I babysit two of our grandchildren every Thursday and I like to do
different things with them so they can have fun. This past Thursday I
decided to take the on a bus ride around our city. I havenever been on
a bus around town before,I never had any reason to ride the bus. It
was so interesting to see all the different people who got on thebus.
I was wandering what their story was. This bus ride humbled me,and my
heart wentout to the people who don't have a choice between riding the
bus or driving their car.

-:Hadees:-:-> Modern Historical Methodology vs. Hadeeth Methodology

The study of ahadeeth is one thatgoes back centuries and has been the
subject of much discussion among both Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
Some scholars deem the collections of ahadeeth as unauthentic and
something to be disregarded, while others claim the opposite. Where
exactly does the truth lie? As a starting point, it is helpful to
examine criticism according to hadeeth methodology compared to
criticism according to modern,western historical methodology.
Therefore the purpose of this paper shall be to first explain the
general guidelines for authenticating and verifying historical
sources, then to explainthe general guidelines used in authenticating
and verifying ahadeeth, and finally to compare the two processes.
Modern, Western Historical Methodology
When events occur, they can be known by contemporaries who then pass
on their knowledge and understanding (Lucey 20). Indaily life, people
accept that knowledge of events can be passed on from the witnesses of
those events, and that they can be transmitted exactly. Indeed, ina
court of law, through the testimonies of witnesses to a particular
event, facts are established beyond a reasonable doubt (Lucey 22).
According to one historian, "…Testimony, sufficient, reliable
testimony, is a source of unimpeachable, indisputable knowledge of
historical events" (Lucey 20). It is from the reliable testimony of
contemporaries of events that historical knowledge is derived (Lucey
18). Therefore, the aim of historical methodology is to determine if
the various testimonies that reach us today can be accepted as sound
evidence.
Once a historian has collected hissources—anything that directly or
indirectly provides information about a particular event (e.g. a book,
a scroll, a broken piece of pottery, a picture, a radio clip, an oral
tradition)—he must then evaluate them using the techniques of
criticism . These historical sources or "witnesses" provide
information or testimony. It is the role of external criticism to
establish the authenticity of a source (the fact of testimony) and its
integrity (the freedom from corruption during transmission). In
comparison, internal criticism is concerned with establishing the true
meaning of a testimony and the credibility of a witness (Lucey23).
Ultimately, the basic principles of source criticism are what lead to
the establishment offacts, or to the debunking of previously
established ones (Marwick 196).

The great Companion 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab (ra) came to Islam after a
terrible fight with his sister,when he caught her and her husband Zaid
reciting Quran, and he flew into a terrible rage and beat them both.
Then he felt shame and regret; he demanded to see the manuscript they
had been reading. Upon reading it, he was deeply shaken by its beauty,
and the nobility of its call. He went straight to Al-Safa, where the
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was meeting with his companions. He asked
permission to enter, then declared his conversion in front of the holy
Prophet (pbuh). 'Umar went on to become one of the Prophet's closest
and companions, and then the second Khalifah of the Muslim world after
the death of the Prophet (pbuh).
Many of the Sahabah went through terrible hardships in the name of
Islam. Many were tortured. One, SalmanAl-Farisi, left behind a life of
comfort and nobility in order to search the world for the truth,
finally endingup as a slave before the word came to him of the Prophet
that he had sought for so long.
My point is not to say that they suffered, so be patient. This has
been said voluminously. My point is that their suffering led them to
astonishing places spiritually. Because they were sincere and pure of
heart, their suffering purified them, and raised them to a kind of
generational nobility unseen in human history. Materially, they
literally became the masters of the world, but only because they first
proved that they did not desire it. Even from their position as rulers
theywere humble as the dust, like 'Umar, who, as commander of the
second largest empire in the world, ate bread made from coarse flour,
and wore patched clothes.
There is a story told by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in a saheeh hadith:
"Three persons from the tribe of Bani Israel got together and started
out on a journey. On the way, clouds gathered above them and it
started to pourwith rain and so they sought shelter in a nearby cave.
Suddenly, a large boulder slipped and blocked the entrance to the
cave, trapping the three inside and transforming the day into a dark
night for them. They had no other alternative except to turn to Allahn
(SWT) for help.
"Let us use our sincere deeds as a means to obtaindeliverance from
this predicament," suggested one of them. All the others agreed with
the suggestion.
One of them said, "O' Lord! You are aware that I have an extremely
attractive cousin and that I was infatuated and obsessed with her. One
day, finding her alone, I took hold of her and wanted to satisfy my
carnal desires, when she spoke out to me saying: O' My cousin! Fear
Allah (SWT) and do not harm my chastity. Hearing this, I crushed my
lustful tendencies and decided against the evil act. O' Lord!If that
deed of mine had been out of absolute sincerity and only for the
purpose of acquiring Your pleasure, deliver us from grief and
perdition."
Suddenly they witnessed that the huge boulder had moved away a little,
faintlybrightening up the interior of the cave.
The second person spoke out, "O' Lord! You know that I had a father
and a mother, so old that their bodies had bent over due to their
excessive age, and that I used to tend to themregularly. One night,
having brought them their food, I observed that both of them were
asleep. I passed the entire night near them, the food in hand, without
waking them up for fear of disturbing them. O' Lord! If this deed of
mine had beenonly for the sake of Your pleasure and happiness, open up
a way for us and grant us salvation."
As he completed his speech, the group noticed that the boulder had
moved aside a little more.

bread. One beggar was given a loaf and sent away.
The other was kept waitingand waiting. At length,

A man once came to al-Ḥasan al-Baṣri expressinghis sorrow at the loss
of hisson. Al-Ḥasan said to him, "Did your son ever travel,
leaving you behind?" The man said: "Yes, he would travel more than
actually being around (at home)." At this al-Ḥasan said to him, "Then
considerhim traveling , because he'snever left you alone in a time
in which your reward was greater than it is now."
The man said, "Abu Sa'īd, you've lessened the sorrowof my son's departure."
Let this be a comfort to all those who have lost someone, whoever that
person maybe. May Allah jalla wa 'ala bless us all with patience and
understanding, and grant our deceased ones the very
best of Jannah without questioning. Ameen.

Story - Contemplating the Case of the Human without Senses

Consider the case of the human who is deprived of the sense of sight.
Think how grave is his bereavement. He does not see where to put his
step, does not see what is in front of him, does not distinguish
colours and agreeable and disagreeablesights; he does not benefit from
the scholarship of books; he is unable to reflect and contemplate the
wonders of Allah's creation. He cannot take note of much of what is
advantageous or harmful to him; he may not be ableto avoid falling in
a hole in his way, nor protect himself from a wild animal,or an enemy
intent on assailing and killing him. He cannot flee if attacked, but
will have to beat the mercy of his adversary. Hadit not been for
special care from Allah, in some was similar to that given to the
newborn, he would be much more likely to perish than to survive. He is
like a mass of flesh and bones, and that is why Allah promises him, if
he is resigned and patient, that he will be rewarded with Paradise. It
is an illustration of the immensity of the Lord's kindness that He
compensated a blind person's vision with a mental vision, so tat you
see that he has the sharpest intuition and insight. Another grace is
that he enjoys clarity of objective, so that he is not distracted or
scatter-brained. In this way he can enjoy his life, and take careof
what is good for him, and is not depressed, indignant or frustrated.
This I true of those born blind. As for the one who lost his sight
after he had been sighted, he is like all those who have had
catastrophes, who have transferred from a state of well being to one
of suffering. He takes it very hard, because he is barred from what e
had always enjoyed of sights, scenes, and ways of using his vision;
his case is different.

Health - Beat the heat, not at the cost your health

The rising mercury level and the dry spell have resulted in an
increase in the number of water-borne disease cases being reported in
Bangalore hospitals.
Doctors, who have seen an increase in gastroenteritis cases in the
last few weeks,warned that if people didn't take precautions, they
were likely to land up with jaundice, hepatitis A and typhoid, apart
from gastroenteritis.
While consumption of contaminated water was said to be the main cause,
food prepared in unhygienic conditions and cut fruits sold on the
roadsides were also the culprits, they said.
According to Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) project
coordinator (communicable diseases) Manoranjan Hegde, 193 cases of
gastroenteritis hadbeen reported in the city since January. Of these,
70 were reported from March 1 to 25.
The recent death of a two-year-old boy from Venkatswamy Gardens in
Jagjivan Ram Nagar , allegedly due to water contamination, was the
only gastroenteritis death, according to officials.
Although the numbers are a little lower than those reported during the
same period last year, doctors advised people to take precautions to
stay safe.
Not an outbreak
Asserting that it was not an outbreak, Mr. Hegde said most of the
sporadic cases were reported from areas in east Bangalore such as
Murphy Town, D.J. Halli, Tannery Road, Neelsandra and Koramangala,
apart from Jagjivan Ram Nagar and surrounding areas.
Doctors at the State-run Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, Victoria
Hospital and K.C. General Hospital are also regularly seeing patients
with complaints ofdiarrhoea, vomiting and dehydration.
"We get at least seven or eight patients with symptoms of
gastroenteritis every day. But, most of them are treated as
out-patients. Even those who were admitted have recovered," said K.R.
Ravindra, associate professor, Department of Medicine at Victoria
Hospital.
A senior doctor at the Bowring Hospital said at least three patients
came with complaints of diarrhoea every day.
Symptoms
Gastroenteritis is the frequent passage of loose stools.
It is most often caused by infection from bacteria such as E. coli and
Vibrio cholerae, or by viruses and parasites such as giardia.
Symptoms include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps,
followed by dehydration.
Dr. Ravindra advised people to drink water that was boiled and cooled.
People must watch what they eat, he said, adding that "it is advisable
to eat hot home-cooked food."
Cut fruits
BBMP Deputy Commissioner (Health) Y.M.Ramachandra Murthy, who claimed
the palike had started creating awarenesson the diseases in vulnerable
areas, said it was difficult to control the sale of fruits on the
roadsides.
"Eating cut fruits from roadside vendors that are either not washed
properlyor are washed with impurewater can be harmful. Our efforts to
check this risk has been met with stiff resistance from the local
people," he said.
Citing an example, he said: "When we tried to check the sale of cut
fruits in the vicinity of the Vidhana Soudha and the High
Court,government employees objected and demanded that the vendors be
allowed to operate from there."
"One should eat fresh fruitsonly after washing them thoroughly and
fruit juices are healthy only when prepared under hygienic
conditions," he said.

East Asian Children Most at Risk from Myopia - Study

Researchers from the Australian National University who conducted a
study across the globe found that nearly 90 per cent of school-leavers
haveshort sightedness.
They claim that the main reason for the problem is that children in
East Asia spend several hours studying and have very less outdoor
exercise. They found that because of tedious study habits the
children's eyes get strainedleading to several other eye-related
problems.
The study claims that the Asian studying habits are solely responsible
for the problem. Scientists said that children should be allowed to
play outdoors at least two hours a day or else they will get myopia or
several other eye-related problems.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abu Qatada Al-Aslami: That his father said,
"One day I was sitting with some of the Prophet's companions on the
way to Mecca. Allah's Apostle was ahead of us. All of my companions
werein the state of Ihram while I was a non-Muhrim. They saw an onager
while I was busy repairing my shoes, so they did not tell me about it
but they wished I had seen it. By chance I looked up and saw it. So, I
turned to the horse, saddled it and rode on it, forgetting to take the
spear and the whip. I askedthem if they could hand over to me the whip
and the spear but they said, 'No, by Allah, we shall not help you in
that in any way.' I became angry and got down from the horse, picked
up both the things and rode the horse again. I attacked the onager and
slaughtered it, and broughtit (after it had been dead). They took it
(cooked some of it) and started eating it, but they doubted whether it
was allowed for them to eat it or not, as they were in the state of
Ihram. So, we proceeded and I hid with me one of its fore-legs. When
we met Allah's Apostle and asked him about the case, he asked, 'Do you
have a portion of it with you?' I replied in the affirmative and gave
him that fleshy fore-leg which he ate completely while he was inthe
state of Ihram/

"And whoever is conscious of Allah, He will make for him a way out
(from every difficulty). And He will provide for him from (sources) he
never could imagine. And whoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will
suffice him. Verily, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Indeed Allah
has sent a measure for all things." (Quran: 65/2-3)

Abu Darda narrated that Rasool Allah said, "Should I not tell you of
such a thinga which are the best and purest deeds in the court of your
Lord, high in ranks (darajat), better for you then spending gold and
silver (in Allah's path), and better than slaying the neck of the
enemy during war? The Sahaba said, "Yes, Oh Rasool Allah! ."He said,
"It is Zikr of Allah." (Tirmizi)
Abu Huraira narrated that Rasool Allah said, "Any gathering in which
people sit and do not do Zikr of Allah and do not send Durood upon
their Prophet is of loss for them.If Allah wills, give them azab
(punishment) and if wills, forgive them." (Tirmizi)
Abu Huraira narrated that Rasool Allah said, "Allah Tabaraka wa Ta'ala
says when a person moveshis lips for Zikr of Allah, I am with him. "

Abu Huraira narrated that Rasool Allah said, "Allah Tabaraka wa Ta'ala
says I am closer to my slave than his supposition of which he keeps of
me. And when he/her does Zikrof Allah, I am with him/her. If he does
Zikr in his heart, I do his Zikr nearMY proximity (closeness) and if
he does Zikr in a gathering, I mention him in a gathering Afdhal
(better) than it. (Bukhari)
Abu Musa Ash'ari narrated that Rasool Allah said, "He/She who doesZikr
of Allah and he/she who doesn't, their example is of like an alive and
a dead. (Bukhari)
Abu Huraira said that Rasool Allah said, "The angels look for those
who do Zikr of Allah on the paths. When they find those who are doing
Zikr of Allah then they call eachother, "Come, your desiredhas been
found." Then those angels cover those are doing Zikr of Allah up to
the skies of this world with their wings. And Allah Rabbul Izzat says
about them to those angels "What are my slavedoing?" Though Allah
knows more than those angels. The angels say, "Those people are doing
your Tasbeeh, Tahmeed, and Tamjeed." Rab Ta'ala says, "Have they seen
me?" The angels say, "We swear by your pure Entity, they have not seen
you." Rab Ta'ala says to them, "If they had seen me then what would be
their state?" The angels say, "If they could've seen you then they
would do your Tamjeed and your Tasbeeh even more."
Rab Ta'ala says, "What slaves are asking from me?" The angels say,
"They are asking for Jannat from you." Rab Ta'ala says, "Have they
seen Jannat?" The angels say, "We swear by Your Pure Entity, they have
not seen Jannat." Rab Ta'ala says, "If they had seen Jannat then what
would be their state?" The angelssay, "If these people had seen jannat
then their greed, desire, and inclination for it would increase. Rab
Ta'ala says, "What else are they doing?" The angels say, "They are
seeking refuge." Rab Ta'ala says, "From what are they seeking refuge?"
The angels say, "They are seeking refuge from Hell." Rab Ta'ala
says,"Have they seen Hell?" Theangels say, "Oh Rab, we swear by Your
Pure Entity,they have not seen it." RabTa'ala, "If they had seen it
then what would be their state?" The angels say, "If they had seen it
then they would run even further away from it and fear it even more.
Rab Ta'ala says, "angels, Be witnesses that I have forgiven them." An
angel says, "There is one person amongst them who is not part of those
who do Zikr, he is there for some necessity of his/her." Rab Ta'ala
says, "These are such people that even those sitting among them are
not deprived." (Bukhari)
Anas narrated that Rasool Allah said, "When you pass by gardens of
paradise, eat fruits of them. The Sahaba said, "What are the gardens
of Paradise?" He said, "The gatherings of Zikr." (Tirmizi)
Abu Huraira narrated Abu Saeed Khudri said that Rasool Allah said,
"Whenever a Jama'at (a group of people) sits for Zikr of Allah, the
angels surround it. Blessing covers that Jama'at. And peace and calm
descends on them. And Allah mentions them to the angels present in HIS
court. (Muslim)
Ameer Muaviah narrated that the Rasool Allah passed by a Jama'at and
asked them, "Why have you gathered here?" Somepeople of the Jammat
replied, "We have gathered here for the Zikr and Hamd of Allah because
by guiding us towards Islam He did favor on us. Rasool Allah said, "By
Allah, have you gathered only for this (purpose)?" They said, "By
Allah, we have gathered here only for such purpose./

The symptoms that you may have with low potassium can be many and you
may not realize that they are the symptoms of having lowpotassium. The
most common symptoms of having low potassium are: muscle cramps or
muscle spasms which can at times be severe, feeling like you have very
weak muscles and feel like you can not move them right, your muscles
hurt and you may not know why they are hurting.
More symptoms of having low potassium are: your heart will feel funny
but you do not know why or you will have heart palpitations and also
sometimes a heartbeat that is not regular, heart rhythm problems also.
You may also feel very tired and not feel like doing anything. You may
also feel very weak almost like you have the flu with low potassium
levels in your body. You may also be veryconstipated and be very
bloated in your stomachfrom the low potassium.You can also have
feelings of being numb in your arms or legs thatmay feel like
neuropathy. You may also urinate quite a lot with lowpotassium.

because this medical condition is very serious especially when it is
affecting your heart. Also if you are on chemotherapy your potassium
will most definitely be checked frequently. If you do not know if it

doctor and get checked right away. The test for this is just a very

The treatment for low potassium for most people is a doctor prescribed
potassium supplement thatyou will have to take everyday. Your
potassium levels will be checked quiteregularly by blood testing. If

A Muslim believes that yourlife is already destined. Youare not
fighting with nature. Allah has already ordained the exact time you
will spend in Dunya. So, when the year passes by, the way you should
seeit as a Muslim is that I am one year closer to my death. I am
getting closer to my grave.
So it doesn't make any sense for you whatsoever as a Muslim to bring a
cake in front of you and blow the candles and you are smiling and so
happy, when you are one year closer to your death. You should be
making Muhasiba! You should be holding yourself accountable for that
year not celebrating and taking photos in front of a cake. You should
be viewing it with seriousness: I am one year closer to meet Allah,
what have I done? Did I prepare myself for it?
One of the statements of Umar R.A. was: "Hold yourself accountable
before you will be hold accountable for what you did"
Ya ALLAH! Don't let us die, Unless we are true Muslims/

Does Islam want Women to be public and political?

Most certainly. Islam not only promotes, but chargeswomen (and men)
with the responsibility of using their minds for good, preventing evil
as God's trustees on earth.
"The believing men and the believing women are protectors one of
another; they enjoin good and forbid evil; they establish regular
prayers; practice consistent charity; and they obey God and His
Messenger. On them will God Pour His Mercy; for God is the Powerful,
the Wise." (Qur'an 9:71)
Several Qur'anic verses chronicle female thinkers and doers, such as:
Mary, the mother of Jesus; Bilquis, the Queen of Shebawho ruled justly
and believed in the One God; and Aasiya, the Pharaoh's wife who saved
Prophet Moses. History also tells of many great women: Aishah , the
wise teacher and philosopher wife of the Prophet, who taught people
daily for over 50 years; and Zubaydah, the famous builder of an
aqueduct system for pilgrims.
In the first Islamic state in Madinah, Prophet Muhammad asked women to
individually pledge loyalty (one person, one vote) to Islam and to his
leadership. Women were expected then, as they are expected now, to
assume their rightful role in societyas committed partners.
Muslim women today workfor the public good as activists, artists,
entrepreneurs, leaders, scholars, scientists, social workers and
teachers. Muslim women excel in all fields, not in spite of their
religious convictions, but because of them.
