Some of those who have written about the history of civilization define civilization as “a social system which helps man to increase his cultural output.”
Civilization consists of four main elements: economical resources, political systems, moral traditions and science and arts. The development and progress of a civilization requires many factors such as geographical and economic factors, and psychological factors such as religion, language and education. The collapse of a civilization stems from factors which are the opposite of those which lead to its rise and development; the most important of these destructive factors include moral and intellectual decadence, lawlessness and breakdown of social systems, the spread of oppression and poverty, the spread of pessimism and apathy and the lack of competent and sincere leaders.
The story of civilization began when man first appeared, and it is a long chain which one civilized nation passes on to those who come after it. Civilization is not unique to any one land or race, rather it stems from the factors we have mentioned above. There is hardly any nation that has not written some of the pages of the history of civilization, but the thing that distinguishes one civilization from another is the strength of the foundation on which it is built, the great influence that it may have, and the benefits that humanity may enjoy as a result of its rise. The more universal a civilization is in its message, the more humane it is in its inclination, the more moral it is in its direction and the more realistic it is in its principles, the more lasting will be its impact on history, the longer it will endure and the more it will deserve to be honored.
Our civilization is a link in the chain of human civilizations; some civilizations came before it and others will follow. There were factors that contributed to the rise of our civilization, and there are reasons for its decline, but this is not the topic under discussion here. Rather, before we examine the wonders of this civilization, we should discuss the serious role that it played in the history of human progress, and how much it contributed to the fields of belief, science, ethics, rule, art and literature, and how it had a lasting impact on humanity of all peoples and in all places.
The most important thing that attracts the attention of the one who studies our civilization is that it is distinguished by the following features:
1.It is based on a foundation of absolute oneness in belief. It was the first civilization that proclaimed the message of One God Who has no partner or associate in His rule and dominion; He is the Only One Who is worshipped and He is the Only One Who is sought.
Allaah Almighty Says what means:}It is You we worship and You we ask for help.{]Quran 1: 5[
He is the One Who honors and humiliates, Who gives and withholds, and there is nothing in the heavens or on earth that is not subject to His dominion and held in His grasp.
This sublime understanding of the concept of oneness has a great effect in raising the level of mankind and of liberating the masses from the oppression of kings, nobles, powerful men and the clergy; in reforming the relationship between rulers and subjects; in guiding people to Allaah Alone, Who is the Creator of the universe and the Lord of the worlds. This belief also had a great effect on Islamic civilization which is virtually unique among all civilizations before or since in that it is free from all forms of idolatry and of idolatrous literature and philosophy in its beliefs, rule, art, poetry and literature. This is the reason why Islamic civilization refrained from translating the Iliad and the best of idolatrous Greek literature. It is also the reason why Islamic civilization fell short in some of the arts of sculpture and image-making, despite its prominence in the arts of inscription, engraving and architectural adornment. Islam, which declared war on idolatry and its manifestations, did not permit any expressions or relics of idolatry from ancient times to exist in its civilization, such as statues of great men, righteous men, Prophets or conquerors. Statues are one of the most prominent features of ancient and modern civilizations, because none of them took belief in oneness to the extent that Islamic civilization did.
This belief in oneness has an impact on all the foundations and systems produced by our civilization. So there is unity in its message, unity in its legislation, unity in its general aims, unity in humanity in general, unity in the way of life and pattern of thinking. Researchers studying the Islamic arts have noticed a unity of style and taste in different kinds of art, so that a piece of Andalusian ivory, a piece of Egyptian textile, a piece of Syrian pottery and a piece of Iranian metalwork, despite the differences in their forms and ornamentation, all have the same style and character.
2.The second of the characteristics of our civilization is that it is human in its inclinations and objectives, universal in its ambition and message.
The Quran declared the oneness of mankind despite the differences in their races, places of origin and abodes. Allaah Says )what means(:}O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allaah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allaah is Knowing and Acquainted.{]Quran 49: 13[
When the Quran declared this universal oneness of mankind with regard to truth, goodness and dignity, it made its civilization the factor that brought together all the brilliant minds of all nations and peoples over whom the banner of Islam flew. Hence, whilst every civilization may be able to boast of its brilliant sons of one nationality, only Islamic civilization can boast of the brilliant minds from all nations and peoples who built it. For Abu Haneefah, Maalik, Ash-Shaafi`i, Ahmad, Al-Khaleel, Sibawayh, Al-Kindi, Al-Ghazaali, Al-Faraabi, Ibn Rushd and their like were all of different origins but they were among the brilliant minds through whom Islamic civilization gave to humanity the marvelous intellectual products of sound human thought.
3.The third of the characteristics of our civilization is the way in which it gave prominence to moral principles in all its systems and fields of activity, and never abandoned these principles or used them as means of benefitting a state, a group or an individual. In ruling, in science, in legislation, in war, in peace, in economy, in the family; it paid attention to these moral principles in legislation and in implementation of laws. In this field it reached a high level that has never been attained by any civilization before or since. The Islamic civilization left behind a legacy in that field which deserves to be admired for it alone, among all civilizations, guaranteed the happiness of man in the purest sense, not contaminated with any misery.

Welcome to Islam, - The Quran is the delight of the heart

Allaah, the Exalted, revealed the Quran, to be a beacon of light that cannot be extinguished. It is a methodology and way of life that is perfect in all respects. In it is strength that cannot be equaled or repelled. It is the foundation of Eemaan )Faith( and the spring of knowledge. Allaah willed that the Quran be what quenches the thirst for knowledge. It is the delight of the people of wisdom. The Quran is the greatest cure for all ailments. It is Allaah's Rope that cannot be severed. It is the Wise Reminder and the truly Straight Path.
In the Quran are the parables of those who were before us, a prophesy of that which will be after us and a criterion to judge between us. It is Truth with certainty that was revealed to us. The one who lives according to its dictations will be rewarded. The one who judges according to it will be just. The one who calls to it is on the Straight Path. Allaah raises and lowers people's status based on their adherence to it. The Quran, on the Day of Judgment, will intercede on behalf of those who recited it.
Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam said:"The one who reads a single letter from the Book of Allaah will be rewarded with one good deed. )Know that( A good deed is multiplied ten times over. I do not say Alif Laam Meem is one letter. Verily, Alif is one letter, Laam is one letter, Meem is one letter."]At-Tirmithi[
The Book of Allaah to mankind's guidance is like the soul in relation to the body. Therefore, he who abandons its recitation and does not act in accordance to its laws is in a state of spiritual death. Allaah Almighty Says )what means(:"And is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him light by which to walk among the people like one who is in darkness, never to emerge there from?"]Quran 6:122[
A person without Quran is like a person without water, air and medicine. Allaah, the Most Exalted, Says )what means(:"And We send down of the Quran, that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss."]Quran 17:82[
The Quran is a healing for the body and the soul. Whenever life becomes hard and complicated, the Light of the Quran will always brighten the way. It will be a source of solace and tranquility. It will be a defender to you when you are powerless and in need. When the Muslim recites the Quran, he will feel matchless tranquility in his heart and being. This causes him only to fear Allaah alone.
Allaah Almighty Says )what means(:"Those to whom people ]i.e. hypocrites[ said, 'Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.' But it ]merely[ increased them in faith, and they said, 'Sufficient for us is Allaah, and ]He is[ the best Disposer of affairs.' So they returned with favor from Allaah and bounty, no harm having touched them. And they pursued the pleasure of Allaah, and Allaah is the Possessor of great bounty. That is only Satan who frightens ]you[ of his supporters. So fear them not, but fear Me, if you are ]indeed[ believers."]Quran 3:173-175[
Sadly, many have not taken this Quran into consideration and have neglected its recitation and implementation. They sought the worldly life and neglected the Hereafter. Allaah Says )what means(:"And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allaah. They follow not except assumption, and they are not but falsifying."]Quran 6:116[
Tragically, there are those who recite the Quran in its entirety and finish with little more than with what they began with in terms of contemplation and action. Some are so concerned with how they sound, they beautify their voice without ever listening to what is being ordered or prohibited. Truly, there are many reciters of the Quran that the Quran is free from them and their evil. They recite the Quran and are oppressive to themselves and others by not following its orders or forbidding its prohibitions.
Nothing is more valuable to a Muslim in his worldly life and in the Hereafter than reciting the Quran and reflecting and trying to comprehend its meaning. In doing so, an individual will become acquainted with what is good and what is evil. He will see the effects of disobedience of Allaah and its punishment in the parables of those who have come before us. An example of such a punishment is the flood that was sent upon the people of Nooh )Noah( may Allaah exalt his mention and others similar to it. It is a source of inspiration and it strengthens one's belief in Allaah. For this reason, Allaah Says )what means(:"…And when His )Allaah's( verses )Quran( are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely."]Quran 8:2[
This Book was sent and revealed from above the seven Heavens so that it could be comprehended and implemented, it is not just to be recited while the heart is pre-occupied. Allaah Almighty Says )what means(:
"This is a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, ]O Muhammad, sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam[, that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded."]Quran 38:29[
What has happened to our hearts? Why are our hearts locked out and unresponsive to the Quran? Why do the words enter from one ear and exit out the other? Why have our hearts hardened? Let us comprehend the Quran and implement it in our lives. Let us be from those who implement the Quran in our days and recite it during our nights.

Welcome to Islam, - Slavery and freedom

bismillah.gif

The only option for man is to choose between two slaveries: slavery of his Creator, or slavery of all else. The prevalent Western thought today is essentially atheistic in nature, for it traces its origins to a reaction against the Church authority in medievalEurope, which subsequently became a reaction against religion in general. The effort was really to formulate a philosophical basis independent of religion, which was to become the foundation of the new scientific, political, economic, social and psychological thought.
This does not imply that all the details of knowledge thus produced are false, but that in essence, the foundation of all such knowledge is frail.
Often we mistakenly isolate the Western thought from its original environment and its secular and atheistic roots, considering it sound human thought valid for all times and places. Quite often, we even naively go on to claim, about one or another aspect of this thought, that our own Deen )religion( asserts precisely the same, or at least there is no contradiction.
In this article, I give an example of the concept of freedom, that is more or less agreed upon in the contemporary world that illustrates my point.
A free person is one whose freedom is absolute with no bounds whatsoever. He acts as he wills and does what he wills. However, any act necessitates knowledge, motivation and ability. An absolutely free man, thus, must possess absolute knowledge, perfect motivation and limitless ability. This is outright impossible. No actor can possess absolute knowledge, motivation and ability unless he is totally independent and self-sufficient of others and needs no knowledge or skill from others, for that would violate absolute freedom.
Hence, the claim of the advocates of democracy that man cannot be free if he obeys a law that is not of his own making, is essentially correct. However, they admit that man must live in a society, and this social life necessitates the existence of a State that commands, prohibits and watches; and the laws whereby the State carries out all these activities cannot be made by all the constituents of society.
Though the participation of individuals in a democratic system is more, than in alternative systems, the enactment of laws is inevitably the work of a minority of individuals who constitute the legislative system. It follows that even in a democracy, the people are not really free except to a small extent.
In fact, we argue that even participation in the enactment of laws is not a guarantee, for individual freedom for the individuals will invariably be dictated by the desires of their lower selves.
An individual who deprives himself of Divine guidance ends up doing all that his lower desires demand or his lust dictates -- like engaging in excess in food, drinking wine, drugs and obscenity. Such a human being -- and the likes of this abound in the West today -- is not free. True, he may not ostensibly be a slave of another human being, but he is a slave of his own low desires.
What is the way out of this slavery? The kind of freedom demanded by Western philosophies, in fact, is outright impossible. All people, including the atheists, admit that man is not his own creator, or his own sustainer; his knowledge is earned, not essential, and imperfect, and that he must depend for his life on factors out of his control. Sunlight comes from sun, water from rain, vegetation from the land, and he needs all that, without controlling any of it. So how is freedom possible? How can he be self-sufficient?
The faithful believe that Allaah is the Creator, the Omniscient and Omnipotent, Who does as He pleases, and needs no one. Man, on the other hand, is created, and by virtue of this, is owned by his Creator. The one owned is a slave, not free. This essential fact of creation points to man being a slave, not a free entity.
However, he is a slave of the Creator and not of creation like himself. This slavery to his Creator is the very essence of his being, whether he likes it or not. In all that he does, he is bound and limited by the Will of his Creator.
True, man too has a will and freedom of action, but it is his Creator who decided to give him this freedom of will. Man's will, therefore, is not absolute, but limited by the Will of his Creator. If the Creator has the absolute Will, man may will what does not actualize, and may encounter what he does not like.
The Creator who made for His creation natural laws that are beyond the domain of human will, also made the laws of Sharee'ah -- a code for a life of willing submission to Allaah, without which true success -- worldly or heavenly -- is impossible.
Doing what you will against the will of Allaah even with your own property is a challenge to His authority, as mentioned in the Quran )which means(:"They said: O Shu'ayb! Does your salaah )prayer( enjoin you that we should forsake what our fathers worshipped or that we should not do what we please with regard to our property?"]Quran 11:87[
Pharaoh also thought his opinion superior and dictated it to his people, as mentioned in the Quran )which means(:"Pharaoh said: 'I do only show you what I see, and I do but guide you to wise policy'."]Quran 40:29[
But the Creator Lord says )what means(:"No just appraisal of Allaah do they make when they say: 'Allaah sends down nothing to man )by way of revelation(.'"]Quran 6:91[
And )what means(:"Does man think that he has been left aimless?"]Quran 75:38[
And )what means(:"Say: 'See what things Allaah has sent down to you for sustenance? Yet you hold some things unlawful and others lawful )without authority from Allaah(.' Say: 'Has Allaah indeed permitted you, or do you attribute lies to Allaah?'"]Quran 10:59[
We conclude that the assertion that man is free or must be free, in the absolute sense used widely in the West, is utterly falsified by reality. Furthermore, such an assertion negates belief that man is a slave-servant to Allaah and must obey His decrees. Even some Christian authors seem to have realized this, among them the famous English author Lewis who said, roughly: 'I was not born to be free, rather to listen and obey.'
