1. WHY MUST WE RECITE SURAH YASEEN EVERY DAY?
RASULLULLAH[SAW] HAS SAID:
1."The person who reads Yaseen every night, (he) will be pardoned."(Baihaqi)
2."The person who reads Surah Yaseen every night, thus, when he dies,
he will die as a sha'heed (martyr)."(Tabaraani)
3."Whosoever reads the heart of the Quraan -"YA-Seen"in Ramadhan will
recieve the sawaab of reading 10 Quraans."(Tirmihi)
4."Whoever reads Surah Yaseen in the beginning of the day, all his
needs for the day will be fulfilled."
5.Whoever reads Surah Ya'seen for the pleasure of Allah only,all his
previous sins are forgiven.Therefore make a practice of reading this
Surah over your dead.
6. If someone reads Surah Ya'seen and Surah Saffat on Friday and begs
Allah of his needs, his needs will be fulfilled
7. Surah Ya'seen is named in the Torah as Mun'mah (giver of good
things) because it contains benefits for its readers in this life as
well as in the Hereafter, it removes from him the afflictions of this
world and the next and takes away the dread of the next life.

How to Become a Muslim -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
HOW TO BECOME A MUSLIM
All praises be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe. May the peace and
blessings of Allah be upon Muhammad His last messenger.
The objective of this handout is to correct a false idea spread among
those willing to adopt Islam as their faith. Some people are facing
difficulties on the basis of their mistaken belief that entering into
the Islamic fold requires an announcement from the concerned person in
the presence of high ranking scholars or sheikhs or reporting this act
to courts of justice or other authorities. It is also thought that the
act of accepting Islam, should, as a condition have a certificate
issued by the authorities as an evidence to that effect.
We wish to clarify that the whole matter is very easy and that none of
the above mentioned conditions or obligations are required. For Allah;
the Almighty, is above all comprehension and knows well the secrets of
all hearts. Nevertheless, those who are going to adopt Islam as their
religion are Muslims with the concerned governmental agency, as this
procedure may facilitate for them many matters including the
possibility of performing Hajj and Umrah.
If anyone has a real desire to be a Muslim and has full conviction and
strong belief that Islam is the true religion ordained by Allah (SWT)
for all human beings, then, one should pronounce that"Shahada"(The
testimony of faith) without further delay. The Holy Qur'an is explicit
in this regard as Allah (SWT) has stated.
"Truly, the Religion on the sight of Allah is Islam."(3:19)
...In another verse of the Holy Qur'an, Allah (SWT) has stated:
"And whosoever desires a religion other that Islam, never will it
accepted of him; and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those
who are lost."(3:85)
In addition, Islam is the only Religion prevailing over all other
religions. Allah (SWT) has stated in the Holy Qur'an;
"And to thee. We have sent the Book in truth, (This Qur'an) confirming
the scripture that came before it, and a witness over it…"(5:48)
Muhammad, the Prophet of Allah (Peace and blessing of Allah be upon him), said:
"Islam is based on five pilla testifying that there is no God worthy
to be worshipped but Allah, and that Muhammad is the messenger of
Allah and His servant; performing the prayer; paying the Zakat
(obligatory charity); fasting the month of Ramadan; and perfuming
Hajj."
The Shahada can be declared as follows:
''ASH-HADU ANLAA ILAHA ILLA ALLAH WA ASH HADU ANNA MUHAMMADAN ABDUHU
WA RASUULUH."
The English translation is:
"I bear witness that there is no deity worthy to be worshipped but
Allah, and I bear witness the Muhammad is His servant and messenger.''
However, it would not be sufficient for anyone to utter only this
testimony orally either in private or in public, but rather, one
should believe in it by heart with a firm conviction with the
teachings of Islam in all his life he will find himself a new born
person, (or new man).
This will move him to strive more and more to improve his character
and draw nearer to perfection. The light of the living faith will fill
his heart until be becomes the embodiment of that faith.
What would be next after declaring the testimony of faith (Shahada)
and then becoming a Muslim? He should know the real concept underlying
this testimony which ...
...means the Oneness of Allah and accept Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), as
the last of the Prophet, and meet its requirements. He must behave
accordingly applying this true faith to every thing he speaks or does.
What do the words of"Shahada"signify.
The significant point which every Muslim must know very well is the
truth that there is no God (ditty) to be worshipped other than Allah,
(Glory be Him). He is the only true God, Who Alone deserves to be
worshipped, since He is the Giver of life and Sustainer and Nourisher
of mankind and all creation with His unlimited bounties. Man must
worship Allah, Who Alone is worthy of worship.
The second part of the"Sahada"i. e."We ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu
wa rasuluh"means that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), is the servant and
chosen messenger of Allah. No one must have two opinions about this
matter. In fact, the Muslim has to obey the commands of the Prophet
(PBUH), to believe him in what he has said, to follow his teachings,
to avoid what he has forbidden, and to worship Allah alone according
to the message revealed to him.
What is the meaning of worship? It simply means rendering sincere
service; showing reverence for Allah. In a deeper shade of meaning, it
implies total submission and complete obedience to Allah's
Commandments both in utterances and actions of man whether explicit or
implicit and whether private or public.
Worship falls into two categories:
Visible (manifest or outward)
Invisible (concealed or inward)
Visible worship includes acts such as uttering the two parts of
the"Shahada"performing prayers, giving Zakat (Obligatory charity),
observing fast in the month of Ramadan, performing Hajj, recitation of
the Holy Qur'an, supplication, adoring Allah by praising Him,
purifying our bodies before prayers, etc.
This type of worship is associated with movement of the parts ...
...of human body, [actions].
Invisible worship is to believe in Allah, in the Day of Judgment, in
the Hereafter, in the Angels, in the Books of Allah, in the Divine
Decree of destiny (that good and bad are determined by Allah alone.
This type of worship does not involve movements of parts of the body
but it surely has a bearing on one's heart which subsequently affects
his way of life. (Beliefs).
It should be borne in mind that worship not dedicated to Allah alone,
will be rejected as one form of polytheism or shirk, which amount to
apostasy from the Islamic point of view.
The next step for a devotee (newly reverted to Islam) is to purify
himself by taking a bath (total ablution). He should then resolve to
comply with all the principles and rules of Islam in their entirety.
He disowns all forms of polytheism and false beliefs. He should reject
evil and be righteous. Such rejection of evil and being righteous is
one of the requisites of the motto of Islam that is, Lailaha Illal
Laah.
Allah has stated in the Holy Qur'an:
"… whoever disbelieves in false deities and believes in Allah, hath
grasped the most trustworthy Handhold, that will never break…"(2:256)
we have to consider that when we declare from our heart that"there is
no god (ditty) worthy to be worshipped but Allah."It implies on our
part of love, devotion, faith and obedience to the rules of Islamic
legislation which are legally binding on all Muslims. It is
requirement of"there is no god worty to be worshipped but Allah,"to
love for the sake of Allah and to reject for the sake of Allah. This
is the firmest anchor of belief which materializes the meaning
of"AL-WALA and"AL-BARA". It means that a Muslim should love and be
loyal to his Muslim brothers. He should, as a practice, dissociate
himself completely from practices of the unbelievers and refuse to be

...influenced by them, both in worldly and religious matters.
We conclude with a humble prayer to Allah that He may cleanse the
hearts and souls of those who are genuine seekers of truth and may He
bless the community of believers. Ameen/

Islam and Struggle: Survival Story, Changes for Survival, Eagle Story
Eagle Story is about a wounded Eaglet who was rescued by a kind
farmer. Farmer found Eaglet in one of his fields,and so took him home,
tended to his wounds, and then placed him outside in the barnyard to
recover.
Strangely enough, Eaglet soon adapted to the habits of all the
barnyardchickens. Eaglet learned to walk and cluck like chickens.
Eaglet learned to drink from a trough and peck the dirt for food, and
for many years Eaglet peacefully resigned himself to this new life on
the farm and grow up to become beautiful Eagle.
But then one day, one of the farmer's friends spotted the Eagle and
asked, "Why in the world is that Eagle acting like a Chicken?" The
farmer toldhim what had happened,yet the friend could hardly accept
the situation.
"It's just not right," said the friend. "The Almighty Creator made
that Eagle to soar in the sky, not scavenge in the barnyard!" So he
picked up the unsuspecting Eagle, climbed onto a nearby fence post,
and tossed him into the air. But the confused Eagle just fell back to
earth andscurried off in search of his feathered friends.
Undaunted, the friend then grabbed the Eagle and climbed to the top
ofthe barn. As he heaved him off the roof, the Eagle made a few
halfhearted squawks andflaps before falling into abale of hay. After
shakinghis head a few times, the Eagle then made himself comfortable
and began mindlessly pecking at pieces of straw.
The friend went home that night dejected, and could barely sleep as he
remembered the sight of those powerful talons caked with barnyard mud.
He couldn't bear the thought, so the very next day, he headed backto
the farm for another try. This time he carried the Eagle to the top of
a nearby mountain where the sky unfolded in a limitless horizon.
He looked into the Eagle'seyes and cried out, "Don'tyou understand?
You weren't made to live like a Chicken! Why would you want to stay
down here when you were born for the sky?" As the man held the
confused Eagle aloft, he made sure the Eagle was facing into the
brilliant light of the setting sun. Then he powerfully heaved the bird
into the sky, and thistime the Eagle opened his wings, looked at the
sun, caught the updraft rising from the valley, and disappeared into
theclouds of sky.
Moral: Do you know that we, too, were born for some high purpose in
this life? The Almighty Creator has called us to live in the heights,
yet too many of us have huddled together in the barnyard, not
struggling to search for our own Islamic identity and the purpose of
Islamic life?

stuck toits' chest and make it difficult to fly.
Then Eagle is left with only 2 options: die or go through a painful
processof change which lasts 150days for survival.
The process requires that Eagle fly to a mountain top and sit on its'
nest. There the Eagle knocks its' beak against a rock until it plucks
it out. Afterplucking it out, Eagle will wait for a new beak to grow
back. When its' new talons grow back, the eagle starts plucking its'
old-aged feathers andafter 5 months, eagle cantake its' flight of
rebirth and lives for 30 more years.
Moral: Many times, in order to survive, we haveto start a change
process.We sometimes need to get rid of old memories, habits and other
past traditions. Only freed from past burdens, we can take advantage
of the present and future.
Even though you may want to move forward in your life, you may have
one foot on the brakes. In order to be free, we must learn to let go.
Release the hurt and fear,refuse to entertain your old pain. The
energy it takes to hang on to that part is holding you back from a new
life. If we stay imprisoned by fear and judgement of our human nature,
we will miss out on the whole reason for being here!
Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react
to what happens, not by what lifebrings to us, but by the attitude we
bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive
thoughts, events,and outcomes. It is a catalyst, a spark that creates
extraordinary results. Let's change to make a change!!!

An Analysis of Hardship inLife: Obstacle in our Path,Struggle and Emerge
A fact of human life is that from time to time we face difficulties.
Thesecan be small day to day annoyances or calamities that push our
patience and will power to their limits. Sometimes it is hard for a
person to understand the reasons behind these horrible events,
especially when he/she knows that there is a God maintaining order in
the universe andWho is merciful. In such asituation a person may even
resent God and ask why He is making life so difficult, especially when
He is supposed to love Hisdevoted servants.
It is important to remember that when making a judgment about a
situation we should think about whether or not we have enough
knowledge to doso. Something that is badin our minds may actuallybe
good, and we may only think it is bad because of our limited
perception and knowledge. For example, imagine a person who has lived
all his life in a rain forest. He has no knowledge of technologyor
civilizations and only knows what he has learned from experience and
from those around him. If we were to take him and bring him to the
city and showed him skyscrapers, cars, and computers, he would be
overwhelmed and overawed by the extravagance. Now, if he were to be
taken past a construction site where cranes and bulldozers were
demolishing a building, he would think that something bad was being
done. In his mind the construction workers would be destroying a
perfectly good building for no reason at all, and this act would be
considered senseless by him. But he is not aware that the old building
is being torn down so that a better one can be erected in its place,
and ifhe knew this, he would not think badly of the construction
workers for tearing down the old building. He would be happy that they
are bringing something better and would now consider the destruction
of the old building as something good and necessary. The hardship that
the people living around the site must bear by having to look at the
ugly torn down building for months, having their streets closed down
and traffic tied up, is only something temporary. Some people may
actually curse the construction workers for bringing this hardship
onthem but they are not keeping in mind that these hardships will be
followed by ease and improvement. Instead of viewing these things as
hardship and becoming annoyed and angry, one could see them as a sign
that soon there will be ease and progress.
An artist can relate to having people look at hiswork in its beginning
or middle stages, and without knowing what the end product will be,
they give unwarranted criticism. That is when heasks them to wait for
when it is finished. In thebeginning or in the middle the work may
notbe pleasing or have muchmeaning, but once it is completed then
everyonecan see what he was working towards. We humans can only attain
such a limited amount of knowledge in our lives. So how can we look at
a hurricane, tornado, flood, Tsunami or volcano and blame God that He
is doing something cruel and unjust? How can we know what His ultimate
purpose is for all of thesehappenings? In the same way that the man
from the rain forest would be unjustified in viewing the demolition of
old buildings as wrong, we would be unjustified to view the calamities
of nature as cruel acts of God.
There was once a king who put his subjects through a test. He went out
onto the main road of his kingdom and he had a large stone placed in
the middle, thereby making the road difficult to cross. After having
placed the large stone hehid himself nearby to watch the reaction of
thepeople. He saw the dignitaries of his court and the wealthy cross
by,and as they did so they managed it only with great difficulty.
While they did so, they cursed the rock and said to each other, why
doesn't the King move this rock? All of the wealthy aristocratswent
along in the same manner, cursing the rock and wondering in amazement

Thesecan be small day to day annoyances or calamities that push our
patience and will power to their limits. Sometimes it is hard for a
person to understand the reasons behind these horrible events,
especially when he/she knows that there is a God maintaining order in
the universe andWho is merciful. In such asituation a person may even
resent God and ask why He is making life so difficult, especially when
He is supposed to love Hisdevoted servants.
It is important to remember that when making a judgment about a
situation we should think about whether or not we have enough
knowledge to doso. Something that is badin our minds may actuallybe
good, and we may only think it is bad because of our limited
perception and knowledge. For example, imagine a person who has lived
all his life in a rain forest. He has no knowledge of technologyor
civilizations and only knows what he has learned from experience and
from those around him. If we were to take him and bring him to the
city and showed him skyscrapers, cars, and computers, he would be
overwhelmed and overawed by the extravagance. Now, if he were to be
taken past a construction site where cranes and bulldozers were
demolishing a building, he would think that something bad was being
done. In his mind the construction workers would be destroying a
perfectly good building for no reason at all, and this act would be
considered senseless by him. But he is not aware that the old building
is being torn down so that a better one can be erected in its place,
and ifhe knew this, he would not think badly of the construction
workers for tearing down the old building. He would be happy that they
are bringing something better and would now consider the destruction
of the old building as something good and necessary. The hardship that
the people living around the site must bear by having to look at the
ugly torn down building for months, having their streets closed down
and traffic tied up, is only something temporary. Some people may
actually curse the construction workers for bringing this hardship
onthem but they are not keeping in mind that these hardships will be
followed by ease and improvement. Instead of viewing these things as
hardship and becoming annoyed and angry, one could see them as a sign
that soon there will be ease and progress.
An artist can relate to having people look at hiswork in its beginning
or middle stages, and without knowing what the end product will be,
they give unwarranted criticism. That is when heasks them to wait for
when it is finished. In thebeginning or in the middle the work may
notbe pleasing or have muchmeaning, but once it is completed then
everyonecan see what he was working towards. We humans can only attain
such a limited amount of knowledge in our lives. So how can we look at
a hurricane, tornado, flood, Tsunami or volcano and blame God that He
is doing something cruel and unjust? How can we know what His ultimate
purpose is for all of thesehappenings? In the same way that the man
from the rain forest would be unjustified in viewing the demolition of
old buildings as wrong, we would be unjustified to view the calamities
of nature as cruel acts of God.
There was once a king who put his subjects through a test. He went out
onto the main road of his kingdom and he had a large stone placed in
the middle, thereby making the road difficult to cross. After having
placed the large stone hehid himself nearby to watch the reaction of
thepeople. He saw the dignitaries of his court and the wealthy cross
by,and as they did so they managed it only with great difficulty.
While they did so, they cursed the rock and said to each other, why
doesn't the King move this rock? All of the wealthy aristocratswent
along in the same manner, cursing the rock and wondering in amazement

Story - Novel The Fever
*****I wrote this piece inhigh school for a final portfolio project.
It is not completely finished and at the end, you can tell I was short
for time. I will come back and finish thisstory at some point. The
story was developed from the prompt we were given: "When the fever
broke, they had all hoped that they'd seen the last of Uncle Jack."

PROLOGUE
When the fever broke, they had all hoped that they'd seen the last
of"Uncle Jack." But everyone knew he wouldbe back; he never stopped
until he got what he wanted. The excitement, agitation, and panic
would continue. He would find us again, as he had done consistently
for the last three years. Even so, we were safe for now, but-
The fever would find us again.
CHAPTER 1
Chicago, 1982 - A step back in Time
The frigid air of early March chilled the body tothe bone and darkened
the spirit. Snow was falling, but wasn't collecting on the ground.Its
color was grey, the same grey as the exhaust from the awesome
smokestacks that filled the horizon, tainting the snow from the
pureness the flakes were supposedto produce.
The darkened flakes landed in my hair as I stuck my now discolored
hands in the pockets of my long, khaki trench coat. I lowered my head
as I walked down the sidewalk, keeping to my own business. I ignored
the masked bandits holding a revolver to the forehead of the owner ofa
small jewelry store on my instant right. I ignored the man in the
black, hooded jacket across the street on my left, his eyes following
me while he sucked on a cigarette. I quickened mypace as I crossed the
street. A taxi ran the red light and dark slush was sprayed all over
my trench coat. I sighed thenignored it. Conflict wouldonly cause
problems, something South Chicagodidn't need any more of. I only had
another three blocks to walk, but even so I clamped my hand around the
switchblade in my left pocket. It mademe feel better; it made me feel
safe - well, safer. It was hard to feel completely safe around here.
My grip loosened a bit as my house came into view. It was hard to find
if you weren't looking for it. The shack was worn down, one story,
with a front porch that could be nice but didn't look the part as it
had lost most of its paint. As I got closer to the house, all I could
hear was the screaming of my two year old twins in the living room.
The crying continued as I proceededthrough the door. I hung my coat
and slowly walked into the living room.
"I'm home!" I yelled into the kitchen where the smell of chicken broth
originated. "Soup again,"I muttered under my breath. I couldn't afford
to bring home much for supper because my income didn't spread nearly
far enough. The twins continued their moaning.
"We got robbed again today," Jennifer muttered as she popped her head
out from around the corner. She came back into the dirty and messy
living room to try to entertain the twins before going back into the
kitchen to attend to her soup.
"They are just hungry," she told me as I frowned once they didn't stop
their constant exclamations. I came back into the moldy kitchen to set
the table."We lost the radio and the rest of the jewelry..." my wife
decrescendoed into a sigh.
I didn't reply as I went to grab the two little girls and set them in
their respective seats around the table. The small kitchen was
incredibly humid from the steam coming from the slow-boiling container
on the old stove. Jennifergrabbed four bowls and loaded them up with
soup and added a spoon to each. We all took our place around the small
table to nibble at the never changing meal.
"Paul, will you say grace?" Jen inquired. I sat the spoon down that
was halfway to my mouth and folded my hands together as everyone else
followed my actions.
"Bless us oh Lord, in these thy gifts, which we are..." I continued.
But even as I said the prayer, it was more of a routine than a ritual.
God didn't care, or he would have helped us by now. I quickly finished
the prayer.
"Amen," Jennifer whispered.
"A-MEN!" the girls exclaimed in unison.
Everyone instantaneouslypicked up a spoon and started slurping the
onion and rutabaga soupfrom each of their own bowls. "Jen, where is
the salt?" I asked as my eyes searched the table, hoping, but already
knowing the answer.
"We don't have any, Paul.We haven't had any in over a month."
Disappointed, I went back to my slurping. The rutabaga in the soup
hadbeen overcooked, leaving flavorless orange cubes of mush in every
bite.
After dinner, I took the girls into their room and read those Mother
Goose Rhymes until they were fast asleep. I slowly closed their door
and wandered to the kitchen.Jen was just drying the last of the dishes
and almost ignored me as I walked behind her and grabbed her around
her narrow waist. "Is there anything I can help with?" I politely
asked after a brief silent moment. She shrugged herself out of my arms
and replied with: "It's been a long day; I'm going to bed." She
avoided my eyes the whole time.
I watched her walk downthe hallway and disappear into the darkness at
the end. I turned around and examined the constant plip-plop I was
hearing. First, I turned to the sink faucet, but it wasn't leaking
water. I noticed some discoloration aboveme as I looked up and saw
some rust coloring on the ceiling. Water dripped at a steady and
constant rate from the center and created a small puddle on the
kitchen floor. I shook my head and let the splashing continue as I
turned the light off and exited down the hallway.
I opened the bedroom door at the end of the hallway to my wife lying
in bed, awake in her cotton pajamas. I stripped down to my plaid
boxers and crawledinto bed next to her. At first, all I could hear was
the rain from the storm constantly beating the window. After a few
moments of lying in bed, I noticed Jennifer was crying.
"Are you okay?" The crying continued.
"Paul, we don't have anything left. All we haveare a few dishes and a
few pieces of furniture."
"And now a leaking roof," I chimed in. The crying continued until she
had cried herself to sleep. There was nothing I could do. It was the
same night after night. I couldn't do anything anymore. But then I
changed my mind. I couldand would do something.We couldn't live like
this anymore. Something needed to change.
I fell asleep deciding on aplan. -[ * - TO BE CONTINUED..........]-

But my mother is not Muslim and she buys meat from stores that do not sell halaal meat and cooks it.Is it haraam to eat the meat that she cooks for us?? Please note that shedoes that with a good intention. Is there any harm in refusing to eat the food she offers to us? What is the ruling onthat? May Allah reward you with good. Praise be to Allaah. Firstly: If the meat has been slaughtered by one of the People of the Book (a Jew or a Christian) and we do not know themethod of slaughter, butmost people in the country kill meat by means of electric shock or by slaughtering it for someone or something other than Allah, it is notpermissible to eat that meat, on the basis of what is usually the case. in Muslim countries and elsewhere, two conditions must be met:
1. The meat should have been slaughtered in the manner prescribed
in sharee'ah; it should not have been stunned with electricity, or
drowned in water, or any other means of killing that is done in some
countries.
2. The one who slaughtered the meat should have been a Muslim or a
kitaabi (one of the people of the Book, i.e., a Jew or Christian); it
is not permissible to eat meat slaughtered by a communist, atheist or
idol-worshipper.

If it becomes clear to youthat the chicken sold in these restaurants
has not been slaughtered in the manner prescribed in sharee'ah, it is
not permissible for you to eat it and it is not permissible for you to
work with those who sell it, because that comes under the heading of

subject to two conditions:

after one or two days with nothing but the mark of your arrow on it,
then eat, but if it fell into water, do not eat it."
According to a report narrated by Muslim: "When you shoot your arrow,
mention the name of Allah. Then if you find it (the game) dead then
eat, unless you find that it has falleninto water, in which case you
cannot know whether it was the water that killed it, or your arrow."
The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade eating
if there is any uncertainty as to whether the meat was slaughtered
properly in accordance with sharee'ah because of thehunting dog being
joined by another dog, or because of the target animal falling into
waterand the possibility that itdied by drowning.
Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in Sharh Muslim: The
words of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him): "If

case. The same applies if one is not sure whether the meat was
slaughtered properly or killed by means of electric shock. That is
because of the report narrated by al-Bukhaari (5485) and Muslim (1929)
from 'Adiyy ibn Haatim (may Allah be pleased with him) from the
Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) who said: "If you
release your(hunting) dog and say the name of Allah, and (the dog)
catches (the game) and kills it, then eat, but if (the dog) ate (some
of it), then do not eat, because he only caught it for himself. If
another dog joins him over whom the name of Allah was not mentioned,
and they caught it and ate from it,do not eat, for you do not know
which of themkilled it. If you shoot an arrow and you find (the game)
after one or two days with nothing but the mark of your arrow on it,
then eat, but if it fell into water, do not eat it."
According to a report narrated by Muslim: "When you shoot your arrow,
mention the name of Allah. Then if you find it (the game) dead then
eat, unless you find that it has falleninto water, in which case you
cannot know whether it was the water that killed it, or your arrow."

country's context, its a little bit different which forced me to ask
further explanation. You mentioned that a meat slaughtered by ahlel
kitab can be eaten provided that it is slaughtered in the name of
Allah. In another fetwa in your site, it is also mentioned that we
don't need to ask whether that specific meat is slaughtered in the
name of Allah, as long as it is slaughtered by a Muslim or a kitabiy.
In our country (Ethiopia), we already know that Christians most of the
time slaughter after saying: " In the name of the father (referring to
God),the Son, and the holy spirit". So, can we consider their being
ahlel kitab and eat their meat with out asking about what has been
mentioned during slaughtering, or do we have to take all their meat as
unlawful?.

Al-Imaam Maalik Ibn Anas
Muslims follow four major schools of jurisprudence in matters of legal
and devotional details. Imaam Maalik Ibn Anas, may Allaah have mercy
upom him, comes second in order from a chronological point of view.
ForMaalik ibn Anas, who is known asthe scholar of Madeenah, was born
in Madeenah in the year 93 A.H.
Imaam Maalik's mother advised him to join the first school and
universityin Islam, the Mosque of the Prophet in Madeenah, where he
started by memorizing the Glorious Quran and then the Hadeeth
[traditions of Prophet Muhammad ]. In the age when writing and written
educational material were a rarity, students and scholars had to have
a strong memory to consult and store the knowledge theygained. Imaam
Maalik was not lacking in this special ability. We are told that when
he listened to a teacher narrating Prophetic traditions, Maalik ibn
Anas used to tie a knot for each tradition (Hadeeth). Later, he tried
to recite the traditions to himself in order to make sure that he
retained every single one. Once heattended a session where30 Hadeeths
were narrated and discussed. When the session was over he checked his
retention of those Hadeeths and found that he forgot one of them. Sohe
rushed after his teacher to learn the missing Hadeeth from him, the
teacher listened to him, and taught him the one he had missed.
As an eminent scholar, henot only attended study circles held by no
less than 90 scholars, but throughout his life he discussed different
matters of the faith with his colleagues and the scholars who came to
Madeenah during the Hajj (pilgrimage) season, in addition to
corresponding with well-known authorities in various parts of the
Muslim world. We are told that Maalik ibn Anas started teaching in the
Prophet's Mosque very early in his life (late teensor early twenties),
but hedid not start teaching until his command of religious learning
was witnessed to by no less than seventy of his teachers, some of whom
came to attend the teaching sessions of theirformer student to learn
from him.
As a conservative traditionalist, Imaam Maalik as a teacher in his
mosque had great reverence for the Hadeeths of the Prophet . History
tells us that before Imaam Maalik embarked upon teachingthe Hadeeth,
he would have a bath and wear hisbest clothes, and he would not allow
anyone to raise his voice too high. It is also reported that he would
not ride in Madeenah, saying that hecould not see himself riding in a
town where the Prophet was buried.
Since Imaam Maalik lived ninety years he witnessed the change of the
Umayyad Dynasty to the Abbasid, and he met many a Caliph whose respect
he commanded with his knowledge and sincere advice, in addition to his
dignity as a scholar. We are told that when the famous Caliph Haroon
Ar-Rasheedlearnt about Al-Muwatta' (a book compiled by Imaam Maalik),
he sent his minister to fetch him in order to read the bookto the
Caliph. Imaam Maalik politely answered,"Give my regards to the Caliph,
and tell him that knowledge should be visited, and it should not visit
people. People should come to it, and it should not go to
people."Later, when the Caliph blamed Imaam Maalik fordisobeying him,
he said to the Caliph: "O Leader of the Faithful, Allaah the Almighty
has raised you to this honourable position. Do not be the first one to
lower the place and insult the dignity of knowledge and learning so
that Allaah may not lower your place. I did not really want to disobey
you, but I rather wanted the Leader of the Faithfulto show due respect
to learning in order that Allaah may raise his position." Caliph
Haroun Ar-Rasheed was convinced, and he walked along with Imaam Maalik
to his own house to listen to him and to his readings from his book.
Another quality typical ofthe knowledgeable heroes of Islam, which
Imaam Maalik taught to people through word and action, was humility
and confession to ignorance of matters of which he was not certain. He
emphasized to his students that the most important expression a true
scholar should have the courage to say was, "I do not know." In fact,
we are told that a man came to Imaam Maalik and informed him that he
had travelled for six months to ask him about a certain problem. Upon
hearing the problem Maalik could not find a satisfactory answer. So he
humbly told the man,"I do not know." The manwas surprised, and he
said, "What shall I tell my folk when I go home." Imaam Maalik said:
"Tell them Maalik ibn Anas says he does not know."
It was with this sense of responsibility that ImaamMaalik taught
people andgave his religious verdict (fatwa), despite the fact that he
collected more than 100,000 Prophetic traditions (Hadith) and studied

Father: Yes, my dear boy. However, if you don't do so, the
consequences will be bad.
After cleaning the room…
Child: Dad! I cleaned my room.
Father: Do you call this cleaning?
Child: I did my best, Dad.
Father: Why didn't you clean under the bed? Remove the dustfrom the
glass? Arrange the clothes?
Child: I forgot to do that, but I will do it now.
After cleaning the room again...
Child: I have cleaned everything!
Father: Good! Well done!
Child: I deserve the prize now, right?
Father: Yes, you deserve it!
Child: You told me that you will buy me whatever I want.
Father: Yes, I did say that. What would you like me to buy you?"
Child: I want you to buy me a motorcycle!
Father: What, a motorcycle?! That is too expensive, and I can't buy it now.
Child: But you said that you would buy me whatever I wanted.
Father: But you should ask for something reasonable.
Child: But I want a motorcycle and nothing else.
Father: I don't like those who talk and argue too much, you have to
ask for something reasonable or Iwill buy you nothing.
Child (weeping): But I love motorcycles!
The child then returns to his room that he has just cleaned feeling
remorse for every second he had spent in cleaning it. At thesame time,
he has lost confidence in his father's repeated illusionary promises
that he never fulfills. He closes the door and falls asleep.
Dear educator, be precise, logical and motivating. In the light of the
previous story, let us ask the following questions:
Was the father precise and logicalin his request? Did he succeed in
motivating his child?
Dear parent, let us answer the following three questions:
First: Was the father precise (in his orders and requests)?
Why do parents always think badly of their children if they refuse to
respond to their orders or if they respond wrongly? Why do we
immediately accuse the child of negligence?
In fact, we should accuse ourselves in many cases and inquire, "Were
we precise in our demands from the child?"
Was it sufficient for the father to ask his child to clean his room?
Isthis request sufficient or does it need some clarification?
The reward that the child will receive when he obeys his parents
represents the real incentive that makes him feel confident and
strong. Therefore, the parents who are not specific with their
children when they give them orders unintentionally lead their
children to failure.
For example, the father could have explained his request to his child
from the beginning in the following way:
· Use the broom when cleaning the floor
· Arrange the clothes and put them in their place
· Remove the dust from the glass and furniture
Putting it this way helps the childto know what is exactly required of
him easily. In such a case, if the child does something wrong, then
he, rather than you, would be the negligent party.
Specification and clarity is required in motivation: You should not
tell your child that you would buy him whatever he wants if he does
such-and-such. That is because the child has an intrinsic powerful
imagination and there is no limit to his demands. Therefore, if you
are not specific and do not respond to your child's requests, he will
be disappointed and will lose confidence in his father's promises and
incentives. On the contrary, such motivation will turn in the future
into frustration.
This explains what happened in our story. The child asked for a
motorcycle, and the father could not fulfill this difficult request
and the result was disappointment and frustration.
The father has to be specific even in motivating his child. For
example, he could motivate him by saying, "If you clean your room, I
will allow you to watch a cartoon."
Likewise, the parents should be specific in punishment. Therefore, it
is unfavorable to tellthe child, "If you do not do such-and-such, the
consequenceswill be bad."
The punishment should be specific. For example, one should say to his
child, "If you do not do such-and-such, you will not have any pocket
money, or you will not play video games, watch a cartoon movie, and so
on."
The father should choose the most effective (not severe) punishment,
because unspecified punishments encourage the child to be careless as
long as he does not feel its effect on him.
However, the best thing that you can do to be specific in your demands
from your child is to arrange your room in his presence. In other
words, you should be an example to your child just as the Prophet, ,
was the best example to his Companions. The Prophet, , was the perfect
example of the educator that people follow. He used to be ahead of his
Companions guiding them in wars, and encouraging them to spend in the
cause of Allaah The Almighty. He was also ahead of them when they were
digging the trench and he endured hardships and treated his wives
well.
My dear educator, you should know that giving a clear messageis
considered one of the key introductions to good education. Parents
should tell their children exactly what they want them to do, and how
they want them to do it. They should also determinewhen their children
act properly or improperly.
Second: Was the father logical in his demands and the expected results?
Many parents ask their children to do things that exceed their ability
or age. Therefore, they are in fact leading them to failure,
especially when they expect excellent results. An example of this is
when a parent asks his three-year-old child to wash the dishes or
clean the room. On the other hand, many parents degrade their
children's abilities and ask them to do what they cannot accept,
because they can actually do more due to their age and mature
mind. For example, when the mother asks her ten-year-old child to
sit so that she can study every single word with him, she is in fact
asking herchild to do something that he cannot bear. That is because
this implies an offence and accusationof ignorance. However, the
mother expects excellent scores at the end of the year, while she has
made her child completely dependent upon her.
The parent should be logical in what he asks his child to do and the
results he expects. This requires taking two things into
consideration:
1- The child's capabilities including his age, strength, intelligence,
vitality and self-confidence
2- The nature of the request itself
Then, the parent should comparethe child's capabilities and the
capabilities that are required for responding to his request after
avoiding and treating the physical and the psychological problems.
The parent should understand the Quranic verses in which Allaah The
Almighty Says (what means):
· } Allaah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its
capacity. { [Quran 2:286]
· } Allaah does not charge a soul except [according to] what He has
given it. { [Quran 65:7]
By understanding these verses, parents can successfully compareresults
and judge whether or not they comply with their expectations of the
child.
Third: Was the father motivating?
This point is very important because the human soul likes praise, and
treating disobediencethrough encouragement is one ofthe most important
educational methods. The effects of this encouragement upon the child
include generating consciousnessof success in the work for which he
has been rewarded. Of course, this satisfies the child's motivations
and activates his learning habits in the future. The result would be
strengthening the child's confidence and encouraging him to be more
adventurous, creative and determined.
This method is very important in encouraging children, however, the
following issues should be observed:
· This should not be the only method, namely, the parents should not
use this method in cases when they see that there is a necessity for
punishment. Thereshould be a balance between reward and punishment.
· Motivation should be specific and precise, as we have mentioned.
· Parents should fulfill their motivational promises under all circumstances.
· Parents must implement their warnings if the child did not keephis promise.
· The motivation should not be exaggerated.
· Motivation should be using something loved and desired by the child.
Dear parent, you can also use some words to praise your child when he
obeys you such as "I like the way you handled this" , "Iknow you well
and I am sure that you will behave properly," or "I think you can do
it".
Finally, dear father and mother do not forget when you ask your child
to arrange his room, for example, you should be specific and explain
things to him. Do notask your child to do anything thatexceeds his
abilities. Likewise, be specific in motivating your child.
Child: But I don't know how to dothat!
Father: I said clean the room! Don't you understand? Does thisneed
any explanation? You are old enough and you can do this by yourself.
If you clean your room, I will buy you whatever you like.
Child: Really, Dad?
Father: Yes, my dear boy. However, if you don't do so, the
consequences will be bad.
After cleaning the room…
Child: Dad! I cleaned my room.
Father: Do you call this cleaning?
Child: I did my best, Dad.

Many benefits of seeking forgiveness
Do you want to have peace of mind, reassurance, and joy?
You should ask for the forgiveness of Allaah The Almighty. Allaah The
Almighty Says (what means): } And [saying],"Seek Forgiveness of your
Lord and repent to Him, [and] He Will Let you enjoy a good provision {
[Quran 11: 3]
Do you want to have a strong body and be healthy; free of diseases and
disabilities? You should ask for the forgiveness of Allaah The
Almighty. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): } AskForgiveness of
your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky
upon you in showers and Increase you in strength [added] to your
strength. { [Quran 11: 52]
Do you want to drive disasters and accidents away and be safe from
Fitnah (trials) and dilemma? You should ask for the forgiveness of
Allaah The Almighty. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): } But
Allaah would not punish them while you, [O Muhammad], are among them,
and Allaah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness. { [Quran
8: 33]
Do you want rain in continuing showers, righteous children, lawful
money, and expanded sustenance? Then you should ask for the
forgiveness of Allaah The Almighty. Allaah The Almighty Says (what
means): } And said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He Is ever
a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in
[continuing] showers. And give you increase inwealth and children and
provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers. { [Quran 71: 10-
12]
Do you want your sins to be forgiven, your rewards to be increased,
and your rank to be elevated? You should ask for the forgiveness of
Allaah The Almighty. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): } And say,
'Relieve us of our burdens.' We will [then] forgive your sins for you,
and We will Increase the doers of good [in goodness and reward]." {
[Quran 2: 58]
Asking for forgiveness is the successful remedy for getting rid of
sins. This is why the Prophet, , ordered us to ask for the forgiveness
of Allaah The Almighty frequently. The Prophet, , said: "O people! Ask
for the forgiveness of Allaah and repent to Him as I ask for the
forgiveness of Allaah and repent to Him one hundred times a day."
Allaah The Almighty is satisfied with the one who asks for His
forgiveness as this person acknowledges his sin as if he says, "O
Allaah! I have made a mistake and I was negligent withYour rights as I
wronged myself and the devil tempted me and mysoul which is a
persistent enjoiner of evil betrayed me. I relied on Your mercy,
forgiveness,and forbearance. Now, I come to You while repenting and
regretting, so forgive me, removemy sins and mistakes as I do not have
any other Lord but You. O Allaah! Even if my sins are grave Your
Forgiveness is greater and more comprehensive ."

Dought & clear - , Should he marry a girl who insists on going outwearing adornment (tabarruj) even though her character is good?.
I am a Muslim who is able to get married, and I have met a girl who
has a good character butshe goes out wearing adornment. What is the
Islamic ruling if I marry her and she insists on going out wearing
adornment?.
Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly:
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) encouraged us
to marry women who are religiously committed. He said: "Women may be
marriedfor four things: their wealth, their lineage, their beauty and
their religious commitment. Choose the one who is
religiously-committed, may your hands be rubbed with dust (i.e., may
your prosper)." Narrated by al-Bukhaari,5090; Muslim, 1466.
And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "This world
is transient comforts, and the best ofthe comforts of this world is a
righteous woman." Narrated by Muslim, 1467. Whoever fails to find a
righteous wife misses out on the best of the comforts of this world,
one that is better than wealth, children and status, etc.
This should motivate the Muslim to seek a wife who is religiously
committed and of good character, and to give such a woman precedence
over all others, and not to be heedless about the best of the comforts
of this world.
A righteous woman is the one who pays attention to the rights ofAllaah
and the rights of other people, and the person who has the greatest
rights over her is her husband.
Persisting in sin is worse than the sin itself, because it is
indicative of weakness of faith andfailure to respect Allaah, and it
means that the person is careless about things that may be detrimental
to his religious commitment.
Secondly:
As well as being an act ofdisobedience and sin, going out wearing
one'sadornment is also indicative of a woman's bad attitude and lack
of modesty. How can a chaste and modest woman be content to have
people look at her and enjoy her beauty?
But because of her weakness of faith and the strength of her whims and
desires, the woman who goes out wearing her adornment does not realize
how bad her action is, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"and Shaytaan (Satan) made fair-seeming to them that which they used to do"
[al-An'aam 6:43]
Many of those who used to go out wearing their adornment, when
Allaahblesses them with guidance, become appalled at their former
immodest ways.
There are well known reports which warn against tabarruj (wanton
display of one'sbeauty and adornments), such as thewords of the
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): "There are two
types of the people of Hell whom I have not seen: people with whips
like the tails of cattle, with which they strike the people, and women
who are clothed yet naked, walking with an enticing gait, with
something on their heads that looks like the humps of camels, leaning
to one side. Theywill never enter Paradiseor even smell its fragrance,
although its fragrance can be detected from such and such a distance."
Narrated by Muslim, 2128.
And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Any woman
who perfumes herself then passes by the people so that they can smell
her fragrance is an adulteress." Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4173;
al-Tirmidhi, 2786; al-Nasaa'i, 5126; classed as hasan by al-Albaani
inSaheeh al-Nasaa'i.
If this sin is repeated, it creates a black spot on the heart, until
the whole heart is blackened, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of
Allaah be upon him) said: "If the believer commits a sin, a black spot
appears on his heart. If he repents, gives it up and seeks
forgiveness, his heart is cleansed, but if he does more then (that
spot) increases until it covers his heart. That is the raan (covering
of sin) which Allaah mentioned in the Qur'aan:
"Nay! But on their heartsis the Raan (covering of sins and evil deeds)
which they used to earn"
[al-Mutaffifeen 83:14]
Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3334; Ibn Maajah, 4244; classed as hasan by
al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.
You should note that marriage to a woman who persists in going out
wearing her adornment can only mean one of two things:
1 - That the husband hasgiven in to her, and is keeping quiet about
her evil action, so he will carry a burden of major sin in the
Hereafter and shame in this world, for he is a shepherd who is
responsible for his flock.
How can a wise man accept to walk with his wife in the street when she
is showing her adornment, and the menaround him are looking at her and
enjoying the view?!
2 - That he will stay withher in a state of conflict and fighting and
disagreement. This may be a cause of distress and anguish which no
wise man would accept. So err on the side of caution, for there is
nothing like being on the safe side. Look for a wife who is
religiously committed, for a righteous woman will begood for you,
praise be to Allaah. A righteous woman is the best of thecomforts of
this world; she will help you to obeyAllaah, remind you of what is
right and proper, guard herself and her husband's wealth, and raise
righteous children for him who will worship Allaah.

desires, the woman who goes out wearing her adornment does not realize
how bad her action is, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"and Shaytaan (Satan) made fair-seeming to them that which they used to do"
[al-An'aam 6:43]
Many of those who used to go out wearing their adornment, when
Allaahblesses them with guidance, become appalled at their former
immodest ways.
There are well known reports which warn against tabarruj (wanton
display of one'sbeauty and adornments), such as thewords of the
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): "There are two
types of the people of Hell whom I have not seen: people with whips
like the tails of cattle, with which they strike the people, and women
who are clothed yet naked, walking with an enticing gait, with
something on their heads that looks like the humps of camels, leaning
to one side. Theywill never enter Paradiseor even smell its fragrance,
although its fragrance can be detected from such and such a distance."
Narrated by Muslim, 2128.
And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Any woman
who perfumes herself then passes by the people so that they can smell
her fragrance is an adulteress." Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4173;
al-Tirmidhi, 2786; al-Nasaa'i, 5126; classed as hasan by al-Albaani
inSaheeh al-Nasaa'i.
If this sin is repeated, it creates a black spot on the heart, until
the whole heart is blackened, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of
Allaah be upon him) said: "If the believer commits a sin, a black spot
appears on his heart. If he repents, gives it up and seeks
forgiveness, his heart is cleansed, but if he does more then (that
spot) increases until it covers his heart. That is the raan (covering
of sin) which Allaah mentioned in the Qur'aan:
"Nay! But on their heartsis the Raan (covering of sins and evil deeds)
which they used to earn"
[al-Mutaffifeen 83:14]
Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3334; Ibn Maajah, 4244; classed as hasan by
al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.
You should note that marriage to a woman who persists in going out
wearing her adornment can only mean one of two things:
1 - That the husband hasgiven in to her, and is keeping quiet about
her evil action, so he will carry a burden of major sin in the
Hereafter and shame in this world, for he is a shepherd who is
responsible for his flock.
How can a wise man accept to walk with his wife in the street when she
is showing her adornment, and the menaround him are looking at her and
enjoying the view?!
2 - That he will stay withher in a state of conflict and fighting and
disagreement. This may be a cause of distress and anguish which no
wise man would accept. So err on the side of caution, for there is
nothing like being on the safe side. Look for a wife who is
religiously committed, for a righteous woman will begood for you,
praise be to Allaah. A righteous woman is the best of thecomforts of
this world; she will help you to obeyAllaah, remind you of what is
right and proper, guard herself and her husband's wealth, and raise
righteous children for him who will worship Allaah.

Dought & clear - , Asking the imam to make du‘aa’ (supplication) for a sick person after the prayer so that the worshippers can say Ameen to his du‘aa’.
I am the imam of a mosque in New York. Some people come to me to ask
me to make du'aa' for a sick person after the prayer, so that the
worshippers can say Ameen to the du'aa', because the mosque is the
only place where theMuslims gather. Is this bid'ah (an innovation)?.
Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly:
Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, has commanded His slaves to
call upon Him and He encourages themto do so, as He says
(interpretation of the meaning):
"And when My slaves askyou (O Muhammad SAW) concerning Me, then
(answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond
to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any
mediator or intercessor).So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so
that they may be led aright"
[al-Baqarah 2:186]
"And your Lord said:"Invoke Me, (i.e. believe in My Oneness (Islamic
Monotheism)) (and ask Me for anything) I will respond to your
(invocation)"
[Ghaafir 40:60].
That includes praying forone who is sick in the hope that Allah, may
He be glorified and exalted,may heal him or alleviate what has
befallen him, and in the hope that the prayer of his righteous Muslim
brothers will benefit him. It was the practice of the Prophet
(blessingsand peace of Allah be upon him) to offer supplication for
the sick. That is proven from him, as in the hadeeth of Sa'dibn Abi
Waqqaas (may Allah be pleased with him) who narrated that when the
Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) visited him when he
wassick: he placed his hand on his forehead, then hewiped his hand
over my face and stomach, then he said: "O Allah, heal Sa'd and
complete his migration." And I can still feel its coolness on my heart
until this moment.
Narrated by al-Bukhaari,5659; Muslim, 1628
He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) taught his noble
Companions a number ofsupplication that they could recite for the
sick. An example of that is what is proven from Ibn 'Abbaas (may Allah
be pleased with him), that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah
be upon him) said: "Whoever visits a sick person who is not yet dying,
and says seven times in his presence: 'As'alu Allaaha rabb al-'arsh
il-'azeem an yashfiyaka (I ask Allaah, Lord of the mighty Throne, to
heal you), Allaah will heal him of that sickness."
Narrated as Abu Dawood, 3106; classed assaheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh
Abi Dawood
Imam an-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
It is mustahabb for the visitor, if he hopes that the sick person will
live, to offer supplication for him, whether there is hope that he
will live or it is possible. There are many saheeh hadeeths about
offering supplication for one who is sick, that I have compiled in the
book al-Adhkaar. … – Then he mentioned some of them.
End quote from al-Majmoo', 5/112
Whether the supplication for the sick person is offered individually
or by a group, if some people visit a sick person and one of them
offers supplication for him andthe rest say Ameen to hissupplication,
there is nothing wrong with something like that, especially if some of
those who are visiting do not know the du'aa's for such situations
very well.
Secondly:
It is not prescribed to offer supplication in congregation after the
prayers, because the basic principle with regard to acts of worship is
tawqeef [i.e., they can only be known through divine Revelation and
sound texts of hadeeth, with no room for ijtihad], andno such thing
has been narrated from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be
upon him) or his Companions.
The Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas was asked about an imam who
raises his hands after the prescribed prayers, and those who have
prayed behind him do likewise, and the imam says du'aa' and those who
are praying behind him say Ameen to his du'aa'.
They replied:
Acts of worship are based on tawqeef [i.e., they can only be known
through divine Revelation and sound texts of hadeeth, with no room for
ijtihad], so it is not permissible to say that these acts of worship
are prescribed at all or in terms of their number, form or place
except on the basis of shar'i evidence to that effect. But we know of
no Sunnah to that effect from the Prophet (blessings and peace of
Allah be upon him) either in terms of his words or actions, or in
terms of what he approved of.
End quote from Majallat al-Buhooth al-Islamiyyah, 17/55
But if this supplication is offered for a sick person on occasion, and
the imam offers supplicationand the people present say Ameen, there is
nothing wrong with that. But there is no need for that if the imam
tells the members of the congregation thattheir brother So and so is
sick and encourages them to offer supplication for him andvisit him.
That will fulfil the desired aim of offering supplication forthe sick
person and visiting him.

Islamic Stories - , A Feast for Clothes
Once upon a time in the Iranian city of Shiraz, there lived the famous
poet Sheikh Saadi. Like most other poets and philosophers, Sheikh
Saadi was not a rich man. He led a very simple life. A rich merchant
of Shiraz invited Sheikh Saadi along with a lot of other big
businessmen of the town on the occasion of his daughter's marriage
which was to be a grandaffair. Sheikh Saadi accepted the invitation
and decided to attend.
On the day of the wedding, the host and his family were receiving the
guests at the gate. They were ushering all the guests towards the
dining hall. All the rich people of the town attended the wedding.
They had come out in best of theirattires. Sheikh Saadi wore simple
clothes which were neither grand nor expensive. He waited in a corner
for someone to approach him but no one gave him as much as even a
second glance. Even the host did not acknowledge him and looked away.
Seeing all this, Sheikh Saadi quietlyleft the party and went to a shop
from where hecould hire clothes. There he chose a richly brocaded
dress which was embroidered in gold on the margins. He selected a
fancy turban and a waist-band to go with it. As he put on the hired
dress and looked into the mirror, he found himself a changedperson.
With this, he entered thedining hall and this time was welcomed with
open arms. The host embraced him as he would do to an old friend and
complimented him on the clothes he was wearing. On seeing him, he
said, "And here comesour favourite poet. Whattook you so long,
friend?We have been waiting for you for ages! How good of you to have
come. The gathering surely would have been incomplete without
yourgracious presence!" Saadi did not utter a word and allowed the
host to lead him to the dining room where other guests had assembled.
Tasty dishes had been laid out on grand carpets. Saadi wasoffered a
seat with soft cushions. The food was served in fine crockery and
cutlery made out of silver.
The host led Sheikh Saadi by hand and himself served out the chicken
soup and the fragrant rice to him. After this, something strange
happened. Sheikh Saadi dipped the corner of his waist-coat in the soup
and sprinkled some rice on it. Addressing the clothes, he said: "This
is a feast for you, you should enjoy it."
All the guests were now staring at him in surprise. The host
said,"Sir, what are doing? How can your colthes eat? And why should
they? To this query, Sheikh Saadi very calmly replied: "My dear
friend, I am indeed surprised with the question coming from you."
"Aren't you the same person who did not even throw a look at me when I
came dressed in simple clothes. I can guess that it is my clothes and
appearance that matter with you, not my individual worth.Now that I
have put on grand clothes, I see a world of difference in reception
here. All that I can now say is that this feast is meant for my
clothes, not for me."

A scholar in China, Islamic Stories - ,
A Muslim scholar (sheikh)was on a visit to China togive a series of
lectures to the local Muslim community. One day, he was scheduled to
give a lecture at a local hall andwas about to take a taxi along with
his companions to that location.
They got into the taxi and the Sheikh asked about the length of time it
would take to get to the lecture hall. The taxi driver, through the
interpreter, answered"Two hours."
The Sheikh immediately turned to his companions and said:"well, we can't
sit in this taxi with the driver for two hours and not tell him about
our religion. If we did that then we would be no different than any
other non-Muslim or kaffir who uses this taxi. We are the people that
Allah(SWT) chose to carry His message and honoured us to be Muslims. It
is ourduty to tell this person about Islam."
However, the driver was a native Chinese and didn't have a common
language with the Sheikh. They had to communicate through an
interpreter.
Sheikh to interpreter:"Ask the man if he believes in any religion?"
Driver: "No, I don't believe in religion. I just get up in the morning,
go to work and earn money. At the end of theday, I collect my money, go
buy some food and drink for my family. What do I need religion for?"
Sheikh: "Ask this man if he has ever heard anything about Islam."
Driver: "Not much. I've seen a tape once and showed Muslims as violent
people. I don't know much else."
Sheikh: "Ask him about computers. What does he think of computer?"
Driver: "I think the computer is an excellent invention. It is very
useful and very sophisticated."
Sheikh: "Does he think that the computer could have invented itself or
does he think that a human being invented it?"
Driver: "A human invented it, of course. It is not capable of inventing
itself."
Sheikh: "Which one is more complicated the computer or the human being?"
Driver: "The human being is more complicated, of course."
Sheikh: "O.K., if the computer must have been invented by a human being,
then it follows that a human being (which is more complicated) must also
have a creator."
Driver: "O.K."
Sheikh: "In Islam, we believe that Allah is the creator of human
beingsand all other beings. Fine, now let's move on. Assume that you
have never seen a computer before and never heard of it. If I brought a
computer to you and gave it to you. Would you know what to do with it?
Would you be able to use to its full potential?"
Driver: "No, I wouldn't."
Sheikh: "Now, if I gave you a catalogue for the computer, then you will
be able to better use it? Correct?"
Driver: "Correct!"
Sheikh: "In Islam, we view Quran as the catalogue used by human beings
to manage their lives. Without this catalogue, they will ruin
themselves! Now, if this inventor of the computer assembled the machine
and printed thecatalogue, what would be the next step? He would need to
train some engineers and others on how to spreadthe message about this
machine. These people would, in turn, train others and others until
everyone knows about the machine. In the example of Allah and Quran, the
prophets of Allah play the role of the engineers. They learn the message
and teach itto others so that the message will spread. Prophet Muhammad
(saw) is the final messanger of Allah and he was ordered to take the
message to all human beings."
By this time, the trip wascoming to an end and they almost reached the
lecture hall. But the Sheikh can see that there were tears comingout of
the driver's eyes. The words of the Sheikh was having a significant
effect on this driver.
Driver: "These ideas are very interesting to me. Do you mind spending 15
more minutes with me to tell me about this religion?"
The Sheikh agreed to spend those few minuteswith this person and did.The
man asked many questions and seemed genuine in his desire to learn more
about this religion. At the end of these few minutes, the driver said:
"I want to join this religion of yours. How do I do that?"
He was told that all he needs to do is say: "I bear witness that there
is no God but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad (saw) is his
servant and messenger."
