شَرِيكَ لَهُ ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ
شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ،
سُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلهِ ، وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَاللهُ
أَكْـبَرُ ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ الْعَلِيِّ

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي
Translation
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
"Whoever wakes up at night and says:
'None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone and with no
partner, to Him belongs [all] sovereignty and praise, and He is able
to do all things;
How far from imperfections Allah is, and all praise is for Allah, and
none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Allah is the
greatest, and there is no power nor might except with Allah, The Most
High, The Supreme.'
and then supplicates:
'O my Lord forgive me.'
will be forgiven."
In another narration:
"and then asks [for something], he will be answered. If he then
performs ablution and prays, his prayer will be accepted."

laa ilaaha ill-allaahu waḥdahu laa shareeka lah, lahul-mulku wa
lahul-ḥamd, wa huwa ‛alaa kulli shay'in qadeer,
subḥaan-allaahi wal-ḥamdu lillaah, wa laa ilaaha ill-allaahu wallaahu

The Story of Profopet luth(a.w)
Prophet Luutleft Egypt, accompanied by his uncle Ibraaheemand headed
to the city of Sodom in Palestine, which was on the western shore of
the Dead Sea.
This city was filled with evil. Its residents waylaid, robbed and
killed travellers. Another common evil among them was that their men
used to have sex with men instead of women. This unnatural act later
became known as sodomy, after the city ofSodom. It was practiced
openly and unashamedly.
It was at the height of these crimes and sins that Allaah revealed to
Prophet Luutthat he should summon the people to give up their indecent
behaviour, but their immoral habits were so deeply ingrained that they
were deaf to Luut's preaching. Addicted to their unnatural desires,
they refused to accept the call to repentance, even when Luutwarned
them of Allaah's punishment. Instead, they threatened to drive him out
of the city if he continued preaching against their evil habits.
Allaah Almighty revealed )what means(:"The people of Luut denied the
messengers. When their brother Luut said to them: 'Will you not fear
Allaah? Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. So fear Allaah
and obey me. And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is
only from the Lord of the worlds. Do you approach males among the
worlds. And leave what your Lord has created for you as mates? But you
are a people transgressing.' They said: 'If you do not desist, O Luut,
you will surely be of those evicted.' He said: 'Indeed, I am, toward
your deed, of those who detest ]it[. My Lord! Save me and my family
from ]the consequence of[ what they do.' So We saved him and his
family, all. Except an old woman ]i.e., the wife of Luut[ among those
who remained behind."]Quran: 26:160-171[
The sinful actions of Prophet Luut's people saddened his heart. Their
abominable reputation spread throughout the land, while he continued
to struggle against them. As the years passed, he persisted in his
mission, but to no avail. No one responded to his call and believed
except for the members of his family; even in his household, not all
the members believed: Luut's wife was a disbeliever.
If home is the place of comfort and rest, then Luutfound none, for he
was tormented both within and outside his home. His life was
continuous agony as he suffered greatly, but he remained patient and
steadfast as a Messenger to his people. Instead of heeding to him,
they belittled his message, and mockingly challenged him, saying )what
means(:"…'Bring us the punishment of Allaah, if you should be of the
truthful!"]Quran: 29:29[
Overwhelmed with despair, Luutprayed to Allaah to grant him victory
and to destroy the corrupt. Allaah Almighty, therefore, sent three
angels in the guise of young handsome men in answer to his prayer.
They reached the walls of the town in the afternoon. The first person
who caught sight of them was Luut's daughter while she was filling her
jug with water from the river. When she saw them, she was stunned that
there could be men of such magnificent beauty on earth.
One of the three men )angels( asked her: "O maiden! Is there a place to rest?"
Remembering the evil character of her people, she replied: "Stay here
and do not enter the town until I inform my father and return."
Leaving her jug by the river, she swiftly ran home.
"O father!" she cried. "You are wanted by young men at the town gate
and I have never before seen the like of their faces!"
Luutfelt distressed as he quickly ran to his guests.
They visited him at home as guests. After ushering them in hospitably,
he asked them where they came from and where they were going.
They did not reply to his questions. Instead they asked if he could
host them. He began talking with them and impressed upon them the
repulsive nature of his people. Luutwas filled with turmoil; he wanted
to convince his guests without offending them, not to spend the night
there, yet at the same time he wanted to extend to them the expected
hospitality normally accorded to guests. In vain, he tried to make
them understand the perilous situation. At last, therefore, he
requested them to wait until nightfall, for then no one would see
them.
When darkness shrouded the town, Luutescorted his guests to his home.
No one was aware of their presence. However, as soon as Luut's wife
saw them, she slipped out of the house quietly so that no one noticed
her. Quickly, she ran to her people with the news and spread it to all
the inhabitants like wildfire. The people rushed towards Luutquickly
and excitedly.
When Luutsaw the mob approaching his house, he shut the door, but they
kept on banging on it. He pleaded with them to leave the visitors
alone and fear Allaah's punishment. He urged them to seek sexual
fulfilment with their wives, for that is what Allaah had made lawful.
Luut's people waited until he had finished his short sermon, and then
they roared with laughter. Blinded by lust, they broke down the door.
Luutbecame very angry, but he stood powerless before these violent
people. He felt powerless to prevent the abuse of his guests, but he
firmly continued to plead with the mob.
At that terrible moment, he wished he had the power to push them away
from his guests. Seeing him in a state of helplessness and grief, the
guests said to him: "Do not be anxious or frightened, for we are
angels, and these people will not harm you."
On hearing this, the mob was terrified and fled from Luut's house,
hurling threats at him as they left. The angels warned Prophet Luutto
leave his house before sunrise, taking with him all his family, except
his wife.
Allaah had decreed that the city ofSodomshould perish. An earthquake
rocked the town. It was as if a mighty power had lifted the entire
city and flung it down in one jolt. A storm of stones then rained on
the city. Everyone and everything was destroyed, including Luut's
wife.
The Holy Quran recorded this event; it states )what means(:"So We
saved him and his family, all. Except an old woman ]his wife[ among
those who remained behind. Then We destroyed the others. And We rained
upon them a rain ]of stones[, and evil was the rain of those who were
warned. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be
believers. And indeed, your Lord – He is the Exalted in Might, the
Merciful."]Quran: 26:170-175[
Thus, the people of Luutwere destroyed and their towns and names have
been erased from the face of the earth.

The story of Haaroot and Maaroot– I
One of the stories in the Quran, is the story of Haaroot and Maaroot.
Allaah Says what means:"And they ]i.e., the Children of Israel[
followed ]instead[ what the devils had recited during the reign of
Sulaymaan )Solomon(. It was not Sulaymaan who disbelieved, but the
devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed
to the two angels at Babylon, Haaroot and Maaroot. But they ]i.e., the
two angels[ do not teach anyone unless they say: 'We are a trial, so
do not disbelieve ]by practicing magic[.' And ]yet[ they learn from
them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife.
But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allaah.
And they ]i.e., people[ learn what harms them and does not benefit
them. But they ]i.e., the Children of Israel[ certainly knew that
whoever purchased it ]i.e., magic[ would not have in the Hereafter any
share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they
only knew."]Quran 2: 102[
The Children of Israel received a Great Book from Allaah, namely the
Quran, which confirmed what they had been told in the Tawraah )i.e.
Torah(; they were claiming to adhere to their scripture, yet they
disbelieved in the Messenger )Muhammad(and a group of them also threw
the Scripture of Allaah )i.e., the Tawraah( behind their backs and
shunned it, despite them knowing that it was the truth, as Allaah
tells us, saying what means:"…A party of those who had been given the
Scripture threw the Scripture of Allaah ]i.e., the Tawraah[ behind
their backs as if they did not know ]what it contained[."]Quran 2:
101[
It is the way of Allaah that He punishes those who shun that which
benefits them; He therefore busies them with things that are of no
benefit to them, or makes them indulge in what harms them. Whoever
shuns the worship of the Most Merciful will be afflicted with the
worship of idols.
Whoever shuns Islamic monotheism will be afflicted with association
with Allaah. Whoever shuns the Sunnah will be afflicted with religious
innovation. Whoever shuns adhering to the Islamic texts will be
afflicted with blind imitation of others who have no evidence to back
up their actions.
Whoever shuns hoping in, loving and fearing only Allaah will be
afflicted with directing all these acts to other than Him. Whoever
refrains from spending his wealth for the sake of Allaah will be
afflicted with spending it for the sake of Satan.
Whoever shuns humbling himself to Allaah will be afflicted with being
humiliated by other people, and whoever shuns the truth will be
afflicted with adhering to falsehood.
This is exactly what happened to the Jews when they shunned the Book
of Allaah; they were afflicted with following in the footsteps of
Satan. During the reign of Sulaymaanthey refused to believe in the
Book of Allaah, and were thus afflicted by following what the devils
recited and invented.
The devils introduced magic to the people and claimed that
Sulaymaanused magic and that it was the means for him to have such
great power and a vast empire.
Indeed they lied, because Allaah is the One who granted him enough
power and such a vast empire that he had no need to resort to magic,
or to seek the help of the devils. As a matter of fact, Allaah
facilitated the devils for the disposal of Sulaymaan; Allaah Says what
means:"They made for him what he willed of elevated chambers, statues,
bowls like reservoirs, and stationary kettles…"]Quran 34: 13[
Allaah utilised them for Sulaymaanto use, and so they were under his
command, but after the death of Sulaymaanthe devils came out to the
people claiming that the reason behind his control over them was the
magic he used and practiced, but Allaah exposes their lie saying what
means:"And they ]i.e., the Children of Israel[ followed ]instead[ what
the devils had recited during the reign of Sulaymaan. It was not
Sulaymaan who disbelieved …"]Quran 2: 102[
Whoever practices or uses magic is a disbeliever, but Sulaymaannever
disbelieved and never practiced magic; indeed Allaah confirms the very
opposite, saying what means:"…It was not Sulaymaan who disbelieved,
but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic…"]Quran 2: 102[ They
disbelieved by teaching people magic and how to use it, thereby
misguiding them.
The Jews practiced the magic that Allaah sent the two angels with,
namely Haaroot and Maaroot, as a means of testing people and seeing
who amongst His slaves would remain steadfast and who would deviate,
or who would remain upon faith and who would disbelieve.
These two angels, Haaroot and Maaroot, were sent to teach people magic
in the land of Babylon in Iraq as a test for these people. One may
ask: "How can Allaah send these two angels to teach people magic if
practicing magic is disbelief?" The answer is that it is done in
order to subject people to a trial, as Allaah Says what means:"…But
they ]i.e., the two angels[ do not teach anyone unless they say: 'We
are a trial, so do not disbelieve ]by practicing magic[…'"]Quran 2:
102[
These angels would initially warn people not to learn this magic, and
that to do so would entail disbelief, but if they insisted on learning
magic, then they would teach them it; this magic could thereafter be
used for prohibited reasons, such as to separate spouses. The Jews
practiced the magic that they accused Sulaymaanof using.
The Jews learnt magic and became specialists in it, and to this day
the most skilled magicians are the Jews, especially the Moroccan Jews.
These Jews shunned the news of the description and imminent arrival of
the Prophet Muhammadthat was in their scripture; they also shunned the
new Book )i.e. the Quran(; they eschewed all this and instead resorted
to learning and practicing magic.
In this story, Allaah mentions some of the evil consequences of magic,
such as what means:"…And ]yet[ they learn from them that by which they
cause separation between a man and his wife…"]Quran 2: 102[
This is while Allaah describes marriage as something that results in
harmony when He Says what means:"…He placed between you ]i.e., man and
his wife[ affection and mercy…."]Quran 30: 21[
Magic separates man from his wife, which is proof that it does have an
effect, but this effect only occurs by the will of Allaah. Some types
of magic make a person love another and act as if he is enslaved to
him or her; such a person would feel that he simply cannot live
without this person; another type of magic results in the opposite,
whereby a person may hate another to the extent that he cannot even
look him in the eye; a father can be bewitched in order to make him
despise his children or wife, as in the previously mentioned verse of
Chapter Al-Baqarah.
Allaah Says what means:"But they ]i.e. the Children of Israel[
certainly knew that whoever purchased it ]i.e. learnt and practiced
magic[ would not have in the Hereafter any share."]Quran 2: 102[
The scholars differed in their interpretation of this verse. Some of
them stated that Allaah did not send down these angels with magic to
teach people, but rather it was the devils who taught people magic. On
the other hand, many from the Salaf )predecessors(were of the view
that Allaah sent down to the earth these two angels from the heavens
as a punishment to them; others said that they were angels who
deviated and were an exceptional case from all the other angels, who
never disobey Allaah; yet others said that they were honourable angels
who were sent down to teach people magic as a way of testing them, but
who only taught those who insisted on learning it after having been
informed and reminded that magic is a form of disbelief, and after
having been sternly warned against learning and practicing it.
Undoubtedly, learning magic is prohibited, and practicing it is
disbelief, as indicated in the verse, in addition to many prophetic
narrations that affirm this fact.
Allaah Says what means:"And they ]i.e., the Children of Israel[

afflicted with directing all these acts to other than Him. Whoever
refrains from spending his wealth for the sake of Allaah will be
afflicted with spending it for the sake of Satan.
Whoever shuns humbling himself to Allaah will be afflicted with being
humiliated by other people, and whoever shuns the truth will be
afflicted with adhering to falsehood.
This is exactly what happened to the Jews when they shunned the Book
of Allaah; they were afflicted with following in the footsteps of
Satan. During the reign of Sulaymaanthey refused to believe in the
Book of Allaah, and were thus afflicted by following what the devils
recited and invented.
The devils introduced magic to the people and claimed that
Sulaymaanused magic and that it was the means for him to have such
great power and a vast empire.
Indeed they lied, because Allaah is the One who granted him enough
power and such a vast empire that he had no need to resort to magic,
or to seek the help of the devils. As a matter of fact, Allaah
facilitated the devils for the disposal of Sulaymaan; Allaah Says what
means:"They made for him what he willed of elevated chambers, statues,
bowls like reservoirs, and stationary kettles…"]Quran 34: 13[
Allaah utilised them for Sulaymaanto use, and so they were under his
command, but after the death of Sulaymaanthe devils came out to the
people claiming that the reason behind his control over them was the
magic he used and practiced, but Allaah exposes their lie saying what
means:"And they ]i.e., the Children of Israel[ followed ]instead[ what
the devils had recited during the reign of Sulaymaan. It was not
Sulaymaan who disbelieved …"]Quran 2: 102[
Whoever practices or uses magic is a disbeliever, but Sulaymaannever
disbelieved and never practiced magic; indeed Allaah confirms the very
opposite, saying what means:"…It was not Sulaymaan who disbelieved,
but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic…"]Quran 2: 102[ They
disbelieved by teaching people magic and how to use it, thereby
misguiding them.
The Jews practiced the magic that Allaah sent the two angels with,
namely Haaroot and Maaroot, as a means of testing people and seeing
who amongst His slaves would remain steadfast and who would deviate,
or who would remain upon faith and who would disbelieve.
These two angels, Haaroot and Maaroot, were sent to teach people magic
in the land of Babylon in Iraq as a test for these people. One may
ask: "How can Allaah send these two angels to teach people magic if
practicing magic is disbelief?" The answer is that it is done in
order to subject people to a trial, as Allaah Says what means:"…But
they ]i.e., the two angels[ do not teach anyone unless they say: 'We
are a trial, so do not disbelieve ]by practicing magic[…'"]Quran 2:
102[
These angels would initially warn people not to learn this magic, and
that to do so would entail disbelief, but if they insisted on learning
magic, then they would teach them it; this magic could thereafter be
used for prohibited reasons, such as to separate spouses. The Jews
practiced the magic that they accused Sulaymaanof using.
The Jews learnt magic and became specialists in it, and to this day
the most skilled magicians are the Jews, especially the Moroccan Jews.
These Jews shunned the news of the description and imminent arrival of
the Prophet Muhammadthat was in their scripture; they also shunned the
new Book )i.e. the Quran(; they eschewed all this and instead resorted
to learning and practicing magic.
In this story, Allaah mentions some of the evil consequences of magic,
such as what means:"…And ]yet[ they learn from them that by which they
cause separation between a man and his wife…"]Quran 2: 102[
This is while Allaah describes marriage as something that results in
harmony when He Says what means:"…He placed between you ]i.e., man and
his wife[ affection and mercy…."]Quran 30: 21[
Magic separates man from his wife, which is proof that it does have an
effect, but this effect only occurs by the will of Allaah. Some types
of magic make a person love another and act as if he is enslaved to
him or her; such a person would feel that he simply cannot live
without this person; another type of magic results in the opposite,
whereby a person may hate another to the extent that he cannot even
look him in the eye; a father can be bewitched in order to make him
despise his children or wife, as in the previously mentioned verse of
Chapter Al-Baqarah.
Allaah Says what means:"But they ]i.e. the Children of Israel[
certainly knew that whoever purchased it ]i.e. learnt and practiced
magic[ would not have in the Hereafter any share."]Quran 2: 102[
The scholars differed in their interpretation of this verse. Some of
them stated that Allaah did not send down these angels with magic to
teach people, but rather it was the devils who taught people magic. On
the other hand, many from the Salaf )predecessors(were of the view
that Allaah sent down to the earth these two angels from the heavens
as a punishment to them; others said that they were angels who
deviated and were an exceptional case from all the other angels, who
never disobey Allaah; yet others said that they were honourable angels
who were sent down to teach people magic as a way of testing them, but
who only taught those who insisted on learning it after having been
informed and reminded that magic is a form of disbelief, and after
having been sternly warned against learning and practicing it.
Undoubtedly, learning magic is prohibited, and practicing it is
disbelief, as indicated in the verse, in addition to many prophetic
narrations that affirm this fact.
The Story of Haaroot and Maaroot – II
Magic is a reality and not mere illusion; some people consider tricks
of the hand or deceptions of the eye to be magic, but magic is much
more than that; it is a reality, and could lead one to hate what he
used to love, such as the case which Allaah informs us of in the
abovementioned verse where it can separate man from his wife. Indeed
the goal that the devil strives hardest to achieve is to separate man
from his wife, as in the narration of Jaabir ibn 'Abdullaahwho stated
that the Prophetsaid:"Satan places his throne on the water, then he
sends his troops to people; the closest devil in position to him is
the one who causes the most mischief and trials amongst people. One of
them )i.e., from his troops( comes to him and says: `I continued to
whisper to so and so until he committed such and such a sin.` Satan
responds: `I swear by Allaah! You have not done much.` )This process
continues( until one )devil( comes and says: `I continued to whisper
to him until I made him separate from his wife.` Thereupon, Satan
brings him close to him and hugs him, saying: `Yes! You are the
one.`"]Muslim[ Meaning, that he is the one who has achieved the
greatest accomplishment. This separation is caused by either magic or
by any other means.
Some magicians use magic to bewitch the eyes of people and make them
believe that they are seeing something that they are not, as Allaah
says regarding the magicians of Pharaoh what means:"…And they
presented a great ]feat[ of magic."]Quran 7: 116[ People thought, as a
result of their magic, that they were seeing snakes instead of ropes
and sticks.
Some people claim that there is a prophetic narration that is as
follows: "Learn magic but do not teach it to others." This is a
fabrication; such words were never uttered by the Prophet.
The Islamic ruling regarding the magician is that he is to be
beheaded, as the Prophetsaid:"The punishment for the magician is that
he must be beheaded."]At-Tirmithi & Al-Haakim[ This is because such a
person is an apostate, even if he fasts, prays and claims that he is a
Muslim, because his practice of magic invalidates any good deeds he
may perform.
There are two ways of being relieved from the effects of magic:
- The incorrect way is to go to magicians for this purpose; this is
prohibited because the Prophetsaid:"He who approaches a magician and
believes what he says will have his prayers rejected for forty
days."]Muslim[ Thus, it is prohibited to approach them or to seek
their assistance in removing the effect of magic done on one by
others.
- The correct way is by reciting the legislated Ruqyah )i.e. the Quran
and certain prophetic supplications(. Examples of this would be the
Chapters Al-Faatihah, Al-Ikhlaas, Al-Falaq, An-Naas and the Verse of
the Throne, or Ayat Al-Kursi, which is the two-hundred and fifty fifth
verse of Chapter Al-Baqarah. An example of a prophetic supplication
that is useful in this regard is:"Allaahumma Rabban-naas,
athhibil-ba's, wash'fi, Antash-Shaafi, laa shifaa'a illaa shifaa'uka,
shifaa'n laa yughaadiru saqama ]O Allaah! The Lord of mankind! Remove
this disease and cure )him or her(. You are the Great Curer. There is
no cure but through You, which leaves behind no
disease[.'']Al-Bukhaari[
One may also recite Quranic verses in water and add to it seven dried
and crushed Lote-tree leaves. This method is confirmed to have been
practiced by some of the Salaf such as Wahb ibn Munabbih.
Some people recite the verses that address the issue of magic, like
those found in Chapters Al-A'raaf, Yoonus, and Taa Haa over this water
and then add the crushed leaves to it, then they recite Chapters
Al-Ikhlaas, Al-Falaq, An-Naas and some authentic Prophetic
supplications over it. They then wash their body with this water. This
is a method that has been proven to be beneficial by experience.
The Prophetwas bewitched by Labeed ibn Al-A'sam, who had strong
relations with the Jews, and the Jews requested his assistance due to
him being renowned for his experience in magic.
The Prophetwas afflicted by this magic for six months. Hewould think
that he was sleeping with his wives while in fact he was not.
Hepersevered through this period, and when he feared that it would
affect his zeal for worship, hesupplicated to Allaah, asking Him to
remove it from him.
'Aa'ishahnarrated: "Magic was done on the Prophetso he began to think
that he was doing things that he was not actually doing. One day,
heinvoked )Allaah( for a long period and then said:"I feel that Allaah
has inspired me as how to cure myself. Two persons came to me )in a
dream( and sat down, one by my head and the other by my feet. One of
them asked the other: 'What is the sickness of this man?' The other
replied: 'He has been bewitched.' The first asked: 'Who has bewitched
him?' The other replied: 'Labeed ibn Al-A'sam.' The first one asked:
'What materials did he use?' The other replied: 'A comb, the hair
gathered on it, and the outer skin of the pollen of a male date-palm.'
The first asked: 'Where are they?' The other replied: 'In the well of
Tharwaan.'"
So the Prophetheaded out towards the well. He later returned and said
to me:"The date-palms )i.e., the ones on the well( are like the heads
of devils."I asked: 'Did you take out those things with which the
magic was done?' Hereplied:"No, for I have been cured by Allaah, and I
am afraid that this action may spread evil amongst the people."Later
on the well was filled up with earth." ]Al-Bukhaari[
The hair that was on the comb was taken, and a knot was made in which
the magic was placed; then, the hair that contained the magic was
placed inside the outer skin of the pollen of a male date-palm, and
this was placed under a rock, inside the well. When some
Companionswent to remove this magic from the well, they found that its
water was the colour of Henna, due to the effect of magic on it.
The Prophetwas inspired by Allaah as to where the location of the
magic was; it was removed and the knot was undone, so the magic was
ruined.
The question of 'Aa'ishahwas an indirect way of asking why the
Prophetdid not punish the man who bewitched him, and heexplained why,
saying:"I am afraid that this action may spread evil amongst the
people."Meaning, that since the punishment of being a magician is
execution by beheading, and because people did not know that he
practiced such evil, nor did they witness him doing it on the
Prophetthen punishing him would have encouraged people to accuse
anyone of doing magic, even if they were innocent, and justify it by
quoting this action of the Prophet.
Hewas very careful not to execute anyone whose crime was not obvious
to everybody, and it is for this same reason he refrained from killing
Ibn Salool, who was the head of hypocrites, despite him knowing that
he was being a disbeliever, a liar and a hypocrite.
Hedid not kill him because it would not have been clear to people why
he killed him, due to this Ibn Salool pretending to be Muslim.
One may ask: "How could the Prophetbe bewitched when he was conveying
the message?"
The answer is that the magic never affected any aspect of his mind,
memory or mission; it only affected his relations with his wives.
Another question that might be asked is: "Does the fact that hewas
bewitched not contradict being protected by Allaah? Allaah Says what
means:"…And Allaah will protect you from the people…"]Quran 5: 67[
The answer is that the protection referred to in this verse was
against certain matters only, such as being killed before conveying
the message fully, or being prevented from conveying the message in
any way.
In fact, proof of the fact that such protection was limited is that
hewas afflicted greatly by the disbelievers: they offended and beat
him, and besieged him and his followers. Healso suffered hunger and
fell into a pit that the disbelievers had dug for him. They did all
these things but were unable to prevent him from conveying the message
of Allaah.
Some magic is performed by blowing into knots and other materials
which magicians compile, which makes the bewitched person believe he
is performing actions that is not actually doing; another type makes a
person incapable of having sexual intercourse with his wife; another
type makes the wife imagine that her husband is a beast or a snake
whenever he tries to approach her sexually; there is another type that
makes the husband imagine that his wife has a foul stench whenever he
attempts to approach her sexually, even though she may be clean and
smell pleasant.
There are women who resort to magic in order to make their husbands
divorce his other wife or wives, so that she can have him all to
herself - and this is one of the greatest ways of oppressing others.
One may ask: "There are deadly types of magic; are they incurable?"
The answer is that they are curable, unless the effects of this magic
coincide with the designated time of the person's death. If that is
the case, then nothing can help him. Allaah Says what means:"But never
will Allaah delay a soul when its time has come. And Allaah is
Acquainted with what you do."]Quran 63: 11[
The one who bewitches others and thereby causes their death must be
sentenced to death, because such a person killed a soul intentionally
and without due right.
Some people wear amulets, claiming that they protect them from magic,

The word, Eemaan literally means, "to know," "to believe," to put
one's trust in something or someone." In Islamic Sharee'ah
)legislation(, Eemaan means putting one's entire trust in, and having
complete faith in Allaah, His Prophetand His message.
Therefore, one who puts his entire trust in Allaah should not only
testify to his faith by word of mouth, but must also accept it with
all his heart and soul and then staunchly adheres to it physically.
Furthermore, he is obliged to do good works in keeping with the
fundamentals of the faith, as coinciding faith with right action is
absolutely vital.
Acceptance of Allaah as your Lord is like making a promise to place
Him at the center of your life, so that He may become the pivot of
your thoughts and emotions. It means entrusting yourself to Him
entirely, and focusing all your hopes and aspirations, fears and
entreaties upon Him. Then, instead of living for worldly things, you
should live for the service of your Sustainer. He, Al-Mighty, will
thus become all in all in your life.
A Muslim declares his faith by saying: "Ash-hadu Allaa Ilaaha
Illallaah, Wa Ash-hadu Anna Muhammadun Rasoolullaah" )testify that
there no god )worthy of worship( except Allaah and that Muhammad is
the Messenger of Allaah( Its recital is called the Shahaadah.
For Muslims there are certain requirements, which have to be observed
regarding the Shahaadah. They are as follows:
• It has to be uttered aloud, at least once in a lifetime.
• It's meaning has to be fully understood.
• It should be believed in "with the heart."
• It should be physically implemented.
• It should be professed until death.
The six basic beliefs
There are six things that are essential for a Muslim to believe in.
These essential beliefs are pillars without which ones faith is not
accepted. They are called the articles )or pillars( of faith.
1.Allaah:To believe in Allaah, to believe that He exists, that He is
One, and that He Alone is the Creator, and Lord over everything, and
that He Alone is Worthy of worship. Additionally, one must believe in
all the beautiful Names and Attributes with which Allaah described
Himself or His messenger described Him with.
2.The Angels:To believe in the angels who always obey Him and are His
creation of Allaah, and that Allaah created them from light.
3.The Revealed Books:Allaah revealed Books to His Prophets for the
guidance of mankind. We must believe that all these Books mentioned in
the Quran were revelations from Allaah.
4.The Messengers of Allaah:To believe in Allaah's prophets. We must
believe in all the prophets and give them due respect.
5.The Last Day:To believe in the Day of Judgment and to believe that
life in this world will come to an end one day and that everything in
this world will perish. Then Allaah will bring all beings back to life
and will judge them according to all that they did while they lived on
earth.
6.The Predestination and Divine Decree:To believe that everything
comes from Allaah. This means that Allaah knows everything that is
going to happen, whether good or bad, Has predestined for it to happen
and decreed it.
Man too often lives for worldly objectives which come to dominate his
thoughts and emotions and thus resulting in him leading a heedless
life. The life that is truly worth striving for is that which is lived
for the sake of attaining the pleasure of one's Lord.
Man should live in remembrance of Allaah. His name should be on his
lips as he wakens and as he sleeps. As he halts or proceeds on his
way, he should live in trust of Allaah, and when he speaks or remains
silent, it should be for the pleasure of his Lord.

Acceptance of Allaah as your Lord is like making a promise to place

entirely, and focusing all your hopes and aspirations, fears and
entreaties upon Him. Then, instead of living for worldly things, you
should live for the service of your Sustainer. He, Al-Mighty, will
thus become all in all in your life.
A Muslim declares his faith by saying: "Ash-hadu Allaa Ilaaha
Illallaah, Wa Ash-hadu Anna Muhammadun Rasoolullaah" )testify that
there no god )worthy of worship( except Allaah and that Muhammad is
the Messenger of Allaah( Its recital is called the Shahaadah.
For Muslims there are certain requirements, which have to be observed
regarding the Shahaadah. They are as follows:
• It has to be uttered aloud, at least once in a lifetime.
• It's meaning has to be fully understood.
• It should be believed in "with the heart."
• It should be physically implemented.
• It should be professed until death.
The six basic beliefs
There are six things that are essential for a Muslim to believe in.
These essential beliefs are pillars without which ones faith is not
accepted. They are called the articles )or pillars( of faith.
1.Allaah:To believe in Allaah, to believe that He exists, that He is
One, and that He Alone is the Creator, and Lord over everything, and
that He Alone is Worthy of worship. Additionally, one must believe in
all the beautiful Names and Attributes with which Allaah described
Himself or His messenger described Him with.
2.The Angels:To believe in the angels who always obey Him and are His
creation of Allaah, and that Allaah created them from light.
3.The Revealed Books:Allaah revealed Books to His Prophets for the
guidance of mankind. We must believe that all these Books mentioned in
the Quran were revelations from Allaah.
4.The Messengers of Allaah:To believe in Allaah's prophets. We must
believe in all the prophets and give them due respect.
5.The Last Day:To believe in the Day of Judgment and to believe that
life in this world will come to an end one day and that everything in
this world will perish. Then Allaah will bring all beings back to life
and will judge them according to all that they did while they lived on
earth.
6.The Predestination and Divine Decree:To believe that everything
comes from Allaah. This means that Allaah knows everything that is
going to happen, whether good or bad, Has predestined for it to happen
and decreed it.
Man too often lives for worldly objectives which come to dominate his
thoughts and emotions and thus resulting in him leading a heedless
life. The life that is truly worth striving for is that which is lived
for the sake of attaining the pleasure of one's Lord.
Man should live in remembrance of Allaah. His name should be on his
lips as he wakens and as he sleeps. As he halts or proceeds on his
way, he should live in trust of Allaah, and when he speaks or remains
silent, it should be for the pleasure of his Lord.

feel i have done a terrible mistake . There are so many issues wrong
w/ my marriage and my husband says its Shariah and Allah will punish

almost 3yrs. he does not maintain me or our kids. He works in uk and

The )wrong( conclusions that you made are due to the following two matters:
1- Being wronged by your husband who falsely attributes his injustice to Islam.
2- Your wrong understanding to some religious rulings.
However, before talking about these two matters, we would like to draw
your attention to the fact that in Islam the marriage contract has
conditions that must be fulfilled so that the marriage will be valid;
you may read these conditions in Fatwa 83629. The most important of
these conditions are the consent )and presence( of the woman's
guardian and the presence of two witnesses: this is so, so that the
marriage will be authenticated and the rights of the wife and children
will be protected.
It should also be mentioned that the husband is obliged to have good
marital relationship with his wife and it is not permissible for him
to be absent from her more than six months except with her consent;
this has already been discussed in Fataawa 85711and 88304.
As regards the conduct of your husband, he is wrong in many aspects.
For instance, a husband is obliged to spend on his wife and children
according to reasonable grounds and we have already clarified this in
Fatwa 85012, and we also clarified in it that a wife is not required
to spend on herself )and children( even if she is working and that if
she spends without the intention of doing that as an act of charity,
she is permitted to ask her husband to reimburse her for whatever she
had spent.
With regard to the statement that a divorcee is not entitled to
expenditures and accommodation, then this is not completely true. For
example, a husband is obliged to spend on a divorced wife who is
divorced a revocable divorce as long as she is in her waiting period,
and he is also obliged to spend on a divorced wife who is divorced an
irrevocable divorce if she is pregnant until her waiting period is
over ]i.e. until she gives birth[. Afterwards, it is her guardian who
is obliged to spend on her if she has no money as is the case before
she gets married; for more benefit in this regard, please refer to
Fatwa 88233. Also, you may refer to Fatwa 83934for the rights of a
divorced woman on her husband.
However, if we presume that a woman has no one to spend on her, then
in this case it is the Muslim community who is obliged to spend on
her. If the Islamic ruling is applied in a Muslim country, then it is
the treasury that will spend on such woman. As regards the children,
it is their father who is obliged to spend on them in any case as long
as they are young and needy and not able to earn their living.
Concerning what you attributed to some non-Muslim societies that they
give the woman more right than in Islam and that Islam neglects the
woman, then this is very wrong and it is an injustice to Islam. Is it
not enough an injustice in Christianity that a woman is not permitted
to separate from her husband and be divorced from him unless she
commits adultery? For more benefit on the status of woman in Islam
and how Islam preserved her rights, please refer to Fataawa 81237and
81205.
It seems, dear sister, that you want to judge Islam by some wrong
behaviors of Muslims or by some misconceptions that are presented to
you, and there is no doubt that this is not permissible. Therefore, we
advise you to be steadfast on you belief and supplicate Allaah to make
a way out for you to get out of hardship and enable you to take your
right from your husband who wronged you and who wronged Islam to which
he affiliates himself.
Finally, it should be noted that you have the right to take your
husband to the court so that you get your rights from him and the
rights of your children. So, we advise you to take the matter to the
authorities who are responsible for the issues of Muslims so that they
would repel the injustice of your husband from you.
Furthermore, you are obliged to repent to Allaah from such grave
statements by saying that you were wrong by embracing Islam because
such a statement may lead to apostasy and whoever apostates from Islam
he only harms himself and he loses his religion and his worldly life.

religion ]to disbelief[ and dies while he is a disbeliever - for
those, their deeds have become worthless in this world and the

applies to the 'idaah for girls who do not menstruate because they are

'Iddah )i.e. waiting period( and thus she is not included in that
verse; rather, she is included in the saying of Allaah The Almighty
)which means(: }O You who have believed, when you marry believing
women and then divorce them before you have touched them, then there
is not for you any waiting period to count concerning them. So provide
for them and give them a gracious release.{]Quran 33:49[

the Hadith, this can be for an offense as petty as merely being alone
with a man to whom she is not related. Kash-shaf of al-Zamkhshari
)Vol. 1, p. 525( - ]Muhammad said[ "Hang up your scourge where your
wife can see it" Are those hadith sahih?

The wording of the first Hadeeth that we have read inSeerat Ibn
Hishaamdoes not include detaining the woman in the house and its
wording is as follows: "...and they should not commit a clear
immorality. But if they do that, then Allaah has given you permission
to forsake them in bed and to hit them but not severely..." This
Hadeeth was originally reported in Saheeh Muslim on the authority
ofJaabirin the Farewell Khutbah )Sermon( and it is a sound Hadeeth.
Forsaking means turning one's back to his wife in bed while hitting
refers to light beating. That is not meant to inflict physical pain on
her )the recalcitrant wife(, but rather to discipline her in a
psychological manner. Islam actually calls for treating women kindly,
prohibits oppressing them or causing harm and assaulting them. Also,
if you go back to that Hadeeth, you will find that before the words
you have stated the Prophet, said: "Fear Allaah concerning women" and
after that he said, "Thus, treat women kindly."
There is absolutely no doubt that no religion has given women the
great status that Islam has given them. We have pointed that out in
the Fatwa 81237, so please refer to it.
As for the second Hadeeth which is the saying of the Prophet: "Hang
your whip where the members of your household can see it."

narration of this Hadeeth reads: "Hang your whip where the members of

Woman In Islam - 2
Education for Woman
But a more important question which requires our attention is, 'Does a
woman, who has been entrusted with such a delicate and sensitive task,
require any education or training herself?'
I think she requires itmore than the outside worker, but we
practically give no attention to this important issue. The parents try
to give her the best of secular education, but do not impart upon her
any religious knowledge. Her brothers feel obliged to protect her and
comfort her, but fail to realise their obligation to teach her about
religion.
Similarly, the husband would leave no stone unturned to keep her happy
and comfortable; he would give her abounding love and every good thing
in the world - except religion. Finally, when she becomes a mother,
her children would respect and serve her affectionately, but they too
would not speak of religion with her. This attitude actually stems
from a notion, deeply embedded in our subconscious, that she is an
inferior being … by creation.
When the mother of holy Mary vowed to devote her child to the service
of God, she was, in fact, expecting to deliver a son. Such a practice
was allowed in their religion. However, when against her expectation,
she gave birth to a daughter; she was extremely worried about the
fulfilment of her oath. The Quran refers to her anxiety by saying that
she did not know that her daughter was far superior to many sons and
had a high status with Allah. Her life was an explicit illustration of
Divine greatness and power, and a source of guidance for mankind.
According to the Quran, anyone (be it man or woman) who fulfils their
assigned duty isbetter than the one who doesn't- in the sight of
Allah.
Holy Prophet (PBUH) and his wives
About three quarters of human life relates to personal and private
affairs and is usually spent within the four walls of one's home. If
the chapter relating to specific feminine concerns is also added, it
assumes an even greater portion of the religion. As such, the greater
part of religion was narrated by the blessed wives of the holy
Prophet. He married eleven times and when he passed away, nine of his
wives were still alive.
Those who feel embarrassed at the criticism about his marriages have
really not studied his life. Had he married for the sake of marriage,
he would have marriedduring his prime, his youth. But he passed his
entire youth with Hadhrat Khadijah who was much elder to him. After
her death, when he remarried, he was over fifty years of age. Hadhrat
Aishah was the only virgin, his remaining wives were either widows,
divorced or freed captives. Some had brought their children from
previous husbands and they were also looked after by him. His holy
wives were theonly source to convey a major portion of the religionto
us. In their absence, the private life of the holy Prophet would have
remained obscure and concealed forever.
Equality
Islam has neither allowed the use of a woman as a model for
advertisement (as in the West) nor has it allowed for her to be
treated as a worthless captive slave (as in Hinduism or the Far East).

sorts of games, watch movies in theatres and go to the market for
shopping where they may talk and bargain with men during all of these

We have yet to see any religious verdict prohibiting women from
roaming the markets without Hijab, bareheaded, even though each one of
these acts is prohibited in the Shari'ah. Nobody is bothered where
they go or what they do. But if you guide one of them from a movie
theatre to a mosque, there is an immediate reaction against it,
everybody starts objecting to their religious activity.
In our country (Pakistan), a woman can do anything and everything she
likes; she can contest elections and rule the country. Many renowned
religious scholars have gathered around our present female Prime
Minister, and none has decreed that she cannot participate in
politics. But, if the same lady starts remembering her God, there
would be an instant uproar from the religious quarters that she is
doing wrong.

The Book and the Sunnah have not imprisoned a woman in her home.
During the time of the holy Prophet-saw, women participated even in

but, how would they do it, if they don't learn it? This is the
standard laid down by the Divine Book. She is neither a caged bird nor
a showbiz model, there is a middle way for her. She should know and
realise her responsibilities and acquire the ability to fulfil her
requirements honourably. She should neither become a dependent beggar
nor a free-lancer to rub shoulders with men.
MayAllahgrant us the capacity to understand properly and act accordingly! Ameen!
But a more important question which requires our attention is, 'Does a
woman, who has been entrusted with such a delicate and sensitive task,
require any education or training herself?'
I think she requires itmore than the outside worker, but we
practically give no attention to this important issue. The parents try
to give her the best of secular education, but do not impart upon her
any religious knowledge. Her brothers feel obliged to protect her and
comfort her, but fail to realise their obligation to teach her about
religion.
Similarly, the husband would leave no stone unturned to keep her happy
and comfortable; he would give her abounding love and every good thing
in the world - except religion. Finally, when she becomes a mother,
her children would respect and serve her affectionately, but they too
would not speak of religion with her. This attitude actually stems
from a notion, deeply embedded in our subconscious, that she is an
inferior being … by creation.
When the mother of holy Mary vowed to devote her child to the service
of God, she was, in fact, expecting to deliver a son. Such a practice
was allowed in their religion. However, when against her expectation,
she gave birth to a daughter; she was extremely worried about the
fulfilment of her oath. The Quran refers to her anxiety by saying that
she did not know that her daughter was far superior to many sons and
had a high status with Allah. Her life was an explicit illustration of
Divine greatness and power, and a source of guidance for mankind.
According to the Quran, anyone (be it man or woman) who fulfils their
assigned duty isbetter than the one who doesn't- in the sight of
Allah.
Holy Prophet (PBUH) and his wives
About three quarters of human life relates to personal and private
affairs and is usually spent within the four walls of one's home. If
the chapter relating to specific feminine concerns is also added, it
assumes an even greater portion of the religion. As such, the greater
part of religion was narrated by the blessed wives of the holy
Prophet. He married eleven times and when he passed away, nine of his
wives were still alive.
Those who feel embarrassed at the criticism about his marriages have
really not studied his life. Had he married for the sake of marriage,
he would have marriedduring his prime, his youth. But he passed his
entire youth with Hadhrat Khadijah who was much elder to him. After
her death, when he remarried, he was over fifty years of age. Hadhrat
Aishah was the only virgin, his remaining wives were either widows,
divorced or freed captives. Some had brought their children from
previous husbands and they were also looked after by him. His holy
wives were theonly source to convey a major portion of the religionto
us. In their absence, the private life of the holy Prophet would have
remained obscure and concealed forever.
Equality
Islam has neither allowed the use of a woman as a model for
advertisement (as in the West) nor has it allowed for her to be
treated as a worthless captive slave (as in Hinduism or the Far East).

path of worship and obedience, and to warn about the way leading to

Historic events are mentioned only as examples for mankind to draw
conclusions and to learn desired lessons. For that reason, it narrates
the conditions of various nations at the time when Prophets were sent
to them. It recounts the hardships endured by Prophets during their
efforts to steer their nations from darkness to the Light, and also
highlights the difference between the fate of the rejecters of Faith
and of the believers. TheQuranrecounts all this to enable the reader
to reflect and decide the best course for himself. Although theQuranic
narration of history is the most perfect and the absolute truth, yet
the mere narration of history has never been the subject ofQuran. Thus
it does not tell the whole story at one place, but refers to its
different events at appropriate places, so as to highlight the desired
lessons.
The holy verses mention the tyranny of Pharaoh, the events of Prophet
Musa'sflight to Madyan and his meeting with Prophet Shoaib. In
addition to the grand sacrifices and steadfastness of ProphetMusaand
the piety and greatness of Prophet Sho'aib-as, these verses mention an
extraordinary event which is full of tremendous wisdom and lessons for
human civilisation. As ProphetMusa-asapproached Madyan, he came upon a
well on the outskirts of the city where people brought their cattle to
drink. A large crowd of herdsmen with their cattle had gathered at the
well. Amongst these herdsmen, he found two young girls holding their
flock to one side. He was genuinely surprised to find these young
girls there and inquired about their odd presence in an all-male
business.
conditions and norms
They replied that they had also brought their flock for water and were
waiting for the others to leave the site before they could take their
turn. They added that their father was old and could not do this job
himself. In this small sentence,Allahhas laid down theconditions and
normsfor women to participate in various spheres of human activity
outside the four walls of their homes.
A woman ispermitted to step outof her house if there isnone else to
workoutside. Those women who have a man such as father, brother,
husband or son to work for them, are not required to go out of their
homes. But, if the male member(s) of the family are sick or old or
can't work for some reason, then women are permitted to go out and
work - under compulsion.
They must not starve to death within their homes, nor should they beg
or steal, but should adopt a respectable means to earn their living.
However, such women should not mix freely with the working men and
must always keep their proper distance. Thispoint has been
highlightedin the referred verses. The two young girls had come out of
their home under compulsion, but they waited aside for the male
shepherds to leave the site before they took their turn.
Here, two conditions have been laid down when women may come out of
their homes to work;
*.first, when there is no male member of the family to undertake this
obligation,
*.second, when they don't have any source of livelihood, and are
required to earn their bread by themselves.

Our society is infested with strange customs which have actually
beenborrowedfrom the Hindus andinjectedinto this Muslim culture. The
notion that women are inferior or worthless is amythof Hindu cult,
which assigns no significance to them - whatsoever. When the husband
dies, the wife must be cremated with him; otherwise, she would have to
spend her remaining life as an untouchable and detested creature. Even
her near ones won't speak to her and she would be sentenced to
solitary confinement, living a dog's life, performing menial jobs.
We have imported this concept from Hinduism. We too, highlight her
weaknesses emphatically and present her as a worthless and loathsome
member of the human race - thisattitude is certainly wrong.

Bliss in Paradise asa man would.
As human beings, both follow the same pattern in life. They are born
alike, exist alike, taste the same death, would be raised in the same
manner and would likewise face the consequences of their deeds. They
have been created with different physical, mental and psychological
capabilities. Their requirements and responsibilities, therefore, are
also different. However, both of them are of equal importance as
members of the human race.
A Misconception
On the plea that there has not been a female Prophet, some consider
women as inferior. However, the advocates of this argument tend to
forget that, althoughAllahcreated a Prophet without father, there is
no evidence of amotherlessProphet in the entire human race. Except for
the first human being and a Prophet, whomAllahcreated without a father
or a mother, there is no other instance of a Prophet being born
without a mother.
Without exception, everyProphet was born and brought upin the warm,
loving lap of his mother. If she was such a detestable creature,
thenwhywas every Prophet and Messenger born and brought up in her lap?
Yes, she is not a Prophet but isn't shethe mother of a Prophet? Isn't
she hisloving daughter? Doesn't she share his life ashis wife?
In Paradise, the residence of the holy Prophet will be located at the
most blessed and sublime station. There would be no other house or
person in the vicinity, except his holy wives who will also be
livingwithhim in his house. So how is a woman bad or inferior? In
fact, we have borrowed thisfalse notionfrom the Hindus of the Indian
subcontinent.

The natural division of duties and responsibilities of men and women
can be illustrated by the following example.
Suppose a person wants to grow a beautiful orchard, for which he
requires two workers. The first should be physically strong to
undertake hard work such as tilling the earth, planting trees, digging
water channels, etc. He should be strong enough to protect the garden
and work outside at his own.
The second worker, required to look after the plants, may not be as
strong, but should be more caring and loving than the first one. This
worker, by natural instinct, must understand and care for the
requirements and needs of each budding plant and blossoming flower.
This worker's love should so distribute the food and nourishment that
plants should neither die of shortage nor of excess.
The relatively frail body of the second worker must possess a strong
but sensitive and tender heart, because the job is not to protect the
garden but nurture the plants fondly and tenderly.
In my opinion, this task is more delicate and subtle.Allahhas
entrusted thisdelicate and sensitive
responsibilityofraisingandeducatingthe human race to a woman, whilst
the job of aman is to earn and protectit; this is the natural division
of their responsibilities. Both are equally responsible, and I think
the job of a woman is more important.

Why Marrying More Than One Permitted?
Islam is the last and final word of Allah (SWT), ending the series of
His messages to mankind. It therefore came with ageneral lawsuitable
for all times and places, and for thewhole of humanity. It did not
legislate for the city dweller only, while neglecting the nomad, nor
for the cold regions while ignoring the hot ones, nor for one
particular period of time, forgetting later times and the generations
to come.
Islam recognizes theneeds and interests of all people, of individuals
as well as groups. And among human beings one finds that individual
who has a strong desire for children but whose wife is barren,
chronically ill, or has some other problem. Would it not be more
considerate on her part and better for him to marry a second wife who
can bear him children, while retaining the first wife with all her
rights guaranteed? Then there may also be the case of a man whose
desire for sex is strong, while his wife has little desire for it, or
who is chronically ill, has long menstrual periods, or the like, while
her husband unable to restrain his sexual urge. Should it not be
permitted to him to marry a second wife instead of his hunting around
for girlfriends? There are also times whenwomen outnumber men, as for
example after wars which often decimate the ranks of men.
In such a situation it is in the interests of the society and of women
themselves that they become co-wives to a man instead of spending
their entire lives without marriage, deprived of the peace, affection,
andprotection of marital lifeand the joy of motherhood for which they
naturally yearn with all their hearts. Only three possible
alternatives exist for such surplus women who are not married as first
wives:
1.to pass their whole lives in bitter deprivation,
2.to become sex objects and playthings for lecherous men; or
3.to become co-wives to men who are able to support more than one wife
and who will treat them kindly.
Unquestionably, thelast alternative is the correct solution, ahealing
remedyfor this problem, and that is the judgement of Islam:
"And Who is better than Allah in judgement, for a people who have
certain faith?" ( Surah 5: Verse 50)
For this is the Islamic "polygamy" which people in the West consider
so abhorrent and to which they react with such hostility, while their
own men are free to have any number of girlfriends, without
restriction and without any legal or moral accountability, either in
respect to the woman or to the children she may bear as a result of
this irreligious and immoral plurality of extra-marital relationships.
Let the two alternatives—plurality of wives or plurality of illicit
affairs — be compared, and let people ask themselves which is the
proper course of action, and which of the two groups is correctly
guided!

their entire lives without marriage, deprived of the peace, affection,
andprotection of marital lifeand the joy of motherhood for which they
naturally yearn with all their hearts. Only three possible
alternatives exist for such surplus women who are not married as first
wives:
1.to pass their whole lives in bitter deprivation,
2.to become sex objects and playthings for lecherous men; or
3.to become co-wives to men who are able to support more than one wife
and who will treat them kindly.
Unquestionably, thelast alternative is the correct solution, ahealing
remedyfor this problem, and that is the judgement of Islam:
"And Who is better than Allah in judgement, for a people who have
certain faith?" ( Surah 5: Verse 50)
For this is the Islamic "polygamy" which people in the West consider
so abhorrent and to which they react with such hostility, while their
own men are free to have any number of girlfriends, without
restriction and without any legal or moral accountability, either in
respect to the woman or to the children she may bear as a result of
this irreligious and immoral plurality of extra-marital relationships.
Let the two alternatives—plurality of wives or plurality of illicit
affairs — be compared, and let people ask themselves which is the
proper course of action, and which of the two groups is correctly
guided!

our mothers used to use. Besides, the minced meat that comes out of
the manual mincer has a special taste that I like and I think that the
electric mincer will not give the same taste. Moreover, you are a
housewife and have enough time that would make it possible to use the
manual mincer and you will not need to use the electric one that is
used by working women because they do not have enough time. Thus, I
totally refuse to buy this electric mincer.' Here, the wife looked sad
and distressed. She did not reply and walked on helplessly with her
husband."

him among all creatures. Allaah The Almighty inspired man to use his
mind in inventing useful things that would make life easier. In the
course of progress, man invented many things that made his life easier
on earth and saved his time and effort. Therefore, our grandmothers
and mothers used the manual mincer and considered it at that time to
be an amazing invention as they used to mince meat and beans with a
mortar or a grinder that were common at that time. Thus, using the
manual mincer at that time was considered great progress and I think
that if the electric mincer had been invented at their time, they
would have hastened to buy it. Therefore, why should we stick to an
old invention that does not save time or effort?

different feelings when shifting from one stage of life to another. It
is like his feeling whenever he undergoes a new experience, meets new
people or visits new places. Thus, renewal is considered a permanent
and necessary need for every person to drive him/her forward. However,
some people may exaggerate in seeking a new look or a new appearance.
The desire for renewal may prompt one to seek an eye-catching
appearance even if this appearance contradicts the general taste or
customs of the society or even the teachings of one's religion.
This reveals the importance of caution and wisdom when choosing new
things to avoid the diminution of one's credit of esteem and
admiration in people's eyes, which might be caused by an unrestrained
pursuit of new things. Caution and wisdom also help one maintain the

balance between one's desire and what he has to achieve of the noble

severe burns, for example, which led to the deformation of the skin of
their body or their face, can have cosmetic surgery to maintain their
psychological health and be able to face society and deal with those
around them easily and without embarrassment."
'Imaad Ad-Deen Zaghlool, a chemist, states, "If the New Look means
changing and renewing one's outward appearance and imitating the West
in this regard in a way that does not suit our customs and traditions,
then this is to be rejected. However, if it is an attempt to change
and develop man to what is better, whether in his appearance or
character, or if it aims at developing his skills, then it is to be
accepted. If the New Look occurs in a way that suits our society, it
will be beneficial in combating boredom and will lead man to develop
his character and skills. It is important and necessary for a person

Al-Mann )Reminding others of one’s favors for them( is a Characteristic of the Miser
The Meaning of the WordMann
The word Mann may be used to mean interruption and cessation, as in
the saying of Allaah The Almighty:}For they will have a reward
uninterrupted.{]Quran 95:6[ It may also mean doing what is good.
Another derivative of this word is the word "Mannah", which means a
great blessing, as in the saying of Allaah The Almighty:}Certainly did
Allaah confer ]great[ favor upon the believers.{]Quran
3:164[Al-Manncould also be done by words and it means reminding others
of one's favors to them, a thing that is dispraised among people
except in cases of ingratitude.
Some verses that use the wordMannare those where Allaah The Almighty

}And do not confer favor to acquire more.{]Quran 74:6[
}And is this a favor of which you remind me - that you have enslaved
the Children of Israel?{]Quran 26:22[
}They consider it a favor to you that they have accepted Islam. Say,
"Do not consider your Islam a favor to me. Rather, Allaah has
conferred favor upon you that He has guided you to the faith, if you
should be truthful."{]Quran 49:17[
}O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with
reminders or injury as does one who spends his wealth ]only[ to be
seen by the people and does not believe in Allaah and the Last
Day.{]Quran 2:264[
Al-Qurtubi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said that reminding others
of one's favors for them is usually done by a miserly and conceited
person. The miser always feels that what he gives is great, even if it
is something insignificant. Also, the conceited person tends to
glorify himself and feels that he is doing others a great favor by
giving to them. The reasons for all this are ignorance and
forgetfulness of the favors of Allaah. If these people had thought
carefully, they would have realized that the taker is the one who does
them a favor because of the reward that they obtain for giving to him.
In general, there are two possible interpretations of reminding others
of favors:
The firstis doing something good to others without boasting of what
one did. For example, it may be said that someone did another one a
favor by rescuing him.
The secondis when someone keeps reminding others of his favors for
them and does this numerous times, to the extent that he ruins and
squanders what he did.
The first type is good and it includes all the favors of Allaah that
He bestows upon man, while the second one is bad as it is usually said
in order to confirm and announce the favors, or to boast of what one
gives until it would reach the taker, who would then be hurt to hear
this. In this case, reminding others of one's favors would be a grave
major sin.

favors for them, are:
In aHadeethon the authority of Abu Tharr, may Allaah be pleased with
him, the Prophet,sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:"Allaah will not
talk to three types of people on the Day of Judgment: the one who
gives people things in order to remind them of his favors upon them,
the one who sells goods by making false oaths, and the one who allows
his lower garment to hang low ]below his ankles[."]Muslim[

him, the Prophet,sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:"Allaah will not

The meaning of:"The one who reminds others of his favors for them will
not enter Paradise":
Proven reported citations were narrated on the authority of the
Prophet,sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, but their meaning was
misunderstood by two sects. The Al-Mu'tazilah and Al-Khawaarij, on one
hand, claimed that the one who commits a major sin and dies before
repenting would be eternally in Hell and would never enter Paradise.
On the other hand, Al-Murji'ah denied these citations all together as
they were ignorant of their meanings. Ibn Khuzaymah, may Allaah have
mercy upon him, pointed this out and said that these reported
citations could mean one of two things:
The firstis that the one who commits this sin would not enter some of
the gardens of Paradise as the Prophet,sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam,
told us that there are many gardens in Paradise and each one of them
is called Paradise.
The secondis that every threat to the true monotheists in the Quran
andSunnahis dependent on the will of Allaah, as He may forgive and
pardon and save the sinner from His torment. Allaah The Almighty Says
)what means(:}Indeed, Allaah does not forgive association with Him,
but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.{]Quran 4:11[
Some scholars have stated that when this type of threat is made
against the sinful monotheists, it could mean that they would not
enter Paradise with the first group who would enter it. However, they
will be delayed and might be tormented in Hell, but in the end they
will enter Paradise because they were monotheists.
Some traditions and sayings of scholars on the act of reminding others
of one's favors:
It was narrated by Ibn Abu Haatim, may Allaah have mercy upon him,
that Ibn 'Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, said:"]The
Hadeeth[:'No one who reminds others of his favors for them will enter
Paradise,'was very difficult for me to understand until I found the
verses that deal with these type of people in the Quran. Allaah The
Almighty Says ]what means[:}Do not invalidate your charities with
reminders or injury.{]Quran 2:264["
In his commentary on the verse )which means(:}Indeed, from their Lord,
that Day, they will be partitioned,{]Quran 83:15[ Abu Mulaykah
Az-Zammaari, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said that this refers to
the one who reminds others of his favors for them and the arrogant who
unlawfully takes people's money through making false oaths.
In his commentary on the verse where Allaah The Almighty Says )what
means(:}Oyou who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with
reminders or injury,{]Quran 2:264[, Adh-Dhahhaak, may Allaah have
mercy upon him, said that the one who gives a charity then reminds the
taker of his charity or hurts him, would therefore not get a reward.
Allaah The Almighty likens what that person does to a large smooth
stone upon which there is dust and which is hit by a downpour that
leaves it bare. Allaah The Exalted removes the reward of the one who
reminds people of his charity in the same way the downpour removes the
dust of the stone.
Dear Muslim, reminding others with one's favors for them is a reason
for being inflicted with the wrath of Allaah and for being expelled
from His mercy. It stirs bitter feelings, invalidates good deeds and
might even cancel them out totally. Allaah will not look at the one
who has this ailment, neither will He talk to him on the Day of
Judgment. So, beware of this disease as it is a characteristic of
miserly people.
The word Mann may be used to mean interruption and cessation, as in
the saying of Allaah The Almighty:}For they will have a reward
uninterrupted.{]Quran 95:6[ It may also mean doing what is good.
Another derivative of this word is the word "Mannah", which means a
great blessing, as in the saying of Allaah The Almighty:}Certainly did
Allaah confer ]great[ favor upon the believers.{]Quran
3:164[Al-Manncould also be done by words and it means reminding others
of one's favors to them, a thing that is dispraised among people
except in cases of ingratitude.
Some verses that use the wordMannare those where Allaah The Almighty
Says )what means(:
}And do not confer favor to acquire more.{]Quran 74:6[
}And is this a favor of which you remind me - that you have enslaved
the Children of Israel?{]Quran 26:22[
}They consider it a favor to you that they have accepted Islam. Say,
"Do not consider your Islam a favor to me. Rather, Allaah has
conferred favor upon you that He has guided you to the faith, if you
should be truthful."{]Quran 49:17[
}O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with
reminders or injury as does one who spends his wealth ]only[ to be
seen by the people and does not believe in Allaah and the Last
Day.{]Quran 2:264[
Al-Qurtubi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said that reminding others
of one's favors for them is usually done by a miserly and conceited
person. The miser always feels that what he gives is great, even if it
is something insignificant. Also, the conceited person tends to
glorify himself and feels that he is doing others a great favor by
giving to them. The reasons for all this are ignorance and
forgetfulness of the favors of Allaah. If these people had thought
carefully, they would have realized that the taker is the one who does
them a favor because of the reward that they obtain for giving to him.
In general, there are two possible interpretations of reminding others
of favors:
The firstis doing something good to others without boasting of what
one did. For example, it may be said that someone did another one a
favor by rescuing him.
The secondis when someone keeps reminding others of his favors for
them and does this numerous times, to the extent that he ruins and
squanders what he did.
The first type is good and it includes all the favors of Allaah that
He bestows upon man, while the second one is bad as it is usually said
in order to confirm and announce the favors, or to boast of what one
gives until it would reach the taker, who would then be hurt to hear
this. In this case, reminding others of one's favors would be a grave
major sin.
SomeHadeeths, which dispraise the act of reminding others of one's
favors for them, are:
In aHadeethon the authority of Abu Tharr, may Allaah be pleased with
him, the Prophet,sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:"Allaah will not
talk to three types of people on the Day of Judgment: the one who
gives people things in order to remind them of his favors upon them,
the one who sells goods by making false oaths, and the one who allows
his lower garment to hang low ]below his ankles[."]Muslim[
In aHadeethon the authority of Ibn 'Umar, may Allaah be pleased with
him, the Prophet,sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:"Allaah will not
look at three types of people on the Day of Judgment: the one who is
undutiful to his parents, the woman who imitates men and the Dayyooth
]the man who approves of the indecency of his womenfolk and who is
void of jealousy[. Moreover, three types of people will not enter
Paradise: the one who is undutiful to his parents, the one who is
addicted to alcoholand the one who reminds others of his favors for
them."]An-Nasaa'I, Al-Albaani -Saheeh[
In aHadeethon the authority of 'Abdullaah ibn Abi Afwa, may Allaah be
pleased with him, who said that some of the Arabs said to the
Prophet,sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam,"O Messenger of Allaah! We
reverted to Islam and did not fight you as other tribes did."Hence,
the following verse was revealed )which means(:}They consider it a
favor to you that they have accepted Islam.{]Quran 49:17[]Ibn
Al-Munthir, At-Tabaraani and Ibn Mardawayh with a good chain of
narrators[
In aHadeethon the authority of Abu Bakr, may Allaah be pleased with
him, the Prophet,sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:"The deceiver,
the one who reminds others of his favors for them and the miser will
not enter Paradise"]At-Tirmithi,HasanGhareeb[
The meaning of:"The one who reminds others of his favors for them will
not enter Paradise":
Proven reported citations were narrated on the authority of the
Prophet,sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, but their meaning was
misunderstood by two sects. The Al-Mu'tazilah and Al-Khawaarij, on one
hand, claimed that the one who commits a major sin and dies before
repenting would be eternally in Hell and would never enter Paradise.
On the other hand, Al-Murji'ah denied these citations all together as
they were ignorant of their meanings. Ibn Khuzaymah, may Allaah have
mercy upon him, pointed this out and said that these reported
citations could mean one of two things:
The firstis that the one who commits this sin would not enter some of
the gardens of Paradise as the Prophet,sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam,
told us that there are many gardens in Paradise and each one of them
is called Paradise.
The secondis that every threat to the true monotheists in the Quran
andSunnahis dependent on the will of Allaah, as He may forgive and
pardon and save the sinner from His torment. Allaah The Almighty Says
)what means(:}Indeed, Allaah does not forgive association with Him,
but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.{]Quran 4:11[
Some scholars have stated that when this type of threat is made
against the sinful monotheists, it could mean that they would not
enter Paradise with the first group who would enter it. However, they
will be delayed and might be tormented in Hell, but in the end they
will enter Paradise because they were monotheists.
Some traditions and sayings of scholars on the act of reminding others
of one's favors:
It was narrated by Ibn Abu Haatim, may Allaah have mercy upon him,
that Ibn 'Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, said:"]The
Hadeeth[:'No one who reminds others of his favors for them will enter
Paradise,'was very difficult for me to understand until I found the
verses that deal with these type of people in the Quran. Allaah The
Almighty Says ]what means[:}Do not invalidate your charities with
reminders or injury.{]Quran 2:264["
In his commentary on the verse )which means(:}Indeed, from their Lord,
that Day, they will be partitioned,{]Quran 83:15[ Abu Mulaykah
Az-Zammaari, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said that this refers to
the one who reminds others of his favors for them and the arrogant who
unlawfully takes people's money through making false oaths.
In his commentary on the verse where Allaah The Almighty Says )what
means(:}Oyou who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with
reminders or injury,{]Quran 2:264[, Adh-Dhahhaak, may Allaah have
mercy upon him, said that the one who gives a charity then reminds the
taker of his charity or hurts him, would therefore not get a reward.
Allaah The Almighty likens what that person does to a large smooth
stone upon which there is dust and which is hit by a downpour that
leaves it bare. Allaah The Exalted removes the reward of the one who
reminds people of his charity in the same way the downpour removes the
dust of the stone.
Dear Muslim, reminding others with one's favors for them is a reason
for being inflicted with the wrath of Allaah and for being expelled
from His mercy. It stirs bitter feelings, invalidates good deeds and
might even cancel them out totally. Allaah will not look at the one
who has this ailment, neither will He talk to him on the Day of
Judgment. So, beware of this disease as it is a characteristic of
miserly people.
