Fathwa, - A Bad Odor from the Mouth While Fasting

:->

Question:
Since last winter, I have gotten myself into the habit of fasting every Monday and Thursday, acting upon theSunnahof the Prophet,sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and I thank Allaah for this great blessing. However, many people criticize me because of an extremely bad odor that emanates from my mouth whenever I fast, despite me brushing my teeth. My biggest problem is that I am working now, which makes the situation even worse! I do not want to discontinue fasting, but I nevertheless require a solution. Please note that I am not looking for a justification to stop fasting.
Answer:
Assalaamu ‘Alaykum, dear sister Aalaa'.
It is often the case that the bad odor emanating from the mouth is due to teeth or gum problems. This could also be due to the accumulation of food remnants between the teeth, which results is such an odor due to the bacterial fermentation caused by the bacteria that normally live in the mouth.
You can get rid of this by constantly maintaining clean and healthy teeth. Use aSiwaak)stick brush( immediately after having any meal or drink, use dental floss to clear the area between the teeth and gargle daily with mouthwash.
However, if you have cavities in your teeth or any other problem, then you must attend to them and treat them comprehensively.
There are other things that may be causing the bad mouth odor, such as problems in the respiratory system, the digestive system or the nasal sinuses )nasal pockets(. If you are suffering from any of these problems, then you must attend to them immediately. We think that if you do so, your problem will be solved.

Fathwa, - Increasing Weight DuringRamadan

:->

Question:
How can I increase my weight duringRamadan, or at least maintain the same weight, because I am very skinny?
Answer:
Assalaamu ‘Alaykum, dear sister Maha.
I hope that you are not skinny due to a physical problem, like being diabetic for example. This does not seem to be the case from the way you stated your question.
Therefore, I advise you to consume more of the types of food that result in an increase in one’s weight. Make sure that your meals include more calories than your body needs.
Your food must include more of the following:
Nuts
Dried fig
Dates
Sesame
Fenugreek
Anise
Honey
Bananas
Fresh fruit juice
Full fat milk
Rice
Wheat
Barley
Oats
French fries
Carbohydrates
Your must stay away from anything that could result in emotional and psychological disorders and make sure you recite the Quran more often, because it is a cure in itself, and gives tranquility and peace of mind.

Fathwa, - The Impact of Fasting on Blood Pressure

:->

Question:
I have a question regarding a drop in blood pressure: does it affect fasting? Please give me some details on the issue, and what are the cases of high blood pressure that could prevent a person from fasting?
Answer:
Assalaamu ‘Alaykum,
Perhaps you meant to ask about the impact fasting has on blood pressure. Blood pressure should not prevent a person from fasting unless it is high enough to require medication to maintain its level and one cannot wait until he breaks his fast to take such medication. Normally, such high blood pressure )diastolic 140( is accompanied by the failure of vital organs, like the kidneys, the retina, the heart or the lungs, and thus one cannot wait until she breaks his fast to consume the medication. This is also the case when the blood pressure is very low. However, normal blood pressure does not prevent one from fasting.
Does being a person with an abnormal blood pressure necessarily mean that he cannot fast? The answer to this is no, because he can schedule his medicine to be consumed after she breaks the fast. She can take all the needed doses from sunset to dawn, before she starts to fast. However, she must only do so after consulting her physician, because circumstances differ from one patient to another, and it also depends on the type of medication one must take. All these matters are usually stated on the prescription.
