THE LAST SERMON OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD (peace be upon him)
This sermon was delivered on the Ninth Day of Dhul-Hijjah, 10 A.H.(632
CE) in the 'Uranah valley of Mount Arafat in Makkah. It was the
occasion of the annual rites of Hajj (the pilgrimage). It is also
known as the Farewell Pilgrimage.
After praising, and thanking Allah (The One True God) the Prophet
began with the words:
"O People! lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether after this
year I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore, listen carefullyto
what I am saying and Take These Words to Those Who Could Not Be
Present Here Today.
"O People! just as you regard this month, this day, this city as
Sacred, soregard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred
trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners.
Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed
meet your LORD, and that he will indeed reckon your deeds.
"Allah has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all
interest obligations shall henceforth be waived. Your capital is yours
to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity. Allah has
Judged that there shall be no interest and that all the interest due
to Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib (Prophet's uncle) be waived.
"Every right arising out of homicide in pre-Islamic days is henceforth
waived and the first such right that I waive is that arising fromthe
murder of Rabiah ibnal-Harithiah.
"O Men! the unbelievers indulge in tampering with the calender in
order to make permissible that which Allah forbade, and to prohibit
which Allah has made permissible. With Allah the months are twelve in
number. Four of them are holy, three ofthese are successive and one
occurs singly between the months of Jumada and Shaban.
"Beware of Satan, for thesafety of your religion. He has lost all hope
of that he will be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of
following him in small things.
"O People! it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your
women but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken
them as your wivesonly under Allah's trust and with His permission. If
they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and
clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for
they are yourpartners and committed helpers. And it is your right that
they do not make friends with anyone of whom you do not approve, as
well as never to be unchaste.
"O People! listen to me in earnest, worship Allah, say your five daily
prayers, fast during month of Ramadan, and give your wealth in
Zakat(obligatory charity). Perform Hajj if you can afford to.
"All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a
non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white
has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over
white except by piety and goodaction. Learn that every Muslim is a
brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one
brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to
a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly.
"Do not therefore do injustice to yourselves. Remember one day you
will meet Allah and answer your deeds. So beware, do not astray from
the path of righteousness after I am gone.
"O People! No Prophet or Apostle Will Come after Me and No New Faith
WillBe Born. Reason well, therefore, O People! and understand words
which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the QUR'AN and my
SUNNAH (i.e., sayings, deeds, and approvals) and if you follow these
you will never go astray.
"All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those
to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than
those who listen to me directly.
"Be my witness O Allah, that I have conveyed your message to your people."
As part of this sermon, the Prophet recited them a Revelation from
Allah which he had just received and which completed the Qur'an, forit
was the last passage to be revealed:
This day the disbelievers despair of prevailing against your religion,
so fear them not, but fear Me (Allah)! This day have Iperfected for
you your religion and fulfilled My favor unto you, and it hath been My
good pleasure to choose Islam for you as your religion (Surah 5, Ayah
3).
The sermon was repeated sentence by sentence by Safwan's brother
Rabiah (RA), whohad a powerful voice, at the request of the Prophet
and he faithfully proclaimed to over ten thousand gathered on the
occasion. Toward the end of his sermon, the Prophet asked "O
people,have I faithfully deliveredunto you my message?" Apowerful
murmur of assent "O Allah, yes!", arose from thousands of pilgrims and
the vibrant words "Allahumma na'm"rolled like thunder throughout the
valley. The Prophet raised his forefinger and said: "Be my witness O
Allah, that I have conveyed your message to your people."
Allah: Allah is the proper name in Arabic for The One and Only God,
The Creator and Sustainer of the universe. It is used bythe Arab
Christians and Jews for the God (Eloh-imin Hebrew; 'Allaha' in
Aramaic, the mother tongue of Jesus). The word Allah does not havea
plural or gender. Allah does not have any associate or partner, and He
does not beget nor was He begotten. SWT is an abbreviation of
Arabicwords that mean 'Glory Be To Him.'

Why Are We So Divided?
WHY ARE WE SO DIVIDED?
... Because of Shirk, innovations and leaving the Sunnah
All Praise is for Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) Lord of all the
creation and May His peace and Blessings be upon is last Prophet
Muhammad (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) and upon the Prophet's
(sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) family and upon the companions and on
all those who follow the path of guidance until the last day.
We saw in last weeks issue that without doubt the Muslim Ummah is in
adivided and fragmented state and that this division is prohibited in
Islaam. Rather Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) has enjoined upon us to
hold onto the rope of Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala), which we
established is the Qur'aanand the Sunnah as understood by the
Companions. But how didwe reach this state in the first place, what
causes disunity?
Shirk - Associating partners in worship with Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala)
Without doubt one of themajor causes for people splitting up the
religion and leaving holding on to the rope of Allaah (subhaanahu wa
ta'aala) is shirk. This is the grave sin of ascribing partners with
Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) in worship. Today throughout the world
there are numerous examples of shirk amongst the Ummah, such as those
who call upon the dead in the grave. Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala)
says:
"And invoke not besides Allaah anything that will neither profit you
nor hurt you, but if (in case) you did so, you shall certainly be one
of the Dhalimoon (polytheists and wrong-doers)." [Surah Yoonus 10:106]
Verily Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) has created us to worshipHim
alone, as He (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) says:
"And I (Allaah) created not the jinn and mankindexcept that they
should worship Me (Alone)." [Surah adh-Dhaariyaat 51:56]
So the one who gives worship to other than Allaah (subhaanahu wa
ta'aala) has he not committed the most severe sin. Allaah (subhaanahu
wa ta'aala) says:
"Verily! Allaah forgives not (the sin of) setting uppartners (in
worship) with Him, but He forgiveswhom He wills sins other than that."
[Surah an-Nisaa 4:116]
It is reported that Ibn Masood (radhi-Allaahu 'anhu) asked the
Prophet(sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam):
"Which is the Greatest sin?" The Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa
sallam) said: "That you set up a rival for Allaah, While He is the one
who created you." [Bukhaaree]
O noble reader it will not be hidden from you that throughout the
world Muslims are stooped in such practices of calling upon the dead
saint in the grave, asking him to remove their difficulty whether it
be Abdul Qaadir al Jeelanee or al Badawee or other peoplewho's graves
have been made places of worship. How can unity be achieved amongst
the Muslims when some Muslims cannot unify their worship for Allaah
(subhaanahu wa ta'aala) alone? O noble reader consider the following,
how many Muslims:
Wear Amulets and charms, despite the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa
sallam) saying:
"Whoever wears an amulet has committed shirk." [Ahmad]
Read astrology in magazines or go to fortune tellers, despite the
Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) saying:
"Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and asks him something and believes
in his words, willhave his prayers rejected for forty days." [Muslim]
So while all these non-Islaamic beliefs and practices are present
amongst the Muslims how can unity take place? Is not our first
obligation to give da'wah to those Muslims who are stooped in
thesepractices? Thereby callingto tawheed as all 124,000Prophets from
Aadam (alayhi-salam) to the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam)
did. They all began their call to the people with Tawheed -
worshipping Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) alone.
Having incorrect beliefs
Another major reason fordisunity is the wide range of beliefs
prevalent amongst the Muslims. Despite us having the same Qur'aan and
the same Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), Muslims still
havedifferent beliefs. Why is this? If we all are referring back to
the Qur'aan and the Sunnah in every matter then whythe differences.
Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) says:
"(And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to
Allaah and His Messenger (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), if you
believe in Allaah and in the Last Day. That is better and more
suitable for final determination." [Surah an-Nisaa 4:59]
So verily O noble reader, imagine if every Muslim acted upon this ayah
- would there be any differences then? NO , except maybe in the issues
of fiqh, such as the prayer. But our beliefs and methodology would be
one, so why is this notthe case? It is because many Muslims today do
not refer every issue backto Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) and His
Messenger (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), ratherthey ask their local
Imaam or their parents or refer it back to their madhab.
Know O noble reader thatthe first thing that all the Prophets called
to was the rectification of the beliefs, before calling to the
Islaamic state or to Jihaad, the first thing was purifying the beliefs
of the Muslim. So how can we have unity while there are Muslims who
believe:
That Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) is everywhere, despite Allaah
(subhaanahu wa ta'aala) saying:
"They fear their Lord Who is above them, and they do what they are
commanded." [Surah an-Nahl 16:50]
That the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) was not human and was
made from light,despite Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) saying:
"Say (O Muhammad sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam): 'I am only a human
being like you. It is revealed to me that your Ilaah (God worthy of
being worshipped) is One Ilaah (God)." [Surah Fussilat 41:6]
That the saying of an Imaam should be acted upon over the hadeeth,
despite Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) saying:
"And let those who oppose the Messenger's (Muhammad sal-Allaahu
'alayhe wa sallam) commandment (i.e. his Sunnah) beware, lest some
Fitnah (trials i.e. shirk) should befall them or a painful torment be
inflicted on them." [Surah an-Noor 24:63]
That Imaan does not increase or decrease, despite the Prophet
(sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) saying:
"Imaan has seventy odd or sixty odd branches. The most virtuous of
them is the statement, 'There is none worthy of worship except
Allaah', and the slightest of them is to remove something harmful from
the road. And hayaa is a branch of Imaan." [Bukhaaree and Muslim]
Bid'ah - Innovations in the religion
Another cause for disunity and not holding fast to the rope of Allaah
(subhaanahu wa ta'aala) is the occurrence of innovations in this
Ummah.
Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) has informed us in the Qur'aan that He
has completed this religion of Islaam for us as He (subhaanahu wa
ta'aala) says:
"This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour
upon you, and have chosen for you Islaam as your religion." [Surah
al-Maa'idah, 5:3]
Since the religion is complete how can it be that we need to add
newthings and ways of worship to Islaam? Whatever was not part ofthe
religion at the time of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam)
cannot be accepted as a part of the religion now. The Prophet
(sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) has warned us against adding new
things to thereligion when he (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said:
"Whoever Innovates in this affair of ours that which is not from it
will have it rejected." [Muslim]
The people who propose unity at all costs have a saying that 'An
innovation that unites us is better than a Sunnah which divides'.
SubhanAllaah look at such a statement O noble reader, innovations are
grave and serious and a cause for entering the fire as he (sal-Allaahu
'alayhe wa sallam) said:
"... and every innovation is misguidance and all misguidance is in the
Hellfire." [Reported by an-Nasaa'ee (1/224)]
So if someone said to youlook there is a fire over there, lets all
hold hands and unify and then go in to it, you would think they were
crazy! So how can we come together upon something as dangerous as
innovations, such as the innovations of mystics, who practice all
kinds of weird and innovated invocations, which at times involve
switching off the lights or chanting one of Allaah's name so that
after some time what they are chanting isunrecognizable as a name of
Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala).Or the innovations of those who take
their scholars as 'spiritual leaders' giving their allegiance to them
and 'selling' themselves to these 'scholars' obeying everything they
say. How O noble reader can unity occur amongst all the Muslims as
long as these practices, which have nothing to do with Islaam, keep
occurring?
Blind following and Partisanship
This is one of the most evil of occurrences today and a major cause
for disunity. Muslims are following their madhahab or their scholars
over and above the Sunnah of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa
sallam) despite Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) saying:
"And whosoever opposesthe Messenger (Muhammad sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa
sallam) after the right path has been shown clearly to him, andfollows
other than the believers' way, We shall keep him in the path he has
chosen, and burn himin Hell - what an evil destination!" [Surah
an-Nisaa 4:115]
When you tell Muslims that 'you should do this because it says so in
the Qur'aan and the Sunnah',they reply 'well that's notwhat it says in
my madhab' or 'that's not what my Shaykh says'. SubhanAllaah, O noble
reader why did Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) send us His final
Messenger (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) if it was not to teach us
the religion of Islaam.
Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) says:
"But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O
Muhammad sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) judge in all disputes between
them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and
accept (them) with full submission." [Surah an-Nisaa 4:65]
No Muslim will openly sayI am disobeying the Prophet (sal-Allaahu
'alayhe wa sallam), but how many of us ask for the proof on issues of
beliefs and practices and look to see what is the truth.
Another problem is the setting up of groups and parties with members,
then being loyal only to that party, believing in the beliefs and aims
of that party - not questioning it. Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) has
warned against this:
"And be not of Al-Mushrikoon (polytheists). Of those who split their
religion, and became sects, each group rejoicing in that which is with
it." [Surah ar-Room 30:31-32]
Setting up groups is a cause for disunity and spreads hatred amongst
the Muslims so that a Muslim from one group will not give salaam to a
Muslim from another group just because they belong to different
groups. Or a group from one masjid will not like Muslims from another
masjid to come and pray in their mosque. All this stems from
partisanship and it divides the Ummah. Unity will not occur whilst
Muslims are in this state rather unity will occur when an end isput to
partisanship (hizbiyyah) and Muslims love each other because they are
all have the same aims, beliefs and practices.
The Means for Revival
Having looked at the reason why we are so divided, the question now
arises as to what themeans for reviving this Ummah are. Allaah
(subhaanahu wa ta'aala) has given us the means for the revival of this
Ummah, when He (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) says:
"Verily! Allaah will not change the condition of a people until they
change what is within themselves." [Surah ar-Ra'd 13:11]
The Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) also said:
"When you involve yourselves in interest bearing business
transactions, and you hold on to the tails of cows, and you are
pleased with agriculture (i.e. the land) and you abandon making Jihaad
in the Cause of Allaah, Allaah will send humiliation down upon you. He
will not remove itfrom you until you returnback to your Religion."
[Abu Dawood and al-Bayhaqee]
So this humiliation that Muslims are under will not be removed from us
until we return back to the religion of Islaam. So what is the
religion of Islaam if not Tawheed, having the correct Aqeedah,
worshipping Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) correctly? So should we not
start our revival with these issues.
So just as the condition of the Arabs during the Days of Ignorance
(Jaahiliyyah) was not rectified except by the coming of their Prophet
Muhammad (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) with revelation from the
heavens, which aided them in this world and which will save them in
the next, then know O noble reader the foundation that the Islaamic
revival must be built upon in this time, is nothing else but the
return to the Qur'aan andthe Sunnah, as implemented by the noble
companions.
We know from the Book of Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) and the Sunnah
of His Messenger (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) that the way towards
realising this revival is only one way, and it is the way which Allaah
(subhaanahu wa ta'aala) has mentioned inHis (subhaanahu wa ta'aala)
saying:
"And verily, this is My Straight Path, so follow it, and follow not
(other) paths, for they will separate you away from His Path." [Surah
al-An'aam 6:153]
The Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) explained this
to his Companions. Thus, one day he (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam)
drew a straight line for them on the ground and then drew short lines
on the sides of it. Then, while his(sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam)
noble finger moved up and down the straight line, he (sal-Allaahu
'alayhe wa sallam) recited the aforementioned verse. Then he
(sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) pointed to the lines that were drawn
on the sides of the straight line and said:
"This is the Path of Allaah and these are the (other) paths. At the
top of each of these (other) ways, there is a devil calling towards
it." [Authentic hadeeth, graded in Dhilaal-ul-Jannah fee Takhreej-is
Sunnah(16-17)]
Furthermore, Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) says:
"And whosoever opposesthe Messenger (Muhammad sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa
sallam) after the right path has been shown clearly to him, andfollows
other than the believers' way, We shall keep him in the path he has
chosen, and burn himin Hell - what an evil destination!" [Surah
an-Nisaa 4:115]
In this ayah there is profound and extensive wisdom, for Allaah
(subhaanahu wa ta'aala),has connected the "the believers' way" to what
the Messenger (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) came with. The Messenger
(sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) has (also) indicated this pointin the
hadeeth about the splitting up of the Ummah into sects. When he
(sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) was asked concerning the saved sect,
he (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) responded: "That which (adheres to
what) I and my companions are upontoday."
What then is the wisdom behind Allaah's mentioning of "the believers'
way" in this ayah? And what is the significance in the Messenger of
Allaah's (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) linking of his companions to
himself in the previous hadeeth?
The answer is: These noble Companions (radhi-Allaahu 'anhum) were the
ones who received the two revelations (i.e. the Qur'aan and Sunnah)
from the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), having
that explained to them by him (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam)
directly, without there being any intermediary. They best knew how to
implement the Sunnah, so after knowing this O noble reader can any
Islaamic revival take place when the way of the Companions
(radhi-Allaahu 'anhum) is abandoned and not adhered to, rather No it
can not. For us to revive Islaam and bring unity to the Muslims we
must adopt the way and example of the Noble Companions (radhi-Allaahu
'anhum).
Imaam Maalik (rahima-hullaah) said:
"The latter part of this Ummah will not be rectified except by that
which rectified its formerpart." [ash-Shifaa of Qaadee 'Iyyaadh,
(2/676)]
So it will be clear to the reader that the only way to revive the
Ummah is toreturn every affair of the Muslim back to the Qur'aan and
the Sunnah as understood and implemented by the best generation, the
Companions (radhi-Allaahu 'anhum). To believe as they believed, to
worship as they worshipped, to look like them, to give da'wah in the
way they gave it. Then only will we be united and have a true Islaamic
revival.
So dear noble brothers and sisters your Lord (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) says....
"Has not the time come for the hearts of those who believe to be
affected by Allaah's Reminder (this Qur'aan), and that which has been
revealed of the truth." [Surah al-Hadeed 57:16]

havedifferent beliefs. Why is this? If we all are referring back to
the Qur'aan and the Sunnah in every matter then whythe differences.
Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) says:
"(And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to
Allaah and His Messenger (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), if you
believe in Allaah and in the Last Day. That is better and more
suitable for final determination." [Surah an-Nisaa 4:59]
So verily O noble reader, imagine if every Muslim acted upon this ayah
- would there be any differences then? NO , except maybe in the issues
of fiqh, such as the prayer. But our beliefs and methodology would be
one, so why is this notthe case? It is because many Muslims today do
not refer every issue backto Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) and His
Messenger (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), ratherthey ask their local
Imaam or their parents or refer it back to their madhab.
Know O noble reader thatthe first thing that all the Prophets called
to was the rectification of the beliefs, before calling to the
Islaamic state or to Jihaad, the first thing was purifying the beliefs
of the Muslim. So how can we have unity while there are Muslims who
believe:
That Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) is everywhere, despite Allaah
(subhaanahu wa ta'aala) saying:
"They fear their Lord Who is above them, and they do what they are
commanded." [Surah an-Nahl 16:50]
That the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) was not human and was
made from light,despite Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) saying:
"Say (O Muhammad sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam): 'I am only a human
being like you. It is revealed to me that your Ilaah (God worthy of
being worshipped) is One Ilaah (God)." [Surah Fussilat 41:6]
That the saying of an Imaam should be acted upon over the hadeeth,
despite Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) saying:
"And let those who oppose the Messenger's (Muhammad sal-Allaahu
'alayhe wa sallam) commandment (i.e. his Sunnah) beware, lest some
Fitnah (trials i.e. shirk) should befall them or a painful torment be
inflicted on them." [Surah an-Noor 24:63]
That Imaan does not increase or decrease, despite the Prophet
(sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) saying:
"Imaan has seventy odd or sixty odd branches. The most virtuous of
them is the statement, 'There is none worthy of worship except
Allaah', and the slightest of them is to remove something harmful from
the road. And hayaa is a branch of Imaan." [Bukhaaree and Muslim]
Bid'ah - Innovations in the religion
Another cause for disunity and not holding fast to the rope of Allaah
(subhaanahu wa ta'aala) is the occurrence of innovations in this
Ummah.
Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) has informed us in the Qur'aan that He
has completed this religion of Islaam for us as He (subhaanahu wa
ta'aala) says:
"This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour
upon you, and have chosen for you Islaam as your religion." [Surah
al-Maa'idah, 5:3]
Since the religion is complete how can it be that we need to add
newthings and ways of worship to Islaam? Whatever was not part ofthe
religion at the time of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam)
cannot be accepted as a part of the religion now. The Prophet
(sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) has warned us against adding new
things to thereligion when he (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said:
"Whoever Innovates in this affair of ours that which is not from it
will have it rejected." [Muslim]
The people who propose unity at all costs have a saying that 'An
innovation that unites us is better than a Sunnah which divides'.
SubhanAllaah look at such a statement O noble reader, innovations are
grave and serious and a cause for entering the fire as he (sal-Allaahu
'alayhe wa sallam) said:
"... and every innovation is misguidance and all misguidance is in the
Hellfire." [Reported by an-Nasaa'ee (1/224)]
So if someone said to youlook there is a fire over there, lets all
hold hands and unify and then go in to it, you would think they were
crazy! So how can we come together upon something as dangerous as
innovations, such as the innovations of mystics, who practice all
kinds of weird and innovated invocations, which at times involve
switching off the lights or chanting one of Allaah's name so that
after some time what they are chanting isunrecognizable as a name of
Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala).Or the innovations of those who take
their scholars as 'spiritual leaders' giving their allegiance to them
and 'selling' themselves to these 'scholars' obeying everything they
say. How O noble reader can unity occur amongst all the Muslims as
long as these practices, which have nothing to do with Islaam, keep
occurring?
Blind following and Partisanship
This is one of the most evil of occurrences today and a major cause
for disunity. Muslims are following their madhahab or their scholars
over and above the Sunnah of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa
sallam) despite Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) saying:
"And whosoever opposesthe Messenger (Muhammad sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa
sallam) after the right path has been shown clearly to him, andfollows
other than the believers' way, We shall keep him in the path he has
chosen, and burn himin Hell - what an evil destination!" [Surah
an-Nisaa 4:115]
When you tell Muslims that 'you should do this because it says so in
the Qur'aan and the Sunnah',they reply 'well that's notwhat it says in
my madhab' or 'that's not what my Shaykh says'. SubhanAllaah, O noble
reader why did Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) send us His final
Messenger (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) if it was not to teach us
the religion of Islaam.
Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) says:
"But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O
Muhammad sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) judge in all disputes between
them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and
accept (them) with full submission." [Surah an-Nisaa 4:65]
No Muslim will openly sayI am disobeying the Prophet (sal-Allaahu
'alayhe wa sallam), but how many of us ask for the proof on issues of
beliefs and practices and look to see what is the truth.
Another problem is the setting up of groups and parties with members,
then being loyal only to that party, believing in the beliefs and aims
of that party - not questioning it. Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) has
warned against this:
"And be not of Al-Mushrikoon (polytheists). Of those who split their
religion, and became sects, each group rejoicing in that which is with
it." [Surah ar-Room 30:31-32]
Setting up groups is a cause for disunity and spreads hatred amongst
the Muslims so that a Muslim from one group will not give salaam to a
Muslim from another group just because they belong to different
groups. Or a group from one masjid will not like Muslims from another
masjid to come and pray in their mosque. All this stems from
partisanship and it divides the Ummah. Unity will not occur whilst
Muslims are in this state rather unity will occur when an end isput to
partisanship (hizbiyyah) and Muslims love each other because they are
all have the same aims, beliefs and practices.
The Means for Revival
Having looked at the reason why we are so divided, the question now
arises as to what themeans for reviving this Ummah are. Allaah
(subhaanahu wa ta'aala) has given us the means for the revival of this
Ummah, when He (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) says:
"Verily! Allaah will not change the condition of a people until they
change what is within themselves." [Surah ar-Ra'd 13:11]
The Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) also said:
"When you involve yourselves in interest bearing business
transactions, and you hold on to the tails of cows, and you are
pleased with agriculture (i.e. the land) and you abandon making Jihaad
in the Cause of Allaah, Allaah will send humiliation down upon you. He
will not remove itfrom you until you returnback to your Religion."
[Abu Dawood and al-Bayhaqee]
So this humiliation that Muslims are under will not be removed from us
until we return back to the religion of Islaam. So what is the
religion of Islaam if not Tawheed, having the correct Aqeedah,
worshipping Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) correctly? So should we not
start our revival with these issues.
So just as the condition of the Arabs during the Days of Ignorance
(Jaahiliyyah) was not rectified except by the coming of their Prophet
Muhammad (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) with revelation from the
heavens, which aided them in this world and which will save them in
the next, then know O noble reader the foundation that the Islaamic
revival must be built upon in this time, is nothing else but the
return to the Qur'aan andthe Sunnah, as implemented by the noble
companions.
We know from the Book of Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) and the Sunnah
of His Messenger (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) that the way towards
realising this revival is only one way, and it is the way which Allaah
(subhaanahu wa ta'aala) has mentioned inHis (subhaanahu wa ta'aala)
saying:
"And verily, this is My Straight Path, so follow it, and follow not
(other) paths, for they will separate you away from His Path." [Surah
al-An'aam 6:153]
The Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) explained this
to his Companions. Thus, one day he (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam)
drew a straight line for them on the ground and then drew short lines
on the sides of it. Then, while his(sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam)
noble finger moved up and down the straight line, he (sal-Allaahu
'alayhe wa sallam) recited the aforementioned verse. Then he
(sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) pointed to the lines that were drawn
on the sides of the straight line and said:
"This is the Path of Allaah and these are the (other) paths. At the
top of each of these (other) ways, there is a devil calling towards
it." [Authentic hadeeth, graded in Dhilaal-ul-Jannah fee Takhreej-is
Sunnah(16-17)]
Furthermore, Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) says:
"And whosoever opposesthe Messenger (Muhammad sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa
sallam) after the right path has been shown clearly to him, andfollows
other than the believers' way, We shall keep him in the path he has
chosen, and burn himin Hell - what an evil destination!" [Surah
an-Nisaa 4:115]
In this ayah there is profound and extensive wisdom, for Allaah
(subhaanahu wa ta'aala),has connected the "the believers' way" to what
the Messenger (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) came with. The Messenger
(sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) has (also) indicated this pointin the
hadeeth about the splitting up of the Ummah into sects. When he
(sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) was asked concerning the saved sect,
he (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) responded: "That which (adheres to
what) I and my companions are upontoday."
What then is the wisdom behind Allaah's mentioning of "the believers'
way" in this ayah? And what is the significance in the Messenger of
Allaah's (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) linking of his companions to
himself in the previous hadeeth?
The answer is: These noble Companions (radhi-Allaahu 'anhum) were the
ones who received the two revelations (i.e. the Qur'aan and Sunnah)
from the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), having
that explained to them by him (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam)
directly, without there being any intermediary. They best knew how to
implement the Sunnah, so after knowing this O noble reader can any
Islaamic revival take place when the way of the Companions
(radhi-Allaahu 'anhum) is abandoned and not adhered to, rather No it
can not. For us to revive Islaam and bring unity to the Muslims we
must adopt the way and example of the Noble Companions (radhi-Allaahu
'anhum).
Imaam Maalik (rahima-hullaah) said:
"The latter part of this Ummah will not be rectified except by that
which rectified its formerpart." [ash-Shifaa of Qaadee 'Iyyaadh,
(2/676)]
So it will be clear to the reader that the only way to revive the
Ummah is toreturn every affair of the Muslim back to the Qur'aan and
the Sunnah as understood and implemented by the best generation, the
Companions (radhi-Allaahu 'anhum). To believe as they believed, to
worship as they worshipped, to look like them, to give da'wah in the
way they gave it. Then only will we be united and have a true Islaamic
revival.
So dear noble brothers and sisters your Lord (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) says....
"Has not the time come for the hearts of those who believe to be
affected by Allaah's Reminder (this Qur'aan), and that which has been
revealed of the truth." [Surah al-Hadeed 57:16]
Free Hidayah
Bismillahir-Rahma-nir-Raheem
"The true believers are those who believe in Allah and His Messenger
and, afterward, doubt not, but strive with their wealth and their
lives for the cause of Allah. Such are the sincere."
We call ourselves believers--Muslims. Our parents are Muslims, our
grandparents are Muslims, our ancestorsembraced Islam, the adhan was
called out in our ears, we believe in Allah, but is that what really
makes us Muslims? The word"Islam" means to submit; submission to the
will of Allah, as the above ayah summarizes. A Muslim is one who
submits to Allah in His obedience. A true Muslim is one who submits
fully to Allah in obeying Him and striving for His pleasure in all
circumstances, situations, misfortunes, or good times during one's
journey through life. A Muslim is not one who has a Muslim name or one
who was born intoIslam or one who simple recited shahadah.
"It is not righteousnessto turn your faces to the east or the west,
but righteous is he who believes in Allah and the Last Day and the
angels and the books and the messengers; who spend of their wealth for
love of Him to the kinsfolk and the orphans and the needyand the
wayfarer and for those who ask and who free slaves; who observe proper
worship and pay the poor due (zakah/charity) and fulfill promises when
they make one and who are patient in times of tribulation and
adversity and times of stress. Such are the sincere. Such are the
God-fearing." (Suratul Baqarah 2:177)
We, who accepted Islam as our faith, havereceived free hidayah, free
iman, free belief, the right to follow our religion the way it
wasprescribed to us by Allah, without any interruptions or hindrances
by anyone or anything. We live in what they call a "free country."
Then why is it so hard for us to live by Islam? Why is it so hard for
us to worship Allah? Why is it so hardfor us to obey Him when we have
full knowledge of the Truth? Full knowledge of the consequences? The
truth is that Islam is not a hard religion, but we make it hard for
ourselves.
"Allah desires for you, ease. He desires not hardship for you."
(Suratul Baqarah 2:185)
The main aim of a Muslim is to attain Paradise. And we can only attain
Paradise byobeying the Creator, the Almighty, through the words of the
Holy Qur'an and the Sunnah of His final Messenger, Muhammad
(sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam). Without obedience to Allah and His
Messenger, without Allah's pleasure, we will be what Allah callslosers
on the Day of Judgement.
"Who make mischief on the earth: those are they who are the losers."
(Suratul Baqarah 2:27)
"Nay, but whosoever has done evil and his sins surround him, such are
rightful owners of the fire. They will abide therein." (Suratul
Baqarah 2:81)
We are coming to a very sad day, a day thatthe Prophet (sallallahu
alaiyhi wa sallam) warned us would come when the world would come to
an end. He said, "It will be the end of this world whenthere remains
not a single soul to hymn thename of Allah and it is only by the holy
name of Allah that the system of this universeis running." Though,
there are some devout Muslims, who spend every moment of their lives
in Allah's remembrance and worship and in striving for His pleasure,
there are more of us who have forgotten Allah, the Almighty,
All-Powerful.
Unlike a lot of Muslims,we have been given the freedom of religionin
this non-Muslim country. Canada, for example, is also a non-Muslim
country, but in that country Muslims don't have thefreedom that we
have here, in America. In Canada, Muslim girls get kicked out of
school for wearing hijab, a scarf on their head! Of course, that is
discrimination and it's also totally unfair. One piece of cloth, for
somereason, offends the Canadians. Another example is the country of
Turkey. Even though Turkey is known to be a Muslim country, it also
does not allow Muslim women to wear hijab. In America,though this is a
Satanist country, it is different. We see doctors in hijab and
managers praying in their officers and no non-Muslim can stop them.
Though this is quite unusual because most of us have forgotten our
main purpose of existence.
The Sahaba (radiyallahu anhu) endured such unimaginable hardships by
the non-Muslims just to follow Islam and live Islam and teach Islam,
but they never even had one thought of renouncing Islam so that they
could be freed of the physical torments, for they knew the torments of
Allah were far worse.
Every Muslim probably knows of one of the most closest companions of
the Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam), a black Abyssinian slave
called Bilal (radiyallahu anhu). He was the slave of Ummayah bin
Khalaf, the worst enemy of Islam. Therefore, Bilal'sconversion was
naturally not liked by Ummayah. This staunch enemy of Islam used to
make Bilal lie down on the burning sand of Makkah, one of the cities
of the hottest countries in the world, during midday. A massive rock
would beplaced on his chest andhe would be told by the enemies of
Allah:"Renounce Islam! Or swelter and die!" Even under these harsh
afflictions, Bilal endured the pain by saying, "Ahad! Ahad!" (i.e. The
One (Allah)! The One (Allah)!) Imagine that! This made the torturers
even more motivated and provoked to torture the servant of Allah. At
night, Bilal (radiyallahu anhu) would be whipped andwith the cuts thus
receive from the whipping, lying on the burning sand of Makkah was
even more painful, but his love and devotion to Allah was such that no
amount of pain could shake his faith. And, Alhumdulillah, he was
rewarded for his patience by receiving the blessing of, not only being
freed, but as being the first and only adhan caller for the Prophet
(sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam). He was to remain with the Prophet
(sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) at all times to call out the adhan.
Life is obviously not perfect. We will definitely stumble across times
of stress and panic, fear and disappointment, trials and hardships.
And these come in to our lives by the will of Allah to test our faith
and our devotion.
"We shall most certainly try you with fear and hunger and with the
loss of goods or lives or the fruits of your toil. But give (O
Muhammad) encouragement to those who patiently persevere." (Suratul
Baqarah 2:155)
Difficulties and hardships are not uncommon in this world to the
people of Allah. These are bound to come. The Prophet (sallallahu
alaiyhi wa sallam) said, "The worst trials in this world are reserved
for the Prophet (alaiyhimus-salam), then for those who are next to
them and then for those who are best of the rest." We must remember
that everything happens by the will of Allah, whether good or bad and
everything has a purpose, a reason, an aim, though we may not
understand it. We, as Allah's servants, must stay patient and firm in
our belief, our iman, and we must devote ourselves to Allah, so that
we may be successful.
"Who say when a misfortune strikes them: Lo! We are Allah's and lo!
Unto Him we are returning."(Suratul Baqarah 2:156)
"Or do you think you will enter the Garden without such trials as came
to those who passed away before you? They encounteredsuffering and
adversityand were so shaken in spirit that even the Messenger and
those who were with him cried: When will the help of Allah come?"
(Suratul Baqarah 2:214)
Our biggest trial is living in this country, a country filled with
arrogant, satanically-influenced non-Muslims. They strive to take the
believers off the path of Paradise and on to the path of Hell, which
is where they are headed.
"Hatred is revealed by the utterance of their mouths, but that
whichtheir breasts hide is greater. We have madeplain for you the
revelations, if you will understand." (Suratul Ali Imran 3:18)
"They utter with their mouths a thing which is not in their hearts.
Allah is Best Aware of what they hide." (Suratul Ali Imran 3:167)
But we keep supporting the disbelievers at the costof our own
religion, at the cost of our own souls! Allah's words are:
"Those who purchase disbelief at the price offaith, harm not Allah
atall, but their's will be a painful doom." (Suratul Ali Imran 3:177)
On the one hand, we must realize our mistakes and the fact that,
living in this country, we have falleninto the trap of Shaytaan, the
modern, un-Islamic world. We must make the effort to strengthen our
imanand we must make the effort to please Allah, not the kuffar. If we
displease Allah, whatever punishmentswe receive, either in this world
or the next, is exactly what we deserve. On the other hand, we must
realize that even though we are living in a non-Muslim country, there
is nothing to stop us from practicingIslam, the deen of Allah. We must
refrain from all things that areforbidden by Allah and undesirable in
His sight. Allah loves thosewho after committing sins, turns to Him in
repentance and amends, meaning, theydon't commit the samesins again.
We should remember our examples, the Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa
sallam) and his companions (radiyallahu anhu), on how to live our
lives astrue Muslims. And we have to realize that there is a God
watching over our every move, Who hearsour every thought, Who knows
ALL that we do, whether hiddenor open, intentional or unintentional,
sinful orrewardful. He is the Supreme Being and none is worthy of
worship except Him, the True, the Almighty, the Owner, as well as the
Creator of all that isin the heavens and all that is in the earth.
Allah gives us proof of His sovereignty through miraculous signs all
over the world. For example, in Germany, there is an area in which
brancheshave grown from the soil of the earth and these branches spell
out: 'There is no god, but Allah' in Arabic and, through it, many
Germans have embraced Islam, but we shouldn't need these signs to
persuade us to keep our duty to Allah, to obey Him, which is the only
way we will be successful in the next world, which is yet to come.
May Allah give us towfique to sacrifice our worldly desires for His
pleasure so that wemay be successful. May He include us among the
muttaqeen. May Heguide us and show us the Straight Path and may He
protect us fromthe evil influences of the jinn and mankind. May Allah
guard us from the fire prepared for the hypocrites and disbelievers.
Ameen. Alhumdulillahi Rabbil Alameen.

but they never even had one thought of renouncing Islam so that they
could be freed of the physical torments, for they knew the torments of
Allah were far worse.
Every Muslim probably knows of one of the most closest companions of
the Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam), a black Abyssinian slave
called Bilal (radiyallahu anhu). He was the slave of Ummayah bin
Khalaf, the worst enemy of Islam. Therefore, Bilal'sconversion was
naturally not liked by Ummayah. This staunch enemy of Islam used to
make Bilal lie down on the burning sand of Makkah, one of the cities
of the hottest countries in the world, during midday. A massive rock
would beplaced on his chest andhe would be told by the enemies of
Allah:"Renounce Islam! Or swelter and die!" Even under these harsh
afflictions, Bilal endured the pain by saying, "Ahad! Ahad!" (i.e. The
One (Allah)! The One (Allah)!) Imagine that! This made the torturers
even more motivated and provoked to torture the servant of Allah. At
night, Bilal (radiyallahu anhu) would be whipped andwith the cuts thus
receive from the whipping, lying on the burning sand of Makkah was
even more painful, but his love and devotion to Allah was such that no
amount of pain could shake his faith. And, Alhumdulillah, he was
rewarded for his patience by receiving the blessing of, not only being
freed, but as being the first and only adhan caller for the Prophet
(sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam). He was to remain with the Prophet
(sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) at all times to call out the adhan.
Life is obviously not perfect. We will definitely stumble across times
of stress and panic, fear and disappointment, trials and hardships.
And these come in to our lives by the will of Allah to test our faith
and our devotion.
"We shall most certainly try you with fear and hunger and with the
loss of goods or lives or the fruits of your toil. But give (O
Muhammad) encouragement to those who patiently persevere." (Suratul
Baqarah 2:155)
Difficulties and hardships are not uncommon in this world to the
people of Allah. These are bound to come. The Prophet (sallallahu
alaiyhi wa sallam) said, "The worst trials in this world are reserved
for the Prophet (alaiyhimus-salam), then for those who are next to
them and then for those who are best of the rest." We must remember
that everything happens by the will of Allah, whether good or bad and
everything has a purpose, a reason, an aim, though we may not
understand it. We, as Allah's servants, must stay patient and firm in
our belief, our iman, and we must devote ourselves to Allah, so that
we may be successful.
"Who say when a misfortune strikes them: Lo! We are Allah's and lo!
Unto Him we are returning."(Suratul Baqarah 2:156)
"Or do you think you will enter the Garden without such trials as came
to those who passed away before you? They encounteredsuffering and
adversityand were so shaken in spirit that even the Messenger and
those who were with him cried: When will the help of Allah come?"
(Suratul Baqarah 2:214)
Our biggest trial is living in this country, a country filled with
arrogant, satanically-influenced non-Muslims. They strive to take the
believers off the path of Paradise and on to the path of Hell, which
is where they are headed.
"Hatred is revealed by the utterance of their mouths, but that
whichtheir breasts hide is greater. We have madeplain for you the
revelations, if you will understand." (Suratul Ali Imran 3:18)
"They utter with their mouths a thing which is not in their hearts.
Allah is Best Aware of what they hide." (Suratul Ali Imran 3:167)
But we keep supporting the disbelievers at the costof our own
religion, at the cost of our own souls! Allah's words are:
"Those who purchase disbelief at the price offaith, harm not Allah
atall, but their's will be a painful doom." (Suratul Ali Imran 3:177)
On the one hand, we must realize our mistakes and the fact that,
living in this country, we have falleninto the trap of Shaytaan, the
modern, un-Islamic world. We must make the effort to strengthen our
imanand we must make the effort to please Allah, not the kuffar. If we
displease Allah, whatever punishmentswe receive, either in this world
or the next, is exactly what we deserve. On the other hand, we must
realize that even though we are living in a non-Muslim country, there
is nothing to stop us from practicingIslam, the deen of Allah. We must
refrain from all things that areforbidden by Allah and undesirable in
His sight. Allah loves thosewho after committing sins, turns to Him in
repentance and amends, meaning, theydon't commit the samesins again.
We should remember our examples, the Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa
sallam) and his companions (radiyallahu anhu), on how to live our
lives astrue Muslims. And we have to realize that there is a God
watching over our every move, Who hearsour every thought, Who knows
ALL that we do, whether hiddenor open, intentional or unintentional,
sinful orrewardful. He is the Supreme Being and none is worthy of
worship except Him, the True, the Almighty, the Owner, as well as the
Creator of all that isin the heavens and all that is in the earth.
Allah gives us proof of His sovereignty through miraculous signs all
over the world. For example, in Germany, there is an area in which
brancheshave grown from the soil of the earth and these branches spell
out: 'There is no god, but Allah' in Arabic and, through it, many
Germans have embraced Islam, but we shouldn't need these signs to
persuade us to keep our duty to Allah, to obey Him, which is the only
way we will be successful in the next world, which is yet to come.
May Allah give us towfique to sacrifice our worldly desires for His
pleasure so that wemay be successful. May He include us among the
muttaqeen. May Heguide us and show us the Straight Path and may He
protect us fromthe evil influences of the jinn and mankind. May Allah
guard us from the fire prepared for the hypocrites and disbelievers.

everything, also Islaam, my husband is always working, may Allaah
bless him for taking care of us.
But now for 3 years he do't wanna be intimate with me, only 2 times
maby and then I was pregnant.
Because of my 2 pregnancys I became weight and that's why hesaid and
he sheated on me , I forgave him, and we had after a much better
marriage but without intimacy, I always have to help him with oral sex
but I really need also intimacy, I allready lost a lot of weight , I
always makes myself beautiful for him, Iknow I'm beautiful, I do
everything for Allaah andfor him and for my children, he says there is
no better or beautiful wife than me, but he dont touch me, I tried
everything. He say that it is not me but he is tyred from job. My
feelings start also to become less, he had a long beard, now it is so
short, I always talk about Islaam with him, he say that he is so proud
of me. But he hurted me so much times trough are marriage, we also
still dont live together and it's killing me. It 's so long story,
ghair insha Allaah.
I want love and intimacy, i wanna feel beautiful and loved and ...He
is a good man, like he is sweet and calme and give me everythinh what
I need, but the most important I don't have with him
What must I do, and do you have an advice for him?

Firstly:
There is no doubt that what you mention is verydifficult for a young
woman. A woman may be able to do without herhusband spending on heror
providing her with accommodation, clothingor other material needs. She
may be able to do without all of that, by spending from her own wealth
or her family's wealth or whatever… Butshe has no way to maintain her
chastity andfulfil her physical desire except her husband, or by means
that Allah has forbidden – Allah forbid that she should think of that
or be tested in that way.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked
about a man who stayed away from his wife for a month or two months
and did not have intercourse with her; wasthere any sin on him or not?
Could the husband be asked to do that?
He replied:
The husband is obliged to have intercourse with his wife on a
reasonable basis, which is one of the most important rights that she
has over him; it is more important than feeding her. It was said that
what is obligatory with regard to intercourse is once every four
months, or according to her need and his ability, just as he should
feed her according to her need and his ability. And the latter is the
more correct opinion.
Majmoo' al-Fataawa, 32/271
Muslim narrated in his Saheeh (1006) from Abu Dharr (may Allah be
pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of
Allah be upon him) said: "…the intimacy of one of you (with his wife)
is a charity." They said: O Messenger of Allaah, if one of us fulfils
his desire, will he be rewarded for that? He said: "Do you not see
thatif he did it in a haraam manner, there would be a burden of sin on
him for that? Similarly, if he does it in a halaal manner, he will be
rewarded for it."
In that case, what the wise husband must do is take care of his wife
in that regard and give it priority over everything else, so that he
may keep her chaste, conceal her and meet her needs as much as he can,
even if he does not have an urgent need for that and even if he had to
do it only for her, for the sake of meeting his wife's needs. In that
there will be reward for both of them, in sha Allah, and a means of
help so that they attain spiritual and worldly wellbeing.
Secondly:
There is no doubt that what you mentioned about your husband's
situation and that havinggone on for a long time without him
satisfying your needs but doing his duty towards you, is something odd
and needs to be dealt with.
If the matter is as you say, that you have not fallen short in your
dutiestowards your husband ofadorning yourself for him, endearing
yourself to him and being prepared to meet your husband's needs, then
we think that you, along with your husband, should look at two things:
1. Make sure that there is no medical problem that is preventing
your husband from doing that,whether it is a psychological problem,
asoften happens, or a physical problem. We think that the possibility
of this is not very strong, because of what you mentioned about your
husband doing that with you, even if it is not frequent, and even his
falling into that which is haraam, even though he is married to you!
2. Make sure that you close all avenues to your husband fulfilling
his desire, except with his wife. It is natural that if your husband
has got used to other ways that are haraam, such as masturbation, or
immoralrelationships – Allah forbid – or ways that are permissible,
such as fulfilling his desire with his wife without having
intercourse, then it is natural that this will weaken his desire to
have intercourse with hiswife. If he has got used to these ways,
perhaps that means is that he is able to do without his wife
altogether, no matter how beautiful sheis or what she does for him.
In that case, we advise you to give up all ways that may lead to that.
What you mention about oral sex is one of the causes of the problem
and is not a solution to it.So fulfil your husband's needs in all
permissible ways and adorn yourself for him, and ensure that
fulfilling desires is done by means of
some shared action that will fulfil the rights of both parties and
allow each to fulfil the duties that Allah has enjoined towards the
other.
That also involves makingsure that your husband does not repeat the
haraam action that he admitted to you and that he has repented from
that action. Try to keep him away from that as much as possible, even
if that is by changing the environment and the place where you live,
if you are able to do that.
If you do that and make the effort, but your husband does not change,
and he continuesto fail to fulfil your rights and keep you chaste by
means of that which Allah has permitted, there is no doubt that
thesuffering in that case is something that carries weight in
sharee'ah. So ifyou cannot put up with your husband any more and you
fear that you may fall into haraam or think of it, then you can ask
for separation from your husband. Perhaps if he sees that the matter
is serious, he will mend his ways, and if he goes ahead and divorces
you, perhaps Allah will replacehim with someone who is better than him
and grant you someone who will keep you chaste. Allah, may He be
exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
"But if they separate (by divorce), Allah will provide abundance for
everyone of them from His Bounty. And Allah is Ever All-Sufficient for
His creatures need, All-Wise."
[an-Nisa' 4:130].
But as you know, this should be the last resort.

Causing harm to the wife by not having intercourse is grounds for
annulment in all cases, whether the husband did that intentionally or

The Woman's Status in Christianity & Islaam
The status of women in society is neither a new issue nor is it a
fully settled one.
The position of Islam on this issue has been among the subjects
presented to the Westernreader with the least objectivity.
This paper is intended to provide a brief and authentic exposition of
what Islam stands for in this regard. The teachings of Islam are based
essentially on the Qur'an (God's revelation) and Hadeeth (elaboration
by Prophet Muhammad).
The Qur'an and the Hadeeth, properly and unbiasedly understood,
provide the basic source of authentication for any position or view
which is attributed to Islam.
The paper starts with a brief survey of the status of women in the
pre-Islamic era. It then focuses on these major questions: What is the
position of Islam regarding the status of woman in society? How
similar or different is thatposition from "the spirit of the time,"
which was dominant when Islam was revealed? How would this compare
with the "rights" which were finally gained by woman in recent
decades?
2. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES
One major objective of this paper is to provide a fair evaluation of
what Islam contributed (or failed to contribute) toward the
restoration ofwoman's dignity and rights. In order to achieve this
objective, it may be useful to review briefly how women weretreated in
general in previous civilizations andreligions, especially thosewhich
preceded Islam (Pre-610 C.E.). Part of the information provided here,
however, describes the status of woman as late as the nineteenth
century, more than twelve centuries after Islam.
3. Women in Ancient Civilization
Describing the status of the Indian woman, Encyclopedia Britannica states:
In India, subjection was acardinal principle. Day and night must women
be held by their protectors in a state of dependence says Manu. The
rule of inheritance was agnatic, that is descent traced through males
to the exclusion of females.
In Hindu scriptures, the description of a good wife is as follows: "a
woman whose mind, speech and body are kept in subjection, acquires
high renown in this world, and, in the next, the same abode with her
husband."
In Athens, women were not better off than eitherthe Indian or the Roman women.
"Athenian women were always minors, subject to some male - to their
father, to their brother, or to some of their male kin.
Her consent in marriage was not generally thought to be necessary and
"she was obliged to submit to the wishes of her parents, and receive
from them her husband and her lord, even though he were stranger to
her."
A Roman wife was described by an historianas: "a babe, a minor, a
ward, a person incapableof doing or acting anything according to her
own individual taste, a person continually under the tutelage and
guardianship of her husband."
In the Encyclopedia Britannica, we find a summary of the legal status
of women in the Roman civilization:
In Roman Law a woman was even in historic times completely dependent.
If married she and her property passed into the power of her husband .
. . the wife was the purchased property of her husband, and like a
slave acquired only for his benefit. A woman could not exercise any
civil or public office . could not be a witness, surety, tutor, or
curator; she could not adopt or be adopted, or make will or contract.
Among the Scandinavian races women were:
under perpetual tutelage, whether married or unmarried. As late as the
Code of Christian V, at the end of the 17th Century, it was enacted
that if a woman married without the consent of her tutor he might
have, if he wished,administration and usufruct of her goods during her
life.
According to the English Common Law:
...all real property which a wife held at the time ofa marriage became
a possession of her husband. He was entitled to the rent from the land
and to any profit which might be made from operating the estate during
the joint life of the spouses. As time passed, the English
courtsdevised means to forbid a husband's transferring real property
without theconsent of his wife, but he still retained the right to
manage it and to receive the money which it produced. As to a
wife'spersonal property, the husband's power was complete. He had the
right to spend it as he saw fit.
Only by the late nineteenth Century did the situation start to
improve. "By a series of acts starting with the Married women's
Property Act in 1870, amended in 1882 and 1887, married women achieved
the right to own property and to enter contracts on a par with
spinsters, widows, and divorcees." As late as the Nineteenth Century
an authority in ancient law, Sir Henry Maine, wrote: "No society which
preserves any tincture of Christian institutions is likely to restore
to married women the personal liberty conferred on them by theMiddle
Roman Law."
In his essay The Subjection of Women, John Stuart Mill wrote:
We are continually told that civilization and Christianity have
restoredto the woman her just rights. Meanwhile the wife is the actual
bondservant of her husband; no less so, as far as the legal
obligationgoes, than slaves commonly so called.
Before moving on to the Qur'anic decrees concerning the status of
woman, a few Biblical decrees may shed more light on the subject, thus
providing a better basis for an impartial evaluation. In the Mosaic
Law, the wife was betrothed. Explaining this concept, the Encyclopedia
Biblica states: "To betroth a wife to oneself meant simply to acquire
possession of her by payment of the purchase money; the betrothed is a
girl for whom the purchase money has been paid." From the legal point
of view, the consent of the girl was not necessary forthe validation
of her marriage. "The girl's consent is unnecessary and the need for
it is nowhere suggested in the Law."
As to the right of divorce,we read in the Encyclopedia Biblica:"The
woman being man'sproperty, his right to divorce her follows as a
matter of course." The right to divorce was held only by man. "In the
Mosaic Law divorce was aprivilege of the husband only .... "
The position of the Christian Church until recent centuries seems
tohave been influenced by both the Mosaic Law and by the streams of
thought that were dominant in its contemporary cultures. Intheir book,
Marriage East and West, David and VeraMace wrote:
Let no one suppose, either, that our Christian heritage is free of
such slighting judgments. It would be hard to find anywhere a
collection of more degrading references to the female sex than the
early Church Fathers provide. Lecky, the famous historian, speaks of
(these fierce incentives which form so conspicuous and so grotesque a
portion of the writing of the Fathers. . . woman was represented as
the door of hell, as the mother of all human ills. She should be
ashamed at the very thought that she is a woman. She should live in
continual penance on account of the curses she has brought upon the
world. She should be ashamed of her dress, forit is the memorial of
her fall. She should be especially ashamed of her beauty, for it is
the most potent instrument of the devil). One of the most scathing of
these attacks on woman is that of Tertullian: Do you know that you are
each an Eve? The sentence of God on this sex of yours lives in this
age: the guilt must of necessity live too.You are the devil's gateway:
you are the unsealer of that forbidden tree; you are the first
deserters of the divine law; you are she who persuades him whom the
devil was not valiant enough to attack. You destroyed so easily God's
image, man. On account of your desert - that is death - even the Sop
of God had to die). Not only did the church affirm the inferior status
of woman, it deprived her of legal rights she had previously enjoyed.
4. WOMAN IN ISLAM
In the midst of the darkness that engulfed the world, the divine
revelation echoed in the wide desert of Arabia with a fresh, noble,
and universal message to humanity: "O Mankind, keep your duty to your
Lord who created you from a single soul and from it created its mate
(of same kind) and from them twain has spread a multitude of men and
women" (Qur'an 4: 1).
A scholar who pondered about this verse states: "Itis believed that
there is no text, old or new, that deals with the humanity of the
woman from all aspects with such amazing brevity, eloquence, depth,
and originality as this divine decree."
Stressing this noble and natural conception, themQur'an states:
He (God) it is who did create you from a single soul and therefrom did
create his mate, that he might dwell with her (in love)...(Qur'an
7:189)
The Creator of heavens and earth: He has made for you pairs from
amongyourselves ...Qur'an 42:1 1
And Allah has given you mates of your own nature, and has given you
from your mates, children and grandchildren, and has made provision of
good things for you. Is it then in vanity that they believe and in the
grace of God that they disbelieve? Qur'an 16:72
The rest of this paper outlines the position of Islam regarding the
status of woman in society from its various aspects - spiritually,
socially, economically and politically.
The Spiritual Aspect
The Qur'an provides clear-cut evidence that woman iscompletely equated
with man in the sight of God interms of her rights and
responsibilities. The Qur'an states:
"Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds" (Qur'an 74:38). It
also states:
...So their Lord accepted their prayers, (saying): I will not suffer
to be lost the work of any of you whether male or female. You proceed
one from another ...(Qur'an 3: 195).
Whoever works righteousness, man or woman, and has faith, verily to
him will We givea new life that is good and pure, and We will bestow
on such their reward according to the their actions. (Qur'an 16:97,
see also 4:124).
Woman according to the Qur'an is not blamed for Adam's first mistake.
Bothwere jointly wrong in their disobedience to God, both repented,
and both were forgiven. (Qur'an 2:36, 7:20 - 24). Inone verse in fact
(20:121),Adam specifically, was blamed.
In terms of religious obligations, such as the Daily Prayers, Fasting,
Poor-due, and Pilgrimage, woman is no different from man. In some
cases indeed, woman has certain advantages over man. For example, the
woman is exempted from the daily prayers and from fasting during her
menstrual periods and forty days after childbirth. She is also
exempted from fasting during her pregnancy and when she is nursing her
baby if there is any threat to her health or her baby's. If the missed
fasting is obligatory (during the month of Ramadan), she can make up
for the missed days whenever she can. She does not have to make up for
the prayers missedfor any of the above reasons. Although women can and
did go into the mosque during the days of the prophet and thereafter
attendance et the Friday congregational prayers isoptional for them
while it is mandatory for men (on Friday).
This is clearly a tender touch of the Islamic teachings for they are
considerate of the fact that a woman may be nursing her baby or caring
for him, and thus may be unable to go out to the mosque at the time of
the prayers. They also take into account the physiological and
psychological changes associated with her natural female functions.
The Social Aspect
a) As a child and an adolescent
Despite the social acceptance of female infanticide among some Arabian
tribes, the Qur'anforbade this custom, and considered it a crime like
any other murder.
"And when the female (infant) buried alive - is questioned, for what
crime she was killed." (Qur'an 81:8-9).
Criticizing the attitudes of such parents who reject their female
children, the Qur'an states:
When news is brought to one of them, of (the Birthof) a female
(child), his face darkens and he is filled with inward grief! With
shame does he hide himself from his people because of the bad news he
has had! Shall he retain her on (sufferance) and contempt, or bury her
in the dust? Ah! What an evil (choice) they decide on? (Qur'an 16:
58-59).
Far from saving the girl's life so that she may later suffer injustice
and inequality, Islam requireskind and just treatment for her. Among
the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (P.) in this regard are the following:
Whosoever has a daughter and he does not bury her alive, does not
insult her, and does not favor his son over her, God will enter him
into Paradise. (Ibn Hanbal, No. 1957).
Whosoever supports two daughters till they mature, he and I will come
in the day of judgment as this (and he pointed with his two fingers
held together).
A similar Hadeeth deals inlike manner with one who supports two
sisters.(Ibn-Hanbal, No. 2104).
The right of females to seek knowledge is not different from that of
males. Prophet Muhammad (P.) said:
"Seeking knowledge is mandatory for every Muslim". (AlBayhaqi). Muslim
as used here including both males andfemales.
b) As a wife:
The Qur'an clearly indicates that marriage issharing between the
twohalves of the society, and that its objectives, besideperpetuating
human life, are emotional well-beingand spiritual harmony. Itsbases
are love and mercy.
Among the most impressive verses in the Qur'an about marriage is the following.
"And among His signs is this: That He created mates for you from
yourselves that you may find rest, peace of mind in them, and He
ordainedbetween you love and mercy. Lo, herein indeed are signs for
people who reflect." (Qur'an 30:2 1).
According to Islamic Law, women cannot be forced to marry anyone
without their consent.
Ibn Abbas reported that agirl came to the Messenger of God, Muhammad
(P.), and she reported that her father had forced her to marry without
her consent. The Messenger of God gave her the choice . . . (between
accepting the marriage or invalidating it). (Ibn Hanbal No. 2469).In
another version, the girl said: "Actually I accept this marriage but
Iwanted to let women know that parents have no right (to force a
husband on them)" (Ibn Maja, No. 1873).
Besides all other provisions for her protection at the time of
marriage, it was specifically decreed that woman has the full right to
her Mahr, a marriage gift, which is presented to her by her husband
and is included in the nuptial contract, and thatsuch ownership does
not transfer to her father or husband. The concept of Mahr in Islam is
neither an actual or symbolic price for the woman, as was the case in
certain cultures, but rather it is a gift symbolizing love and
affection.
The rules for married life in Islam are clear and in harmony with
upright human nature. In consideration of the physiological and
psychological make-up ofman and woman, both have equal rights and
claims on one another, except for one responsibility, that of
leadership. This is a matter which is natural in any collective life
and which is consistent with the nature of man.
The Qur'an thus states:
"And they (women) have rights similar to those (of men) over them, and
men are a degree above them." (Qur'an 2:228).
Such degree is Quiwama (maintenance and protection). This refers
tothat natural difference between the sexes whichentitles the weaker
sex toprotection. It implies no superiority or advantage before the
law. Yet, man's role of leadership in relation to his family does not
mean the husband's dictatorship over his wife. Islam emphasizes the
importance of taking counsel and mutual agreement in family decisions.
The Qur'an gives us an example:
"...If they (husband wife) desire to wean the child by mutual consent
and (after) consultation, there is no blame on them..." (Qur'an 2:
233).
Over and above her basic rights as a wife comes the right which is
emphasized by the Qur'an and is strongly recommended by the Prophet
(P); kind treatment and companionship.
The Qur'an states:
"...But consort with them in kindness, for if you hate them it may
happen that you hate a thing wherein God has placed much good."
(Qur'an 4: l9).
Prophet Muhammad. (P) said:
The best of you is the best to his family and I am the best among you
to my family.
The most perfect believers are the best in conduct and best of you are
those who are best totheir wives. (Ibn-Hanbal, No. 7396)
Behold, many women came to Muhammad's wives complaining against their
husbands (because they beat them)- - those (husbands) are not the best
of you.
As the woman's right to decide about her marriage is recognized, so
also her right to seek an end for an unsuccessful marriage is
recognized. To provide for the stability of the family, however, and
in order to protect it from hasty decisions under temporary emotional
stress, certain steps and waiting periods should be observed by men
and women seeking divorce. Considering the relativelymore emotional
nature of women, a good reasonfor asking for divorce should be brought
before the judge. Like the man, however, the woman can divorce her
husband with out resorting to the court, if the nuptial contract
allows that.
More specifically, some aspects of Islamic Law concerning marriage
anddivorce are interesting and are worthy of separate treatment.
When the continuation of the marriage relationship is impossiblefor
any reason, men are still taught to seek a gracious end for it.
The Qur'an states about such cases:
When you divorce women, and they reach their prescribed term, then
retain them in kindness and retain themnot for injury so that you
transgress (the limits). (Qur'an 2:231). (See also Qur'an 2:229 and
33:49).
c) As a mother:
Islam considered kindness to parents next to the worship of God.
"And we have enjoined upon man (to be good) to his parents: His
motherbears him in weakness upon weakness..." (Qur'an 31:14) (See also
Qur'an 46:15, 29:8).
Moreover, the Qur'an has a special recommendation for the good
treatment of mothers:
"Your Lord has decreed that you worship none save Him, and that you
bekind to your parents. . ." (Qur'an 17:23).
A man came to Prophet Muhammad (P) asking:
O Messenger of God, who among the people is the most worthy of my good
company? The Prophet (P) said, Your mother. Theman said then who else:
The Prophet (P) said, Your mother. The man asked, Then who else? Only
then did the Prophet(P) say, Your father. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).
A famous saying of The Prophet is "Paradise is at the feet of
mothers." (In Al'Nisa'I, Ibn Majah, Ahmad).
"It is the generous (in character) who is good to women, and it is the
wicked who insults them."
3. The Economic Aspect
Islam decreed a right of which woman was deprived both before Islam
and after it (even aslate as this century), the right of independent
ownership. According to Islamic Law, woman's right to her money, real
estate, or other properties is fully acknowledged. This rightundergoes
no change whether she is single or married. She retains her full
rights to buy, sell, mortgage or lease any or all her properties. It
is nowhere suggested in the Law that a woman is a minor simply because
she is a female. It is also noteworthy that such right applies to her
properties before marriage as well as to whatever she acquires
thereafter.
With regard to the woman's right to seek employment it should be
stated first that Islam regards her role in society as a mother and
awife as the most sacred and essential one. Neither maids nor
baby-sitters can possibly take the mother's place as the educator of
an upright, complex free, and carefully-reared children. Such a noble
and vital role, which largely shapes the future of nations, cannot be
regarded as "idleness".
However, there is no decree in Islam which forbids woman from seeking
employment whenever there is a necessity for it, especiallyin
positions which fit her nature and in which society needs her most.
Examples of these professions are nursing, teaching (especially for
children), and medicine. Moreover, there is no restriction on
benefiting from woman's exceptional talent in any field. Even for the
position of a judge, where there may be a tendency to doubt the
woman's fitness for the post due to her more emotional nature, we find
early Muslim scholarssuch as Abu-Hanifa and Al-Tabary holding there
isnothing wrong with it. Inaddition, Islam restored to woman the right
of inheritance, after she herself was an object of inheritance in some
cultures. Her share is completely hers and no one can make any claim
on it, including her father and her husband.
"Unto men (of the family)belongs a share of that which Parents and
near kindred leave, and unto women a share of that which parents and
near kindred leave, whether itbe a little or much - a determinate
share." ((Qur'an 4:7).
Her share in most cases is one-half the man's share,with no
implication that she is worth half a man! It would seem grossly
inconsistent after the overwhelming evidence of woman's equitable
treatment in Islam, whichwas discussed in the preceding pages, to make
such an inference. This variation in inheritance rights is only
consistent with the variations in financial responsibilities of man
and woman according to the Islamic Law. Man in Islam is fully
responsible for the maintenance of his wife, his children, andin some
cases of his needy relatives, especially the females. This
responsibility is neither waived nor reduced because of his wife's
wealth or because of her access to any personal income gained from
work, rent, profit, or any other legal means.
Woman, on the other hand, is far more secure financially and is far
less burdened with any claims on her possessions. Her possessions
before marriage do not transfer to her husband and she even keeps her
maiden name. She has no obligation to spend on her family out of such
properties or out of her income after marriage. She is entitled to
the"Mahr" which she takes from her husband at the time of marriage. If
she isdivorced, she may get an alimony from her ex-husband.
An examination of the inheritance law within the overall framework of
the Islamic Law reveals not only justice but also an abundance of
compassion for woman.
4. The Political Aspect
Any fair investigation of the teachings of Islam o~ into the history
of the Islamic civilization will surely find a clear evidence of
woman's equality with man in what we call today"political rights".
This includes the right of election as well as the nomination to
political offices. It also includes woman's right to participate in
public affairs. Both in the Qur'anand in Islamic history we find
examples of women who participated in serious discussions and argued
even with the Prophet (P) himself, (see Qur'an 58: 14 and 60: 10-12).
During the Caliphate of Omar Ibn al-Khattab, a woman argued with him
in the mosque, proved her point, and caused him to declare in the
presence of people: "A woman is right and Omaris wrong."
Although not mentioned in the Qur'an, one Hadeeth of the Prophet
isinterpreted to make woman ineligible for the position of head of
state. The Hadeeth referred to is roughly translated: "A people will
not prosper ifthey let a woman be their leader." This limitation,
however, has nothing to do with the dignity of woman or with her
rights. It is rather, related to the natural differences in
thebiological and psychological make-up ofmen and women.
According to Islam, the head of the state is no mere figurehead. He
leads people in the prayers, especially on Fridays and festivities; he
is continuously engaged in the process of decision-making pertaining
to the securityand well-being of his people. This demanding position,
or any similar one, such as the Commander of the Army, is generally
inconsistent with the physiological and psychological make-up of woman
in general. It is a medical fact that during their monthly periods and
during their pregnancies,women undergo various physiological and
psychological changes. Such changes may occur during an emergency
situation, thus affecting her decision, without considering the
excessivestrain which is produced.Moreover, some decisionsrequire a
maximum of rationality and a minimum of emotionality- a requirement
which does not coincide with the instinctive nature of women.
Even in modern times, and in the most developed countries, it is rare
to find a woman in the position of a head of state acting as more
thana figurehead, a woman commander of the armedservices, or even a
proportionate number ofwomen representatives in parliaments, or
similar bodies. One can not possibly ascribe this to backwardness of
various nations or to any constitutional limitation on woman's right
to be in such a position as a head of state or as a member of the
parliament. It is more logical to explain the present situation in
termsof the natural and indisputable differences between man and
woman, a difference which does not imply any"supremacy" of one over
the other. The difference implies rather the"complementary" roles
ofboth the sexes in life.
IV. CONCLUSION
The first part of this paper deals briefly with the position of
various religions and cultures on the issue under investigation. Part
of this exposition extends to cover the general trend as late as the
nineteenth century, nearly 1300 years after the Qur'an set forth the
Islamic teachings.
In the second part of the paper, the status of women in Islam is
briefly discussed. Emphasis in this part is placed on the original and
authentic sources of Islam. This represents the standard according to
which degree of adherence of Muslims can be judged. It is also a fact
that during the downward cycle of Islamic Civilization, such teachings
were not strictly adhered to by many people who profess to be Muslims.
Such deviations were unfairly exaggerated by some writers, and the
worst of this, were superficially taken to represent the teachings of
"Islam" to the Western reader without taking the trouble to make any
original and unbiased study of the authentic sources of these
teachings.
Even with such deviations three facts areworth mentioning:
1. The history of Muslims is rich with women of great achievements in
all walks of life from as earlyas the seventh century (B.C.)
2. It is impossible for anyone to justify any mistreatment of woman by
any decree of rule embodied in the Islamic Law, nor could anyone dare
to cancel, reduce, ordistort the clear-cut legal rights of women given
inIslamic Law.
3. Throughout history, the reputation, chastity and maternal role of
Muslim women were objects of admiration by impartial observers.
It is also worthwhile to state that the status which women reached
during the present era was not achieved due to the kindness of men or
due to natural progress. It was rather achieved through a long
struggle and sacrifice on woman'spart and only when society needed her
contribution and work, more especial!; during the two world wars, and
due to the escalation of technological change.
In the case of Islam such compassionate and dignified status was
decreed, not because it reflects the environment of the seventh
century, nor under the threat or pressure of women and their
organizations, but rather because of its intrinsic truthfulness.
If this indicates anything,it would demonstrate thedivine origin of
the Qur'an and the truthfulness of the message of Islam, which, unlike
human philosophies and ideologies, was far from proceeding from its
human environment, a message which established such humane principles
as neither grew obsolete during thecourse of time and after these many
centuries, nor can become obsolete in the future. After all, this is
the message of the All-Wise and all-knowing God whose wisdom and
knowledge are far beyond the ultimate in human thought and progress.

. . the wife was the purchased property of her husband, and like a
slave acquired only for his benefit. A woman could not exercise any
civil or public office . could not be a witness, surety, tutor, or
curator; she could not adopt or be adopted, or make will or contract.
Among the Scandinavian races women were:
under perpetual tutelage, whether married or unmarried. As late as the
Code of Christian V, at the end of the 17th Century, it was enacted
that if a woman married without the consent of her tutor he might
have, if he wished,administration and usufruct of her goods during her
life.
According to the English Common Law:
...all real property which a wife held at the time ofa marriage became
a possession of her husband. He was entitled to the rent from the land
and to any profit which might be made from operating the estate during
the joint life of the spouses. As time passed, the English
courtsdevised means to forbid a husband's transferring real property
without theconsent of his wife, but he still retained the right to
manage it and to receive the money which it produced. As to a
wife'spersonal property, the husband's power was complete. He had the
right to spend it as he saw fit.
Only by the late nineteenth Century did the situation start to
improve. "By a series of acts starting with the Married women's
Property Act in 1870, amended in 1882 and 1887, married women achieved
the right to own property and to enter contracts on a par with
spinsters, widows, and divorcees." As late as the Nineteenth Century
an authority in ancient law, Sir Henry Maine, wrote: "No society which
preserves any tincture of Christian institutions is likely to restore
to married women the personal liberty conferred on them by theMiddle
Roman Law."
In his essay The Subjection of Women, John Stuart Mill wrote:
We are continually told that civilization and Christianity have
restoredto the woman her just rights. Meanwhile the wife is the actual
bondservant of her husband; no less so, as far as the legal
obligationgoes, than slaves commonly so called.
Before moving on to the Qur'anic decrees concerning the status of
woman, a few Biblical decrees may shed more light on the subject, thus
providing a better basis for an impartial evaluation. In the Mosaic
Law, the wife was betrothed. Explaining this concept, the Encyclopedia
Biblica states: "To betroth a wife to oneself meant simply to acquire
possession of her by payment of the purchase money; the betrothed is a
girl for whom the purchase money has been paid." From the legal point
of view, the consent of the girl was not necessary forthe validation
of her marriage. "The girl's consent is unnecessary and the need for
it is nowhere suggested in the Law."
As to the right of divorce,we read in the Encyclopedia Biblica:"The
woman being man'sproperty, his right to divorce her follows as a
matter of course." The right to divorce was held only by man. "In the
Mosaic Law divorce was aprivilege of the husband only .... "
The position of the Christian Church until recent centuries seems
tohave been influenced by both the Mosaic Law and by the streams of
thought that were dominant in its contemporary cultures. Intheir book,
Marriage East and West, David and VeraMace wrote:
Let no one suppose, either, that our Christian heritage is free of
such slighting judgments. It would be hard to find anywhere a
collection of more degrading references to the female sex than the
early Church Fathers provide. Lecky, the famous historian, speaks of
(these fierce incentives which form so conspicuous and so grotesque a
portion of the writing of the Fathers. . . woman was represented as
the door of hell, as the mother of all human ills. She should be
ashamed at the very thought that she is a woman. She should live in
continual penance on account of the curses she has brought upon the
world. She should be ashamed of her dress, forit is the memorial of
her fall. She should be especially ashamed of her beauty, for it is
the most potent instrument of the devil). One of the most scathing of
these attacks on woman is that of Tertullian: Do you know that you are
each an Eve? The sentence of God on this sex of yours lives in this
age: the guilt must of necessity live too.You are the devil's gateway:
you are the unsealer of that forbidden tree; you are the first
deserters of the divine law; you are she who persuades him whom the
devil was not valiant enough to attack. You destroyed so easily God's
image, man. On account of your desert - that is death - even the Sop
of God had to die). Not only did the church affirm the inferior status
of woman, it deprived her of legal rights she had previously enjoyed.
4. WOMAN IN ISLAM
In the midst of the darkness that engulfed the world, the divine
revelation echoed in the wide desert of Arabia with a fresh, noble,
and universal message to humanity: "O Mankind, keep your duty to your
Lord who created you from a single soul and from it created its mate
(of same kind) and from them twain has spread a multitude of men and
women" (Qur'an 4: 1).
A scholar who pondered about this verse states: "Itis believed that
there is no text, old or new, that deals with the humanity of the
woman from all aspects with such amazing brevity, eloquence, depth,
and originality as this divine decree."
Stressing this noble and natural conception, themQur'an states:
He (God) it is who did create you from a single soul and therefrom did
create his mate, that he might dwell with her (in love)...(Qur'an
7:189)
The Creator of heavens and earth: He has made for you pairs from
amongyourselves ...Qur'an 42:1 1
And Allah has given you mates of your own nature, and has given you
from your mates, children and grandchildren, and has made provision of
good things for you. Is it then in vanity that they believe and in the
grace of God that they disbelieve? Qur'an 16:72
The rest of this paper outlines the position of Islam regarding the
status of woman in society from its various aspects - spiritually,
socially, economically and politically.
The Spiritual Aspect
The Qur'an provides clear-cut evidence that woman iscompletely equated
with man in the sight of God interms of her rights and
responsibilities. The Qur'an states:
"Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds" (Qur'an 74:38). It
also states:
...So their Lord accepted their prayers, (saying): I will not suffer
to be lost the work of any of you whether male or female. You proceed
one from another ...(Qur'an 3: 195).
Whoever works righteousness, man or woman, and has faith, verily to
him will We givea new life that is good and pure, and We will bestow
on such their reward according to the their actions. (Qur'an 16:97,
see also 4:124).
Woman according to the Qur'an is not blamed for Adam's first mistake.
Bothwere jointly wrong in their disobedience to God, both repented,
and both were forgiven. (Qur'an 2:36, 7:20 - 24). Inone verse in fact
(20:121),Adam specifically, was blamed.
In terms of religious obligations, such as the Daily Prayers, Fasting,
Poor-due, and Pilgrimage, woman is no different from man. In some
cases indeed, woman has certain advantages over man. For example, the
woman is exempted from the daily prayers and from fasting during her
menstrual periods and forty days after childbirth. She is also
exempted from fasting during her pregnancy and when she is nursing her
baby if there is any threat to her health or her baby's. If the missed
fasting is obligatory (during the month of Ramadan), she can make up
for the missed days whenever she can. She does not have to make up for
the prayers missedfor any of the above reasons. Although women can and
did go into the mosque during the days of the prophet and thereafter
attendance et the Friday congregational prayers isoptional for them
while it is mandatory for men (on Friday).
This is clearly a tender touch of the Islamic teachings for they are
considerate of the fact that a woman may be nursing her baby or caring
for him, and thus may be unable to go out to the mosque at the time of
the prayers. They also take into account the physiological and
psychological changes associated with her natural female functions.
The Social Aspect
a) As a child and an adolescent
Despite the social acceptance of female infanticide among some Arabian
tribes, the Qur'anforbade this custom, and considered it a crime like
any other murder.
"And when the female (infant) buried alive - is questioned, for what
crime she was killed." (Qur'an 81:8-9).
Criticizing the attitudes of such parents who reject their female
children, the Qur'an states:
When news is brought to one of them, of (the Birthof) a female
(child), his face darkens and he is filled with inward grief! With
shame does he hide himself from his people because of the bad news he
has had! Shall he retain her on (sufferance) and contempt, or bury her
in the dust? Ah! What an evil (choice) they decide on? (Qur'an 16:
58-59).
Far from saving the girl's life so that she may later suffer injustice
and inequality, Islam requireskind and just treatment for her. Among
the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (P.) in this regard are the following:
Whosoever has a daughter and he does not bury her alive, does not
insult her, and does not favor his son over her, God will enter him
into Paradise. (Ibn Hanbal, No. 1957).
Whosoever supports two daughters till they mature, he and I will come
in the day of judgment as this (and he pointed with his two fingers
held together).
A similar Hadeeth deals inlike manner with one who supports two
sisters.(Ibn-Hanbal, No. 2104).
The right of females to seek knowledge is not different from that of
males. Prophet Muhammad (P.) said:
"Seeking knowledge is mandatory for every Muslim". (AlBayhaqi). Muslim
as used here including both males andfemales.
b) As a wife:
The Qur'an clearly indicates that marriage issharing between the
twohalves of the society, and that its objectives, besideperpetuating
human life, are emotional well-beingand spiritual harmony. Itsbases
are love and mercy.
Among the most impressive verses in the Qur'an about marriage is the following.
"And among His signs is this: That He created mates for you from
yourselves that you may find rest, peace of mind in them, and He
ordainedbetween you love and mercy. Lo, herein indeed are signs for
people who reflect." (Qur'an 30:2 1).
According to Islamic Law, women cannot be forced to marry anyone
without their consent.
Ibn Abbas reported that agirl came to the Messenger of God, Muhammad
(P.), and she reported that her father had forced her to marry without
her consent. The Messenger of God gave her the choice . . . (between
accepting the marriage or invalidating it). (Ibn Hanbal No. 2469).In
another version, the girl said: "Actually I accept this marriage but
Iwanted to let women know that parents have no right (to force a
husband on them)" (Ibn Maja, No. 1873).
Besides all other provisions for her protection at the time of
marriage, it was specifically decreed that woman has the full right to
her Mahr, a marriage gift, which is presented to her by her husband
and is included in the nuptial contract, and thatsuch ownership does
not transfer to her father or husband. The concept of Mahr in Islam is
neither an actual or symbolic price for the woman, as was the case in
certain cultures, but rather it is a gift symbolizing love and
affection.
The rules for married life in Islam are clear and in harmony with
upright human nature. In consideration of the physiological and
psychological make-up ofman and woman, both have equal rights and
claims on one another, except for one responsibility, that of
leadership. This is a matter which is natural in any collective life
and which is consistent with the nature of man.
The Qur'an thus states:
"And they (women) have rights similar to those (of men) over them, and
men are a degree above them." (Qur'an 2:228).
Such degree is Quiwama (maintenance and protection). This refers
tothat natural difference between the sexes whichentitles the weaker
sex toprotection. It implies no superiority or advantage before the
law. Yet, man's role of leadership in relation to his family does not
mean the husband's dictatorship over his wife. Islam emphasizes the
importance of taking counsel and mutual agreement in family decisions.
The Qur'an gives us an example:
"...If they (husband wife) desire to wean the child by mutual consent
and (after) consultation, there is no blame on them..." (Qur'an 2:
233).
Over and above her basic rights as a wife comes the right which is
emphasized by the Qur'an and is strongly recommended by the Prophet
(P); kind treatment and companionship.
The Qur'an states:
"...But consort with them in kindness, for if you hate them it may
happen that you hate a thing wherein God has placed much good."
(Qur'an 4: l9).
Prophet Muhammad. (P) said:
The best of you is the best to his family and I am the best among you
to my family.
The most perfect believers are the best in conduct and best of you are
those who are best totheir wives. (Ibn-Hanbal, No. 7396)
Behold, many women came to Muhammad's wives complaining against their
husbands (because they beat them)- - those (husbands) are not the best
of you.
As the woman's right to decide about her marriage is recognized, so
also her right to seek an end for an unsuccessful marriage is
recognized. To provide for the stability of the family, however, and
in order to protect it from hasty decisions under temporary emotional
stress, certain steps and waiting periods should be observed by men
and women seeking divorce. Considering the relativelymore emotional
nature of women, a good reasonfor asking for divorce should be brought
before the judge. Like the man, however, the woman can divorce her
husband with out resorting to the court, if the nuptial contract
allows that.
More specifically, some aspects of Islamic Law concerning marriage
anddivorce are interesting and are worthy of separate treatment.
When the continuation of the marriage relationship is impossiblefor
any reason, men are still taught to seek a gracious end for it.
The Qur'an states about such cases:
When you divorce women, and they reach their prescribed term, then
retain them in kindness and retain themnot for injury so that you
transgress (the limits). (Qur'an 2:231). (See also Qur'an 2:229 and
33:49).
c) As a mother:
Islam considered kindness to parents next to the worship of God.
"And we have enjoined upon man (to be good) to his parents: His
motherbears him in weakness upon weakness..." (Qur'an 31:14) (See also
Qur'an 46:15, 29:8).
Moreover, the Qur'an has a special recommendation for the good
treatment of mothers:
"Your Lord has decreed that you worship none save Him, and that you
bekind to your parents. . ." (Qur'an 17:23).
A man came to Prophet Muhammad (P) asking:
O Messenger of God, who among the people is the most worthy of my good
company? The Prophet (P) said, Your mother. Theman said then who else:
The Prophet (P) said, Your mother. The man asked, Then who else? Only
then did the Prophet(P) say, Your father. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).
A famous saying of The Prophet is "Paradise is at the feet of
mothers." (In Al'Nisa'I, Ibn Majah, Ahmad).
"It is the generous (in character) who is good to women, and it is the
wicked who insults them."
3. The Economic Aspect
Islam decreed a right of which woman was deprived both before Islam
and after it (even aslate as this century), the right of independent
ownership. According to Islamic Law, woman's right to her money, real
estate, or other properties is fully acknowledged. This rightundergoes
no change whether she is single or married. She retains her full
rights to buy, sell, mortgage or lease any or all her properties. It
is nowhere suggested in the Law that a woman is a minor simply because
she is a female. It is also noteworthy that such right applies to her
properties before marriage as well as to whatever she acquires
thereafter.
With regard to the woman's right to seek employment it should be
stated first that Islam regards her role in society as a mother and
awife as the most sacred and essential one. Neither maids nor
baby-sitters can possibly take the mother's place as the educator of
an upright, complex free, and carefully-reared children. Such a noble
and vital role, which largely shapes the future of nations, cannot be
regarded as "idleness".
However, there is no decree in Islam which forbids woman from seeking
employment whenever there is a necessity for it, especiallyin
positions which fit her nature and in which society needs her most.
Examples of these professions are nursing, teaching (especially for
children), and medicine. Moreover, there is no restriction on
benefiting from woman's exceptional talent in any field. Even for the
position of a judge, where there may be a tendency to doubt the
woman's fitness for the post due to her more emotional nature, we find
early Muslim scholarssuch as Abu-Hanifa and Al-Tabary holding there
isnothing wrong with it. Inaddition, Islam restored to woman the right
of inheritance, after she herself was an object of inheritance in some
cultures. Her share is completely hers and no one can make any claim
on it, including her father and her husband.
"Unto men (of the family)belongs a share of that which Parents and
near kindred leave, and unto women a share of that which parents and
near kindred leave, whether itbe a little or much - a determinate
share." ((Qur'an 4:7).
Her share in most cases is one-half the man's share,with no
implication that she is worth half a man! It would seem grossly
inconsistent after the overwhelming evidence of woman's equitable
treatment in Islam, whichwas discussed in the preceding pages, to make
such an inference. This variation in inheritance rights is only
consistent with the variations in financial responsibilities of man
and woman according to the Islamic Law. Man in Islam is fully
responsible for the maintenance of his wife, his children, andin some
cases of his needy relatives, especially the females. This
responsibility is neither waived nor reduced because of his wife's
wealth or because of her access to any personal income gained from
work, rent, profit, or any other legal means.
Woman, on the other hand, is far more secure financially and is far
less burdened with any claims on her possessions. Her possessions
before marriage do not transfer to her husband and she even keeps her
maiden name. She has no obligation to spend on her family out of such
properties or out of her income after marriage. She is entitled to
the"Mahr" which she takes from her husband at the time of marriage. If
she isdivorced, she may get an alimony from her ex-husband.
An examination of the inheritance law within the overall framework of
the Islamic Law reveals not only justice but also an abundance of
compassion for woman.
4. The Political Aspect
Any fair investigation of the teachings of Islam o~ into the history
of the Islamic civilization will surely find a clear evidence of
woman's equality with man in what we call today"political rights".
This includes the right of election as well as the nomination to
political offices. It also includes woman's right to participate in
public affairs. Both in the Qur'anand in Islamic history we find
examples of women who participated in serious discussions and argued
even with the Prophet (P) himself, (see Qur'an 58: 14 and 60: 10-12).
During the Caliphate of Omar Ibn al-Khattab, a woman argued with him
in the mosque, proved her point, and caused him to declare in the
presence of people: "A woman is right and Omaris wrong."
Although not mentioned in the Qur'an, one Hadeeth of the Prophet
isinterpreted to make woman ineligible for the position of head of
state. The Hadeeth referred to is roughly translated: "A people will
not prosper ifthey let a woman be their leader." This limitation,
however, has nothing to do with the dignity of woman or with her
rights. It is rather, related to the natural differences in
thebiological and psychological make-up ofmen and women.
According to Islam, the head of the state is no mere figurehead. He
leads people in the prayers, especially on Fridays and festivities; he
is continuously engaged in the process of decision-making pertaining
to the securityand well-being of his people. This demanding position,
or any similar one, such as the Commander of the Army, is generally
inconsistent with the physiological and psychological make-up of woman
in general. It is a medical fact that during their monthly periods and
during their pregnancies,women undergo various physiological and
psychological changes. Such changes may occur during an emergency
situation, thus affecting her decision, without considering the
excessivestrain which is produced.Moreover, some decisionsrequire a
maximum of rationality and a minimum of emotionality- a requirement
which does not coincide with the instinctive nature of women.
Even in modern times, and in the most developed countries, it is rare
to find a woman in the position of a head of state acting as more
thana figurehead, a woman commander of the armedservices, or even a
proportionate number ofwomen representatives in parliaments, or
similar bodies. One can not possibly ascribe this to backwardness of
various nations or to any constitutional limitation on woman's right
to be in such a position as a head of state or as a member of the
parliament. It is more logical to explain the present situation in
termsof the natural and indisputable differences between man and
woman, a difference which does not imply any"supremacy" of one over
the other. The difference implies rather the"complementary" roles
ofboth the sexes in life.
IV. CONCLUSION
The first part of this paper deals briefly with the position of
various religions and cultures on the issue under investigation. Part
of this exposition extends to cover the general trend as late as the
nineteenth century, nearly 1300 years after the Qur'an set forth the
Islamic teachings.
In the second part of the paper, the status of women in Islam is
briefly discussed. Emphasis in this part is placed on the original and
authentic sources of Islam. This represents the standard according to
which degree of adherence of Muslims can be judged. It is also a fact
that during the downward cycle of Islamic Civilization, such teachings
were not strictly adhered to by many people who profess to be Muslims.
Such deviations were unfairly exaggerated by some writers, and the
worst of this, were superficially taken to represent the teachings of
"Islam" to the Western reader without taking the trouble to make any
original and unbiased study of the authentic sources of these
teachings.
Even with such deviations three facts areworth mentioning:
1. The history of Muslims is rich with women of great achievements in
all walks of life from as earlyas the seventh century (B.C.)
2. It is impossible for anyone to justify any mistreatment of woman by
any decree of rule embodied in the Islamic Law, nor could anyone dare
to cancel, reduce, ordistort the clear-cut legal rights of women given
inIslamic Law.
3. Throughout history, the reputation, chastity and maternal role of
Muslim women were objects of admiration by impartial observers.
It is also worthwhile to state that the status which women reached
during the present era was not achieved due to the kindness of men or
due to natural progress. It was rather achieved through a long
struggle and sacrifice on woman'spart and only when society needed her
contribution and work, more especial!; during the two world wars, and
due to the escalation of technological change.
In the case of Islam such compassionate and dignified status was
decreed, not because it reflects the environment of the seventh
century, nor under the threat or pressure of women and their
organizations, but rather because of its intrinsic truthfulness.
If this indicates anything,it would demonstrate thedivine origin of
the Qur'an and the truthfulness of the message of Islam, which, unlike
human philosophies and ideologies, was far from proceeding from its
human environment, a message which established such humane principles
as neither grew obsolete during thecourse of time and after these many
centuries, nor can become obsolete in the future. After all, this is
the message of the All-Wise and all-knowing God whose wisdom and
knowledge are far beyond the ultimate in human thought and progress.
Deep thinking
Have you ever thought about the fact that you did not exist before you
were conceived and then born into the worldand that you have come into
existence from merenothingness?
Have you ever thought about how the flowers you see in your living
room everyday come outof pitch black, muddy soil with fragrant smells
and are as colorful as they are?
Have you ever thought about how mosquitoes, which irritatingly fly
around you, move their wings so fast that we areunable to see them?
Have you ever thought about how the peels of fruits such as bananas,
watermelons, melons and oranges serve as wrappings of high quality,
and how the fruits are packed in these wrappings so that they maintain
their tasteand fragrance?
Have you ever thought about the possibility thatwhile you are asleep a
sudden earthquake could raze your home, your office, and your cityto
the ground and that in a few seconds you could lose everything of the
world you possess?
Have you ever thought of how your life passes away very quickly, and
that you will grow old and become weak, and slowly lose your beauty,
health and strength?
Have you ever thought about how one day you will find the angels of
death appointed by God before you and that you will then leave this
world?
Well, have you ever thought about why people are so attached to a
world from which they will soon depart when what they basically need
is to strivefor the hereafter?
Man is a being whom God furnishes with the faculty of thought. Yet,
most people do not use this very important faculty as they should.
Infact, some people almostnever think.
In truth, each person possesses a capacity for thought of which even
he himself is unaware. Once man begins to use this capacity, facts he
has not been able to realise until that very moment begin to be
uncovered for him. The deeper he goes in reflection, the more his
capacity to think improves, and this is possible for everyone. One
just has to realise that one needs to reflect and then to strive hard.
Someone who does not think will remain totally distant from truths and
lead his life in self-deception and error.As a result, he will not
grasp the purpose of thecreation of the world, and the reason for his
existence on the earth. Yet, God has created everything with a
purpose. This fact is stated in the Qur'an as follows:
We did not create the heavens and the earth and everything betweenthem
as a game. We did not create them except with truth but most of them
do not know it. (Surat ad-Dukhan: 38-39)
Did you suppose that Wecreated you for amusement and that youwould not
return to Us? (Surat al-Muminun: 115)
Therefore, each person needs to ponder the purpose of creation,
firstas it concerns him himself, and then as it pertains to everything
he sees in the universe and every event he experiences throughout his
life. Someone who does not think, will understand the facts only after
he dies, when he gives account before God, but then it will be too
late. God says in the Qur'an that on the day ofaccount, everybody will
think and see the truth:
That day Hell is produced, that day man will remember; but how will
the remembrance help him? He will say,"Oh! If only I had prepared in
advance for this life of mine!" (Surat al-Fajr: 23-24)
The truth can be told to a person in many different ways; it can be
shown by the use of details, pieces of evidence and by every means.
Yet, if this persondoes not think over this truth on his own,
sincerely and honestly with the purpose of comprehending the truth,
all these efforts are useless. For this reason, when the messengers of
God communicated the message to their people,they told them the truth
clearly and then summoned them to think.
While God has given us achance in the life of this world to reflect
and derive conclusions from our reflections, to see the truth will
bring us great gain in our life in the hereafter. For this reason, God
has summoned all people, through His prophets and books, to reflect on
their creation and on the creation of the universe:
Have they not reflected within themselves? God did not create the
heavens and the earth and everything betweenthem except with truth and
for a fixed term. Yet many people reject the meeting with their Lord.
(Surat ar-Rum: 8)
A man who reflects grasps the secrets of God's creation, the truth of
the life of this world, the existence of hell and paradise, and the
inner truth of matters. He gets a deeper understanding of the
importance of being a person with whom God is pleased, and so he lives
religion as is its due, recognizes God's attributes in everything he
sees, and begins to think not according to what the majority of people
demand but as God commands. As a result, he takes pleasure from beauty
much more than others do, and does not suffer distress from baseless
misapprehensions and worldly greed.
These are only a few of the beautiful things a person who thinks will
gain in the world. The gain in the hereafter of someone who always
finds the truth by thinking, is the love, approval, mercy and the
paradise of our Lord, which are above everything else.

Man is a being whom God furnishes with the faculty of thought. Yet,
most people do not use this very important faculty as they should.
Infact, some people almostnever think.
In truth, each person possesses a capacity for thought of which even
he himself is unaware. Once man begins to use this capacity, facts he
has not been able to realise until that very moment begin to be
uncovered for him. The deeper he goes in reflection, the more his
capacity to think improves, and this is possible for everyone. One
just has to realise that one needs to reflect and then to strive hard.
Someone who does not think will remain totally distant from truths and
lead his life in self-deception and error.As a result, he will not
grasp the purpose of thecreation of the world, and the reason for his
existence on the earth. Yet, God has created everything with a
purpose. This fact is stated in the Qur'an as follows:
We did not create the heavens and the earth and everything betweenthem
as a game. We did not create them except with truth but most of them
do not know it. (Surat ad-Dukhan: 38-39)
Did you suppose that Wecreated you for amusement and that youwould not
return to Us? (Surat al-Muminun: 115)
Therefore, each person needs to ponder the purpose of creation,
firstas it concerns him himself, and then as it pertains to everything
he sees in the universe and every event he experiences throughout his
life. Someone who does not think, will understand the facts only after
he dies, when he gives account before God, but then it will be too
late. God says in the Qur'an that on the day ofaccount, everybody will
think and see the truth:
That day Hell is produced, that day man will remember; but how will
the remembrance help him? He will say,"Oh! If only I had prepared in
advance for this life of mine!" (Surat al-Fajr: 23-24)
The truth can be told to a person in many different ways; it can be
shown by the use of details, pieces of evidence and by every means.
Yet, if this persondoes not think over this truth on his own,
sincerely and honestly with the purpose of comprehending the truth,
all these efforts are useless. For this reason, when the messengers of
God communicated the message to their people,they told them the truth
clearly and then summoned them to think.
While God has given us achance in the life of this world to reflect
and derive conclusions from our reflections, to see the truth will
bring us great gain in our life in the hereafter. For this reason, God
has summoned all people, through His prophets and books, to reflect on
their creation and on the creation of the universe:
Have they not reflected within themselves? God did not create the
heavens and the earth and everything betweenthem except with truth and
for a fixed term. Yet many people reject the meeting with their Lord.
(Surat ar-Rum: 8)
A man who reflects grasps the secrets of God's creation, the truth of
the life of this world, the existence of hell and paradise, and the
inner truth of matters. He gets a deeper understanding of the
importance of being a person with whom God is pleased, and so he lives
religion as is its due, recognizes God's attributes in everything he
sees, and begins to think not according to what the majority of people
demand but as God commands. As a result, he takes pleasure from beauty
much more than others do, and does not suffer distress from baseless
misapprehensions and worldly greed.
These are only a few of the beautiful things a person who thinks will
gain in the world. The gain in the hereafter of someone who always
finds the truth by thinking, is the love, approval, mercy and the
paradise of our Lord, which are above everything else.
