*- WHAT ISLAM SAYS -* - Islam is a religion of Mercy, Peace and Blessing. Its teachings emphasize kind hear tedness, help, sympathy, forgiveness, sacrifice, love and care.Qur’an, the Shari’ah and the life of our beloved Prophet (SAW) mirrors this attribute, and it should be reflected in the conduct of a Momin.Islam appreciates those who are kind to their fellow being, and dislikes them who are hard hearted, curt, and hypocrite.Recall that historical moment, when Prophet (SAW) entered Makkah as a conqueror. There was before him a multitude of surrendered enemies, former oppressors and persecutors, who had evicted the Muslims from their homes, deprived them of their belongings, humiliated and intimidated Prophet (SAW) hatched schemes for his murder and tortured and killed his companions. But Prophet (SAW) displayed his usual magnanimity, generosity, and kind heartedness by forgiving all of them and declaring general amnesty...Subhanallah. May Allah help us tailor our life according to the teachings of Islam. (Aameen)./-

Acts of worship which are prescribed on Fridays

I know that Friday has many virtues. Could you tell me some acts of worship that I can do on this day?. Praise be to Allaah. Yes, Friday is a good day;there are many ahaadeeth which speak of its virtues. See Question no. 9211 . There are many acts of worship which are prescribed for the Muslim to do on this day. These include: 1 – Salaat al-Jumu’ah (Friday prayer) Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salaah (prayer) on Friday (Jumu‘ah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allaah [Jumu‘ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salaah (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing). That is better for you if you did but know!” [al-Jumu’ah 62:9] Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in Zaad al-Ma’aad (1/376): Friday prayer is one of the most important obligations in Islam, and one of the greatest gatherings of the Muslims. Gathering on Friday is more importantand more obligatory than any other gathering apart from ‘Arafah. Whoever neglects it, Allaah will place a seal on his heart. It was narrated from Abu’l-Ja’d al-Damari – who was a companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) – that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever neglects threeJumu’ahs, Allaah will place a seal on his heart.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 1052; classed assaheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 928 It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar and Abu Hurayrah that they heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say on the minbar: “Let people stop neglecting Jumu’ah, or Allaah will place a seal on their hearts, then they will be among those who are neglectful.” Narrated by Muslim, 865. 2 – Making a lot of du’aa’. On this day there is a time when a person’s Lord will answer his du’aa’ – by Allaah’s leave. It was narrated from AbuHurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) mentioned Friday and said: “On this day there is a time when no Muslim stands and prays, asking Allaah for something, but Allaah will grant him it” – and he gestured with his hands to indicate how short that time is. Narrated by al-Bukhaari,893; Muslim, 852 3 – Reading Soorat al-Kahf. It was narrated from AbuSa’eed al-Khduri that theProphet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on Friday, he willbe illuminated with lightbetween the two Fridays.” Narrated by al-Haakim; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 836 4 – Sending a lot of blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). It was narrated from Aws ibn Aws that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The best of your days is Friday. On that day Adam(peace be upon him) was created; on that dayhe died; on that day the Trumpet will be blown; and on that day all of creation will swoon. So send a great deal of blessings upon me, for your blessings will be shown to me.” They said,“O Messenger of Allaah, how will our blessings upon you be shown to you when you have turned to dust?” He said, “Allaah has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of the Prophets, peace be uponthem.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 1047; classed assaheeh by Ibn al-Qayyim in his comments on Sunan Abi Dawood, 4/273; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 925. He said in ‘Awn al-Ma’bood: Friday is singled out because it is the best of days and the chosen day.So there is an advantageto sending blessings upon him on that day that is not present on any other day. Along with these virtues and acts of worship, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade singling out Friday for fasting, or singling out the night of Friday for doing acts of worship that are not narrated in sharee’ah. It was narrated from AbuHurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Do not single out the night of Friday for qiyaam al-layl,and do not single out the day of Friday for fasting, unless that is part of the habitual fasting of any one of you.” (Narrated by Muslim, 1144). Al-San’aani said in Subul al-Salaam: This hadeeth indicates that it is haraam to single out the night of Friday for worship or reading Qur’aan that is not one’s regular custom, apart from that which is indicated in thetexts, such as reading Soorat al-Kahf. Al-Nawawi said: This hadeeth clearly states that it is forbiddento single out the night ofFriday for prayer or the day of Friday for fasting. It is agreed (among the scholars) that this is makrooh. He also said: The scholars said that the reason why it is forbidden to single out Friday for fasting is that Friday is a day of du’aa’, dhikr and worship, such as ghusl, going early to the prayer, waiting for the prayer, listening to the khutbah and recitinga lot of dhikr afterwards, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Then when the (Jumu‘ah) Salaah (prayer) is ended, you may disperse through the land, and seek the Bounty of Allaah (by working), and remember Allaah much” [al-Jumu’ah 62:10] And there are other acts of worship to be done on this day. So it is preferable not to fast then, as this will help a person to perform these duties in an energetic manner and enjoy them without feeling bored ortired. This is like the pilgrim on the day of ‘Arafah in ‘Arafah, because the Sunnah is for him not to fast on that day for the same reason… This is the reason for not allowing singling out Friday for fasting. And it was said that the reason is so thatpeople will not go to extremes in venerating it as happened in the case of Saturday. But thisview is weak, because on that day we offer Jumu’ah prayer and do other acts of worship which are a kind of veneration. And it was said that the reason for its prohibition is so that people would not think that this was obligatory. This is also a weak view because it is encouragedto fast on Mondays and there was no fear that anyone would think it was obligatory. No attention should be paidto this far-fetched view. The same argument is applicable in the case of fasting the day of ‘Arafah and the day of ‘Ashoora’, etc. The correct view is that which we have stated above. And Allaah knows best.

An extract from Az-ZaujusSalih (The Pious Husband)by Mujlisul Ulama of
South Africa
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "The noblest of you are those who
are the noblest to their families…"
"Verily, among the most perfect Believers in Iman are those who are
best incharacter and kindest to their wives."
Even lifting a morsel of food to the mouth of the wife has been given
the significance of ibadat. It is an act of love by which the husband
derives thawab (reward in the Hereafter).
It was part of the Uswah Hasanah (Noble character) of the Prophetصلى
الله عليه وسلم to engage in light hearted talk with his wives. Hadhrat
Abu Hurairah رضى الله تعالى عنه said:
Allah loves a man who caresses his wife. Both of them are awarded
thawab because of this loving attitude and their rizq (earning) is
increased."
A man is rewarded for even a drink of water he presents to his wife.
According to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم the mercy of Allah Ta'ala
cascades on a couple when the husband glances at his wife with love
and pleasure and she returns his glance with love and pleasure.
When a husband clasps the hand of his wife withlove their sins fall
from the gaps between their clasped fingers. Even mutual love between
husband and wives serve as a kaffara (expiation) for sins. The Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
"When a man enters his home cheerfully, Allah creates, as a result of
his happy attitude, an angel who engages in istighfar (prayers of
forgiveness) on behalf of the man until the day of Qiyamah."
May Allah give us the ability to act upon the above, ameen.
Al-Mar'atus Salihah (The Pious Wife) is also published by Mujlisul
Ulama, both books can befound in the English language and have been
described as the islamic prescription for a happy and successful
marriage , the blessings and rewards of which extend into even the
Hereafter.

The fruits of Honesty

An emperor in the Far East was growing old andknew it was time to
choose his successor. Instead of choosing one of his assistants or his
children, he decided something different. He called young people in
the kingdom together one day. He said, "It is time for me to step
downand choose the next emperor. I have decided to choose one of you."
The kids were shocked! But the emperor continued. "I am going togive
each one of you a seed today. One very special seed. I want you to
plant the seed, water it and come back here one year from today
withwhat you have grown from this one seed. I will then judge the
plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next emperor!"
One boy named Ling was there that day and he, like the others,
received a seed. He went home and excitedly told his mother the story.
She helped him get a pot andplanting soil, and he planted the seed and
watered it carefully. Every day he would water it and watch to seeif
it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other youths began
to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow.
Ling kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew. Three weeks, 4
weeks, 5 weeks went by. Still nothing. By now, others were talking
about their plants but Ling didn't have a plant, and he felt like a
failure . Six months went by–still nothing in Ling's pot. He just knew
he had killed his seed.
Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Ling
didn't say anything to his friends , however. He just kept waiting for
his seed to grow.
A year finally went by and all the youths of the kingdom brought their
plants to the emperor forinspection. Ling told his mother that he
wasn't going to take an empty pot. But honest about what happened,
Ling felt sick to his stomach, but he knew his mother was right. He
took his empty pot to the palace. When Ling arrived, he was amazed at
the variety of plants grown by the other youths. They were
beautiful–in all shapes and sizes. Ling put his empty pot on the floor
and many of the other kinds laughed at him. A few felt sorry for him
andjust said, "Hey nice try."
When the emperor arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted the young
people. Ling just tried to hide in the back. "My, what great plants,
trees and flowers you have grown," said the emperor. "Today, one of
you will be appointed the next emperor!" All of a sudden, the emperor
spotted Ling at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered
his guards to bring him to the front. Ling was terrified. "The emperor
knows I'm a failure! Maybe he will have me killed!"
When Ling got to the front, the Emperor asked his name. "My name is
Ling," he replied. All the kids were laughing and making fun of him.
The emperor asked everyone to quiet down. He lookedat Ling, and then
announced to the crowd,"Behold your new emperor! His name is Ling!"
Ling couldn't believe it. Ling couldn't even grow his seed. How could
he be the new emperor? Then the emperor said, "One year ago today, I
gave everyone here a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water
it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds
which would not grow. All of you, except Ling, have brought me trees
and plants and flowers. Whenyou found that the seed would not grow,
you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Ling was the only
one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it.
Therefore, he is the one who will be the new emperor!"
If you plant honesty, You will reap trust
If you plant goodness, You will reap friends
If you plant humility, You will reap greatness
If you plant perseverance, You will reap victory
If you plant consideration, You will reap harmony
If you plant hard work, You will reap success
If you plant forgiveness, You will reap reconciliation
If you plant openness, You will reap intimacy
If you plant patience, Youwill reap improvements
If you plant faith, You willreap miracles
But
If you plant dishonesty, You will reap distrust
If you plant selfishness, You will reap loneliness
If you plant pride, You will reap destruction
If you plant envy, You willreap trouble
If you plant laziness, You will reap stagnation
If you plant bitterness, You will reap isolation
If you plant greed, You will reap loss
If you plant gossip, You will reap enemies
If you plant worries, You will reap wrinkles
If you plant sin, You will reap guilt
So be careful what you plant now, It will determine what you will reap
tomorrow,The seedsyou now scatter, Will make life worse or better, your
life or the ones who will come after. Yes, someday, you will enjoy the
fruits,Or you will pay for the choices you plant today.

The story of Prophet Saalih – I

After the destruction of 'Aad, the people of Prophet Houd Thamood, the
people of Prophet Saalih succeeded them in power and glory. They, like
their predecessors, fell to idol-worshipping. As their material wealth
increased so, too, did their evil ways, while their virtue decreased.
Like the people of 'Aad, they erected huge buildings on the plains and
hewed beautiful homes out of the hills. Tyranny and oppression became
prevalent as evil men ruled the land.
Allaah, the Exalted, sent unto them His Prophet Saalih a man from
among them. His full name was Saalih Ibn Ubeid Ibn Maseh Ibn Ubeid Ibn
Hader Ibn Thamood Ibn Ather Ibn Eram, Ibn Noah (Nooh ). He called his
people to worship Allaah alone, and not to associate any partners with
Him. While some of them believed him, the majority of themdisbelieved
and harmed him by both words and deeds. Allaah Said in the Quran (what
means): "And to Thamood [We sent] their brother Saalih. He said, 'O my
people, worship Allaah; you have no deity other than Him...' " [Quran
11:61]
Prophet Saalih was known for his wisdom, purity and goodness and had
been greatly respected by his people before Allaah's revelationcame to
him. Almighty Allaah mentions what his people said to him in the
Quranic verses (which mean): "O Saalih, you were among us a man of
promise before this. Do you forbid us to worship what our fathers
worshipped? And indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in
disquieting doubt." [Quran 11:62]
They merely wanted to worship the same gods as their fathers had, with
no reason, no proof, and no thought. The proof of Prophet Saalih's
message was evident, but despite this, it was obvious that most of his
people did not believe him. They doubted his words, thinking he was
charmed, and they saw that he would not stop preaching. Fearing that
his followers would increase in number, they tried to put him off by
assigning him an important task; to prove that he was a messenger of
Allaah by performing amiracle. They asked him to let a unique
she-camel emerge from the mountains.
Allaah Almighty granted Prophet Saalih this miracle and a huge, unique
she-camel appeared from the direction of the mountain. The Quranic
commentators said that the people of Thamood gathered on a certain day
at their meeting place, and prophet Saalih came and addressed them to
believe in Allaah, reminding them of the favors Allaah had grantedthem.
Then, pointing at a rock, they demanded: "Ask your Lord to make a
she-camel, which must be10 months pregnant, tall and attractive, issue
fromthe rock for us." Prophet Saalih replied: "Look now! If Allaah
sends you what you have requested, just as you have described, will
you believe in that which I have come to you with and have faith in
the message I have been sentwith?" They answered: "Yes." So he took a
vow from them on this, and then prayed to Allaah, The Almighty, to
grant their request. Allaah ordered the distant rock to split asunder,
to bring forth a great ten-month pregnant she-camel. When their eyes
set on it,they were amazed. They saw a great thing, a wonderful sight,
a dazzling power and clearevidence!
A number of Prophet Saalih's people believed, yet most of them
continued in their disbelief, stubbornness, and going astray. Allaah,
the Almighty, said in the Noble Quran (what means): "And We gave
Thamood the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her." [Quran
17:59] And (what means): "And certainly did the companions of al-Hijr
(628) [i.e. the Thamood] deny the messengers." [Quran 15:80-81]
There are a number of accounts by Quranic commentators of this
she-camel and its miraculous nature. It wassaid that the she-camel was
miraculous because a rock in the mountain split open and it came forth
from it, followed byits young offspring. Otheraccounts said that the
she-camel used to drink all the water in the wells in one day, and no
other animals could approach the water. Still others claimed that the
she-camel produced milk sufficient for all the people to drink, on the
same day that it drank allthe water, leaving none for them.
At first, the people of Thamood were greatly surprised when the
she-camel emerged from the mountain rocks. It was a blessed beast, and
its milk sufficient for thousands of men, women and children. If
itslept in a place that placewas abandoned by other animals. Thus it
was obvious that is was not an ordinary she-camel, but one of Allaah's
signs.
Their hatred of Prophet Saalih turned towardsthe blessed she-camel and
became centered on it. A conspiracy started to be hatched against the
miraculous beast by the disbelievers, and they secretly plotted
against it.
Prophet Saalih feared that they might kill her, so he warned them
saying (what means): "And O my people, this is the she-camel of Allaah
— [she is] to you a sign. So let her feed upon Allaah's earth and do
not touch her with harm, or you will be taken by an impending
punishment. " [Quran 11:64]
For a while, Prophet Saalih's people let the camel graze and drink
freely, but in their hearts they hated it. However, the miraculous
appearance of the unique she-camel caused many to become his
followers, and they clungto their belief in Allaah.
The disbelievers now began complaining that this huge she-camel with
its unusual qualities drank most of the water and frightened their
cattle.
They laid a plot to kill thebeast, and sought the help of their women
folk to tempt the men to carryout their commands. A lady named Saduq
Bint Mahya, who was from a rich and noble family, offered herself to a
young man named Masrai Ibn Mahraj on condition that he hamstrings the
she-camel. Aneezah, an old woman, offered one of her daughters to a
young man, Qudaar Ibn Saluf, in return for killingthe she-camel.
Naturally, these young men were tempted and set about finding seven
others to assist them.

The story of Prophet Loot

Prophet Luut left Egypt, accompanied by his uncle Ibraaheem and headed
to the city of Sodom in Palestine, which was on the western shore of
the Dead Sea.
This city was filled with evil. Its residents waylaid, robbed and
killed travellers. Another common evil among them was that their men
used to have sex with men instead of women. Thisunnatural act later
became known as sodomy, after the city of Sodom . It was practiced
openly and unashamedly.
It was at the height of these crimes and sins that Allaah revealed to
Prophet Luut that he should summon the people to give up their
indecent behaviour, but their immoral habits were so deeply ingrained
that they were deaf to Luut's preaching. Addicted to their unnatural
desires, they refused toaccept the call to repentance, even when Luut
warned them of Allaah's punishment. Instead, they threatened to drive
him out of the city if he continued preaching against their evil
habits.
Allaah Almighty revealed (what means): "The people of Luut denied the
messengers. When their brother Luut said to them: 'Will you not fear
Allaah? Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. So fear Allaah
and obey me. And I do not ask you forit any payment. My payment is
only from the Lord of the worlds. Do you approach males among the
worlds. And leave what your Lord has created for you as mates? But you
are a people transgressing.' They said: 'If you do not desist, O Luut,
you will surely be of those evicted.' He said: 'Indeed, I am, toward
your deed, of those who detest [it]. MyLord! Save me and my family
from[the consequence of] what they do.' So We saved him and his
family, all. Except an old woman [i.e., the wife of Luut] among those
who remained behind." [Quran: 26:160-171]
The sinful actions of Prophet Luut's people saddened his heart.Their
abominable reputation spread throughout the land, while he continued
to struggle against them. As the years passed, he persisted in his
mission, but to no avail. No one responded to his call and believed
except for the members of his family; even in his household, not all
the members believed: Luut's wife was a disbeliever.
If home is the place of comfort and rest, then Luut found none, for he
was tormented bothwithin and outside his home. His life was continuous
agony as he suffered greatly, but he remainedpatient and steadfast as
a Messenger to his people. Instead of heeding to him, they belittled
his message, and mockingly challenged him, saying (what means):
"…'Bring us the punishment of Allaah, if you should be of the
truthful!" [Quran: 29:29]
Overwhelmed with despair, Luut prayed to Allaah to grant him victory
and to destroy the corrupt. Allaah Almighty, therefore, sent three
angels in the guise of young handsome men in answer to his prayer.
Theyreached the walls of the town in the afternoon. The first person
who caught sight of them was Luut's daughter while she was filling her
jug with water from the river. When she saw them, she was stunned that
there couldbe men of such magnificent beauty on earth.
One of the three men (angels) asked her: "O maiden! Is there a place to rest?"
Remembering the evil character of her people, she replied: "Stay here
and do not enter the town until I inform my father and return."
Leaving her jug by the river, she swiftly ran home.
"O father!" she cried. "You are wanted by young men at the town gate
and I have never before seen the like of their faces!"
Luut felt distressed as he quickly ran to his guests.
They visited him at home as guests. After ushering them in hospitably,
he asked them where they came from and where they were going.
They did not reply to his questions. Instead they asked if he could
host them. He began talking with them and impressedupon them the
repulsive nature of his people. Luut was filled with turmoil; he
wanted to convince his guests without offending them, not to spend
thenight there, yet at the same time he wanted to extend to them
theexpected hospitality normally accorded to guests. In vain, he tried
to make them understand the perilous situation. At last, therefore, he
requested them to wait until nightfall, for then no one would see
them.
When darkness shrouded the town, Luut escorted his guests to his home.
No one was aware of their presence. However, as soon as Luut's wife
saw them, she slipped out of the house quietly so that no one noticed
her. Quickly, she ran to her people with the news and spread it to all
the inhabitants like wildfire. The people rushed towards Luut quickly
and excitedly.
When Luut saw the mob approaching his house, he shut the door, but
they kept on banging on it. He pleaded with them to leave the visitors
alone and fear Allaah's punishment. He urged them to seek sexual
fulfilment with their wives, for that is what Allaah had made lawful.
Luut's people waited until he hadfinished his short sermon, and then
they roared with laughter. Blinded by lust, they broke down the door.
Luut became very angry, but he stood powerless before these violent
people. He felt powerless to prevent the abuse of his guests, but he
firmly continued to plead with the mob.
At that terrible moment, he wished he had the power to pushthem away
from his guests. Seeing him in a state of helplessness and grief, the
guestssaid to him: "Do not be anxious or frightened, for we are
angels, and these people will not harm you."
On hearing this, the mob was terrified and fled from Luut's house,
hurling threats at him as they left. The angels warned Prophet Luut to
leave his house before sunrise, taking withhim all his family, except
his wife.
Allaah had decreed that the city of Sodom should perish. An earthquake
rocked the town. It was as if a mighty power had lifted the entire
city and flung it down in one jolt. A storm of stones then rained on
the city. Everyone and everything was destroyed, including Luut's
wife.
The Holy Quran recorded this event; it states (what means): "SoWe
saved him and his family, all. Except an old woman [his wife] among
those who remained behind. Then We destroyed the others. And We rained
upon them a rain [of stones], and evil was the rain of those who were
warned. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be
believers. And indeed, your Lord –He is the Exalted in Might, the
Merciful." [Quran: 26:170-175]
Thus, the people of Luut were destroyed and their towns and names have
been erased from the face of the earth.

Muadh ibn Jabal - Biographies of the Companions (Sahabah)

Muadh ibn Jabal was a young man growing up in Yathrib as the light of
guidance and truth began to spread over the Arabian peninsula. He was
a handsome and imposing character with black eyes and curly hair and
immediately impressed whoever he met. He was already distinguished for
the sharpness of his intelligence among young men of his own age.
The young Muadh became a Muslim at the hands of Musab ibn Umayr, the
daiy (missionary) whom the Prophet had sent to Yathrib before the
hijrah. Muadh was among the seventy-two Yathribites who journeyed to
Makkah, one year before the hijrah, and met the Prophet at his house
and later again in the valley of Mina, outside Makkah, at Aqabah. Here
the famous second Aqabah Pledge was made at which the new Muslims of
Yathrib, including some women, vowed to support and defend the Prophet
at any cost. Muadh was among those who enthusiastically clasped the
hands of the blessed Prophet then and pledged allegiance to him.
As soon as Muadh returned to Madinah from Makkah, he and a few others
of his age formed a group to remove and destroy idols from the houses
of the mushrikeen in Yathrib. One of the effects of this campaign
wasthat a prominent man of the city, Amr ibn al-Jumuh, became aMuslim.
When the noble Prophet reachedMadinah, Muadh ibn Jabal stayedin his
company as much as possible. He studied the Quran and the laws of
Islam until he became one of the most well-versed of all the
companions in the religion of Islam.
Wherever Muadh went, people would refer to him for legal judgments on
matters over which they differed. This is not strange since he was
brought upin the school of the Prophet himself and learnt as much as
hecould from him. He was the bestpupil of the best teacher. His
knowledge bore the stamp of authenticity. The best certificate that he
could have received came from the Prophet himself when he said: "The
most knowledgeable of my ummah in matters of Halal and haram is Muadh
ibn Jabal."
One of the greatest of Muadhs contributions to the ummah of Muhammad
was that he was one of the group of six who collected the Quran during
the lifetime of the Prophet, peace beupon him. Whenever a group of
companions met and Muadh was among them, they would look at him with
awe and respect on account of his knowledge. The Prophet and his two
Khalitahs after him placed this unique gift and power in the service
of Islam .
After the liberation of Makkah, the Quraysh became Muslims en masse.
The Prophet immediatelysaw the need of the new Muslims for teachers to
instruct them in the fundamentals of Islam and to make them truly
understand the spirit and letter of its laws. He appointed Attab ibn
Usay as his deputy in Makkahand he asked Muadh ibn Jabal to stay with
him and teach people the Quran and instruct them in the religion.
Sometime after the Prophet had returned to Madinah, messengers of the
kings of Yemen came to him announcing that they and the people of
Yemen had become Muslims. They requested that some teachers should be
with them toteach Islam to the people. For this task the Prophet
commissioned a group of competent duat (missionaries) and made Muadh
ibn Jabal their amir. He then put the following question to Muadh:
"According to what will you judge?"
"According to the Book of God," replied Muadh.
"And if you find nothing therein?"
"According to the Sunnah of the Prophet of God."
"And if you find nothing therein?"
"Then I will exert myself (exercise ijtihad) to form my own judgment."
The Prophet was pleased with this reply and said: "Praise be to God
Who has guided the messenger of the Prophet to that which pleases the
Prophet."
The Prophet personally bade farewell to this mission of guidance and
light and walked for some distance alongside Muadh as he rode out of
the city. Finally he said to him:
"O Muadh, perhaps you shall not meet me again after this year. Perhaps
when you return you shall see only my mosque and my grave." Muadh
wept. Those with him wept too. A feeling of sadness and desolation
overtookhim as he parted from his beloved Prophet, peace and blessings
of God be on him.
The Prophet's premonition was correct. The eyes of Muadh neverbeheld
the Prophet after that moment. The Prophet died before Muadh returned
from theYemen. There is no doubt that Muadh wept when he returned to
Madinah and found there wasno longer the blessed company of the
Prophet.
During the caliphate of Umar, Muadh was sent to the Banu Kilab to
apportion their stipendsand to distribute the sadaqah of their richer
folk among the poor. When he had done his duty, he returned to his wife
with his saddle blanket around his neck, empty handed, and she asked
him:
"Where are the gifts which commissioners return with for their
families?" "I had an alert Supervisor who was checking over me," he
replied. "You were a trusted person with the messenger of God and with
Abu Bakr. Then Umar came and he sent a supervisor with you to check on
you!' she exclaimed. She went on to talk about this to the women of
Umar's household and complained to them about it. The complaint
eventually reached Umar, so he summoned Muadh and said:
"Did I send a supervisor with youto check on you?"
"No, Amir al-Mumineen," he said,"But that was the only reason I could
find to give her." Umar laughed and then gave him a gift, saying, "I
hope this pleases you."
Also during the caliphate of Umar, the governor of Syria, Yazid ibn
Abi Sufyan sent a message saying:
"O Amir al-Mumineen! The people of Syria are many. They fill the
towns. They need people to teach them the Quran and instruct them in
the religion."
Umar thereupon summoned fivepersons who had collected the Quran in the
lifetime of the Prophet, peace be upon him. They were Muadh ibn Jabal,
Ubadah ibn asSamit, Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, Ubayy ibn Kab and
AbuadDardaa. He said to them:
"Your brothers in Syria have asked me to help them by sending those
who can teach them the Quran and instruct them in the religion. Please
appoint three among you for this task and may God bless you.I can
select three of you myself ifyou do not want to put the matter to the
vote."
"Why should we vote?" they asked. "Abu Ayyub is quite old and Ubayy is
a sick man. That leaves three of us." "All three of you go to Homs
first of all. If youare satisfied with the condition of the people
there, one of you should stay there, another should go to Damascus and
the other to Palestine."
So it was that Ubadah ibn as-Samit was left at Homs, Abu ad-Dardaa
went to Damascus and Muadh went to Palestine. There Muadh fell ill
with an infectious disease. As he was near to death, he turned in the
direction of the Kabah and repeated this refrain: "Welcome Death,
Welcome. A visitor has come after a long absence . . ." And looking up
to heaven, he said: "O Lord, You know that I did not desire the world
and to prolong my stay in it . . . O Lord, accept my soul with
goodness as you would accept a believing soul..."
He then passed away, far from his family and his clan, a daiy in the
service of God and a muhajir in His path.

True stories - For you my love...

Hi… I know that you will never actually read this letter and this is
not my aim here. It's just that yesterday I realized I will never be
beside you any more.
I will never kiss the lips that I love so much, I'll never caress your
hair as I used to. Yes, my whole world collapsed yesterday. Because my
whole world was you……
I can't…, oh God, I still can't accept the thought that you won't be
next tome. I know that I made mistakes. I did awfully many foolish
things. I shouldn't have gone away. I shouldn't have left you – the
man of my life, just when I've found you. I wanted to earn that money,
so that it would be easier…or I thought it would be…..If Ihad known
then how wrong I was, if I had realized that money wasn't everything.
Moneycan't make me happy when you are not beside me.
I lost you….I just can't believe that you are no longer part of my
life, that you are no longer "my man", that we won't stick the so
dreamt "babyfactory" on the bedroom door.
You know…this time I was determined to stop. Ihad decided for sure to
come back and start leading a life in my own country and I wanted to
make it with you. When I planned on returning I told everybody that
I'm trying to get back the "man of my life" ….but it wasn't that
simple.
I couln't understand you before, now you can't understand me. You
couldn't understand that I wanted to abandon everything that I had
justto be with you. I was ready to leave my friends, the life in my
town, the great job that Iwill never have again – nothing interested
me more than being with you. You told me that youweren't ready, not at
thatmoment. But you were before. Why the hell didn't you just tell me
that you don't love me as you used to, that you are afraid to run the
risk of being with me again, that I don't have the right to rush into
your life every time that the impulse takes me. Or that you are
already tired of us playing cat and dog…..although you still love me.
I know it because I saw it in your eyes. They always give you away.
You know, what hurt me the most was that you didn't have the courage
to tell me that you are afraid and it's easier to lead your apathetic
life hiding behind work. Or you no longer love me, orat least not as
much as before. I would have understood. We are grown up people after
all….
I will always love you but I'll never let you in my lifeagain.
I don't know how I'll live without you…..I'm going to learn this from
now on. I wish you all the happiness with her. I hope she can give you
at least half of what I gave you. Although, no one will love you the
way I did. As trivial as it may sound. I thank you, you who read this.
I just wanted to unburden my heart somewhere nobody will recognize me.
I want to give you a piece of advice, the one that my father kept
telling me for a long time:"It's better to learn from the mistakes of
others, not from your own."
Do not kill your love! Do not think that you can change it for money,
shiny cars, or companies that are more important than your own life.
Neverleave the person you love, never betray him/her, fight for
his/herlove.
LOVE IS EVERYTHING PEOPLE! PLEASE DON'T LOOSE IT!!!
FIGHT TOOTH AND NAIL, BUT NEVER LOOSE IT!

Who has more right to her son – her or her husband whom she suspects of witchcraft? What are the signs of thepractitioner of witchcraft?

My son is nearly 11 years old. He has become very aggressive; he does
not respect me and shouts atme. Sometimes even he uses his hands
without any justifications, after his father gave him a computer as a
gift. His father deals by sihr, I do not know if he is sahir himself
or not, Allah alone knows. He wants to take my son from me (as we are
divorced).
How can I protect my son and myself? What can I do so that my son
returns to how he was before? How can I know the reality of his
father? In the case that I make sure he is a sahir and wants to harm
me and my son, am I permitted to not let him see our son if he wanted
to?.
Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly:
Islam enjoins parents to take care of their children and raise them
well. Children will grow up on what they hear, read and see in their
home, on the streets andin school, and whatever faults happen in their
upbringing are because of faults in one or all of these aspects.
What has happened with your son, of his badattitude towards you, may
because of what he has seen and heard at home of the problems between
you and your husband, which led to divorce, or it may be because of
the influence of what he has seen and read on the computer, or it may
be the result ofwitchcraft done against him by his father in order to
take him from you. Any of these things is possible, or it may be all
of these reasons combined that has lead to this bad behaviour of your
son towards you.
Whatever the case, you have to set things straight by looking for the
causes that have led to these problems, so that you can deal with the
matter by dealing with the cause. If it is because of your problems
with his father, then you must make him understand the reality of the
situation and what happened [?} between you, in a way that is
appropriate to his age and level of understanding. If the cause is
what he hears, watches and sees on the computer then you must keep an
eye on whatever he is looking at, and it is essential to teach him to
make good use of the computer. If he does not respond, then you can
forbid him to use it altogether. If the cause is his father doing
witchcraft on him, then you can start to remedy it by using
shar'iruqyahs from the Qur'aan and saheeh dhikrs of the Prophet (peace
and blessings of Allaah be upon him). There is no reason why you
shouldn't take him to someone whose religious commitment you trust, to
treat him in the shar'i manner for such cases.
Secondly:
You can find out whether his father is really doing sihr (witchcraft)
by finding out how he treats othersor what he really says to those who
visit him and consult him.
Some of the scholars have mentioned the signs of the saahir
(practitioner of witchcraft) by means of which anyone can discern the
saahir from those who are good andrighteous. These signs are:
1. He asks the sick person for his mother's name, and some
personal possession of the one for whom treatment is sought, such as
his hair or clothing.
2. He mumbles words that have no meaning and that the listener
cannot understand. The muttering may be calls to the jinn or devils to
come and serve him.
3. Another sign is that the saahir does not attend Jumu'ah prayer
or the five daily prayers in the mosque.
4. He is dishevelled and smells bad, and he likes being in the
dark and on his own.
5. He gives the sick person an amulet ("hijab") containing some
mumbo-jumbo, squares or numbers.
To find out the truth, he should have all or some of the
characteristics. Thus you will know the truth about him. It should be
noted that you may be exaggerating in suspecting him of witchcraft.
You have to be fair in judging him, and fear Allaah before making
accusations and claims of which he is innocent.
But so long as you have separated from him, we do not think that you
should concern yourself too much with your ex-husband and whether he
is a saahir ornot; rather what you should do is focus on how to
protect yourself and your son, and how to fulfil your duty of raising
this boy.
Thirdly:
With regard to custody of the child, it is known that the purpose of
custody is to protect andtake care of the child. Hence a person's
right tocustody is waived if he isimmoral or corrupt, or if he
neglects him, or if he travels a great deal, which would harm the
child's interests.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him):
It should be noted that there is no text which gives precedence to
either parent in general terms, or chooses one of the parents in all
cases. The scholars are unanimously agreed that neither of them is
specified in all cases, rather when there is transgression of the
limits or neglect, precedence is not to be given to the one who will
be like that (i.e., the parent who will transgress the limits or be
neglectful) over the one who is just and good and will do what
isrequired.
Majmoo' al-Fataawa (34/132).
It should be noted that the period of custody extends until the child
reaches the age of discernment and independence, i.e., custody lasts
until the child is able to discern and is independent of his guardian,
in the sense that he can eat and drink by himself, and clean himself
after going to the toilet by himself, and so on.
As he has reached the age of 11, he should be given the choice of
living with his father or with you, so long as the choice is made by
him freely, without any pressure or compulsion, and so long as the
reason for his choice is not that he will never betold to pray or obey
Allaah, or to do anythingthat is in his religious or worldly
interests, because his choice in this case would be harmful to him.
Many children care only about choosing the one who will spoil them the
most or give them the toys and games that they want, so in that case
he should not be allowed tohave what he wants.
If it is proven that his father is engaging in witchcraft, then it is
not permissible for him to take his son, rather he should be withheld
fromhim until he repents sincerely to Allaah.
If it is not proven that the father is engaging inwitchcraft, then the
parents should cooperate in raising their son, and pay attention to
what is in his best interests, so thattheir conflict will not be a
cause of the children failing and being lost.
See also the answers to questions no. 8189 and 20705 and 21516 .
We ask Allaah to set all your affairs straight and to guide your son
to thatwhich our Lord loves and is pleased with, and to set his father
straight and protect his religious commitment.
And Allaah knows best.

She went to a fortunate teller to find out who the thief was and he accused her brother

A box was stolen from my sister and her husband and children in which
there was a lot of money. My sister's husband was broken-hearted and
the people told him about a Shaykh who was said to be able to relieve
distress and find lost items by Allaah'sLeave. He (that Shaykh) asked
about me, with a cigarette in his hand, and he said to me: I saw you
last night, your name is So and so, and you are the thief. This is my
work and my source of income, and I will get 25 percent of the stolen
goods. Tell me and admitthat you are the only thief that everyone is
looking for. There was a lengthy discussion between me and him, and I
swore by Allaah that I was innocent of what he said, and Allaah is
witness to what I said. Please advise me, may Allaah reward you,
please relieve me of the wrong and claims that are surrounding me. I
am afraid of turmoil among my relatives because injustice leads to a
lot of bas consequences.
Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly:
The one who claims to know where stolen things are and who the thieves
are by means of secret things that the people do not know is one of
two things: a fortune-teller to whom the devils come, or a liar who
makes the people think that he knows these things in order to consume
their wealth unlawfully.
Whatever the case, it is not permissible to go to these people and to
ask them or believe them, no matter how righteous they may appear to
be, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)
said: "Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and asks him about something,
his prayers will not accepted for forty days." Narrated by Muslim
(2230).
And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Whoever has
intercourse with a menstruating woman or with a woman in her back
passage, or goes to a fortune-teller and believes what he says, has
disbelieved in that which Allaah revealed toMuhammad (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him)." Narrated by Ahmad (9779), Abu
Dawood (3904), al-Tirmidhi (135) and IbnMaajah (936); classed as
saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah.
Al-Baghawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:The fortune-teller is
the one who claims to have knowledge of things by means of some
information from which he figures out where stolen things are or where
lost items are etc. Quoted in al-Zawaajir 'an Iqtiraaf al-Kabaa'ir
(2/178)
Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The
fortune-teller: it was said that he is the soothsayer, who is the one
who foretells the future.
And it was said that it is a general term referring to soothsayers,
astrologers, geomancers and their ilk who claim to have knowledge of
the unseen by means of some knowledge and information that they use.
This is a more general meaning which is indicated by the derivation of
the word, as (the Arabic word) 'arraaf (meaning fortune-teller) is
derivedfrom the word ma'rifah (knowledge) so it applies to everyone
whodeals in these matters and claims to have knowledge of them. End
quote from al-Qawl al-Mufeed 'ala Kitaab al-Tawheed (2/48).
One of those who have repented from fortune-telling and soothsaying
said that he used to seekthe help of the jinn in order to find out
from them details of what was going on in the house of the one whose
property was stolen, andhis situation with his relatives and
neighbours, and his friends and enemies, and sometimes he wouldblame
someone who was under suspicion.
Even if we assume that the fortune-teller is able to point to the real
thief and bring the property back by means of his contact with the
jinn, it is not permissible to go to him and ask him anything, because
of theahaadeeth quoted above.
Secondly:
Some scholars are of the view that the one who claims to have
knowledge of stolen items or that the jinn tellhim about that is a
kaafir. Ibn Nujaym (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, discussing the
things that constitute kufr: Going to a soothsayer and believing him
when he says 'I know where stolen items are' or 'I speak on the basis
of what the jinn tell me'. End quote from al-Bahr al-Raa'iq (5/130).
As for his saying 'I speak on thebasis of what the jinn tell me' being
kufr, that is because the jinn, like humans, have no knowledge of the
unseen, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"Then when We decreeddeath for him [Sulaymaan (Solomon)], nothing
informed them (jinn) of his death excepta little worm of the earth
which kept (slowly) gnawing away at his stick. So when he fell down,
the jinn saw clearly that if they had known the Unseen, they would not
have stayed in the humiliating torment"
[Saba' 34:14]
This was stated in the commentary on al-Bahr al-Raa'iq.
So asking a fortune-teller or soothsayer about anything is haraam, and
that includes asking him about lost or stolen items, or asking him
about a disease and the remedy for it.
The scholars of the Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas were asked:
Sometimes we lose some money or goldin our house, and we believe that
it has been stolen, so we go to someone who is known as a mukhbir
('the one with the news'), and tell him about that, and he promises us
something good, and sometimes wefind the lost item, and sometimes we
don't. What is the ruling on ourgoing to these people?
They replied: It is not permissible for you to goto him because he is
a soothsayer, and it was narrated in a saheeh report that the Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade going to
soothsayers and their ilk,and asking them and believing them. End
quote from Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa'imah (1/410).
Thirdly:
The one who has gone to this fortune-teller andasked him something has
to repent to Allaah, may He be exalted, by regretting what he has
done, resolving not to do it again, and not accusing anyone of
stealing on the basis words of the fortune-teller and his helpers
among the jinn, becausethe jinn tell lies, and they may accuse someone
who is innocent so as to cause trouble among the Muslims. Repentance
in this case is required from the one who went to the fortune-teller
and asked him, and of the one who told him to do that, because both
have fallen into sin. Please seequestion no. 32863 for information on
repenting from asking and believing fortune-tellers.
The Muslim should turn to Allaah and ask Him to solve problems and
difficulties, for all things are in His Hand, may He be glorified, as
He says (interpretation of the meaning):
"Is not He (better than your gods) Who responds to the distressed one,
when he calls on Him, and Who removes the evil, and makes you
inheritors of the earth, generations after generations? Is there any
ilâh (god) withAllaah? Little is that you remember!"
[al-Naml 27:62]
And Allaah knows best.
This applies to your sister and her husband, and also applies to you.
You should turn to Allaahand ask Him to relieve you of this accusation
and wrong.
We advise your sister and her husband, and anyone who has anything to
do with this matter, not to accuse anyone on the basis of the words of
a charlatan or fortune-teller, because accusing someone who is
innocent is a serious matter. The basic principle is that he is
innocent and free of guilt. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah
be upon him) said: "Whoever says of a believer something that is not
true, Allaah will cause him to dwell in themud of khabaal until he
stops saying that." Narrated by Abu Dawood 5129 from Ibn 'Umar (may
Allaah be pleased with him); classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh
Abi Dawood.
Mud of khabaal refers to mud and mire and what comes from the sweat
ofthe people of Hell.
May Allaah help us all to do that which He loves and which pleases Him.
And Allaah knows best.

Waswaas (Satanic Whispers) About the Evil Eye

If a person admires something and mentionsAllaah, can he harm it by
the evil eye?
If someone is uncertain about that and this is causing a lot of
problems in his social life, and he is afraid to look at things and
people, knowing that hedoes not envy people (hasad) for the things
that they have, and he does not want to harm anyone, by Allaah, and he
reads Qur'aan and remembers Allaah all thetime.
I hope that you can help to relieve this distress from your Muslim
brother. May Allaah reward you with good.
Praise be to Allaah.
I ask Allaah to relieve your distress and take away your sorrow.
It should be noted that Islam does not bring anyhardship. Rather one
of the most important aims of sharee'ah (Islamic law)is to relieve
people of hardship.
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"Allaah does not want toplace you in difficulty"
[5:6]
It is not permissible for aMuslim to listen to the shaytaan and let
him fill his life with doubts, waswaas and paranoia, for if he does
that he will lose out in this world and will not gain anything in the
Hereafter. Such whispers(waswaas) are merely tricks of the accursed
Shaytaan who wants to cause grief for those who believe. And Allaah is
the best of protectors and the most merciful of those who show mercy.
What you must do is put a stop to all these whispers, and not pay any
attention to bad thoughts. It is sufficient for you to say the dhikr
(words of remembrance)that is prescribed in sharee'ah when you see
something good, and Allaah will protect it against the evil eye and
destructive envy (hasad).Remembrance of Allaah (dhikr) and the evil
eye or envy cannot coexist.
It was narrated from AbuUmaamah ibn Sahl ibn Haneef that the Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Why don't you
invoke blessings, for the evil eye is real."
Narrated by Maalik in al-Muwatta'; classed as saheeh (authentic) by
al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah.
Al-Zarqaani said in Sharhal-Muwatta' (4/320): i.e., why don't you say,
Baarak Allaahu feek (May Allaah bless you), and that would cancel out
what is feared of theevil eye and take away its effects. End quote.
It was narrated from 'Abd-Allaah ibn 'Aamir ibn Rabee'ah from his
father (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "If one of you sees
in himself or his brother something that he likes, let him pray for
blessings, for the evil eyeis real."
Narrated by al-Haakim inal-Mustadrak. He said: This is a hadeeth whose
isnaad (chain of narrators) is saheeh, although they (al-Bukhaari and
Muslim)did not narrate it with any mention of invokingblessing. And
al-Dhahabi agreed with him. It was classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in
Saheeh al-Jaami.
It says in al-Mawsoo'ah al-Fiqhiyyah (13/31).
This indicates that the evil eye cannot cause any harm if the one
whomay harm with the evil eye invokes blessings. What is prescribed
for everyone who admires something is to invoke blessings, for if he
prays for blessings, the harm must inevitably be diverted. Invoking
blessings means to say: Tabaarak Allaah ahsan al-khaaliqeen,
Allaahummah baarik fihi(Blessed be Allaah the best of creators, O
Allaah bless it).
Al-Nawawi said: It is mustahabb (desirable) for the one who may harm
with the evil eye topray the blessing for the one who may be harmedand
say Allaahumma baarik wa laa tadurrahu (O Allaah bless and do not harm
him) and Ma sha Allaah laa quwwata illa Billaah (As Allaah wills,
there is no power except with Allaah). End quote.
Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar said in Fath al-Baari (10/205):
The one who admires something should hasten to pray that the thing he
admires be blessed, and that will be a ruqyah (incantation) on his
part. End quote.
In Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa'imah (1/547) it says:
The remedy for the one who may cause harm with the evil eye when he
sees something he admires is to remember Allaah and invoke blessing.
End quote.
Shaykh al-Fawzan said inal-Muntaqa (1/question no. 87):
If the one who may cause harm with the evil eye fears that he may harm
the thing he is looking at, then he should say: Allaahumma baarik
'alayhi (O Allaah, bless it). Similarly it is mustahabb for him to
say: Ma sha Allaah laa quwwata illa Billaah (As Allaah wills, there is
no power except with Allaah), because it was narrated from Hishaam ibn
'Urwah from his father that when he sawa thing that he liked or he
entered one of his gardens, he would say: Ma sha Allaah laa quwwata
illa Billaah (As Allaah wills, there is no power except with Allaah).
If the one who may cause harm with the evil eye always says this
dhikr, then he will ward off its harm, in sha Allaah.
It says in Fataawa al-Shaykh 'Abd al-Kareem al-Khudayr (5):
The Muslim should not let doubts, illusions, suspicion and excessive
fear of the evil eye overwhelm him so much that he becomes afflicted
with psychological illness and the like. He should think positively of
Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, and understand that whatever
befalls him only happens by thewill of Allaah, may He be blessed and
exalted. So let him turn to Allaah, because He alone is able to ward
off harm and relieve distress. End quote.
If you see something that you like, then pray to Allaah for blessing,
and do not pay attentionto anything else. Allaah will protect it
because ofyour du'aa' (supplication), and will ward off all harm from
it. Do not let yourself keep on fearing it, for Allaah does not want
that for His slaves. Also keep striving to make yourself see the will
of Allaah in all things, for He has great wisdom in what He gives and
withholds, lowers and raises, and there is none to put back His
Judgement (cf. 13:41) and none can change HisWords (cf. 6:115).
Always remember – O slave of Allaah – that thisworld and everything in
it is too insignificant for people to envy one another and transgress
against one another for its sake, as al-Mutanabbi said:
What hearts desire is tooinsignificant for people to transgress
against one another or destroy one another in pursuit of it.
This is also indicated in the words of the Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him): "Why would one of you kill his
brother?" Narrated by Imam Maalik and Ahmad and others.
And Allaah knows best.

Islamic unity and Muslim intellectuals

Promoting unity of the great Islamic Ummah has been a major axis in
the thoughts of many leading Muslim intellectuals worldwide. Here are
some quotes on unity from these great personalities .
Martyr Morteza Motahari:
Obviously, by Islamic unity open-minded Muslim scholars do not mean
that Islamic schoolsof thought must be limited to one nor do they mean
that the common points among different Islamic schools of thought must
be accepted and the differences must be rejected for this is neither
rational nor is it practical.
Allamah Amini:
Different Islamic schools of thought differ in their ideas and
beliefs. Nevertheless, the bond ofbrotherhood to which the holy Koran
has clearlyreferred to by the verse"Verily, the believers are
brothers" will never be torn even though scientific debates and
religious argumentation reach their peak. This was the method of our
predecessors including the companions of the prophet and his
followers.
In spite of all our differences concerning the principles of Islam as
well as the secondary rules of this religion, as Muslims authors and
writers in the different corners of the world, we have one thing in
common, which is faith in God and the prophet of Islam (p.b.u.h.).
In our bodies one soul and sentiment governs and that is the soul of
Islam and sincerity.
Martyr Ayatollah Baqir Sadr
"I have dedicated all my life to creating brotherhood between Shia and
Sunnah and have supported and defended any step or message aimed at
uniting them. I am the brother and son of the followers of Sunnah as
much as I am the brother and son of the followers of Shia."
The first practical steps toward creating unity among Shia and Sunnah
were taken by Imam Moussa Sadr in Lebanon when forty years ago, he
wrote a letter to Sheikh Hassan Khaled-the Sunnah
Mufti of Lebanon- suggesting certain practical steps toward unity.
In that letter, Imam Moussa Sadr talked aboutunity concerning the
rules and principles of Shia and Sunnah as well as celebrating Islamic
feasts on the same day byall Muslims.
" By relying on modern scientific methods in sighting the moon
crescent, and therefore determining the day of the feast through
scientific preciseness, all Muslims will be able to celebrate the
feast on thesame day. Moreover, we can consider a form of call to
prayer, Which is accepted by all."
One year after this letter, in the annual 'Assembly of Islamic
Research" in Cairo, Imam Moussa Sadr offered a compiled plan
concerning this issue to the assembly which led to his permanent
membership. In the sameyear and in an interview with the Egyptian
magazine "Al-Mossawar' he said, "The issue of unity among different
Islamic schools of thought is only possible after achieving unity in
religious jurisprudence and will not be reached through mere
discussionsand superficial negotiations among the leaders of different
Islamic schools of thought.'
The joint participation ofImam Moussa Sadr and the Sunni mufti of
Lebanon in different ceremonies, especially, inthe memorial ceremony
of Ayatollah Hakim, which was held at the 'Shia Higher Council',
giving the sermon for theSunnah congregational prayer at Al-Azhar and
praying with them, are among the practical measures taken by this Shia
leader aimed at creating unity among Muslims. Measures at this level
and in this form were never taken after Imam Moussa Sadr.
Sadr believed that reaching unity depends on the foresight and effort
of all intellectuals in the Islamic world, and in his letter to Sheikh
Hassan Khaled he wrote,"Reaching unity requires precise studies and
investigation, determining and appointing responsibilities and
coordinating the efforts among all Arabs and Muslims. It also requires
the mobilizing of all Arabic countries and those who are conscientious
and have agood will worldwide. Moreover, carrying out these duties
means that we must donate all we can."
It is up to us to investigate the plans andmethods of reaching unity
together and in groups. Like this unity will be realized and
coordination of activitiesaimed at reaching unity and the depth and
speed of these activities will be facilitated.
Based on this belief the social and charitable activities of Imam MoussaSadr
Moussa Sadr as the Shia leader of Lebanon were not limited to Shias
and included all Lebanese. If some consider unity to be an ideal, Imam
MoussaSadr believed that it is vital for Islam. He said,"Unity and
unifying the forces and being efficient in this are not only among the
most honorable aims of Islam and the will of our great prophet but
also it is something that our existence and entity, honor as well as
the entity and existence of our next generations depends on.
Yes, unity is a vital issue and this concept should not remain as a
slogan orwritten speech. Rather it must be followed and this is not
possible unless by round-the-clock effortrising from the inside. Then
we shall have unity that sets as an example for others to follow.
Imam Moussa Sadr believed unity to be an essential part of the lives
of Muslims and said."Unity among Muslims is not just something
recommended by the prophet of Islam (P.B.U.H.) but it is an essential
part of life and the human mind also recommends it. Our existence and
survival depends on unity. By unity among Muslims I mean unity in the
real sense that is unity in all our thoughts, deeds, efforts and
plans.
Allameh Sayyed Mohammad Hossein Tabatabei:
The Shias of early Islam never ignored the ideas of the majority and
cooperated with all Muslims for the progress of general Islamic
issues.
Currently, it is a must for all Muslims to maintain their togetherness
concerning the principlesof the holy religion of Islam and learn from
all the pressure and distress caused by the enemies during the years
and to set aside the existing disunion and unite.
Sayyed Qotb:
Based on the holy Koran, Muslims should first carryout the most
essential and urgent action, whichis creating union among themselves.
The holy Koran has referred to unity by the word 'Etesam' .The
importance of unity is because for an action to be successful and
useful and have a positive result, it must be done based on union so
that different methods of carrying out that particular action do not
eliminated the positive effects.
Sheikh Mohammad Hossein Kashef Al-Ghata:
Islam is based on two pillars that is the pillar of 'there is no God
but Allah', and on unity.
Sheikh Mohammad Ghazali:
Islam invites people to set aside disunion and to be united. God
Almighty has referred to unity in the holy Koran when he advises
people to avoid disunion. Unfortunately, though, we are facing such
disunion. We fight against each other underthe pretext of religion and
follow different paths and show extreme bigotry and hostility towards
out other brothers."
Sayyed Abdulhossein Sharaf-el-Din:
'At the very beginning, politics created disunion among Shia and
Sunnah and now politics must bring them together.'
Sheikh Mohammad Shaltut, who agreed withAyatollah Boroujerdi in
applying the process of proximity and taking it forth in the direction
of eliminating all bigotry says," Islam does not force any of its
followers to follow a particular school of thought. The Jafari school
of thought known as the Islamic school of thought based on 12 Imams is
a school of thought the following of which is like followingthe Sunnah
Islamic school of thought. Therefore, it is importantthat Muslims
understand this fact and avoid unfairbigotry toward a particular
school of thought .for God's religion is not limited to a particular
school of thought .
Sheikh Mohammad Abdo the student of Sayyed Jamal-el-Din Asadabadi
believes that disunion is the conspiracy of the enemies
and says, 'Disunion among the followers of different Islamic schools
of thought is a conspiracy by the enemies . The enemies have tried
hard to weaken the different Islamic schools of thought by creating
disunion among the followers of the differentIslamic schools of
thought and to make them hate each other as well as to keep them away
from the true Islamic orders and to create suspicion among them and
decrease the relationship between Muslims and true Islam.'
Sheikh Mohammad Abdo:Union is the fruit of a tree which has different
barks, branches and leaves, and the root of which is the ideal Islamic
moral, and it is a must forthe Muslims to learn the real Islamic moral
teachings and to be able to benefit from its fruit.'
Sheikh Mohammad Shaltut:
The first Islamic leaders differed as far as science was concerned;
however, they respected each other. They used to travelto visit each
other and to learn from each other.
Ahmad Kashef-el-Gheta:
We must know that by proximity among different Islamic schools of
thought we do not mean to eliminate the differences among them. The
important aim is thatthese differences and disagreements do not lead
to hostility instead of leading to proximity and brotherhood.
Imam Khomieni, the great leader of the Islamic Revolution (May he rest
in peace):
'Disunion is from the Satan and unity is from God."
Martyr Ayatollah Sayyed Mohammad Taqi Hakim:
The lies and false propaganda by oppressive and tyrannical governments
are the main reason for disunion among Shia andSunnah.
Mohammad Rashid Reza"
One of the biggest problems of different Islamic schools of thought is
accusing each other of iniquity although they all aim to reach the
truth, each of them is a mojtahed, and even if a mojtahed makes a
mistake , he is forgiven.
Martyr Morteza Motahari:
Those who are against unity among Muslims refer to it, as unity among
different Islamic schools of thought to show that Islamic unity isan
irrational and impractical concept. However, great Islamic scholars do
not intend to change all Islamic schoolsof thought to either Shia or
Sunnah, but merely aim to unite Muslims.
Sayyed Ahmad Khomieni:
For years Muslim societieshave been considering Islamic unity and
unity among different Islamic countries, but a positive and
determining measure has not been taken. When the spirit of monotheism
and values which are essential in attracting people to unity do not
exist or do not rule a society, such efforts will not be useful.
Allahameh Sharaf-el-Din:
Whenever Muslims get to understand each other, there will be unity and
intimacy among them.
Allameh Mohammad Taqi Ghomi, among the pioneers of creating Islamic unity:
Eliminating disagreements among Muslims and creating unity among them
meansrenewing the grandeur of Islam. Disagreements on anything other
than the principles of religion will not harm faith and will not take
any one out of the realm of Islam.
Imam Moussa Sadr:
The basic reason for the detachment of different Islamic schools of
thought is lack of awareness of each other or knowing each other.
Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei:
If Muslims do not breach unity among them, unity between the West and
the East against them willfail.
Allamah Mohammed Mohammed Madani:
Before starting research, researchers must set aside the concept of
different sects and Islamic schools of thought so that they can judge
the opinions and views of different schoolsof thought without bigotry
and to choose the best of them based on reason.

Five Pillars of Islam

Acting correctly and sincerely on the five pillars transforms a
Muslim's life into one that is in harmony with nature and thus in
conformity with the will of the Creator. It inspires one to work
towards theestablishment of justice, equality and righteousness in
society, and the eradication of injustice, falsehood and evil.
1. TESTIMONY (Shahadah) , the first of the five basic foundations, is
the declaration, knowingly and voluntarily, of: La ilaha illal lahu
Muhammadur rasulul lah. "There is no god except Allah, Muhammadis the
Messenger of Allah".This declaration is the basis of all actions in
Islam, and the other basic duties follow this affirmation.
2. COMPULSORY PRAYER (Salah) is offered five times a day. It is a
practical demonstration of faith, and keeps a believer in touch with
their Creator. The Salah develops in a believer the qualities of
self-discipline, steadfastness and obedience to the Truth, leading one
to be patient, honest and truthful in the affairs of their life.
3. CHARITY (Zakah) is a compulsory payment from a Muslim's annual
savings. It can only be spent on helping the poor, the needy, and
theoppressed, and for the general upliftment of society. Zakah is one
of the fundamental principles of Islamic economy, which ensuresan
equitable society where everyone has a right to contribute and share.
4. FASTING (Sawm) is the annual obligatory fasting during each day of
the month of Ramadan - the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. One
must refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and sex, from dawn to
sunset. Sawm develops abeliever's moral and spiritual standard and
keeps them away from selfishness, greed, extravagance and other vices.
Sawm is an annualtraining program that increases a Muslim's
determination to fulfill their obligation to the Almighty Lord.
5. PILGRIMAGE (Hajj) is an annual event, obligatoryon those Muslims
who can afford to undertake it, at least once in their lifetime. It is
a pilgrimage (journey) to the "House of Allah" (Al-Ka'bah) in Mecca,
Saudi Arabia, in the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar. Hajj
symbolizes the unity of humankind; Muslims from every race and
nationality assemble together in equality and fraternity to worship
their Lord.
