The Promises We Maketo Ourselves:
:->
We know that one of the traits of the believer is thathe/she keeps
promises. And we tend to think of that in terms of keeping promises to
others: family members, friends, business partners, etc.
But what about the promises we make to ourselves? Aren't those worth
keeping as well? Don't we all promise ourselves when we're young that
we will do something exciting and important in life? Don't we grow up
convinced that wewill change the world in some way? Aren't we sure
that we will do exciting things like climb a mountain, help the poor,
orsave people's lives somehow?
Why do we give up those dreams? They are not impossible. They are
achievable! Many people do such things. Many people do change the
world, help the poor, save people's lives, climb mountains, fly
planes, see the world… so why not us?What one person has done, another
can do.
And when we're older, don't we promise ourselvesfrom time to time that
we will get in shape, learn a new language, go back to school, write a
book, travel, memorize surahs from the Quran, and more? Aren't those
promises worth keeping? Don't we owe that to ourselves, as believers
and as human beings?
My goal here is not to guilt you, but to inspire you. Those dreams of
your youth, and those promises you've made to yourself, are within
your grasp. Maybe not all of them, but some of them. Or for now, how
about one of them. Start with that, and I will too, Insha'Allah.
Footnote: One year after writing the article above, I achieved one of
my lifelong dreams: at the ageof 46, I got a black belt in martial
arts. I started martial arts when I was 14 and I practiced on and off,
but I moved around so much that I never stayed inone place long enough
to graduate to black belt. Some might say that getting it at 46 is
very late. Maybe so, but I did it. Otherdreams of mine: to
publishseveral books, make a documentary film, get a master's degree,
travel through Africa, go cave exploring… Why not? It's never too
late, Insha'Allah, for me or for you.

Drop and drop makes an inundation:
"A little and a little, collected together, becomes a great deal; the
heap in the barn consists of single grains, and drop and drop makes an
inundation." – Arabic proverb
:->
Do what good you can in this life and don't worry that it's too
little, or that it won't change things, or that you do not see
immediate results. Your contribution matters. The ripples spread
outward, even unseen, so that your presence on earth eventually
affects everyoneelse in the world.
Or, if you don't put stock in proverbs, then remember the words of
Allah in Surat Az-Zalzalah:
"Then shall anyone who has done an atom's weightof good, see it! And
anyonewho has done an atom's weight of evil, shall see it." (Quran
99:7-8).
Never listen to those who say that it's pointless to try,or that the
good work you are doing is hopeless. The tiniest bit of good you do,
matters. An atom's weight of effort makes a difference! It changes
things, whether you see it or not.

if a person intends tobe sincere to Allah
"... So if a person intends tobe sincere to Allah so that he may
become a scholar, or pious, or one endowed with wisdom, or one who
discovers hidden realities etc, then such a person does not intend
Allah, rather he has made Allah a means for him to gain that inferior
matter…"
Something deep to think about... May Allah grant sincerity to all of us, ameen.

the relationship between the husband and wife should be based on mutuallove and kindness.
"According to the Qur'an the relationship between the husband and wife
should be based on mutuallove and kindness. Allah says: "And among His

"I am not fasting for my parents, I am fasting for Allah"
There was a little girl (six years old) who was fasting in Ramadhan,
even though it is not obligatory on people below the age of puberty.
She was in school, and at lunch time, when all the other children went
out to eat and have lunch, she sat in the classroom, because she was
fasting.
Her (non-muslim) teacher thought that she was too young to fast, and
so said that it was not necessary, and she could eat a little.
The girl still didn't eat. Then the teacher said:"Your parents are not
here,it doesn't matter if you eat a little".
The girl replied: "I am not fasting for my parents, I am fasting for Allah".
This simple statement had such a profound effect on the teacher, that
later she accepted Islam...!!

fruit
Chiku, is a sweet and delicious
tropical fruit with plenty of
nutritional benefits. Although a
native of American continent it is
grown largely in India and Mexico.
This fruit is soft and made of
easily digestible pulp giving a
crunchy and sweet flavor. The
sweetness of chiku can be related to
the simple sugars like fructose and
sucrose that make up the fruit and
which replenishes and revitalizes
our energy instantly. This
abundantly available fruit
surprisingly is a storehouseof many
nutrients, which contributeto our
overall health and wellness. Chiku
is very rich in dietary fibre, which
makes it a good laxative. Besides
that, it protects the outer membrane
of colon from carcinogenic toxins.
When it comes to antioxidants
although it doesnot belongto the
popular categories of berries but
nevertheless it is known for its anti-
oxidative properties due tothe
presence of Tanin. Tanins are
naturally occurring polyphenols,
which help in neutralizing acids.
Studies have found that tannins
have antiviral, anti-bacterial,
antiinflammator y and anti-parasitic
effects. Therefore, these compounds
are useful in antidiarrheal, prevents
bleeding and as a remedy for
haemorrhoids. Antioxidant vitamins
in sapota may be linked to the
presence of vitamin C (24.5% of
recommended daily intake per 100 g
of fruit), and vitamin A.
Consumption of foods rich in
vitamin C helps body develop
resistance against infection,and
prevents large formation ofharmful
free radicals.
Vitamin A is known for its
promotion of good vision. Besides it
is also known to protect from lung
and oral cavity cancers as well as
keeping healthy mucus membranes.
Ripened sapotas are a good source
of minerals like potassium, copper,
iron and vitamins like folate, niacin
and pantothenic acid. These
compounds are essential nutrients,
which promote optimal health, and
they involve in various metabolic
processes in the body acting as
cofactors for the enzymes. In order
to enjoy eating this healthyand
nutritious fruit, the following ways
of preparation and serving will
make this fruit diet more delicious
and attractive. Fresh ripe chiku can
be cut into four parts and can be
consumed directly after removing
the seeds and the outer covering.
Moreover, it can be added to fruit
salads and smothies. Chiku skin can
also be consumed. So next time you
come across a chiku or sapota you
will not fail to notice its wonderful
benefits as a fruit

People more likely to eat fruits within reach
Want to stay healthy - thenplace fruits in a clear bowl within arm's
reach, so that you could help yourself whenever you felt the urgeto
eat.
The new study says that when fruits are within reach, people are more
likely to eat them. Greater visibility of fruit increases their
intake, but the same does not hold true for vegetables.
Researchers Gregory J. Privitera and Heather E. Creary, both from St.
Bonaventure University, Olean, U.S., tested a total of96 college
students by placing apple slices and carrot cuts in either clear
oropaque bowls at a table close at arms' length or at a table two
metres away.
Participants watched as the food was taken out of its packaging and
were told that they were welcome to eat it, the journal Environment
and Behaviour reports.
After leaving the students alone with the food for 10 minutes, the
researchers found that when apples and carrots were left close to the
participants, those healthy foods were more likely to be eaten,
according to St. Bonaventure statement.
Interestingly, making the food more visible to participants by placing
them in clear bowls increased the intake of the apples but not the
carrots. The researchers said this might be due to the fact that fruit
is sweeter and may induce more motivation to eat than bitter-tasting
vegetables.
"Apples, but not carrots, have sugar, which is known to stimulate
brain reward regions that inducea 'wanting' for foods that contain
sugar," the authorswrote. "Hence, apple slices may be more visually
appealing than carrots."

‘Whatever situation you find yourself in, derive a point of benefit.’
One piece of advice I'll never forget is when it wassaid to me (or did
I read it somewhere?) that: 'Whatever situation you find yourself in,
derive a point of benefit.'
The last 3 weeks (and beforehand) for me have felt like no less than a
rollercoaster ride – sudden phone calls from family, surprises beyond
my expectation, births followed by deaths followed by spontaneous
family drama, abrupt change of plans, unexpected travelling, finding
myself in situationswhere I've been told to make big decisions in less
than 5mins! Phew, I guess you can say it's been slightly err…
challenging. But subhanallah, one thing that didn't leave my mind is
the golden advice: 'Whatever situation you find yourself in, derive a
point of benefit.' – And it was this that had me sitting & looking
over my situation and the changes that came with it, seeking out the
hidden fawa'id (benefits) and trying to take some lesson from it all.
Everybody has a story to tell, and this is the undisputed fact of
life. The maqadir (decrees) of Allah which are embedded into our lives
swiftly take us on a diverse course whereby we all emerge with
something different to oneanother – different experiences, different
strengths & weaknesses, different mentalities and viewpoints. The wise
one ishe/she who learns from these lessons of life, these Signs and
Sunnan of Allah, our Maker `azza wa jall.
For many, acting upon this advice of learning to derivebenefit from
every moment of life will mean taking a few minutes out on a regular
basis, to contemplate over the course of the day, week or even year.
Regardless of whether you perceive yoursituation to be good or bad(or
somewhere in between), there is always apoint of benefit which you can
obtain and take from. The more you do this, the more you develop your
optimism and judgement in matters – and this not only gives you a
healthy outlook on life's sudden twists and turns, but it
alsoincreases your Iman as youlearn to appreciate the Qadr of Allah,
gain husn al-dhann of Allah (good expectations & opinion) and overall
become a moregrateful slave of Allah.
