctrines, or even within the category of atheism and the denial ofHis
Existence, what wouldhave happened?
Why don't you reflect deeply, O Muslim! O Participant! in the militant
(militant, the struggle against Ego) school of God of earth and time?
What right did we have over Him that Heeternally placed His Grace,
unrequested, upon us? Now if we do something for His Happiness, how
would Heever waste it!
If Almighty God had not endorsed us and given the aptitude to acquire
knowledge, how could we ever come to perceivethis very text and its
resulting secrets and enlightenment? We should ponder! Let us look at
the following.
In the process of coming from non-existence to our fathers' loins, and
from there to our mothers' wombs millions of sperm cells like us from
one of whichwe were created, the restwere eliminated. If Almighty God
had eliminated and placed us in the line with those subject to
extinction, what would have happened?
If Exalted God had created us in the womb with an ugly appearance,or
with vision or other organs handicapped, what would have then
happened?
If Almighty God had not taken the baby out automatically, with His
compassion and beneficence from his mother's womb, despite its size
and disproportionality at the"exit", and man were to take it out
himself through an incision, would any woman be willing to have this
done to her? If it were at all possible, there would be much hardship,
and who would be capable of bearing this difficulty?
If we were eliminated, like other children of our age, through
different diseases, made paralyzed, powerless, illiterate or ignorant,
what would have then happened?
If Almighty God had not bestowed upon us to be raised in the warm
bosom of our parents, or due to other mishaps we would have been
desperate to do servitudeto others' homes, what would have happened
then?
If either the father or the mother goes away, and Almighty God had not
turned our relatives and other people compassionate to guard us, take
care of us and coach us toward higher education, how could weever come
to access this jewel-box of the secrets of the world of truth and
reality, the purity of Islamand its jurisprudence? What would have
happened then?
A lot of thanksgiving is needed!
What if the nerves in our body were not spread out like telephone
lines? How many times a day would we have suffered numerous wounds
from bits of rocks, wood, nails,needles, and other objects? Before we
notice what is happening, the wounds might become black and decay.
What would have happened under those circumstances?
If Almighty God had not given us memory, whether of things or words
told to us, what would we use to recall and what portion would we
recall when trying to relate. Taking and giving in communication would
then come to a complete halt, and each person would have to
encounterthe other personally in order to be able to talk tohim.
What If Almighty God hadprovided us with a limited intellect such as
He has provided the animals, under the name of instinct, to know only
how to reproduce, being vigil of enemies with some other limited
characteristics, but no more than this? What would we have been
andwhat could we have done in such a case? Verily, in this case, we
would have been big monkeys in the woods orin the mountains or in the
desert that our generation would have been completely extinct by now
due to other animals' strikes such as lions, tigers and others?
If Almighty God had not oiled consistently the body and head's hair
andgiven them unbreakable form, it would be necessary that we oil them
ourselves, so that they would not break. What a situation! What kind
of people would be employed in this kind of work, all trying to
preserve personal beauty, but with what difficulty!
If Exalted God had made human body hairy like that of a sheep, what
would have happened then?
If Almighty God had not automated human hair growth appropriately and
within measure, the growing of each hair would be a task, which would
fall on our shoulders. What would have happened and whatwould we have
done under that circumstance, especially if we were unable to pull?
If Almighty God had caused the hair of the eyelid, eyebrows, and body
to consistently grow like the beard, head and other organs, would we
not be facing inconvenience pertaining to their cutting, styling and
fashioning?
If Almighty God had not endowed humans with hair on his eyelids and
eyebrows, do you know how awful the most beautiful Human would look
like?
If the hair on the eyelid or eyebrow were breakable, needing to
beoiled with regular or some standard oil, and forgotten about, they
would simply break and fall. What situation and what an appearance we
would have had!
If Almighty God had not created the inner lens in the eye that
enlarges the object's image, or if we could see only as big as the
pupils we have; how many hours would we spend rotating our head so
that we could scan a one meter spot. How could we have managed then?
What if Almighty God hadnot automated a required, consistent wetness
in our eyes, and our eyelids did not automatically blink? Could you
imagine in thatcase what would have happened and what would we have
done? Well, each individual would always have needed clean cotton and
q-tips in order to clean one's or friends each other's eyes whenever
these became unclear and dark from the environment and work. In this
case, superb eye cleaners would be needed, since inexperience could
causewounds to the eyes or blindness.
What if there were nobody available in the valleys or deserts, how
would eyes have been cleaned? Or, what if we had to wait for someone
to clean our eyes so that we could see our way. There are expert
ear-cleaners in some countries that have special dress and
instruments. But the eyes are much more indispensable and their
cleaning is more delicate.

Namely, only human offspring can build the necessary equipment
andtools from what the Almighty Sacred Being has prepared for us in
the form of natural resources left in our control. These resources
were created for our use.
First: Why is this mastery not available to such animals as elephants,
camels, horses, etc., which are many times stronger than we are?
Contemplate that if these functions were linked to the power of the
brain, then the brains of most animals would quantitatively supersede
that of humans.
Second: According to materialists, the creative power of matter can
create all varieties of animals, trees, rocks, plants and finally the
entire universe.
If this claim were true, could nature at least recreate the
generations of animals that humans or wild animals have destroyed
throughout the centuries? Scientists currently hold their skeletons,
posing likewise hundreds of other questions. No, never!
It is indisputable that if nature had the power to create things that
possessperfect order, then it should still possess it, andeven better
than the original. Rather, it shouldbe able to recreate. To shed light
on this truth, humans produce millions of something once the prototype
is there.
Nature should be able to recreate those annihilated figures were it,
as some say, the makerand producer of this universe which

miserable persons intent on political gains. Otherwise, all that
exists is a product of the imperceptible Hand of power of Exalted Him.
A minute of such study is equivalent to a year of worship according to
theMessenger, peace and blessings of God be upon him. It establishes
the shortest communication'spath of the servant to God. This is the
strongest energy for charging the battery of faith and it is better
than all other forms of unconstrained worship.

scrutinizing philosophers, on the basis of 6666 verses of the intact
Quran of Islam and on the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad , peace and
blessings of God be upon him, have proven man's body to consist of two
elements, the soul and the ego. They have considered theHeart as the
steering wheel, or computer, of the body. They have understood the
functionsof angelic inspirations and satanic temptations on the heart
by using, both, the brain's storage department and the heart's cells,
toward good or evil.
They have stated that thefindings of these truths are founded on the

unsuitable greed and taking pride in dress, appearance and lodging,

angelic power is such that the greater spiritual power one attains,
the more angelic inspirationsdominate the person. Theevidence is such
that nothing improper is ever seen from such a person'sspeech or
deeds, rather goodwill and benevolence to friends and strangers alike.
Fourth - The Devil or the Cooperator of the Ego: At the opposite end,
if the ego is fortified, all such people's sayings and actions are
based on satanic disguises, and pivot on the axis of personal gains.
The achieving of corrupt, egoistic and sensual demands becomes their
ultimate goal in life. The fulfillment of these malicious desires,
from their prospective, seemingly, cause others insignificant
distress, frustration and even devastation.
Fifth - The Heart: The location of action for both powers of the soul
and the ego, or the Angeland the Devil, respectively, is the Heart,
the Steering Wheel or Computer of the body.
Sixth - The Brain: It is the archive, or the conservatory, of the
Body's senses, and anything concerning the heart and heart's
executions. Both the Angel and the Devil use it making their good or
bad suggestions effectiveon man, intensifying their good or evil
actions.
In brief, the Body consistsof two elements-the soul and the ego, and
the twomotives of good or evil called the Angel and the Devil,
according to the Qur'anic verses and the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ,
peace and blessings of God be upon him. There are two Mechanisms of

of nutrition.
The benevolence that strengthens the soul is summarized into two elements.
1) Conditional Worship - It is undertaken by religious jurisprudence.
2) Unconditional Worship- It is defined as the remembrance of
GloriousGod and observing the world's exhibition, seeing Glorious
Artificer'sMagnificence and Perfection through artifacts, and to
translate these to faith in the heart. This should lead to estates of
humbleness and gratitude, and result in serving God's creaturesto
please Him, being intent on uplifting God's word, exercising patience
when confronted with hardships and suffering in the path to Truth, and
having resolute and devout reliance in God Almighty. This is the
fundamental nourishment of the soul.

development of spiritual powers, intellectually based on excellent and
logical philosophy. Through simple ways, these epistles will fortify
your faith and spiritualitysuch that each minute's engagement with
them isequivalent to a year of worship. An hour of it can compete with
sixty years of accepted worship, according to the sincere reporter,
peace and blessings of God be upon him.

that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad

Just entering the data of churches into a database is permissible, but
if this data that you enter serves the people who are running these
churches in their religionand falsehood, then it is not permissible
for you to do that, as this is helping in falsehood; while Allaah says
(what means): { And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not
cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allaah; indeed, Allaah is
severe in penalty. } [Quran 5:2]
You should know that whoever fears Allaah, Allaah will help him and
provide for him good sustenance and that whoever leaves something for
the Sake of Allaah [i.e. out of fearing Him], Allaah will compensate
him with something better. Allaah says (what means): { And whoever
fears Allaah - Hewill make for him a way out. And will provide for him
from where he does not expect. } [Quran 65:2-3]
Besides, the Prophet said: " You do not leave something for the Sake
of Allaah, except that Allaah brings you something better than it. "

denatured alcohol is that which is not consumable bcoz of the addition
of certain chemicals in ethanol which causes intoxicity...and so
denatured alcohol wonntcause any type of intoxicity....but u told that
if the denatured alcohol causes intoxicity prior to the addition of
chemicals then it is not permissible....how is that possibile....in
one way,if an alcohol undergoes changes and converts to another new
form,then itis permissible naa...i mean in cosmetics and all....plz
clarify my doubts....and do guide me tjhe right way

Our Fatwa regarding the denatured alcohol is clear, as we have
pointedout in it that if such alcohol is added while it is in its
state of causing intoxication, then its impurity still exists
according to the majorityof Muslim scholars. Mixing it with those
substances does not make it free from that description. Accordingly,
we have forbidden using it in cosmetics and the like for its impurity.
Actually, using it is more general than just drinking it.
It is worth noting that if the alcohol used has been transferred to
another substance prior to mixing it with other substances, in the
sense that its intoxicating characteristic is removed,then there will
be no harm in using what is mixed with it such as creams and the like.

Zakaat (the poor due): Meaning, ruling & benefits
The literal meaning of "Zakaat" is purity. Its Islamic technical
meaning designates the annual amount of wealth, food, propertyetc.
which a Muslim with the adequate means must distribute among the
rightful beneficiaries .
Zakaat is a remarkable institutionand a major pillar of Islam. Allaah,
Almighty, Says (what means): "And establish the Prayer, and pay Zakaat
(the poor due)..." [Quran, 2:43]
Moreover, Zakaat is an obligatory act because it is one of the
pillarsof Islam: The Prophet said: "Islam was built upon five
(pillars): `The testimony that none has the right to be worshipped but
Allaah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah; the establishment
of the prayer; paying the obligatory charity (Zakaat); pilgrimage to
the House (Hajj to the Ka'bah in Makkah) and fasting (the month of)
Ramadhaan."' [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
Zakaat is a small portion of the Muslim's wealth that must be given to
the poor or to other specified beneficiaries. Whoever claims that
Zakaat is not obligatory and refuses to pay it, is not a Muslim, but a
Muslim who refuses to pay Zaakat due to stinginess, while affirming
its obligation, has committed a great sin for which one will be
severely punished .
Allaah, Almighty, Says (what means): "...and as for those who hoard
treasures of gold and silver, and do not spend them forthe sake of
Allaah, announce unto them a painful torment. On the Day when that
[hoarded wealth] shall be heated in the Fire of Hell and with it will
be branded their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, (and it
will be said unto them): `This is the treasure which you hoarded for
yourselves. Now taste of whatyou used to hoard." [Quran 9: 34-35]
He, Almighty, also Says (what means): "And let not those who
covetously withhold of that which Allaah has bestowed on them of His
bounty (wealth) thinkthat it is good for them (and so they do not pay
Zakaat). No, it will be worse for them; the things which they
covetously withheld will be tied to their necks like a collar on the
Day of Resurrection..." [Quran 3:180]
There is no equivalent in any other language to the word"Zakaat" and
the meaning it conveys. It is not just a form of charity, or
alms-giving or tax or tithe. Nor, is it simply an expression of
kindness; it is all of these combined and much more. It is a duty
enjoined by Allaah anda source of purification for the individual and
society as a whole .
He, Almighty, Says (what means): "Take from their wealth 'sadaqah'
(Zakaat) in order to purify them and sanctify them with it." [Quran 9:
103]
Zakaat benefits the society in many ways. Here is an explanation of
the far-reaching effects of it :
1. Zakaat purifies the individual and his wealth. The status of his
wealth is increased with Allaah and in turn, he will be rewarded. When
a person becomes liable for paying Zakaat, a certain percentage of his
wealth should be distributed immediately in thecorrect manner, because
at that point, the wealth which is to be distributed does not belong
to him. If this wealth is retained, it spoils the status of all of his
wealth .
2. Zakaat does not only purify the property of the one who gives it,
it also purifies his heart from selfishness and greed. In return, it
purifies the heart of the recipient from envy and jealousy, and it
fosters in his heart good will and warm wishes toward thecontributor.
As a result, the rich and poor of society are bound together as a
unit, working together and helping one another .
3. Zakaat decreases the sufferingsof the needy and poor members of
society, however, those in need should not depend on it completely .
4. Zakaat is an effective means of developing the spirit of social
responsibility on the part of the well-to-do, and the feeling of
security and belonging on the part of the underprivileged .
5. Zakaat is a clear manifestation of the spiritual and humanitarian
interactions between the individual and society. It is a sound
illustration of the fact thatthough Islam does not hinder private
enterprise or condemn private possessions, it does not tolerate
selfish and greedy control of wealth and property. Itis an expression
of the general philosophy of Islam which adoptsa moderate and
effective course between the Individual and Society .
In conclusion, we mention a calling by Allaah, Almighty (what means):
"O You who believe! ShallI lead you to a bargain that will save you
from grievous suffering [in this world and in the life to come)? You
are to believe in Allaah and His Messenger and strive hard in Allaah's
cause with your possessions and your lives: this is for your own good
– if you had known it." [Qur'an, 61: 10-11]

[hoarded wealth] shall be heated in the Fire of Hell and with it will
be branded their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, (and it
will be said unto them): `This is the treasure which you hoarded for
yourselves. Now taste of whatyou used to hoard." [Quran 9: 34-35]
He, Almighty, also Says (what means): "And let not those who
covetously withhold of that which Allaah has bestowed on them of His
bounty (wealth) thinkthat it is good for them (and so they do not pay
Zakaat). No, it will be worse for them; the things which they
covetously withheld will be tied to their necks like a collar on the
Day of Resurrection..." [Quran 3:180]
There is no equivalent in any other language to the word"Zakaat" and
the meaning it conveys. It is not just a form of charity, or
alms-giving or tax or tithe. Nor, is it simply an expression of
kindness; it is all of these combined and much more. It is a duty
enjoined by Allaah anda source of purification for the individual and
society as a whole .
He, Almighty, Says (what means): "Take from their wealth 'sadaqah'
(Zakaat) in order to purify them and sanctify them with it." [Quran 9:
103]
Zakaat benefits the society in many ways. Here is an explanation of
the far-reaching effects of it :
1. Zakaat purifies the individual and his wealth. The status of his
wealth is increased with Allaah and in turn, he will be rewarded. When
a person becomes liable for paying Zakaat, a certain percentage of his
wealth should be distributed immediately in thecorrect manner, because
at that point, the wealth which is to be distributed does not belong
to him. If this wealth is retained, it spoils the status of all of his
wealth .
2. Zakaat does not only purify the property of the one who gives it,
it also purifies his heart from selfishness and greed. In return, it
purifies the heart of the recipient from envy and jealousy, and it
fosters in his heart good will and warm wishes toward thecontributor.
As a result, the rich and poor of society are bound together as a
unit, working together and helping one another .
3. Zakaat decreases the sufferingsof the needy and poor members of
society, however, those in need should not depend on it completely .
4. Zakaat is an effective means of developing the spirit of social
responsibility on the part of the well-to-do, and the feeling of
security and belonging on the part of the underprivileged .
5. Zakaat is a clear manifestation of the spiritual and humanitarian
interactions between the individual and society. It is a sound
illustration of the fact thatthough Islam does not hinder private
enterprise or condemn private possessions, it does not tolerate
selfish and greedy control of wealth and property. Itis an expression
of the general philosophy of Islam which adoptsa moderate and
effective course between the Individual and Society .
In conclusion, we mention a calling by Allaah, Almighty (what means):
"O You who believe! ShallI lead you to a bargain that will save you
from grievous suffering [in this world and in the life to come)? You
are to believe in Allaah and His Messenger and strive hard in Allaah's
cause with your possessions and your lives: this is for your own good
– if you had known it." [Qur'an, 61: 10-11]

Terrors of the Grave - II
The Messenger of Allaah said :
" I said to them [the two angels who came to him (in a dream) and
awakened him and said to him: 'Proceed!']: 'I have seen many
wonderstonight. What does all that I have seen mean?' They replied:
'We will inform you: as for the first man you came upon whose head was
being crushed with the rock, heis the one who studies the Quran and
neither recites it nor acts on its orders, and sleeps, neglecting the
obligatoryprescribed prayers. This will be done to him until the Day
of Resurrection. As for the man you came upon, whose sides of the
mouth, nose and eyes were torn off from front to back, he is the man
who goes out of his house in the morning and tells many lies which
spread all over the world.This will be done to him until the Day of
Resurrection. As for thosenaked men and women whom you saw in an
oven-like structure, they are the adulterers and the adulteresses. And
the man whom you saw swimming in the river and who was being given a
stone to swallow,he is the one who consumes Riba (usury)."
[Al-Bukhaari]

The second is the liar who promulgates false rumors among people .

Dear reader, these are but some forms of punishment of the grave
received by the person who lives in disobedience of Allaah The
Almighty, and does not follow the way of guidance .
On the other hand, those who obey Allaah The Almighty will receive
from Him a great reward and abiding bliss .
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri that he said,
"I was one of those who took part in digging the grave of Sa'd ibn
Mu'aath at Al-Baqee' cemetery. The more we dug the earth, the more it
exudedthe scent of musk until we reached the Lahd (theburying place)."
It is narrated through Muhammad ibn Shurahbeel ibn Hasanah that he
said, "A man took a handful of the earth of the grave of Sa'd and
looked at it later and behold! It was musk." [Ibn Sa'd in his
Tabaqaat]
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah that he said, the
Messenger of Allaah said:
" If a servant dies and is buried in the grave, two black and
blue-complexioned angels come to him, one called Munkar and the other
Nakeer, and ask him: "What did you say about the Prophet?" If heis a
faithful believer, he would say: "He is the Servant and Messenger
ofAllaah. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except for
Allaah, and that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger." They then say
to him: "We have indeed learnt that you said (and believed in) that."
Then, his grave would be extended for him as much as seventy by
seventy cubits, and illuminated and he would be asked to sleep. He
would say: "Let me return to my family to tellthem (about my bliss)."
But he would be asked tosleep like a bridegroom whom none awakens
butthe dearest of his family to him, until Allaah The Almighty raises
him from his place of repose. However, if he is a hypocrite, he would
say in reply to them: "I do not know. I heard the people saying
something and I repeated it after them." They would say tohim: "We
have indeed learnt that you said (and believed in) that." Then, the
earth would be askedto be welded on him, andit would do accordingly so
violently that his ribs would dislocate; and he remains in punishment
until Allaah The Almighty raises him from his lying place."
[At-Tirmithi. Al-Albaani: Saheeh in As-Silsilah As-Saheehah]
Here, the point of resemblance between the believer's sleep (in the
grave) and the sleep of a bridegroom is his living in a good manner.

grave: I ask Allaah The Almighty to make our graves a garden from the
gardens of Paradise, and not a hole from the holes of Hell-fire .

How different, dear readers, are those who are tortured from those who
are blessed in their graves!
How different, dear readers, is he who previews the Mercy of Allaah
The Almighty, fromhim who previews His Wrath in the grave.
I want you, dear reader, to imagine these scenes and envision them
with your entire soul.
Here are some images related to us by the Messenger of Allaah, , about
the torture of the grave:
The first image:
It is narrated on the authority of Samurah ibn Jundub that he
said,"The Prophet, , very often used to ask his Companions: "Did
anyoneof you see a dream (tonight)?" Thereupon, dreams would be
narrated to him by those whom Allaah The Almighty wished to narrate.
One morning, the Prophet, , said:
"Last night, two angels came to me (in a dream) and awakened me and
said to me: 'Proceed!' I set out with them and wecame across a man
lying down, and behold, another man was standing over his head,
holding a big rock. Behold, he was throwing the rock at the man's
head, crushing it. The rock rolled away and he followed it and took it
back. By the time he reached the man, his head had returned to
thenormal state. The thrower then did the same as he had done before.
I said to my two companions, 'Subhaanallaah! Who are these two
persons?' They said: 'Proceed! Proceed!'"
Imagine the scene: a manlying down, and another man standing over his
head, holding a big rock, and throwing the rock at the head of the man
lying on the ground, crushing it and then the rock rolls away. What is
astonishing is that this man with the crushed head stands up from his
place and hastens to bring back the stone to the thrower so he can to
throw at his head once again, as if he were enjoying his torture.
Whodo you think this man is? We shall know in a little while.
The second image:
"So we proceeded and came to a man lying flat on his back and another
man standing over his head with an iron hook, and behold, he continued
to put the hook in one side of the man's mouth and tear offthat side
of his face to the back (of the neck) and similarly tear off his nose
from front to back and his eye from front to back. Then he turned to
the other side of the man's face and did just ashe had done with the
first side. He hardly completed this side whenthe other side returned
to its normal state. Then he returned to repeat what he had done
before. I said to my two companions: 'Subhaanallaah! Who are these two
persons?' They said to me: 'Proceed! Proceed!'"
This image is even more odious: it is a man lying flat on his back and
another standing over his head carrying a bent-headed sharp-edged
piece of iron, similar to a fishing hook. The man who was standing
comes to one side of the face of the man who was lying down and does
an amazing thing: he tears off his face from the edge of the mouth of
that side to the back, anddoes the same with the nose and the eye. Who
do you think this man is? We shall know a while later.
The third image:
"So we proceeded and came across something like a furnace, in which
there was a great deal of noise and voices. We looked into it and
found naked men and women, and behold, a flame of fire was reaching to
them from underneath, and when it reached them, they cried out loudly.
I asked them: 'Who are these?' They said to me: 'Proceed! Proceed!'"
This is also a very terrible image of naked men and women standing in
an oven-like place and making noisy loud voices,and then suddenly,
they are exposed to flames coming from underneaththem, causing their
voices to become louder and their pain to increase. Who do you think
these are? We shall know a while later.
The fourth image:
"So we proceeded and came across a river red like blood, and behold,
inthe river there was a manswimming, and on the bank there was a man
who had collected many stones. Behold, while the other man was
swimming, he went near him. The former opened his mouth and the latter
(on the bank) threw a stone into his mouth whereupon he started
swimming again. He returned (once again), and every time he returned
to him, he opened his mouth and the other (on the bank) threw a stone
into it. I asked my two companions: 'Who are these (two) persons?'
They replied: 'Proceed! Proceed!'"
The last image is of a man swimming in a river of blood, and another
man standing on the bank of the river, carrying many stones. Every
time the swimmer comes to him, he opens his mouth to him, as if heis
inviting him to throw astone into it, and he actually throws it into

Dought & clear, - Is it mustahabb to wash the hands with soap?.
Did the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) warnagainst
germs and did he use soap or lotus leaves? Doctors nowadays tell us
that weshould wash our hands often and use soap and water. But soap at
the time of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was
not like it is now. Shouldwe follow the modern ways for protection or
is water sufficient, as it was at the time of the Prophet (blessings
and peace of Allah be upon him)? If germs are a cause of anxiety and
we have to follow what we are told, then can we use lotus leaves or
potash instead of soap, as was done at the time of the Prophet
(blessingsand peace of Allah be upon him)? Will our reward be greater
if we follow the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) in
everything, such as using potash and a little soap and water, and not
to change often or own a lot of clothes?
Praise be to Allah.
Firstly:
Islamic sharee'ah is a flexible way that is based on general
principles and holistic foundations governing human conduct. At the
same time it allows roomfor new developments that occur with changes
in time and place. For example, it does not put undue restrictions on
people with regard to customs and purely worldly actions; rather
itgives them the freedom to act in accordance with what is
appropriateto their desires and interests, and what will benefit them,
so long as any given custom is not contrary to the text of the Qur'an
or Sunnah. This is the meaning of what was affirmed by the fuqaha' and
scholars of usool when they said: The basic principle with regard to
customs is thatthey are permissible andare allowed.
Based on that, there is nothing wrong with the Muslim benefiting from
what has been invented or discovered in moderntimes, such as cars,
airplanes and electricity… and modern means of cleaning the body or
clothes.
The Muslim is not required to go back to riding camels or using the
kind of cleaning agents that were used by the Prophet (blessings and
peace of Allah be upon him), because these are not worship in which he
is required to follow the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be
upon him); rather these are customs and traditions.
Ash-Shaatibi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
With regard to customs, the Lawgiver focused onthe idea of achieving a
given purpose, not on a literal following of a shar'i text, unlike
acts of worship which must be based on a shar'i text.
End quote from al-Muwaafaqaat, 2/523
The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) encouraged
cleanliness and that which will protect good health in general terms,
and for that purpose he used the means and things that were available
at his time (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). If something
new is introduced and it leads to the same purpose (i.e., cleanliness
and maintenance of good health) without causing any harm, then there
is nothing wrong with the Muslim using it and benefiting from it.
In Islam there are many teachings that are indicative of paying
attention to cleanliness of the body, clothing and place where one is.
To confirm that, it is sufficient to note that wudoo' – which
involveswashing the hands, mouth, nose, and face – is one of the
conditions of prayer, which is the foundation of the faith, being
valid.
Using cleaning agents with water was not widely practised at the time
of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) because of
the scarcity of these cleaning agents and the scarcity of wateritself.
Yet despite that it is proven in the Sunnah that lotus leaves may be
used in some cases where ghusl is done thatrequire extra attention to
care and cleaning, such as washing the deceased prior to burial,ghusl
for a woman whose period has ended, and ghusl for thekaafir who
becomes Muslim. The fuqaha' also mentioned using saltwort as well for
the purpose of cleaning and bathing.
Saltwort (salsola) is a plant that grows in sandy ground; it or its
ash is used for washing clothes and hands.
Al-Mu'jam al-Waseet, 1/91
With regard to lotus, thisis a plant that grows on water. Its fruit is
the lotus fruit (nabq) and its leaves are used for washing. See:

It was narrated that Umm 'Atiyyah al-Ansaariyyah (may Allah be pleased
with her) said: The Messengerof Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be
upon him) entered upon us when his daughter died and said: "Wash her
three times, or five, or more than that, if you see fit, with water
and lotus leaves, and put camphor in the last time,or a little
camphor".
Narrated by al-Bukhaari,1253; Muslim, 939
An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
This indicates that it is mustahabb or encouraged to use lotus leaves
when washing the deceased. There is unanimous agreement that it is
mustahabb.
End quote from Sharh Muslim, 7/3
Ibn Rajab (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
Al-Maymooni said: I read to Ibn Hanbal: Is it acceptable for the woman
whose menses has ended to do ghusl using only water?
He dictated to me: If she cannot find anything butwater on its own,
then she should do ghusl withit. The Prophet (blessingsand peace of
Allah be upon him) said: "Your water and your lotus leaves," and this
is more than ghusl in the case of janaabah.
I said: What if she did ghusl using water only, then she found (lotus leaves)?
He said: I prefer that she should repeat it, becauseof what he said.
End quote from Fath al-Baari, 1/471-472
It was narrated from Qaasim ibn 'Aasim (may Allah be pleased with him)
that he became Muslim, and the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah
be upon him) instructed him to do ghusl using water and lotus leaves.
Narrated by at-Tirmidhi, 605. He said: It is hasan. It was classed as
saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh at-Tirmidhi.
It is obvious that using lotus leaves when doing ghusl does not come
under the heading of acts of worship; rather itis the matter of
customs that change with time and place. Whoever usesany cleansing
material inthe place of lotus leaves has fulfilled the spirit of the
Sunnah and has fulfilled the purpose for which the Messenger
(blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) instructed people to do
ghusl with lotus leaves.
On our website, in a number of answers, we have explained that it is
not mustahabb to imitate the actions of the Prophet (blessings and
peace of Allah be upon him) that he did on the grounds that theywere
customs or personal habits or preferences, and doing so does not bring
any greater reward than other customary matters.Rather reward is
attained by adhering to Sunnahs of worship and related matters.
Shaykh Dr. Muhammad al-Ashqar (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
The ruling on these matters of custom and similar issues is that
theyare indicative of something being permissible, and no more, except
in two cases:
1. Where there is a report of words enjoining or encouraging
something,in which case it seems that it is something prescribed in
Islam
2. Where it seems that it is connected to Islam by circumstantial
evidence other than words, such as placing the deceased in his grave
facing towards the qiblah. That is obviously connected to something
that is prescribed in Islam.

Secondly:
With regard to what youmentioned about not owning a lot of clothes,
what is required of the Muslim with regard to food, drink and
clothing,and the house in which he lives and the furniture on which he
sits, and other such matters, is that he should not go beyond what he
needs. So what he has of clothing and furnishings should be in
accordance with what he needs and no more than that. If it is more
than what he needs, then he comes under theheading of
extravagancewhich is condemned in Islam. Allah, may He be exalted,
says (interpretation of the meaning):
"and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allah)

As-Sa'di (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
Extravagance may mean having more than is sufficient and consuming too
much of food that is harmful to the body; or it may meangoing to
excess in luxuryin food, drink and clothing; or it may mean
overlooking what is halaal and favouring what is haraam.
"certainly He (Allah) likesnot Al-Musrifoon (those who waste by
extravagance)" means that Allah hates extravagance and it is harmful
to the individual's body and livelihood, because he may end up being
unable to meet his financial obligations. This verse commands us to
consume food and drink and it forbids us toneglect them or be
extravagant with them. End quote.

Ibn Maajah (3605) narrated that the Prophet (blessings and peace of
Allah be upon him) said: "Eat and drink, give charity and wear
clothes, so long as that does not involve any extravagance or vanity."
Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah.

and peace of Allah be upon him)? If germs are a cause of anxiety and
we have to follow what we are told, then can we use lotus leaves or
potash instead of soap, as was done at the time of the Prophet
(blessingsand peace of Allah be upon him)? Will our reward be greater
if we follow the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) in
everything, such as using potash and a little soap and water, and not
to change often or own a lot of clothes?

Firstly:
Islamic sharee'ah is a flexible way that is based on general
principles and holistic foundations governing human conduct. At the
same time it allows roomfor new developments that occur with changes
in time and place. For example, it does not put undue restrictions on
people with regard to customs and purely worldly actions; rather
itgives them the freedom to act in accordance with what is
appropriateto their desires and interests, and what will benefit them,
so long as any given custom is not contrary to the text of the Qur'an
or Sunnah. This is the meaning of what was affirmed by the fuqaha' and
scholars of usool when they said: The basic principle with regard to
customs is thatthey are permissible andare allowed.
Based on that, there is nothing wrong with the Muslim benefiting from
what has been invented or discovered in moderntimes, such as cars,
airplanes and electricity… and modern means of cleaning the body or
clothes.
The Muslim is not required to go back to riding camels or using the
kind of cleaning agents that were used by the Prophet (blessings and
peace of Allah be upon him), because these are not worship in which he
is required to follow the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be
upon him); rather these are customs and traditions.
Ash-Shaatibi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
With regard to customs, the Lawgiver focused onthe idea of achieving a
given purpose, not on a literal following of a shar'i text, unlike
acts of worship which must be based on a shar'i text.

The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) encouraged
cleanliness and that which will protect good health in general terms,
and for that purpose he used the means and things that were available
at his time (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). If something
new is introduced and it leads to the same purpose (i.e., cleanliness
and maintenance of good health) without causing any harm, then there
is nothing wrong with the Muslim using it and benefiting from it.
In Islam there are many teachings that are indicative of paying
attention to cleanliness of the body, clothing and place where one is.
To confirm that, it is sufficient to note that wudoo' – which
involveswashing the hands, mouth, nose, and face – is one of the
conditions of prayer, which is the foundation of the faith, being
valid.
Using cleaning agents with water was not widely practised at the time
of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) because of
the scarcity of these cleaning agents and the scarcity of wateritself.
Yet despite that it is proven in the Sunnah that lotus leaves may be
used in some cases where ghusl is done thatrequire extra attention to
care and cleaning, such as washing the deceased prior to burial,ghusl
for a woman whose period has ended, and ghusl for thekaafir who
becomes Muslim. The fuqaha' also mentioned using saltwort as well for
the purpose of cleaning and bathing.
Saltwort (salsola) is a plant that grows in sandy ground; it or its
ash is used for washing clothes and hands.

With regard to lotus, thisis a plant that grows on water. Its fruit is
the lotus fruit (nabq) and its leaves are used for washing. See:

It was narrated that Umm 'Atiyyah al-Ansaariyyah (may Allah be pleased
with her) said: The Messengerof Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be
upon him) entered upon us when his daughter died and said: "Wash her
three times, or five, or more than that, if you see fit, with water
and lotus leaves, and put camphor in the last time,or a little
camphor".
Narrated by al-Bukhaari,1253; Muslim, 939
An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
This indicates that it is mustahabb or encouraged to use lotus leaves
when washing the deceased. There is unanimous agreement that it is
mustahabb.

Ibn Rajab (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
Al-Maymooni said: I read to Ibn Hanbal: Is it acceptable for the woman
whose menses has ended to do ghusl using only water?
He dictated to me: If she cannot find anything butwater on its own,
then she should do ghusl withit. The Prophet (blessingsand peace of
Allah be upon him) said: "Your water and your lotus leaves," and this
is more than ghusl in the case of janaabah.
I said: What if she did ghusl using water only, then she found (lotus leaves)?
He said: I prefer that she should repeat it, becauseof what he said.

It was narrated from Qaasim ibn 'Aasim (may Allah be pleased with him)
that he became Muslim, and the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah
be upon him) instructed him to do ghusl using water and lotus leaves.
Narrated by at-Tirmidhi, 605. He said: It is hasan. It was classed as
saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh at-Tirmidhi.
It is obvious that using lotus leaves when doing ghusl does not come
under the heading of acts of worship; rather itis the matter of
customs that change with time and place. Whoever usesany cleansing
material inthe place of lotus leaves has fulfilled the spirit of the
Sunnah and has fulfilled the purpose for which the Messenger
(blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) instructed people to do
ghusl with lotus leaves.
On our website, in a number of answers, we have explained that it is
not mustahabb to imitate the actions of the Prophet (blessings and
peace of Allah be upon him) that he did on the grounds that theywere
customs or personal habits or preferences, and doing so does not bring
any greater reward than other customary matters.Rather reward is
attained by adhering to Sunnahs of worship and related matters.
Shaykh Dr. Muhammad al-Ashqar (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
The ruling on these matters of custom and similar issues is that
theyare indicative of something being permissible, and no more, except
in two cases:
1. Where there is a report of words enjoining or encouraging
something,in which case it seems that it is something prescribed in
Islam
2. Where it seems that it is connected to Islam by circumstantial
evidence other than words, such as placing the deceased in his grave
facing towards the qiblah. That is obviously connected to something
that is prescribed in Islam.

Secondly:
With regard to what youmentioned about not owning a lot of clothes,
what is required of the Muslim with regard to food, drink and
clothing,and the house in which he lives and the furniture on which he
sits, and other such matters, is that he should not go beyond what he
needs. So what he has of clothing and furnishings should be in
accordance with what he needs and no more than that. If it is more
than what he needs, then he comes under theheading of
extravagancewhich is condemned in Islam. Allah, may He be exalted,
says (interpretation of the meaning):
"and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allah)
